DOOM Gameplay Demo (E3 2015)

I counted 56 kills and 13 dropped health/bullets on the first demo. Hardly spewing out as some have said.

The speed is fine as it's the player who decides on how fast he plays the game.

They had a health bar but every enemy dropped insane amounts of health so like yeah okay it's not really a resource to manage so whatever.

Wans't overly fond of it either but keep in mind that it was a demo so it's probably overdone, then take the difficulty setting into account.

Rumour has it that someone once told Mick Gordon to "Take it easy" and Mick didn't know what those words meant in that order.

Doom was an action game, doom 3 was a horror game and this doom looks to be lost somewhere between.

So far im not impressed but who knows how the end product will end up. The worst part of the video(outside of idiots cheering everything) is the plasma rifle. 20 seconds looking at the animation only to get one of the most flaccid results possible when firing it.

For all those saying it looks generic and boring, explain why? Lots of cool weapons, effects, graphics, new little things and plus the fact that it has a year to get it out to the market plus the MP gives them tips on what to do better over that time. I'm optimistic for this game.

It is the movement speed that's the issue. At least, IMO.
If that was the maximum normal movement speed... ugh.
Really should be faster.

What's weird is that the shitty first demo they showed it looked slow, then they showed multiplayer and it looked really fast. It's confusing.

Really loving this. Though I do have some concerns. This will come off like I don't. I promise I really do love what was shown.

  • We're missing the humanoid enemies with guns. I mean, we're talking about Hell here. Possessions are pretty common, last I checked.
  • Needs more Satanic imagery. A couple pentagrams isn't necessarily setting the tone that these are demons from Hell and to be feared, but instead just that these are monsters.
  • The Plasma Gun's shooting sound is really just bad. Too "pew, pew" and not enough kick behind it. Part of what gave DOOM 3 it's atmosphere was the punchy sounds. (not that this is trying to be a horror game, but rather that the sound design of the game was good, even if the game itself wasn't what DOOM fans wanted)
  • AI feels like it needs to be more aggressive / trying to close the gap between you and them, though I feel it was probably turned way down for the presentation.
  • Lastly, there needs to be more grunt-tier monsters like Imps on screen at once. Specifically in corridor areas.
Please be gentle.

Based on those graphics I'm so fucking glad I own a PC for this. Though I think I'm gonna update my CPU for this beast. LOL. So much gorgeous detail, best of all it has that old school run and gun Doom game play. Yes,yes, yes! :D

Pretty sure that 4 player DM was a "mod" or custom gametype emulating original Doom, not standard gameplay. Because that MP trailer seemed to have slowish movement speed as well.
I may be wrong though.

Shooters really haven't seemed to progress in the last 15 years. Graphics have improved though...

Are you joking or is my sarcasmdar broken?

They just showed a new trailer on the post conference show (trailer was not shown on stage).
Looked faster than the stage demo and looks like the enemy count picks up a bit in the other levels.

Remember we only saw easier/early levels in the stage demo and you know it's going to get way more hectic and chaotic later on.

Is that available online anywhere? My biggest gripe with the footage they showed is the enemy count.

A corridor is precisely what hell was.

Slathered in fancy paint, but it was absolutely a corridor.

You went down the disguised hallway, into the room, to kill all the badguys, and back into the hallway. There was never an option, or a choice, to ever go anywhere else.

Garbage.

Its finally happened:

How do you know there wasn't an option or choice to go anywhere else? It certainly looked like you could, and seeing as you weren't playing it, you have no idea. Not like the first level where you could tell based on an ACTUAL CORRIDOR that you couldn't go anywhere.

If this was a new IP being shown off, criticism would be different. But it's not a new IP, its the sequel to one of the most beloved FPS games ever. DOOM 1+2 played nothing like this. This is heavily scripted, slow paced, and all about gory visceral finishers. Rather than high speed movement and shooting, circle strafing, crowd control, map exploring perfection.

1) It's a demo for a trade show. MILLIONS of people are watching. Most, if not all, E3 demos are heavily scripted. This is nothing new. You really think they are gonna run unscripted sequences, at their (VERY FIRST) live event for a game that isn't coming out until next year?

2) I guess I'm blind. I saw plenty of what you mentioned. The enemies may have been a bit repetitive, but hey, it's just a demo. If you pay attention, you can clearly see plenty of walkways, corridors and paths. I'm sure they have way more enemy types and behaviors too, in store for when the game ships.

This is actually a big one. I need to see a super shotgun blast at least 3 enemies at once. It seemed like a lot of them in this game just went to the "execute me" mode after you shot them instead of just getting blown apart or crumpling to the ground like they should.

Looks repetitive but it looks like DOOM which is at least a step in the right direction from DOOM 3.

If you grew up with DOOM then this should make you happy. You don't need to change the formula and try to make it anything other than what it is. It's a run and gunner with demons and gore and it pulls that off.

I do call BS on the graphics though. It look well over 60fps and pretty amazing. I'd like to know the rig they were running that on.

There were definitely a lot of arenas in there that you dashed around through, rather than just corridors. Looked like multiple avenues.

Methinks some of ya'll are going with some heavy confirmation bias here.

I hope there's a toggle for that bullet time weapon switching. I feel like it's messing up the flow of the game.

1080p 60fps!!! Not sure why I'm so excited though. I'm buying it on PC lol.

I like watching the post-show interview. The executive producer really emphasized that this was a game that needed to be played to properly understand how fun it is in motion. He also goes into detail that the kill animations are dynamic, optional, and vary depending on the body part your reticle is facing at when you perform the execution.

I also really like how the game provides yo health and ammo by killing enemies so it forces you to engage. The emphasis on not only fast horizontal movement, but fast vertical movement with the accelerated wall climb and double jump, will definitely create new and interesting dynamics for the moment to moment gameplay.

I am concerned about the shotgun sounds and the heightened focus on realism when it comes to the basic weapons. I think having the long range, narrow spread, uber powerful shotgun from the original would have been extremely fun. I hope this current incarnation of the shotgun will be as fun to use even with the much wider spread and shorter range.

I don't like how the artstyle is basically Doom 3 with more lights everywhere. But the faster gameplay is welcome. I just hope it's an insane kill fest with unimaginable kill counts like the classics or I will be disappointed.

Looking great to me. Judging by the demos, it looks like the jump-scares/monster closets from Doom 3 are non-existent? I hope so, because I jump too easily. Yes, I'm weak sauce.

Also thinking they are taking out the audio logs/tablet? That was such a pacing-killer in D3.

This game looks like fun.

i dont see what the issue was for this game, everything looked great.

"everything was corridors" what! you expect the game be giant warehouses?

im here for this Day1 baby! glad i got into Beta!

I wasn't too impressed. It had fantastic visuals, but what game doesn't nowadays? There was a part towards the end that looked fun in that slightly more open area where the guys dropped down on him.

I guess best-case scenario for me is something like Wolfenstein: TNO, but I feel like it'll fall short of that. Less heart. The multiplayer will be forgoten (it's not going to compete with CoD, Halo, Battlefront/field, etc).

But hey, if it finally comes out that's cool. The user created stuff will be neat on consoles if its as flexible as they make it out to be.

Hmm. Probably hard to tell if this is actually representative since it's a show demo. If it is then I'm a little bummed about how few enemies there are and how they never really were aggressive. I assume that stuff will be better in the full game. If nothing else people will just make that shit I guess. Seems like a good candidate for buying on sale some months after release if the community has made some great stuff. The engine looked really nice though and you can tell in some places that it can go much faster.

As i noted before, it is most likely a controller (ie console) convenience to simulate the weapon switching speed keyboard allows.
Play on PC and solve the problem...

Also, there was quick switching, probably "last used weapon" though i cannot be sure. We saw the player to swap weapons without the wheel a few times.

Answering both questions, something more like this

Now, i liked what they show but i needs me more speed, less corridors and more enemies.
Probably i'll wait until the final version for a final opinion, but so far i liked what has been shown.

One of the best levels in Doom 1 is literally a giant mazelike warehouse full of crates.

Not enogh enemies... slow paced... ?

I mean, yeah, it's not like Brutal Doom, but still looks pretty fast and filled with enemies imo!

I'm guessing they wanted to focus on flashy demons instead of the same guys with guns you see in every other game.

I could see the possessed guys looking pretty snazzy with some updates though.

What was the difference between the 2 videos? I watched the first demo then stepped away while they showed the multi. When I came back there was another single player demo playing.

Maybe Doom 3 made me cynical but this didn't really help my fears any.

Main things that worried me:

1. it was pretty slow for someone who was bragging about it being fast

2. it seems to be more painkiller "fight room of enemies, move on" then having any doom exploration. The hand opening the door sort of suggested there might be a key system? but I'm not real confident.

3. I didn't like the enemy design. The enemies didn't look nearly as distinctive as they did in OG doom.

4. All those executions
Basically this. Seems stuck between classic and doom 3. Needs more colour differentiation and more mobs on screen, better weapon feedback, faster speed, better level design etc. Looks like what I expected for a modern fps game.

well im sure there wont be tons of monsters on Hurt Me Plenty mode

but Ultra-violence or NIGHTMARE... well we will have to see.

needs to be more arena like(open) and far more enemies. On a plus side the gore seems to be bang on.

why does the second video look so much better than the first?

the gameplay in the first video looks like a shitty mix of doom 3 and halo but the action in the second video actually looks pretty fun and awesome.

those indoor areas look like early footage or something
