I get where you're coming from, and I think I agree.

Both in gameplay and story really. I think the story part is obvious, but the first time I got into a text adventure segment in Nier, or when the camera switched to fixed RE-mode or Isometric RPG mode was also pretty special.

Still hyped as fuck though.

Taro is well aware of that, judging from that S-E interview, he says they want to keep the different game styles theme, but they don't want to repeat the same ones, because that would get stale. Same for save deleting, they want to mess around with unique concepts regarding the endings, but not the same thing again.

Can't wait for the driving sequence.

I just noticed there's no digital version of the first game on PSN. To think I almost pulled the trigger on the physical version a year ago... what an annoyance.

What has happened? How come all of these long time awaited games are all announced at once?
Maybe this was the game industry's collective plan all along. Suck for a while and then blow everyone the fuck out at E3 2015.

Pretty stoked that I picked up Nier on PS3 from Gamestop on Saturday for $14.99 on a whim. It's now almost $50 used on Amazon!

You are in for a treat my friend.

Make sure to do two playthroughs back to back at the very least. Or you will miss a big chunk of the story.

Though that style in itself is still mostly a known quantity - the audience will fully expect some genre pastiche, self-aware usage of gameplay conventions and a few of Taro's more common narrative devices and motifs. Hopefully they can still do some genuinely unexpected things even with that assumption in place; and if the atmosphere and writing is solid, it'll still be effective regardless of preconceptions.

Can't wait for the driving sequence.

80% of the game will actually be an in-depth boar drifting simulator. The other 20% is fishing.

I hope the fishing tutorial still sucks in the sequel.

I really like the idea of an intire industry willingly being shit just to surprise people at E3 2015.

Any possibility of it coming to Xbox One like Kingdom Hearts 3? A friend of mine is a huge Nier fan but he only has an Xbox One.

Thanks in advance,

Best wishes.

So far it's unlikely, but at least in the west there's always a possibility. I don't think Sony is helping at all with this one, so if the western side of S-E thinks it's worth it to release it on Xbox One or PC, then they will.

Yoko Taro answered a question about Xbox fans with 'please look forward to play it on PS4' or something like that.

So yeah, I think it's pretty unlikely.

That is my concern too. Of course this wouldnt apply in a Nier HD version to address the general concerns with graphics quality. Would rebuy in that a heartbeat.

I will likely buy Nier 2 nevertheless unless they go completely off the rails.

Ouch. I'm going to assume its the same case with Star Ocean 5 and probable Dragon Quest?

Well here's to hoping. Thanks lads.

Best wishes.

I was up half the night (UK) watching the Sony conference but fell asleep during Square Enix and was upset I missed this announcement, it would have likely shed more tears of joy for this announcement after everything else that night I was a wreck.

It's a little bit like the next Mad Max movie. If they do the same game/movie, it won't have the same spark and will be considered inferior. If they do something different, they could easily lose what made the first one great.

I am hoping Nier 2 is sorta like the last Mad Max movie.

A unique film-making style that was under appreciated in previous works, exploding on to the screen as a gonzo fucking amazing movie that blows away all expectations.

New Nier: Fury Road

Yeah but no Kamiya means no Space Harrier section

I dunno how I will survive

New Nier: Fury Road

The final boss is a naked 100 foot tall Charlize Theron

Sony money is involved in Star Ocean 5.

PS4 is the console to own this gen if your friend likes JRPGs.

Yeah I told him that, but he doesn't like PlayStation for some ridiculous fanboy-like reasons. Still he's my friend so I decided to ask around about the possibilities of a port since he loved the jrpgs on Xbox 360.

Thanks for the answer though. I might personally get Nier 2, that DQ Heroes game and Star Ocean 5 if it means Dragon Quest XI being on PS4 is possibility.

Best wishes.

Is the soundtrack from the trailer entirely new?

I think I have heard the melody that starts from around 1:24 somewhere.....maybe there was something similar in Nier soundtrack?

Thank you!

So I have to ask. What exactly is Nier? Someone give me a quick and snappy breakdown please?

Amazing story, characters and soundtrack with a unique approach to game design, featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series different playstyles to suit different thematic moments of the game.

There's also a shitty fishing segment that makes most people drop the game.

The first Nier sold horribly on 360, even in the west.

I didn't know that, even by Nier standards then?

PS4 exclusive it is, then.

Bloodborne was the one reason I got a PS4, but I'm really glad it made me get one, it seems to be the right choice for me, especially since I only decided I don't want more than one console this gen after I bought a PS4.

I totally missed this part of the interview:

Taro: I’ve heard that western gamers don’t like text adventures, so I’m curious if western fans would actually enjoy that.”
“In terms of that balancing act, NieR wasn’t really balanced, it was very mixed. I think it was fine if you can enjoy it. In terms of the text adventure parts, if we get a lot of feedback, that’s something I would definitely consider putting in based on fan comments.”

I NEED TEXT ADVENTURE PARTS AGAIN, also the way "text" was used during Playthrough B was brilliant.

How can we give him feedback? twitter?

There is a crazy madman called Yoko Taro in Japan. He made a series of games called Drakengard, and he became famous (as in, he made a cult hit) because his games were often jank, but had oddly fantastic stories and characters in them. And then another madman at Square enjoyed his games and kept funding them.

NieR is a spin off of the Drakengard series (that can absolutely be played without knowing about the series), that also has the weird-but-fantastic story and characters, and a wide variety of gameplay styles (all of them a bit jank). NieR ended up also being a cult hit, and now they're making a sequel with Platinum games.

That's as quick as I can say everything.

tl;dr - they are super weird games that embrace the weirdness and come out as great games with great stories and characters.

Buy 1000 copies of Nier and take a picture of some stereotypical westerner holding them while wearing a driving range attendant helmet with "I LIKE TEXT ADVENTURE" written on it

The "flawed masterpiece" expression never described anything as well as it does for Nier.

It's Song of the Ancients from the first game.

Nier it's normal as fuck compared to Drakengard 1. I guess that's why its story is so beloved. It's got the good of Taro without the full crazyness of D1.
Nier story really isn't that weird, unless you explore the stuff from Grimoire Nier.

I mean, yeah... But it's still a very uncommon kind of story.

I wouldn't put it on "normal" at all.

But yes, it's no Drakengard, that's for fucking sure.

This is actually true. Fuck that section. The tutorial happens by a fishing spot so I go "okay I'll fish here". Then after like 2 hours of rage, salt and determination, I then saw there was a marker on the map...

That fishing section is no joke.

I think I'm going to start a fresh new playthrough of NieR either today or later on in this week. This announcement + me relistening to the sublime score has put me in a mood.

I still think literally the only downside is that Yoshida is too amazing and classy an artist to do something especially nutty like put a flower in someone's eyeball, like the Drakengard 3 designer did.

I looked at the press releases and while neither World of Final Fantasy or Final Fantasy VII use the word exclusive, this one does, so I suspect there's actually some kind of deal in place.

After seeing that interview, I wonder if he enjoys working with Platinum? Given their pedigree for violent action titles, would he be frustrated with a more action-oriented game?

The Drakengard series is nothing but action. And they already said that they're still going to make Nier 2 an ARPG with lots of variety, just like the first one.
