I'm really sorry if I'm not allowed to ask directly. If so please ignore this post.

I was looking at the OP but I'm not very good with this kinda stuff and it was making my head spin. Basically I need a new PC. Something I can do a little gaming on, but mostly for streaming (using an elgato HD60) and video editing. If possible I'd like it to cost around the £500 mark.

Cheers guys, if someone could give me any input I'd appreciate it. I'm lost with this stuff.

Many builders are waiting to see what happens with prices in the next few weeks when Skylake comes out, so you may want to wait as well.

If not, use this format to ask, from the OP:

[Basic Desktop Questions]

Your Current Specs: CPU / RAM / Motherboard / GPU (Graphics) / PSU (Power Supply) / Case / HDD (Hard Drive)
Budget: Price Range + Country
Main Use: Rate 1-5. 5 being Highest: Light Gaming, Gaming, Emulation (PS2/Wii), Video Editing, Streaming games in HD, 3D/Model work (and what program), General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p playback).
Monitor Resolution: What resolution will you be playing your games at? Are you going to upgrade later? Are you buying a new monitor?
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Is 30FPS acceptable? 60? 120? How important is PhysX / SuperSampling / CUDA to you?
Looking to reuse any parts?: List make and model (e.g. Corsair 520HX, 640GB SATA HDD, Antec 900)
When will you build?: Do you have a deadline?
Will you be overclocking?: Yes, No, Maybe (This means yes!)

The "Good-Very Capable" or "Great-Best Value" builds from the OP may be worth looking at and setting up in Partpicker . Give it a whirl and see what you come up with. It's a really good tool.

Are you willing to learn how to build one? Most people here will say it's really easy, and it is, for some. But not for others. So if you don't feel comfortable or interested in learning how to build, I would just get an off the shelf PC with mid range specs.

Thanks for all the help and advice over the course of the past couple of months everyone! You've all been super helpful and great. Just finished my very first build and I'm installing Windows. The system looks really cool and I can't wait to try out all the games I've bought during the summer sale in anticipation of this! HYPE

Hi guys. So, I'm really new to this stuff. I got my computer components put together and everything (works great, btw), and I ended up buying an aftermarket cooler for my A10 7850k instead of using the stock cooler. It's not a very elaborate cooler at all (just a heatsink and fan) but it's about twice the size of the stock one and way quieter.

Anyway, I ended up overclocking the GPU and CPU portions of the APU to 1GHz from 720MHz and 3.9GHz from 3.7GHz respectively. I haven't really done anything like that before so I'm kind of worried about temperatures and stuff. I want it to be safe. I found this program and here's what it says while just browsing the web and watching a Youtube video:

cputempreadout.png

Is that a normal temperature for that sort of thing? I played Mirror's Edge for about 5 minutes to see what kind of temps it was at under load and it occasionally jumped up to the 50s, with a max of 53 C. Is that okay?

Thanks.

I'm really happy with this APU. I haven't really got to test too much, but I get 1080p 30fps with all settings up including PhysX on Mirror's Edge, 1080p 60fps on Burnout Paradise and Trackmania Canyon, 1366x768 with ~medium settings and MLAA at around 45fps in Dishonored. All with V-sync enabled, since screen tearing is my most HATED thing ever. I'd put the performance between 360 and XB1, but closer to XB1.

I need a headphone jack extender for a headset that uses one of those mic and sound in the same jack things.

Do I need a specific type of extension cable to get both the mic/sound? Or do all of them work?

As far as I know, no. The extension cable doesn't care what it's carrying, whatever comes in one end comes out the other. Just take a note of what type of connector it is (TRS or TRRS) and get the appropriately matching extension cable.

Quick question, with the release of Windows 10 I want to buy a SSD, are any of these good as a pure system drive?

128 GB SanDisk X110 SD6SB1M-128G-1022i SATA III

128 GB SanDisk Solid State Drive Retail SDSSDP-128G-G25 SATA III

120 GB Kingston SSDNow V300 Retail SV300S37A/120G SATA III

128 GB Intenso Top Retail 3812430 SATA III

128 GB Transcend TS128GSSD340 Retail TS128GSSD340 SATA III

120 GB SanDisk Plus Retail SDSSDA-120G-G25 SATA III

I could get any of these for fairly cheap and I don't need instantaneous speeds, really just something snappy and reliable for Windows and daily programs would be enough.

Thanks for help in advance! :)

The V300 should be avoided for reasons mentioned here. I would skip the Intenso brand, they don't seem to be very well known? I don't think there's a huge difference in speed or reliability for the rest of those models.. I could be wrong, though.

Not really asking for help regarding new parts, but upgrading to Win10. So I have an ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 mobo. I can't find any Windows 10 drivers on their webpage, which is disheartening. I'm on Windows 8.1 and there aren't any 8.1 drivers either, just 8. Is there any place else where ASRock would upload their Win10 drivers besides their main webpage? Or did they just stop support after 8 for a motherboard that isn't really even that old? :/

There's no other place they would put it other than on their drivers page.

Probably a dumb question, but is this 5 year old i7 better than this i5? I'm buying a friend's PC and just remembered my older PC (RIP) has that i7 which is salvageable.

I had that processor. There's no real difference between consumer level i5 and i7 other than hyperthreading. The 4690K is several generations newer and far better in most aspects.

I hope you don't have my problem

If I get the exact same MB do I have to get t a new Windows key?

No. Even if you changed motherboards, you still don't have to. If you're lucky it'll just work without you needing to do anything, if not then you'll need to contact Microsoft to get assistance in reactivating your license key and tell them you had to replace your motherboard.

So I built my new PC today specs:

CPU i5-4690k
Motherboard ASRock Z97 Extreme3
Memory Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB
SSD Curicla BX100 500GB
Video Card GTX960
Case Corsair 200R ATX
Power Supply EVGA 600B Bronze

I followed all instructions in every piece when installing, but my computer isn't turning on as far as I can tell. I plug in the power supply and flip the switch and no fans come on, nothing pops up on screen, everything is silent. Not sure if I'm missing something obvious here, I have everything plugged in and I checked twice that the cables are all the way in. Anyone have any idea?

Make sure the video card is inserted all the way in.

Any lights turn on the MB? Post different angle pictures of the whole MB. A close up of the area where you plugin the power on, reset and etc. wires.

I just switched the slot of the graphics card and all of the fans now seem to be running (CPU, GPU, 2 exhaust fans), though the CPU is sporadically stopping and starting. Now I have no image on screen at all. I thought bios or something were supposed to pop up?

It's probably too early for this, but what CPU/GPU/RAM combo would you recommend for when some of VR headsets come out? I've been looking into building a gaming PC to go along with my PS4/Wii U, and I figured I should build something that would handle VR. I was thinking i5 4690k/980 ti/16 GB DDR3. Should I wait for Skylake and/or HBM2 cards?

Skylake is coming out in like a week. Who knows when the HBM2 cards are releasing, but I don't think any VR solution has a set date either. Unless you want to build the machine now, you might as well wait until there are more concrete release plans for consumer grade VR solutions.

Um, I could be totally mistaken here, but does that actually say 5 degrees Celcius for the GPU core? I also can't see any temperatures for the CPU cores...

Can you use HWinfo instead?

Hey PCGAF, I need some advise. Unfortunately I'm looking to sell my rig. The funds are going towards a down payment on a new car.

Just wanted GAF's opinion on what I should sell it for.. Paid $1,500 in February
Parts not noted in the SS - EVGA SUPERNOVA 750w PSU, Corsair Air 240 case - Corsair Vengeance 1866 DDR3 Memory which I just realized is running at 1333Mhz LOL

Tower only..

Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a new CPU and motherboard coming tomorrow. Would waiting until I get that stuff installed and then upgrading to Windows 10 be a better idea? Would it still be better to do a clean install?

Also, SLI support and performance scaling is dependent on how well the developers have coded the game, and Nvidia-provided graphics driver updates and SLI profiles. Not every game works equally as well for SLI so some research would have to be done as to whether the games you want to play will work well with it. Flickering textures and things like that are a common issue with games that don't play well with multiple graphics cards. Generally speaking SLI support for most games isn't bad and games that don't feature proper SLI support on release can sometimes have that fixed within a few weeks or months of game launch.

And don't forget that SLI inherently has higher wattage consumption.

Depends. If you're doing an in-place upgrade, all of your programs and files will remain intact, and so should the program you're using to overclock the GPU. Generally speaking a clean install is preferred, so if you do that then you'll probably need to set the settings again.

I did a clean install and just re-applied the settings in EVGA PrecisionX

Thanks!

Hey Guys! Quick question. Are we expecting a nvidia lineup refresh this year in Sep or Oct? Been thinking of a 970 GTX But if that is happening I can wait.

Is it staying on? Or does it shut down after a while?

All my parts are finally here ^_^

Will start building tomorrow :0
Edit:

Just check the model of my acer 1440p monitor, seems it was manufactured in JUNE 2015!!!!

My Corsair K70 RGB arrived today and I just need an excuse to type on this thing some more :) I think I've finally found a mechanical keyboard that I'm going to stick with.

The lighting effects are also pretty neat. The LEDs could certainly be a bit brighter and more vibrant, but that wasn't really the sold reason I piked one of these up. It's just my favorite to type on. The build quality of this sucker is also amazing.

Considering I'm not that sure I'll OC, should I spend 200€ on a i5 4590 or 230 on a 4690k?
What would be a good (but not expensive) mobo to pair them with?

I need to upgrade my gpu too, that's why I'm thinking about saving some money to put it for that: what would be a good gpu for under 300€?

What are your uses? I'm guessing that games is one of them but knowing more about what else you might do with your rig could sway taking one CPU over the other.

If you could tack on another 30-50 euros you are in range of a 970, which depending on the resolution you play at, could be a graphics card to last you a couple years.

I'm thinking about getting some sound dampening material for my case. Does anybody have experience with this? Is it noticeable? Does it cause heat to be retained in the system more easily? I've only seen one video if it and it seemed to make a big difference.

Mainly gaming, rarely some video recording/streaming if possible, but I could give up on that if this setup doesn't let me to.
I play at 1920x1080, my "goal" right now is playing Fallout 4 and MGS V with no problems (ultra settings not needed). There's nothing below 300?

You mean CPU fan is stopping and starting?
If so its failing the POST tests. Check cables and RAM. Try onboard GPU (remove dedicated).

Not sure where to post this, so...

I got an HP IPS LED monitor. Just updated to Windows 10. The text is a bit blurry.

I remember there was some sort of issue with it being HDMI and I had to change a setting, but i can't remember what the setting is to fix it.

Something to do with it thinking the monitor is a TV maybe...? Tried Clear Type, adjusting sharpness, etc.

Could be a RAM issue, try different RAM sticks in different slots and only one stick at a time to test.

I think I have a memory problem.

I've overlooked this for the last... year I suppose? I've lived with it but I'm getting incredibly fed up with it. I've been getting consistent blue screens on average about once a month. Only once or twice has my computer seemingly cited the graphics driver as the issue but for at least 90% of the time it draws back to ntoskrnl and the problem is either a Bad Pool Header, Memory Management or Page Fault In Non Paged Area.

A friend told me he figured my computer might be overheating but I don't think that's it because my temp has usually been well managed from my tests. I hoped for a while that it was just a faulty Windows install but nope, upgrading to Windows 10 didn't really help that (got my first one under that OS today while playing FFXIV).

Only other thing I think I can draw it back to now is memory. I'm not sure what to do in this regard. I tried upping the voltage a couple of notches but it didn't seem to have helped.

For reference, I use these. I've only partially assumed for a while that using 4 sticks with 4GB might not be the most optimal and this particular brand seems to be around 3-4 years old. Only reason I got these is because I got them for free.

I'm heavily considering upgrading the memory to these Corsair Vengeance Pro sticks. They're a bit pricey and I don't know if it's the most optimal solution but at this point I just want to end the incessant blue screening.

Is there any good way to fix that?
Think it's not covered by warranty haha :(

Very, very happy. Decided to go with a smaller end monitor, 24" @ 1440p, due to my preference for pixel density over size. Looks really fantastic. Monitor itself could be better (can only run HDMI), but overall I'm pleased with the colours and more importantly the dense 1440p pixel IQ and how wonderful it looks in game. It was instantly obvious in Wild Hunt, being able to make out textures clearer over distance (like brick walls).

Really didn't need to get a 980 Ti, but whatever. This is definitely my last card upgrade for a long while...unless Pascal really blows me away. Still, the 1440p needed the grunt. Even Wild Hunt drops below 60fps often enough with a 980 Ti @ 1440p with everything maxed out.

Hmm these things are always a bit random to diagnose but I had bad RAM myself in the past and the symptoms were seemingly similar to yours up to the point where I got seemingly BSODs ever 15 minutes or worse and replacing the RAM fixed that. I assume Newegg has a return policy? If so I would just order them and if the BSODs continue send them back and then you can look on for what causes them.

Other than that, I would also say replace the SATA cables of your HDDs beforehand, a bad SATA cable can also cause random BSODs.

I hope you get it fixed :)

These are three quick pictures I took before leaving for work, if I need to take more I can do so after work. I quickly tried just booting off the motherboard without the GPU in and that didn't look like it was doing the trick. I did have the RAM in the wrong slots (they were not in the color coordinated slots), and that makes the fan on the CPU now constantly work.

I'm considering just taking it in to a nearby Best Buy to see if they can figure it out if I don't get it working tonight.

For just gaming you're likely ok going with a lesser processor; though I haven't looked at benchmarks in a while so you might want to look over those to see how the processor you plan to buy performs. I'd compare a relatively new game that is open-world (like Witcher 3) and use that as a barometer to see what kind of performance you might see in Fallout 4 and MGSV which are also open-world-ish (though Fallout games are generally horribly optimized and do better with throwing beefier machines at them). If you don't care about ultra settings though you should be ok.

As for anything under 300 euros; there are plenty of good cards under 300 euros, especially at 1920x1080, you should have a decent selection to choose from. Maybe check out some of the 960's out there, they seem to be relatively cheap and decent performers. The ATi cards at this level also seem to be good deals.

Forgot to mention that I did this quite some time ago as well, nothing came out of it.
How long did you run it for? Sometimes memory errors are very hard to produce. I've run memtest86 for 3 days before before I generated an error.

Anyone know how steam streaming works? I need a monitor for my bedroom PC, my gaming PC is out in living room. I was going to get a cheap one, but thought maybe if I got a 120fps monitor I could use a steambox and play some games at 120fps (albeit with a little bit of input lag). Can streaming do those extreme framerates?

Are you sure your RAM is installed all the way? I mean, don't force it - but it looks like the locking clips are not flush with the unused ones next to it, making me think you don't have it pushed down fully. Could just be the angle. Did you hear a 'click', or feel the snap, when you pushed them down?

I just did a build yesterday with the same motherboard. Here's what it looks like with the RAM installed:

I'm fairly positive my CPU cooler mounting brackets are on backwards here. I did correct that. So don't follow that advice!

I have been thinking of building a new PC for some time.
Newegg has a shellshocker deal right now that including the MIR, is over $100 in savings.
I was going to get an i7, but I am wondering if this i5 would be a good choice instead?

Here is the deal.
What do people think, is this a good starting point? Deal seems pretty good.

Yeah I posted it right when I saw it but now I am also reading the reviews and think there is in fact a reason it is on sale.

Thanks for the reply. I will hold off and stay with my initial plan of building it closer to the holidays. This way I can ask for some components as gifts as well.

Hey guys. I'm back for help on parts for a third computer. This one is for my coworker.

Budget: $1K, could be flexible. United States
Main Use: No gaming, only 3D rendering and modeling, AutoCAD, Inventor, Revit, Solidworks, and photo editing (PhotoShop/Lightroom).
Monitor Resolution: 1080p.
When will you build?: Sometime later this year.
Will you be overclocking?: No.

It's kind of a learning experience for me because all I've been building are gaming PCs and not workstations, so I don't know the difference in part selection. Does he need a relatively high-end GPU or is something like the GTX 960 or 970 more than enough for his purposes? Or is the AMD FirePro or NVIDIA Quadro the choices? Is a i7 CPU something that's highly recommended for his uses or is a i5 CPU more than enough? What kind of PSU should be get? 650W, 750W?

A potential build / part list he and I can work on would be helpful too.
