Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

This thread man, holy hell.

I had literally zero expectations for any sort of quality in this, but would I ever actively root for a game in a series I loved years ago to fail?

If we're supposedly a forum of "serious gaming hobbiests", why in the hell would we ever hope a game is shit and bombs?

The fact that it's a solid, fun game is already tons more than Unity could have ever claimed to be, and the solid-enough performance is great news. Plus, I don't know about you, but I expect my open world games to be filled with the occasional bug, or 10.

Everything I'm hearing today is great news versus what I had been hearing days ago. We have a good AC game, why are so many of you miserable at the thought of that?

/endrant

No, Crossing Eden didn't hack my account.

I thought that going into a review thread and just posting that the higher scores must be paid off without even one piece of evidence or explanation wasn't allowed?

Ubisoft has put out exactly one broken game. What about all the great games like Rayman, AC IV, Far Cry 4, Valiant Hearts, Trials Fusion, Child of Light? It's very easy to discredit a developer because they put out one subpar product, but it's an exception, not the norm.

Far Cry 4 was rock solid but wasn't The Crew also with problems?

Yeah, Gamestop's review sold me on it. Seems like exactly what I want

Alexa talking up the lead characters and Eurogamer directly saying what a long time fan would want to know about an AC sequel helped a whole lot. I already know what I'm getting into with this series so highlighting what's different was much appreciated.

Wonder if the spread of reviews is just down to whether you're sick of AC or not yet :/

Definitely; my expectations are low, so u think I'll end up enjoying it a lot. But I could definitely get being sick of the franchise. I lost interest during the Ezio arc, until 4, but I enjoyed Rogue and Unity a lot.

Lazy probably isn't the right word, but Ubi has a massive team working on this. Releasing another game in the franchise with lots of bugs after the last fiasco is...shoddy...very shoddy.

I don't disagree- that's incredibly poor form, especially repeatedly now, and the annualized approach as whole is bad. Still, it seems like the devs are trying to make a fun game with the confines of the "guaranteed to sell". I think the phasing out of the future plot is evidence of that.

So? Arkham City is nothing more than a bigger Arkham Asylum. They had a great foundation and built upon it - which is smart.

Assassin's Creed does not have a solid foundation, and the dev team does not have the time to properly fix up all the bullshit. Doesnt mean they're "lazy". Come on now, they go to work every day like every other person on this planet. You think they just sit there drinking coffee thinking "today I wont fix bugs because I dont feel like it"? lol
I feel that Unity set the franchise back a couple of years. Coping with the terrible performance of the game engine and scaling back Syndicate to keep it from breaking distracted them from Unity's other issues. The janky controls, boring combat, and terrible mission design (which I always rated as one star with their mini in-game survey). Trying to build a good game with this foundation is like trying to write a good sequel to X-Men 3. You can't, which is why they rebooted everything with Days of Future Past. Ubi should look to do the same with AC.

I'm sorry if I'm not fine with games like Unity coming out.

Nobody should be, it was a disrespectful game to people who bought it.

You should be sorry for your irrational shit posts.

"Dishonest reviews"

Ummm...opinions, dude.

"They have different sensibilities, you can't say they're not being dishonest."

"Also, different games in different genres sometimes look and behave differently. Lazy devs, lulz."

Go take a nap and maybe you can disquise your shit posts with something logically coherent instead of constantly turning heel on what the impetus is for your comments.

Awesome post, you deserve a gold star.

I'll probably pick this up during a Steam sale or something. I'm glad they learned from Unity but I need to let some more time pass before I can stomach another AC game. They really need to abandon the yearly model.

If you give me a free laptop, I'm sure I would like them more.
What's funny about that? My current laptop was bought around 2006.
How it works is that you get treated well if you review games highly. If you make honest opinions like Jim Sterling with Konami or Jeff with Kayne and Lynch 2, you might be blacklisted or fired. Let's not just act like blacklisting doesn't exist for reviewers.
It isn't really paid reviews like we joke about, but there is a fear of blacklisting.

Also Kotaku didn't get a review copy which is funny to me. Perhaps Ubisoft was worried about a NO verdict?

Wide range of scores. The cynic in me says the high scores were money hatted, but the optimist in me.....fuck that, I'm going with money hatted.

Some people like the game.
Some people don't like the game.

Leave the thread if all you're going to talk about is this money hatting bullshit.

I can't take any review seriously that compares this game the "buggy mess that was Unity". Like seriously, UNity wasn't even that buggy. Sure, it had weird glitches with the occasional NPC flying, and falling through the map once or twice, but it wasn't the crazy mess that people made it out to be. I'm thoroughly convinced that that idea only came about because of those epic no face glitch memes, and general spite against Ubisoft.

The game was still shit though, albeit for other reasons.

You really believe that is commonplace? Like seriously?

IGN has really interested me in their comments about the ending - can anyone post this here please? In spoiler tags of course...

Sounds like the typical AC imo. Some like it, some hate it, world goes on. If you wanna reward Ubisoft for their yearly open-world checklist game and want to be sure that another one is waiting for you next year you should buy this game now.

And Spiegel Online review is the only review that matters for me and this is probably gonna take some weeks lol

Good to see it isn't an absolute trainwreck like Unity. Will probably pick it up once it reaches ~$40.

You got about 5 weeks till that happens at the latest.

Even less if you count on Target's usual yearly B2G1F promo existing in the first couple weeks of November.

But is it really great news? Is it really a good AC game?

It seems like most people want it to be one thing or the other, terrible or great. The reality is probably that it's just a bit average. That's what I'm picking up anyway!

Game looks pretty good, I played Unity months after it came out on Xbox One and didn't have the bugs that people had and found it pretty good looking / playing but I found it insanely boring and pretentious. Might pick this one up during the winter lul the characters look fun.

Gamergate-level rhetoric and paranoia that doesn't belong on GAF. Just the worst.

OT: Happy to see most enjoy it for the setting. Will happily pick this up in about 6 months when all is patched and the game's 25,-, as I did with Unity. Enjoyed that a lot.

The game was still shit though, albeit for other reasons.

I had over 37 full crashes in Unity, and counted over 112 total bugs in 50 hours of gameplay, some level stopping. That game was a buggy mess.

And I loved Rogue, Black Flag, and now Syndicate(aside from some bugs) But ya Unity was a disaster when it first came out and had no right being released.
Lol you realize imagining patterns is like what every crazy conspiracy is based on?
I chuckled.

I completed Unity before the patches (XB1) and didn't notice many glitches at all, the whole thing felt really overblown based on my experience. Admittedly though I just worked through the story, didn't mess about with side missions or anything.

Back on topic looking forward to this unlocking later!

Holy crap. Console or PC? I don't think it ever fully crashed on me. I did get a couple of weird floating bugs though.

They way I see it, its a relatively good game reviewed from a technical level (graphics, controls, amount of content etc) but the annual releases (and more eg rogue and unity same year) means that there is a general fatigue of just seeing similar elements to prior games. This is made worse because these games are designed to last dozens of hours, so many reviewers likely are feeling groundhog day'd because they are playing something so familiar and repetitive. I imagine playing some sports games like madden is the same thing, though I dont play them so I dont know if the same issues occur.

As someone who considers ac unity one if the best ac games in the series (after patching of course) , the review scores are giving me some hope . Better characters , better world , no stupid multiplayer jank sounds hopeful.

However I still will pick it up after a price drop as I feel like I'm burned out of the assassins gameplay (that pains me because I have brought everyone but unity day 1 ).

I just hope next years installment can change up the gameplay somewhat . Focus less on making the biggest map possible and tune the gameplay and mission structure .

Couldn't you just flip that statement and suggest that all the lower scores given by smaller sites are designed to attract attention and clicks? Both suggestions are equally ridiculous.

Let's stop looking for conspiracies, people. We're getting into kotakuinaction territory here.

You really believe that is commonplace? Like seriously?

I'd be really surprised if that kind of stuff didn't happen.

Anyway I will be waiting for user reviews as usual. Not really too interested unless Ubisoft pulled a 360° in the gameplay department. Don't have too much time anyway with another GOTY contender coming up next week.

The narrative of the "buggy mess" now extends to those who never played it. It's what happens with "worst game ever" lists too- you don't truly know the pain of Superman 64 until you beg your parents to rent it for you and then eat some humble pie. Unity really wasn't that bad compared to truly glitchy games. Some annoying glitches, but perfectly playable- though I liked the game a lot, but didn't like the Ezio games so my opinions sucks I guess :(

Still, Fallout New Vegas was a buggy mess on launch day. Batman Arkham Knight on PC was an unplayable buggy mess. Unity wasn't close to either of those.
