Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

Oh, that makes sense. In which case I'll apologize for my previous post as I wasn't aware.

I do think the rest of my post does hold some merit though. Reviewer and fan reception IMO seems to indicate general fatigue going on with the franchise in general.

Sorry no need to apologize. Its just that it happens all the time and its one of those things that keeps being explained but probably gets lost in all the other posts.

For me its the opposite. Not only does this game NOT feel fatiguing but has excellent changes and improvements. Its the bugs that hold me back.

I'm left to wonder if PC port is good this time around, or just shait that requires a lots of HW power to bruteforce it into acceptable performance level.

My top 4, too! Although I think I'd swap AC2 with AC Unity.

Though I've thoroughly enjoyed all the games for what they are. Really unique experiences.

Also AC Rogue at 1080p 60FPS with all the bells and whistles on a gaming PC is... Eye-opening. To say the least. I'm enjoying it far more than when I tried it on XB360.

yeah...Rogue's PC version is really good (and it's an underrated AC game in my opinion)

When is this coming out again?

I am going to wait till it comes out and trust gaf to let me know if this is at least as good as black flag or better

I loved black flag

Holy shit, now you're just embarrasing.

This is all opinions mate, you might want to accept that. Some like it, some don't. Simple as that.

A lot of people hate it without even playing it because they think it's cool to hate it. "It's Assassin's Creed, it's Ubisoft, yeah it's a shit game."

Obviously we don't know what's behind the dichotomy, but it's clearly not something random.

All the teams wearing blue advancing to the MLB's playoffs is a random event.
Most black Americans voting for Obama isn't. You can say it's just opinions. That doesn't make it so.

lol ok i'm out

I don't think anyone has ever tried to prove it, either through legal action or otherwise.

But we all know that the advertising budget and publisher pressure caused the Gerstmann Kane and Lynch incident. That scandal proved that the publisher had estimated a certain outcome for having paid the press site. Once the outcome was not advantageous, they threatened to pull funding and got Jeff in hot water.
Yeah, pretty much.
Along with boot camps, it is hard to trust just one site in general. That is why just like movies the average conveys a game more. Gamespot's 9 is just as valid as Telegraph's 4, despite what people say.

It's reviewing well. Good.

I'm still fatigued and but hurt that even that does not peak my interest untill a 20 dollar sale.....that's saying a lot for a game that is getting 9's

There are too many other games on the horizon that deserve my time before ubi gets a minute of it.

Fallout 4
Halo 5
Need for speed
Star wars
Sprinkle in some destiny

Pleasantly surprised by the scores :)

Might give it a look afterall.

I'm in a strange position where I find game reviews don't adequately criticise things I would find fault with in a game and thus find it hard to take much from modern game reviews and yet most sites were critical of Unity after that game came out and could have easily let that taint their opinion on this one and dogpiled on it were equally bad and no one bat an eye.

Some posts in this thread are downright embarrassing.

I'm very much looking forward to the game myself, just hoping that they keep their promises on the PC end.

I agree that the more popular websites appear to skew higher, however there are plenty of pretty good reviews from other sites.

Overall it sounds pretty good. Not amazing, but much better than people were expecting after Unity. They've figured out that people value a game that runs well, far more than a game that looks pretty. And they're slowly, sloooowly taking some steps with the gameplay.

From the cutscnes I've seen, the mood is a lot lighter. It's Arrow season 4 levels of turnaround in terms of tone.

My review at USgamer is finally up. I probably wrote too many words about the game and yet I never feel I cover everything.

Was just reading it. In spite of how you came away with it I think this is still a "wait for a price drop and when there's just nothing else to play" game for me. When I finally got around to Unity it wasn't anywhere near broken than it was at launch but it seems like Syndicate addresses a few of the issues I had with it (target-marking and the crowded map), but nothing about it so far is screaming must-play.

Guessing the combat didn't change from Unity? I thought it had good ideas but was ultimately a step back because they were often so drawn out (and guys with pistols just made it aggravating).

God I hated the guys with pistols in Unity. You now have a prompted response to pistols (press triangle and you dodge the bullet)

Sounds like a huge step up over Unity. I'm not in a huge rush to play it so I'll wait for a discount, but I'll definitely pick it up at some point.

Alexa talking up the lead characters and Eurogamer directly saying what a long time fan would want to know about an AC sequel helped a whole lot. I already know what I'm getting into with this series so highlighting what's different was much appreciated.

I agree 100%, this is what I look for in a new installment. I enjoy the gameplay and the setting, so I'm glad that it seems I'll be getting more of what I like

And the protagonists and the ability to play as both really helps it.

Just checked out the Giant Bomb quick look and the game looks pretty good. I haven't played an Assasin's Creed since Black Flag, but I may pick this one up.

what the fuck are you even saying

REVIEWERS ARE ALL SUPPOSED TO UNANIMOUSLY TELL ME IF SOMETHING IS GOOD OR BAD

IN THIS CASE, SOME SAY IT'S GOOD AND OTHERS SAY IT'S BAD

IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

How the hell did you ever make it past Junior? Whatever you're smoking, I'll have 5 pounds of it please. A shitpost for the ages. :')

Intrigued by the reviews.

Assassins Creed has the consistent ability to keep me interested in the games despite never enjoying any of the ones I've played. I blame the settings, which they've managed to do again with this version of London.

The 2 games I have played were 1 and 3.. so other than Unity I've pretty much played the worst the series has to offer, right? If I disliked 1 and 3, is it still worth giving this a go?

I dig it. I'm glad the review gave you enough info to make that determination.

They pulled back on the animation priority in combat, so countering or dodging bullets in the middle of a combo is instant, making it easier.

There's also the new Near Death state for enemies, which is for setting up multiple enemy finishing moves. They basically stumble around drunk.

My biggest thing with AC:Unity was the pop-in on npcs walking around. Npcs were literally changing clothes in front of me, and it totally broke the immersion for me. Escape to the roof tops you say? Sure, oh that building that is only feet away looks like something out of minecraft, do you even texture bro??

I'll admit, I'm a part of the problem - I have every AC game, and have played through none, not a single one to the end. Whether it's the pop-in, the poor performance, the stupid controls, or the amazing amount of filler the games have - I just haven't been able to pull the trigger and commit to one or any of the games in the series.

Why have I purchased all the games then? I love the IDEA of the game, I really do, and the art style, and settings. I do HATE the future timeline though, hate it - it can fuck right off - go be your own game, and leave me in my period setting.

Have I bought AC:S? Yes, again I was sold on the setting and again, I still love the idea of the game...but if that pop-in issue is present, I'm going to lose my shit, and really hate myself for buying into it....again.

Help me!

The one I've been the least hyped for is turning out to be really good? Huh.
I actually like most Assassin's Creed games so hopefully this one is even better.

I always like to leave the door open for a game to change my mind and that is exactly what happened with this one. After being dead-set on skipping AC this year, watching footage and listening to impressions the past few days made me realize that it was probably going to end up being much better than I initially thought it would be. It looks like that is indeed the case and I will be picking it up soon.

I've said it too many times arleady, Rogue was the sequel that Black Flag deserved. I really can't understand why it hasn't gotten a $20 current gen release already. I played through it on PC and enjoyed it far more than the portion of Unity I played before quitting for good.

My pet peeve from Unity and yes its better. Its far more fadein like any other title.

The do tend to mess up a bit when they try something new, then fix it with the next attempt

1 was new and meh, it was fixed for 2, which was good

3 was using a new engine I think, and was meh, 4 was great

Unity was the first game for current gen systems, and was a bit of a mess, so it makes sense Syndicate would be an improvement

That would be all well and good if they removed it completely, but they didn't. They wanted you to look for this incredibly important artifact for no reason whatsoever, and the story was framed and interrupted with the future characters. The story had no context whasoever, they clearly don't know what to do with the future story after they decided to stretch the series' plot after AC3's ending.

Yeah, but the story was literally always just as much bullshit since the end of the first game.

It was obvious at the end of AC1 that they had no strong sense of narrative and pacing and that the whole thing would become another 'Lost'.

And it did.

And so even though the 'sci fi' stuff is totally arbitrary and throwaway at this point, it's OK now because it barely gets in the way of 'go places and do stuff' which is all you really need anyway. They no longer waste loads of your time with it. They waste a little bit of your time still, yes, but reducing it to almost nothing and using the Animus idea to push some quirky, fun extra gameplay, is absolutely the best possible outcome (short of dropping the sci-fi stuff altogether).

You don't know how much it pleases me to know they're playing down the modern day part of the story.

Same. I loved Unity for that. They only used the modern day stuff for gameplay additions - eg the glitch free running challenges. They were great.

Yeah, I don't like the overworld design at all, but the actual mechanics seem really solid and the general level design seems excellent.

I didn't think the slight speed bump for sea combat would work, but it actually does. Sea battles are still awesome.

Just wish these games had a hard mode... All HUD off and crap armour is still too easy.

Great scores. I am glad that the people who buy it get a good game.

These reviews won't entice me to play it though, I am taking an AC vacation for at least 3-4 more years.

Now that's what i call a mixed bag of reviews, holy crap. I did not yet watch/read any of these reviews, but are the bugs as bad as Unity?

Better than Unity (patched) or not? I've bought Unity for 30€ yesterday... can still go back to the store and buy this one for 50€ tomorrow?

Also I've asked it already (and maybe it's kind of late now) but if I go for Unity maybe digital is better (for having the whole patched game on HD)?

Sorry it's not totally the subject of the thread but it's the best place to ask so I could decide imo since reviews are not all going in the same direction.
