GENOS is so epic this episode! One arm and all. Though this episode was once again one of the moments that made this series step so far down for me in terms of action. What would have improved it would have been
if Saitama had appeared when Genos was about to take the Acid and then Saved Genos and the girl in the process. Then we could have had a GenoSaitama combi takedown

Damn it, Genos needs to win one battle against a big bad guy! It wasn't cool seeing him get rekt again. At least he knows that he always lets his guard down.

Another amazing episode. Really loved the ending especially. I don't even watch any other anime but this series is making me want to.

Episode 9

Holy fucking shit. Kameda brought the fucking goods and he brought some amazing action animators along with him. Superb animation and art. Even the non-action scenes looked fucking on point. This more than made up for the lackluster production last week. Lol. SO FUCKING GOOD. The direction was great too. They really nailed the thematic point of the story here.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO START AN EPISODE LIKE THIS?????

God damn!

Not my favorite ep, but I'm probably being overcritical and comparing it to the other versions. Little disappointed Licenseless-Rider's speech before being KO'd was cut short, as it helped convey how identical Saitama and Rider's hero philosophies are. And bummed the letters scene was also undersold.

Oh well! On to the last three episodes! It'll be interesting to see how MadHouse handles the conclusion to the anime.

Volcano High Alumnus (Cum Laude)
Great episode. As someone who hasn't read the manga it's the first time we've really seen anything from Mumen Rider to suggest why he's a fan favourite.

One of my favorite episodes thus far. I don't really cry at things, but god damn. Feelings welled up hard. I've reread this part of the manga a few times because I love it so much. I thought the transition was pulled off fantastically. The added fight scenes for Genos and Licenseless Rider with Saitama stuff was real great too. God, the music, the animation, the bobbleheadness of Saitama's head. Everything is the best. I was so scared they cut the scene of
him stealing credit for a second. Really glad they backpedaled on that quick or that would of been the worst.

More episode spoilers -
I'm also glad they added a bit of stuff for the other heroes and even Puri Puri Prisoner feeling a little down. Licenseless Rider being floppily thrown up and down was also kind of horrifying and hilarious. In the manga it seemed much more quick and being thrown from side to side instead of up and down in place. Here it was kind of more drawn out to me and a tragic mix of horrifying/hilarious.

Man, fucking OPM is the best.

It wasn't cut short though? I'm looking at it side by side and it's practically the same speech and scene almost exactly.

Edit- Okay, in the official version the line of, "I'm the only one left!" is cut. Everything else is pretty much intact.
As much as I do love the songs its the only part of the anime that feels cheap. A few more songs wouldn't hurt.
I wouldn't be opposed to more songs, but the songs that are there are really great and when a song comes up that I can instantly hum along to with feelings welling up? I appreciate it a lot.

It might be just a difference between the official translation and the fan-translation of the manga I first read, but I did miss Mumen Rider's "if I won't fight, then who will?" part to his speech.

Episode 9

GOD DAMN did that deliver. animators really brought their A game. I'll admit I got scared they cut the real conclusion to the fight when they cut away to Saitama and Genos back at home but they included it as a flashback and hit it out of the park. A much better job here than with the fallout from the Meteor. Some little changes and additions but they were all for the best IMO.

I do wonder how many of the villains Saitama has defeated before the sea king were on a similar power level to him.

Because Saitama just defeats everything with a single punch it's basically impossible to gauge the power of any enemy that hasn't had a direct match up with another hero.

Its interesting to theorycraft just which other heroes might be able to take on the monsters Saitama fights. I like to believe that one or two of the S Rank heroes we'll meet later might have been able to take out the Sea King.

Honestly the Brains and Brawn Brothers from episode one are probably the strongest foes Saitama has beaten so far this season.

God damn it. I was hoping Sea King would be more of a challenge. Even Carnage Kabuto managed to hit Saitama more, though Sea King at least left a mark. Though I guess that's the point of the show :p

Also, how did Mask grow his hair so fast?

Honestly the Brains and Brawn Brothers from episode one are probably the strongest foes Saitama has beaten so far this season.

That guy was insanely destructive. Carnage Kabuto also seemed really strong considering hwo fast and easily he crushed Genos. I guess now Genos is stronger but Genos only fought him in his regular form.

I think stuff like that giant Aniki, Vaccine Man and Carnage Kabuto were Dragon.

I feel that part might not have been there which is a shame if that's the case.

I really liked the bit of music with the guitar during the scene when
Saitama is diverting credit.
It felt like a slower version of another song, but I can't place which.

Hell even the crowd shots were well animated.

Next saga is one of the best so hang on to your butts.

Well, that's because he was so stunned that he almost missed sale day that Carnage Kabuto got a few lucky hits in. Sale day was that important.

His hair also works in mysterious ways. It switches from long to short pretty regularly. Almost every appearance as far as I remember.

Shame Licenseless-Rider's
"If the heroes run, who will stand to protect people?"
speech got cut out, but the additions to the episode were very nice.

Ye~p. I was really looking forward to that line, as Saitama said something similar in a prior episode and it would've hammered home how identical their hero philosophies are even though they're on complete opposite ends of the power spectrum.

Even though I knew Genos would be ok, that scene of him getting dissolved was brutal to watch! And lightening eye? Dude gets an upgrade every episode, aha.

Edit:

It wasn't cut short though? I'm looking at it side by side and it's practically the same speech and scene almost exactly.
Almost exactly. Rider remarks on how heroes never run and how, paraphrased, he doesn't have a choice but to fight no matter if he's weak because no one is left. It's what Heroes do; Threat level is irrelevant. It's almost exactly what Saitama says sometime before ep9, but it has a bit more weight coming from a guy who actually doesn't have a chance to win.

Minor gripe, really. I'm just a huge Licenseless fan and wanted him to shine brighter. :p

Everybody knows that when the hero is hated by everybody it makes him better to root for.

One Punch Man 9

Anime. Saved.

Such amazing A-game animation and fight sequences, and the speech. Dark comedy was spot on with Mumen Rider
getitng rekt
hahaha. And of course the anti-climactic end to the battle because OPM.

Genos really is here to bring us the cool fight sequences hahaha.

Whoa, that was awesome. That Mumen Rider speech made me a little teary but I attribute it to the voice actor that also did Tomoya from Clannad, its linked now to sadness. Why is Saitama hurting his own reputation, such tragedy, he deserves better.

He doesn't care about his reputation really.

Licenseless Rider and his moment with Saitama was amazing
JUSTICE CRASH
. What's the page/ch. for the missing line? I don't see it in the web translation of the fight, or is the monologue supposed to be somewhere else?

Edit: Nvmnd found it now. Might be just some weird translation differences, but either way, Licenseless Rider's actions gets the point across.

It's not that he doesn't care (I mean, he gets a bit excited in this very episode when he gets letters and the series is sparkled by little things like that), it's that he believes there are things more important than his reputation.

Yeah the giant Aniki's path of destruction & Carnage Kabuto seemingly being far more destructive than the mosquito girl are clear signs of how dangerous they were.

I wonder how much better Genos would fare against mosquito girl nowadays, considering he constantly upgrades his weapons/body.

Must be the source of his power.

Why is Saitama hurting his own reputation, such tragedy, he deserves better.

Probably bbecause he believes that the idea of the hero is more important than he is and was afraid that what happened that day would harm it so he was willing to take a bullet for the team.

Yeah this. He cares about his reputation but not at the cost of the happiness/emotional health of others. If him becoming the bald villain means people won't
doubt the hero's association
then he'll go for it.

Regardless Genos seems to have made it clear that he has seen enough of that and that next time
it happens he'll make it public knowledge just how amazing he is

He might be able to take her. Although, her maxed out mode totally destroyed a building in one hit, so she's no pushover. Genos would definitely win with a later upgrade which we won't get to see this season, though.

Reading the manga I was under the impression that Genos could've beaten the Sea King if he hadn't been careless and lost his arm and then had to save that girl, but watching it in the anime its pretty clear he wasn't doing any permanent damage.

Holy fuck this show, I feel like this thread needs a title change that suggests that even if you don't care for anime you should watch One Punch.

It definitely has an appeal for western audiences, but I wouldn't call that title fair. PLENTY of anime shows/movies exists that could fall into the "if you don't watch anime still watch this" but not many of them deal with a topic that is the rage right now (aka superheroes).

I really rally hope they dont go with a standard "anime dub voice" for saitama...would love a traditional western cartoon voice actor.

This seems to just be translation differences. The only line missing from the official version that I see is, "I'm the only one left!"

For the fan translated version the line of, "Because if I don't, who else will?" is cut. That harkens back to Saitama's line for sure, but I'm afraid that might just be a mistranslation.

While I agree they can get more talent that's doing a disservice to plenty of fantastic dub anime VA's out there. Liam O'Brien being one. I wouldn't say he's the perfect choice for Saitama by a mile but for other characters yeah.
