What bench press 3x5 weight would you guys consider to no longer be in the beginner range? It's hard to get a sense of how strong I actually am, or where I should be to feel I have accomplished something. Let's say the body weight range is 180-190.

Can you 3x5 bodyweight? If so, you're definitely not a beginner

This site might be of some help. Not sure if there are objective strength standards out there.

It's based on your one rep max, though.

I'm still in between novice and intermediate when it comes to the bench. :(

Actually, on second glance, I'm around the same in-between novice/intermediate stage for all of my main lifts (bench, squat, deadlift).

I had no idea fasting had an effect on that. Very interesting.

Also fasting helps fight cancer as cancer cells can't handle being without food/sugar apparently. Also it triggers something which makes radiation therapy attack cancer cells more efficiently while your normal cells remain more or less unaffected, resulting in more intensive treatment possibility.

So if you ever get cancer, keep in mind that fasting and/or keto could actually help the treatment work better.

Here's an interesting video and article on the topic.

My aunt got cancer a few years back and went strictly zero carb. She also treated with chemotherapy and she is in complete remission now. No idea what the future holds, but it certainly looks promising for her.

I'd be doing backflips if I could 3X5 my current bodyweight. Plus, my chest would probably look awesome too. Ugh my bench sucks, as does my OHP

But in better news, I successfully DL 315lbs!!! Felt so good getting to 3 plates on that lift. Now my Squat and DL have a combined 640lbs+. Feels good.

Definitely a possible explanation for why I have caught a cold only twice in over 5 years (both times during periods when I was experimenting with carb back loading) since going primarily low/no-carb compared to my life before that where I would get sick pretty frequently as far back as I can remember.

Separate from full blown colds, I would also frequently have sinus, soar throat and head ache issues, but all of that disappeared.

Looking back on those days, I really wonder how I even functioned.

Before low carb I was also sick all the time. Life got a lot better once I fixed up diet. Fasting helped even more.

I've read a very long and complicated article that basically says this is mostly bollocks. It's a very popular belief, but it's not actually backed up by that much science.

Edit - This covers the general gist of it: http://anthonycolpo.com/ketogenic-diets-for-cancer-promising-cure-or-wishful-thinking/

Ok so it seems the keto effect is bullshit then. Makes sense when you think about it.

The fasting I was actually talking about, is from a documentary I saw a few years ago. In it, in some US hospital they had patients fast for three days before receiving treatment which apparently made them respond better. Dunno what's the final word on it though. At least it seemed pretty promising.

Anyway, here's hoping to researchers perfecting the use of viruses in cancer treatment in the near future..

Yeah. It's so hard to answer because bodies are all so different.

Great news on the DL!! How much do you weigh?

Thanks guys, my bench has always sucked but getting hit with the double whammy of weight loss + not benching at all due to my shoulder injury made going back difficult. Percentage wise, Im rapping more than when I was heavier, which is pretty neat.

What's your combined big 3 now??

got a stupid question but here goes. I'm currently cutting but I've got a football (soccer) game tonight. What should I eat before and after to prevent muscle loss? I usually eat 1400-1500 kcal on rest days.

You're very unlikely to push yourself so hard that you cause muscle loss in such a short time. Unless you decide to run end to end continuously for the hell of it.

Just make sure you have a bit of protein in you and get a decent recovery meal.

Edit - Ugh @ Core / Abdomen thread. Those fucking infomercials have a lot to answer for. At least there are people with some knowledge posting though.

Not sure what the consensus is with carbs and cardio but I'm thinking protein shake + banana before the game (carbs for some energy), and chicken + rice pwo. Sound fine?

How long do you guys think I should give my legs to fully recuperate from lifting before a very strenuous and rugged grand canyon backpacking trip I'm taking in a few weeks? Should I just take a week off from legs leading up to it?

Just taper, do less reps or lower weight. Stopping completely is never a good idea before you're about to do something particularly strenuous.

Alright, got it! I'm the only weight lifter of the group, I wonder if my comparably stronger quads are going to make much of a difference in terms of my endurance. Probably only slightly.

Ah man that chart is depressing. I'm assuming the weight listed are for healthy non-obese people. I weigh 230, but my lean body weight is probably closer to 160. Either way my bench is pretty weak. My max is about 155x6

I've been lifting regularly since June last year. I'm finding myself in Novice. Thanks for posting this!

Last I checked, I was 215. I wanted to get to 220 before going on a cut, but the last few weeks of school was killer in terms of me keeping up with 3100 calories. I probably should be lifting more, but I'm not even a year into this whole fitness thing.

I'd be in the dick
I've struggled with my weight a lot the past few years but I've officially lost 21 pounds! It's a really big deal for me my goal for the year was 30 and I did 21 in just over two months.

Good work pal. Stay the course!

I also stopped getting sick years ago once I started keto. Went for a good two years without even the slightest inkling of any kind of sickness. It's great.

I've certainly haven't been on a Keto diet this year, but my carb intake after doing so last year went from 250g+ to under 100g per day, which I've been maintaining. I enjoy having some carbs, but I now feel terrible if I eat much more than 200g.

There you go bud! We miss you around here

Ahhh Bum I miss you too bro. I have been such a loser lately. Winter sapped all my motivation so I was just lifting to maintain but now the Sun is finally back like a Phoenix and I'm ready to get the fuel that only fitGAF can provide.

Haven't truly maxed in a while but it's gotta be close to 1000 which I'm happy with. Recently I've been thinking of scaling my numbers back to the 80% and just crushing the 5/3/1 days with a lot of back off work. It's worked wonders for my buddy. I'm not as focused on chasing a higher total anymore especially with summer around the corner.

I think this might be the last year I focus on increasing my strength. To really hit the numbers I want I have to get pretty big and shedding that weight in the summer is just becoming more and more tiresome. Course I say this at the end of every winter.

I was just breaking the threshold of intermediate on most lifts when I started fat loss last year.

Haven't looked at it in a while and looking at it again makes me want to get back off the fat loss I just restarted and go back to gains.

Can't think about that now... Can't think about that now... Eyes on the goal....

I saw you're going to be doing the FFXV OT??? I'm probably more excited for the OT than the game and I'm fired up for the game!!

Good for you dude. That's an awesome number at your size...you should be extremely proud
