Original Snake Voice David Hayter Has No Love For Hideo Kojima (Kotaku)

Hayter was great in MGS1-3.

MGS1-3 were the peak of the Metal Gear franchise.

Coincidence?!

I felt Keifer was mediocre, but Hayter's gravelly voice has kind of taken a toll over the years.

Peace Walker was the final straw for me, and i would guess Kojima as well. Hayter was not a terrible voice actor, but he was so hit and miss with every release.

I've always felt his voice acting was kind of mediocre, but his tone pretty much helped define Snake's identity. That's what I missed the most in TPP, his tone of voice...

Hayter is a like a ex who won't shut up about being dropped. He should been ditched in MGS3 like the article mentions they were planning he should never of done Big Boss. Dude needs go out and get some air instead of moaning over this it going affect possibility of future jobs. Who going hire a guy who bitches about your company non stop if you decide not to use him

I sincerely don't understand how "responds question when asked during an interview" is the same as being an ex who won't shut up. Like, dude was asked what he thought, answered a couple questions then moved on. That was like four minutes of his time at most.

After playing 5 for a few hours I'm so grateful that they replaced Hayter. He's a really bad VA. his performance keeps me from playing MGS of old.

Seems like a fundamental misunderstanding about their working relationship. Hayter felt like there was some sort of connection to the character and a sense of responsibility and expectation after working together on the series for many years, while Kojima seemed to feel that Hayter was just an employee/voice actor that could be easily replaced to gain some star power.

That sucks... and as some pointed out already, he worked for Kojima for years and years and still doesn't know him as a person... that says a lot actually.

It says nothing really. The guy is just a voice actor and not even the sole voice actor for Snake. I get that he'd be pissed but come on now.

Or he could just move on instead of being immature about the whole thing. Ever since this started he's been immature about this. On twitter and he keeps harping on it. Sure the situation could have been handled better but at the end of the day they went a different direction. Something they should have done with MGS3.
Hayter was amazing on MGS3 so I have no idea why you would write such an awful statement.

I think Hayter deserved a courtesy call from someone to tell him about the replacement. It appeared that he learned of Sutherland when we did and that seems to be pretty insulting for a guy who has played that character up until that point. I'd be mad about that, not necassirly that they wanted to go a different direction, but that they didn't tell me about it. Also, they could have offered him a different character to voice in MGSV. I'm sure he's got other voices he can do.

I'm asking just a thing. If MGS wasn't that famous, Hayter will care that much?

Hayter was the voice of snake, Solid Naked or otherwise, whilst he might not be perfect he is a million miles better than Sutherland was as Venom Snake! Sutherland barely spoke, as obviously his fee was so high, it was explained he was placed in so they could get that Hollywood voice delivery and facial expressions, which would have been palatable if we ever saw snake talk and saw any emotional delivery!
I love MGS V but its story was too thinly spread and snake might as well have been a voiceless protagonist, hell the vast majority of the voice and story is in the audio tapes, it lost a lot of the Metal Gear Solid feel for me. Perhaps if they'd had Hayter the game would have cost less to produce and that saved money could have been used for more story.

And as a persona who's done the job for over a decade i can understand why he's salty if his boss (Kojima) didn't even have the decency to tell him himself or let him know upfront, to have to find out because you'd taken a producer for lunch to offer your services is insulting
Blind Love for Kojima shouldn't mask how thats just plain shitty!

Uh, compared to full time voice actors that's nothing.

Point was it's not small by any means even if it was taken as a hobby and not his full time work as he stated. Dude is passionate and that's great.

Every time is the same story with these threads. Hayter isn't good, he got worse, he's begging, dude is full of himself, blabla, no matter how many times his qualities and passion are proven.
Well, whatever. He has my respect for speaking his mind, and in my opinion he dodged a bullet with MGSV. Thank you for your work and good luck for the future.

This. It's kind of hard to discuss with people about Hayter when they have set their mind to their never changing negative opinion even though he has done many interviews and other things besides and about MGS but you still get the same things in every thread that mentions David Hayter. You also have the group of people that hated his "Snake" voice since day 1 so, yeah.

As I said previously, Hayter as Solid Snake to me is like Conroy as Batman. I grew up with their voices and it's the only voices I hear whenever I see pictures of the characters. People can hate as much as they want but that's the way I feel about them embodying the characters, they make the characters to me. Adore both.

I know some people are going to gang up on Hayter, but don't forget that just like Kojima, he has had an intricate role in creating the character of Solid Snake. For him this is his art as he is obviously passionate about it. For him this feels like a betrayal similar to the one Kojima experienced at Konami. I sympathize with the guy. Voice actors really do get the shaft.

I'm not really seeing how Hayter is still salty about it, he's the one who keeps on getting asked about it. Sure it must've hurt him, he obviously had a connection to the character who he played for over a decade. I just think he's having some fun on Twitter whenever he brings it up.

That being said, he sucked in Peace Walker. But Kiefer is bad in MGSV (although there's not much to work with tbh).

I guess if there's one thing I can thank MGSV for, it's for killing any interest I had in that series anymore.

Did he ever get another high profile role in a game outside of MGS? I know he's a screenwriter but I feel MGS was a big opportunity for him in voice acting. Like any other job you lose it eventually, nothing is eternal.

Kojima was always obsessed with Hollywood so it's no surprise that he wanted someone well known for V. And to be fair Hayter wasn't great in Peace Walker and 4. The only terrible thing Kojima did about this is to not explain why he did the change after such a long series of game. I remember the unveil video with Sutherland where the VA producer was talking about changing for someone that could be subtle but that's about it.

Sutherland does talk in the game, it's much more in the tapes though. The only thing I didn't like is that I felt all VA sounded the same on tape so sometimes I had no idea if it was Miller, Snake or Ocelot talking. All of the drama surrounding the change seems another internet tantrum to me.

I'm sure people would be thinking differently about Sutherland had MGSV been a better game. Kojima is at fault for trying to make Snake a silent protagonist, but I actually enjoyed Sutherland's performance whenever he spoke.

I hope Kojima understands that the fans of the games all, I think, strongly identify the characters with their voices.

They selected fantastic people for the roles and they were all amazing, Hayter included.

Highlighting/quoting some parts

Thank you, I was pretty sure the whole "they made me re-audition" thing was very suspect since VAs don't get long-term contracts. There's some common courtesy stuff if a role is recast, but that's generally between VAs themselves, like Rob Paulsen calling up Barry Gordon when he was cast as Donatello in the most recent TMNT series.

Pointing out, why should he shut up when he is specifical asked how he feels? I havent heard the podcast, but it seems for me like he was asked how he feels and I like it more when we dont get a pr friendly answer aka "ok, its so ok and I still love Kojima, he is still by best buddy". Whats the point of something like this? I like honest interviews.

But hey, doesnt matter, the hayter-hater will continue to shit on him.

he will still work with them because they will pay him. easy to say you won't when you won't receive andy proposal. anyway, he was really pushing the "snake voice" in Walker and i tought it didn't sound natural

I'm shocked Hayter never met Kojima. Hayters voice was a huge part of the series for me...weird to think he was just dropped.

On one side, Hayter will always be Snake to me. On the same note, I don't see the job being owed to him, but I can understand the awkwardness of ingesting a franchise you helped build.

Hayter's voice in Peace Walker was OTT but the actual acting was fine. He actually delivers his lines with inflection that Kiefer really didn't.

He can do MGS1 Snake pretty well still and that's impressive given how long it's been. He's humble in the fact that he admits he had some faults in his performance but man. His voice is iconic.

I mean compare hayter's "kept you waiting. Huh?" to Kiefer's and it's clear that Hayter got the goofy scripts in a way that Kiefer just didn't.

MGS is a dumb anime and that's why Hayter's voice worked. It made no sense to have kiefer's super serious performance with every one else acting so OTT.

Furthermore, David has every right to be salty. He was a big part of the franchise and interacts with fans all the time. He always used to reply to people on imdb and he gave up a lot of his paycheck to get the original cast back for twin Snakes.

He treated Kojima with a lot of respect. On the 20th anniversary he filmed a video clip saying thank you to Kojima that obviously had a lot of time and effort put into it. He spoke completely in Japanese and Kojima dumps him without even having the gauls to tell him. David only found out he was kicked from the series because he contacted them because he loves playing Snake.

It sucks, there's no excuse and David has handled it pretty well. He only comments now when people ask him and I'm glad he has the guts to say it how it is.

He said he respects Kojima for his mind but is dissapointed with how he acted as a businessman and thats fair. Why bootlick for the sake of it?

Knowing how little he speaks in MGSV, can't someone create a mod and add his voice in? Maybe an impersonator does Hayter's snarly Snake voice?

Yeah that's what I was about to say. It doesn't matter that much becuase he barley speak in MGSV.

Same, I dug Sutherland and I'd take him over hayter anyday. His lack of speech is mainly bad writing and a mediocre story.

Are all voice actors this snivelingly pathetic or is this trait limited to Hayter alone. Get over it, you lost.

I'm so fucking tired of these pathetic comments...

Exactly.

Wanted to add that while I do love Kojima theres no doubt he has an ego. I mean on the collectors edition disk there's a documentary disk with all of his Hollywood buddies telling him how great he is. Hardly if any of his team whose actually worked with him all this time.
