Zelda Wii U - Recap of 5 hours gameplay stream

So, anyone have thoughts on the rune abilities? I bet there will be more than the 4 they showed today, but I wonder how many. Also, I'm very curious if we'll get a return to Zelda style items or if the runes will end up replacing those. By that I mean hookshot rune, boomerang rune, etc.

Any word on aiming with the gyro? I know all the waggle controls are gone, but it seems to be still compatible with the tablet controller. I really enjoyed broadly aiming with the stick and fine tuning with the gyro.

Skyrim is not that big. Witcher 3 isn't huge, but it is big. I admittedly forgot about Just Cause, so will be interesting to see a comparison there.

Take this following image with a spoon of salt, because I'm not sure on the accuracy:

Just Cause 2 was pretty enormous, but considering it was barren as fuck and designed for flying around in jets, it's not a great contender.

Dust2, best map ever made
shows size don't matter

there were 6 slots plus the amiibo one

Some of these Shrines have to increase hearts/stamina and ability effectiveness

Also you wonder what the Dungeons will have in them

Yeah. His default life bar is three hearts but you can make it longer by completing the challenge dungeon in Twilight Princess - your remaining health when you're done the dungeon gets saved to the amiibo and will be your Wolf LInk's new healthbar in BotW.

Oh well, time to go get TP to prepare for BotW!

I counted 6 slots with the amiibo:

2 for bombs
1 for magnesis
1 for stasis
1 for ice block shindig
1 for amiibo

Yeah you could tell from the stream they were aiming with the gyro, at least for fine tuning. Likely similar to the past 4 3D Zelda remakes.

Giving you a point to get to on an open map that you have to figure out how to get to is hand holding?

Getting to the point they direct you to is not particularly difficult or puzzling, in this instance. They just want to send you in the right direction.

That said, the larger Zelda game will probably be like Metroid Prime, where they highlight a specific zone or section of the map, but expect you to know what to do once you get there. It isn't going to be as confusing as Metroid 1 or Zelda 1.

Most people think they showed too much but it's questions like this that reaffirm that we have barely scratched the surface on the amount of information in this game. I feel so happy that I didn't skip this as I originally intended to.

•There are hidden Kuroks all over the place, this is from WW so this is tied to that timeline.

Yeah I saw that and was like "what" lol. Anyway, game looks amazing. I wish we saw a town/real dungeon, but I'm happy with what we did see and its mostly spoiler free besides a few things. Great stuff and huge attention to detail. I love all the little things such as fire spreading, creative ways to do combat, etc. It's all really great and I just can't wait to get this game! Gonna have to play through twilight princess HD (been sitting sealed since I got it) before it comes out though. Anyways, can't wait!

Stream completely sold me, can't wait. Shall definitely be buying an NX for this as well, I want as good a version as possible.

It's pretty neat for a Zelda demo to get such a positive reception from most people. I kinda didn't expect it, even if the game turned out great.

•You mark the world map. Its not filled with a ton of stupid markers. If you see something you cant reach yet, leave a treasure marker, or an enemy marker for a tough enemy.

I was really excited about this, but then I heard that its not true. Seems like you can climb towers and fill out the map with icons, similar to Assassin's Creed and other open world ubi games.

Yeah, it's pretty fucking big... Gamezone says Xenoblade Chronicles X's map is bigger than Skyrim, Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3's maps combined.

*EDIT* By my estimation, The Witcher 3 (136Km^2 + Fallout 4 + Skyrim) = the size of Just Cause 2's Panau. I could be off, but this seems about right.

Welp. I had played 300 hours of Xeno X and i do had to agree that the sense of scale is crazy and even when we use Skells, to reach the end of the continent never seems easy lol.

And if this Zelda even beat Xeno X in that scale, i can't picture how long i am going to play this game lol. Forever?

I saw how smooth the aiming was, but every time I looked at the players they never seemed to be moving their hands. I must have missed it (every time lol...).

Good to see though! I honestly wish that there was a pro controller with a gyro built in just to continue this functionality for the future. I think it's the only good thing to come out of motion controls for traditional consoles.

Not sure how I feel about all those slow mo stuff. This isn't call of duty, and I feel like it would ruin the fluidity/pace of the game. I like cinematic, but not in the middle of the gameplay unless its against a boss or a cutscene.

Thanks OP for this great summary.
Now I'm gonna watch all the gameplay again. And again. And again and again and again.

I saw the GameXplain gameplay of the E3 demo and while there are towers they don't end up filling out the map with icons and markers - they just make the map of the zone visible, if you know what I mean? Like, it's not an empty space with borders anymore, but an actual map of the zone.

The icons and markers are up to the player, mostly :)

XCX's open world seems...kinda 'just there' compared to this, IMO.

Based on what I saw, and the fact that can only move fast on ground I see this map as considerably smaller than Xenoblade X.

Who cares, though? Having a bigger map doesn't mean the world is better- in fact it makes it harder to have good content- and what we've seen makes it clear that the full game will be massive enough for anyone.

Where did you hear it isn't true? They showed the fully mapped plateau region in the stream and showed that you have the ability to place a wide variety of marker types anywhere you want, like the skull marker at an enemy camp.

Liked everything I saw, Only thing is I wished combat was a bit more complex. It looks better than previous titles but when you look at something like Horizon(best combat I've seen so far, could be the new staple) it would be cool if it more engaging combat. Can't say I'm a fan of the slow-motion/QTE

Goddamn this is the Zelda I never knew I wanted. It's fucking Zelda, with a better combat system, in a huge open world with "crafting".

Pissed off I bought the digital version of Twilight though, and didn't get the fucking wolf.

Played this at E3, and as many of you know I was skeptical as fuck going in

and well...

Game controls effortlessly, few frame drops after running out of stamina or bomb explosions but nothing as bad as the stream they showed the game off with

Playing the demo definitely made me want more of the game, and restored all confidence. It's so pretty, and my god is it vast. Don't know what to say since I am assuming treehouse went over everything I'm guessing but bombs are unlimited now and recharge. You bring them out with L, throw with R or lay it down, and then explode it with L again. ZL is Z-targeting, ZR or R I forget which is for arrows. You can't run and cut grass, but I'm hoping they put it in. Enemies don't hit hard but they have Skyward Sword AI, so they are smarter than previous games?? Most importantly we played the intro and there were like no tutorials, they plop you down tell you about the sheikah stone and you go. Twas dope as fuck.

Also idk how to describe it, but the atmosphere of the game is SO FUCKING UNIQUE it's insane. It's not like elder scrolls, witcher, zelda, etc. It's like an organic discovery video game simulator if that makes sense lmao.

Btw even though camera is free roaming and not fixed I wasn't getting motion sickness from it, so those of you like me who get nauseous from games sometimes you should be a-okay with this game. It was the most impressive game I saw day 1.

It remains to be seen whether Zelda will offer that amount of content or fun. However I would say that from what we've seen, from a purely physics and environmental interaction viewpoint, it is well beyond Witcher 3 (and most open world games) in terms of sophistication.

Yes, I agree that Zelda here offers much more in terms of gameplay than Witcher 3, but I very much doubt it will get even close to Witcher 3 is other departments like world building, immersive hand crafted feel, story telling, voice acting, quest design, etc.

I am keen to see a story trailer/cutscene, and some story quests. If they can do this aspect justice, then this will be one of the best open world games ever made.

Ohhh i disagree here.^_^ The sense of scale when you actually jump around to reach all those hidden and difficult to reach artifacts, treasures. When you found a hidden vista and of course finally uses skells to reach all those place which taunted you first when you are still traveling with foots.

The Open World is there for all the exploration which i feel truly worth it.^_^

Probaby not enough room lol.
It was basically the Galactus of open world games until Breath of the Wild.

Lol, is this going to be another It is too big meme like Ridley for Smash lol.

Played it today, went through the opening 20 minutes through the first trial (among other bits). Some story stuff that may have been mentioned but I didn't see anywhere:

This Link has been asleep for 100 years. Ganon is mentioned, but there was a word in front of his name I can't remember. He's this miasma at this point that you're trying to stop. A big, swirly black mass.

Dan from Giant Bomb said when he played the demo, he used the Sheikah Slate to summon a tower, and when he climbed to the top it said something like "Regional Area Map expanded". No one knows what it means exactly yet.

I did screencap at least one of those moments.

red and blue things are markers.

EDIT: this is not the whole map, by the way. You can clearly see there's more to it in every side.
Yeah, even when they zoomed out, it looked like they could still pan at least a little. But I want big, and even if it is "empty", I'd be fine with it, so maybe I was just hopeful.

Im liking what I saw, but I'm kind of worried of the micromanaging. Seems like you're breaking up the flow by being in menus and inventory constantly since there's no more hearts in the world to replenish health.

XCX's open world doesn't have much in the way of interaction. It's like every other open world game out there.

Zelda's is very different. This game doesn't even have a tutorial.

Calamity Ganon, also the trailer they showed before we saw the demo was different too. I don't think they've released it to the public yet, there was some footage there that we got to see.

For weapons you can press left of the D-pad and then use the right stick to switch. And then in the menu after you press start you can use the right analog stick to switch between whole menus. And everything is so far apart that it's not a big hassle. Although I didn't start a fire and make food during my playtime, I was just exploring the world.

The video on YouTube comparing NES Zelda and this one was super cool and as they talked I started to bridge the two. The art style borders so closely to actual anime. Some snapshot moment felt like concept art in motion which has been my pipe dream for games since childhood. So close to achieving that.

Puzzles, exploration, progression, progressing with items, consuming items, surviving, everything shown was a logical extension of the spirit of the original games (well, okay, slow mo does feel right out of Bayonetta).

Or maybe I just love the gameplay in Zelda II and hate seeing Souls credited for that style of combat and progression.

Puzzles weren't a huge feature of the original two Zelda games; combat was. For all the hype about this game being a return to the feeling of the original LoZ, the enemies showed in the demo were few and far between. And while there were some genuinely tough enemies, they were easy to avoid and easy to survive thanks to the game's abundance of health restoring food items.

How does the shield work? Does it get taken out automatically when L Targeting or do you have to press a button to use it?

Well, from looking at the map images we have I assume that means that the particular region they're in geta filled in with color, topography, etc. rather than with icons. Like I said the plateau is fully colorized with terrain info but had no markers other than ones the player placed.
