Good news for everyone wondering about Amazon pre-orders, looks like the customer service just didn't know the details:

Thank God, that was really making me nervous.

So how well does the game refresh you on the events of 999 and VLR? Should I look for some summaries beforehand to help me remember?

Yeah, you should ;) It's the third part of an incredibly convoluted time travel story, there's only so much they could do. They do re-introduce (and sometimes even rename) certain concepts, but often they also just reference stuff from 999 and VLR as a matter of fact where any person who doesn't really remember the games all too well or hasn't played them at all would just go "Uh, sorry, yeah, THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY?!"

One example would be (Virtue's Last Reward Spoiler, NOT a Zero Time Dilemma Spoiler. I repeat, NOT a Spoiler for Zero Time Dilemma, everyone chill :p)
Phi teasing Sigma about his real age and just going "Hey dude, you are really 67 because you travelled through time with your mind, aren't you an old fart, eh?" out of nowhere, just stating it as a fact.
If you weren't 100% aware of the past games' storylines you'll just be really, really confused constantly :p

Thanks for linking that! I feel reassured. That person's experience sounds more like what I'd expect out of a sequel to VLR.

That's not the only review that has praised the English voice acting. Literally everyone who brings up the voice acting has said it's fantastic:

nintendoworldreport
"Fully voiced with excellent VA"

gamespew
"Both the Japanese and English voice casts also deserve proper recognition. Each actor brings their character to life. The emotions they convey are complex and multi-faceted, so their success cannot be understated. Personally, I left the English cast on for the majority of my playthrough. Their voices seemed to match the bodies just a little bit better. However, you have the option to change them on the fly, so if you like one team’s Japanese VAs more than their English VAs (or vice versa) it’s just a button press away."

ztgd
"Both the English and Japanese voice acting deserves special mention as the performances are all around quite stellar. It always puts a smile on my face to hear D.C. Douglas doing his Albert Wesker like voice in another game!"

iplaypsvita
"+ Voice acting is done well"

Honestly? I think it's safe to just ignore Gaming Bolt's comment regarding the voice acting.

YES!

I enjoyed the English VA. It was pretty decent but there are a few scenes between Junpei and Carlos and Sigma and Phi/Diana were I was blown away. It was way beyond what you would expect from a low budget, niche, handheld game.

So would you recommend the English VA if one enjoyed the VLR English VA? Because the trailers were having me consider the Japanese VA.

Yes. Honestly the only English VA that bothered me was Akane's.
Hm, that's a shame. (VLR spoilers, not ZTD)
I didn't care for her English voice during the epilogue in VLR either (always pictured her sounding closer to how Luna did before then), so I was hoping for an improvement over that.

They also changed the VA.

Just out of curiosity, what made Akane's VA bother you? From hearing her in the trailers I wasn't so sure about it, and hearing this doesn't help obviously haha.

I actually prefer her original VA over the new one (from the trailers anyway). I can't describe how I envision Akane to sound, but neither one are exactly it but based on what I've heard from the trailers and what I heard in VLR I prefer that one just a smidgen.

Super bummed Amazon is shipping the games on release day though, anyone think if I choose one day shipping that I'll get it on release day instead? lol. I'd much prefer to play it day one but also prefer to not go digital. :(

The VA just didn't give a good performance and it was especially awkward in certain scenes...

Yeah, the only returning VA is Phi, apparently.

I'm ok with that.

Sigma sounds the same anyway.

It makes sense for Diana to sound slightly different from Luna.

And
young Akane
had like 2 minutes worth of dialogue in VLR. So I don't mind if it's a little different.

Gotcha. Thanks! If I'm not mistaken though, I believe her VA is
Rena Strober?
who played
Azura/Aqua in Fire Emblem Fates
and I didn't care for her much then either. :(

The end of VLR made me wish that 999 had been voice acted. I know it's not likely, but I would loooove it if voice acting got put in for the Steam release.

I'm pretty sure Diana isn't Laura Bailey. Her voice is close, though.
It's Eden Riegel. Honestly, I don't know why I spoilered the main cast when my only concern was the type of character one of the unpaired VOs could end up playing. Here's the main cast separate from my previous post:

Carlos - ???
Eric - Keith Silverstein (Credited as David Roach)
Phi - Karen Strassman
Q - Jonquil Goode (Credited as Joni Goode)
Junpei - ???
Akane - Rena Strober
Diana - Eden Riegel (Uncredited)
Mira - Rachel Kimsey (Nozomi in Persona 4: Dancing All Night)
Sigma - Matt Mercer
Zero - DC Douglas (Uncredited)

Noto Mamiko is going to be playing Diana, so it has to be the Japanese audio for me. To be fair, I almost always pick the Japanese audio when it's available. Except for Dynasty Warriors where the English VA pronunciations are a lot closer to the real thing.

Interesting, thanks. I was worried there would be something like [VLR Spoiler]
old/young Akane (e.g. two voice actors listed for Q or Zero)
hidden behind the spoilers.

I'm extremely confused...

ZTD SPOILER
I don't understand how the
flowchart works. I'm at the beginning and just did QCD first decisions twice. New paths opens, but as soon as I did the last remaining, the game kept going.

Dis the right way lol?

Nvm... Got it now.

In the OT, can we just have a section dedicated to saying: "YES, YOU NEED TO PLAY 999 AND VLR BEFORE PLAYING THIS"

And mention that Uchi has all but confirmed 999 for Steam/Vita, and hinted at VLR too, so people without the means to play them aren't put off, or decide to just skip them anyway.

Why doesn't the iOS version of 999 get any love? I heard it's like a novel version of 999.

It's good as a recap, been playing it again in preparation for ZTD, but the lack of puzzles is a pretty big draw. The new sprites, HD backgrounds and flowchart are very welcome additions that I hope come to the Steam/Vita ports, and it does a good job adapting the two-screens stuff for a single screen. If emulating/playing the DS version is really not an option, it's decent enough for a first playthrough, so long as people are aware what they're missing. From Uchi's tweets it seems the Steam/Vita port of 999 will have puzzles though, so the iOS version will become pretty obsolete once those are out.

I'm really happy that this game is getting such great reviews, and that the story and characters are once again the key selling point.

I'm so ready for this.

Perhaps this isn't the place for such a request (if so, I apologize), but I'm playing through ZTD for review and I'm mighty stuck. Anyone who's finished willing to help through PM?

I'd be in the dick
The puzzles are a big part of the game. Even the creator of the series trashed that version a little while back.

My DS died so I had to play the iOS version of 999 and I still loved it. There is that one scene that does lose a lot of impact not playing it but it's worth it to get the story (especially since I got it for 99cents). Bought VLR after finishing it and preordered the watch edition of ZTD. I will rebuy 999 if it gets a Vita release.

If you have another way of playing 999 I would recommend those but if you don't have another option, it works a story primer.

For those of you who have played it, how is the jp va? Cost I always play with the original cast and would like to know if it's good.

"Original Cast" is sort of a weird concept for Zero Escape.

999 wasn't voice acted.
VLR was voiced in English and Japanese for the first time at the same time.
ZTD wouldn't exist at all if it wasn't for the unexpected Western support for the series.

There's an argument that the English voices are the "original" voices.

Sure, but VLR did release several months earlier in Japan than in America, so the Japanese cast was definitely the one that came first in that case. As for ZTD, sure the localization happened while the game was being developed, but I doubt Uchi gave directions to the English cast, but he definitely did to the Japanese one. And by "original" he might mean voice actors who were in VLR, and only Phi's voice returns for the English dub in ZTD, Diana's voice is the same as Luna's in Japanese, but it's someone new in English. Same goes for Sigma.

ugh im mad at myself. I'm in the middle of VLR and hovered over a gif(not here but somewhere else) and found out that
