Sound! Euphonium OVA

Expanded on some stuff and showed different viewpoints on others. Pretty good.

Oh, and there were even some new background locations ;p

91 Days Episode 1

Thus far probably the better entry in the mafia type series around, Reborn was the best one while all the others have always failed to impress. Regardless, I like how this one is but I wish for more background on a few folks, like Nero.

Will stay for ELISA and Angelo. I wonder if thats all ELISA will do for the song though.

Praise the mighty forehead!

So, in some regards this felt like the most pandering thing I've seen in a while, albeit fairly innocent. It's like a guaranteed success with all the cute girls having fun (at times surely while wearing swimsuits), a surplus of funny facial expressions, a relaxing and nice vibe, overall appealing visuals and even a mascot.

Speaking of which, damn it, I really wasn't fond of that stupid mascot in Aria and just when I was thinking "well, I might get to enjoy a show from the director behind Aria without some insufferable, forcibly cute mascot thingy" I was proven wrong. It even makes those cheap human pet voices I'm not very fond of.

It's a pretty show but I'm disliking the overly jolly (read: borderline mentally impaired) character in this first episode and I'm also not sure if this'll offer much beyond fluff. Sure, the super shy girl will grow to love this life and her new friend but it takes a bit to make this common story a bit more engaging.

Gundam featuring Our Lord and Saviour (Gundam Seed)

Ye and our lord Kira Yamato doth proclaim he shal give unto us a pretty good Gundam series.
-Get the bad stuff out of the way first-The last third of the show is great in a lot of ways but there’s just too action and not enough plot or character moments devoted to the last stretch. Some big revelations and character moments are revealed way too abruptly and not given enough time to sink in. I get they want a big climax and it is intense as fuck but I would have appreciated the balance they had before. Lol plus the leaps of logic and some of the bullshit you have to accept in the show’s later stages is a bit tiresome. Plus there’s a bit too much “hey war is bad isn’t it” talk for my liking, like I expect it in a gundam show but don’t just repeat the exact same points over and over, though I guess it does serve as a counterbalance to the otherwise completely cynical and brutal nature of SEED.
-Other than that I thought this show was excellent. Animation and art holds up really well, save for some character designs that look a bit iffy(lol Kira looks like a completely different character in some scenes.) Story and characters always had me invested and dying to see the next episode every time. It’s a Gundam show that obviously I think tries to emulate and evoke similar feelings and plot points of the original 0079 with some modern updates and yeah it worked for the most part.
-Kira-I liked him honestly. He’s a good protagonist. It’s just a shame that after his
“resurrection”
most of his most interesting traits pretty much vanish. Early in the series it was great to watch his conflicted nature, split allegiance between the Naturals and Coordinators and struggles over the position he finds himself in. Later he just become impossibly perfect at everything and seemingly gains full foresight and wisdom from nowhere really. Meh whatever, if you’re gonna yap about Gundam protagonist being OP you’re probably watching the wrong franchise.
-Kira vs Athrun was one of the most intense fights ive ever seen.
-Everyone else. I love Mu La Flaga. A lot. He might be my new favourite Gundam character. The core group of him, Natarle and Ramius were great. OMG I salivate at the thought of Mu being the protagonist. Most of the extended crew and pilots were interesting in their own way. It speaks volumes that I was invested and cared for even the lowest members of the crew like Sai or Milly. And Athrun and Cagalii are OTP. Oh yeah Cagali’s awesome but fuck man there’s a period of the show where she does nothing but cry, let her do some more cool shit you hacks. Really happy when she finally got the Strike Rouge in the end.

Weird shit I thought or genuine questions-
-How the fuck do they concoct a sequel out of this? Who’s even left to fight?
-Its weird that the fact that a bigger deal isn’t made out of the fact that Le Cruescent and La Flaga are
Newtypes.(Or whatever the Newtype equivalent is in SEED).
-How does Cagalli use the
Berserker state in the end? Isn’t that just for Coordinators.”
-Lol of all the couples Kira and Lacus are simply the worst. Maybe it’s because every OP tires to convey them as some kind of star-crossed, destined to be lovers but you’re never shown why or how exactly they grew to like each other, never mind love one another. They just do cause they’re both nice people I guess. Im convinced they nearly forgot Lacus was a character so they just rush in the last ten episodes to find something for her to do to make her relevant to the plot again
“eh she’s the commander of her own spaceship now…shut up don’t question it?
”
-Fuck Jesus Yamato. No mentions the even more bullshit
resurrection of the Desert Tiger.
-Total slap count-3. FFS guys step your game up. Dead father count-
All of them!
-LOL Ramius character seems to have been designed for “gainaxing”. Every time the ship remotely shakes, that chest is sent flying in every direction. On top of that I wonder if someone at Sunrise had a fetish for shower scenes.
-The fucking third OP basically spoils the fact that
Nicol is gonna die.
-Ton and tons of flashbacks. But they’re generally used appropriately and with some context so you wouldn’t notice it unless you’re really looking out for it. But fuck there’s a lot of them.
-Raider, Calamity and Forbidden are pretty cool designs…shame they’re wasted on the three biggest goobers in the show.
Best mech-Blitz or OG Strike. Worst-Strike Rouge(do you get it guys its pink because girls.)

Final Verdict-Donor Kebab with Chilli and Yogurt sauce/10.

Bishounen Gundam (Gundam 00)

-Well I thought it was a bit bollocks honestly. As just an action show, its’ competent at times. But as everything else it was poor to middling at best.
-Straight up biggest problem is the characters. You essentially have three guys who have the same personality of moppy, brooding asshole. Lockon is the only guy with any distinguishable traits. A part of me thinks whoever wrote them has to be in on some sort of joke. Like there’s no way anyone believed these guys were cool, badass or interesting protagonists in any way. It genuinely feels like a parody at times, like look at how silly Hallelujah’s character is. Terrible, just terrible. They pretty much commit the biggest blunder in these types of shows for me; Trying to replace lack of personality with a cool mech. Doesn’t work imo, I don’t care how flashy a fight you can animate as long as I don’t give a fuck about the characters actually involved.
-And fuck did a 5 year old write this story and character backgrounds. Ill give the show credit in that even it realises how stupid Celestial Being’s plan is. The plot exists just to set up fights, everything else is window dressing. The sudden arrival of
Thrones
was when I just gave up and said fuck trying to make sense of this show because plot advancement at that point just became “what random power-up or dues ex Machina can we pull next?”. The end is lol territory,
why is the show trying to convince me Setsuna and Graham are some kind of destined rivals when they’ve barely interacted with each other? And Corner’s master plan, im just smh, fuck that fight.
-Don’t be fooled by characters standing around in military or political looking settings. They don’t really develop the plot or have any interesting storylines of their own any except for “how are we gonna job to Celestial Being next?”. Ali is the one bright spot since he’s basically Gauron from FMP(the greatest mech antagonist of all time.) Well I guess the antagonists were pretty cool in general, like Graham and Sergei, even if they didn’t have a lot to do.
-Interestingly the recent Gundam IBO is the perfect show to compare this to. Gundam IBO is a very simplistically written action show that knows it’s own limitations and stays within them, it has its own problems sure but overall it’s a very enjoyable action romp. 00 on the other hand is a very simplistically written action show that stupidly tries to convey an illusion of depth or a greater plot when there’s nothing of value there.
-Character designs-I find them really tacky. Especially some of the female characters look like they walked straight out of Ikkitousen or something. Mech designs in general are alright with a few really great ones.
-WTF was the point of Saji? It wasn’t to show the effects on civilians or at least I hope that wasn’t the intent. Id say 90% of his and Louise scenes (and his sister’s too) are just straight up filler. There’s fuck all need for these characters to exist in any way shape or form. I don’t care if they become relevant in the sequel, to have characters that contribute so little get so much screen time is a sin. Lol Im still laughing at how hard the show fucked Saji over for no clear reason though.
-Fuck can you make it any more obvious that
Ribbons
is the bad guy? Maybe add 500 more sinister smiles so I can get the point?
-Lol even with a gun to my head I don’t think id ever watch the sequel.
-Anyways: Hottest guy-
Punished
Lockon Stratos. Number of slaps-Only 1!
-Best Mech-Custom Flag. Worst-Whatever that gold monstrosity was called.

-Final verdict-Can I have some that alcohol Sumeragi/10.

And er the decidedly not-Gundam Martian Successor Nadesico

-Ill sum up one episode of Nadesico to see if anyone finds it interesting. So the Jovian Lizards use their giant spider mechas to control WW2-era tanks in order to fight the main cast who travel to the battlefield via an orienteering/camping trip whilst singing a jaunty tune. Yep that’s the level of sanity to expect.
-I fucking adored this show. You somewhat need to be at least familiar with a few mecha/ space drama shows to get the most out of it, like Gundam, Yamato and Macross etc. It also takes a few episodes to get adjusted to the weird ass tone of the series as you can never know when it will subvert tropes or reinforce them. There’s also a lot of tonal whiplash that can come from absolutely no where. It can be hard to take the show seriously when it wants you to (because it’s 90% zany bullshit) but it actually proves offer some very poignant moments.
-If you like the humour of the Full Metal Panic franchise I think you’d enjoy this a lot. Things that are completely absurd are played straight by a lot of the Nadesico crew and no spoilers but some of the situations they get into are amazingly ridiculous.
-I love that it sort of sits between a Real Robot show and a Super Robot one. For example, everyone will be having a standard Gundam type fight with tactics and sci-fi mumbo jumbo, then Akito will just jump in from off screen and use a super robot punch and explode half the screen. Best gag of the series is Akito prepares for a Gundam style launch sequence and then fucking jogs down the launch pad instead.
-The whole crew of the Nadeisco are an amazing collection of oddballs. The best thing I found about them aside from being all hilarious is that they all have a little more depth than you would imagine. Everyone gets a little moment or two of reflection or growth to remind you that they are real rational people, despite not acting like it most of the time.
-There are some holy shit level twists. Like Samurai Flamenco levels of “wtf? This is awesome”. And there’s a certain change in direction that accommodates certain characters that’s a real joy if you’re savvy to what it’s emulating.
-The use of the in-show Gekiganger 3 is brilliant. It’s a good mix of very obvious parody but also some subtly as well. It also provides the greatest re-cap episode ever.
-Akito’s harem is the stupidest thing ever. I loved it.
-Best mech-Gekiganger 3.
-The sequel movie’s synopsis…dosen’t sound promising. Do they go in a different direction or something? It sounds way too serious.

-Final Verdict-YOU GET TO BURNING/10

Note to myself, never let Kotomi have a chance to play her violin as it will hurt the people who listen to her music. Overall, a fun episode as you got to know a bit more of Kotomi personality. Still not liking the idea of her to play her violin to other people to listen which proof my point when she did play it, literally hurting a lot of people in the process.

The interaction with Kotomi and Tomoya is interesting to watch. Even when Tomoya manage to found her in the school on the weekend (from hearing her bad music pratice). Found out few more things of her and somehow knowledge of doing some baking. Also, they might be some crush feeling Kotomi have with Tomoya but can't say much as I don't know if you can say it's crush or just respect him of making her to able to talk to people when she can't do it in the past. Also, that weird dream which Tomoya have. Look like someone have too much drug....

The final scene where Kotomi try to get away from this man with a coat. Look like this old man is someone who might be bad toward Kotomi and she want to get away from the look of it. I am guessing it isn't really a bad guy but maybe her close relatives (maybe dad?). Overall, a fun episode to watch and will like to see where this Kotomi arch will go as we now know they is something Kotomi didn't tell to her friend yet.

Ep1 up too. get hype

Amanchu! 01

I think, at this point, it's safe to conclude that the Amano/SatoJun sensibility just leaves me cold. I found this less numbing than Aria, but then Hikari is so drenched in joie de vivre that it provokes a response, one way or another; the kind of personality that feels like it's trying to cajole you into appreciating life down to the individual tiles in the floor. I'm afraid I've never been one to arrive at the destination of cheer by being exposed to a nuclear version of it, at least in the confines of art. Fivehead teacher's brief display of insecurity following her "cool" speech was probably the most interesting moment for me. A shame, because J.C. Staff are doing a better production job than Aria had and I did get on with all those long hair fetish shots :p

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru Ep 1 (or Konobi for short)

I knew that the voice sounded familiar and lo and behold it's Ari Ozawa (KanColle's Prinz Eugen/Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun's Sakura Chiyo) giving us more cuteness as another member of the art club. Her fellow members of the club are all malfunctional. One strives to draw the perfect 2D waifu, her club president sleeps in all day. She's probably the only normal member of the club. Had quite a bit of hnnnng moments watching the ep.

Humour was kind of on point and delivered pretty well. Promising.

The HBO Remake is coming in two years #1

Was he trying to be racist but that got lost in translation or what?

That was pretty good, I'm not about sure about spending half episode on a backstory, though.

Who picked the characters names, though? Angelo is a legitimate name, but then you get... Luce? SERPENTE? CEROTTO!?

91 Days 1

This delivered pretty much exactly what I hoped it would. I appreciate that, while this presents a violent and dark world, it doesn't rub our nose in it by lingering on gore or having everyone be huge assholes. It throws in just enough light-hearted shades to make the characters interesting, without going overboard. Overall the execution is pleasantly subdued for this kind of story. That makes it easier to soak in the atmosphere. The credit sequence in the middle of the episode really made this feel like the opening act of a film.

Hopefully the OP sequence, which I assume we'll get next week, will have good visuals to go along with the good song.

Alderamin on the Sky 01

I feel like we're getting the characters backstories here and establishing their places in the group rather than the actual story of the show. Not that I think that's a bad thing. I enjoyed this a lot.

91 Days 01

I am a massive sucker for Prohibition era mob stories, I ate this up with a fucking spoon.

Well now, well now, well now, this one took me off guard in that not only do I not hate it but I am rather shocked at how good the first episode was. Yes, I shall see how this develops in the near future.

Thunderbolt Fantasy 01 - Good stuff. The lead characters are cool and the action is great. Sawano's music may be a bit overblown, particularly if you already don't like him.

EDIT: Also
the villain of the episode decapitating himself so his boss could use his severed head to retrieve his final memories was cool as hell
.

The Nadesico movie is garbage. Watch the Gekiganger 3 OVA and pretend that the scene at the very end is the last scene of the franchise.

Everything I wanted it to be. Sawano's perfect for this shit too and that comes from someone usually annoyed by his work. :lol I hope people give this a chance!

This is the kind of show Gangsta wishes it could have been and then some. Yes indeed a rather stunning highlight to this season to say the least.

I want to like it but the characters feel so stiff compared to Baccano. It's still really good relative to the average show this season but man I can't shake those Baccano feels.

While I get the temptation to compare 91 Days to Baccano, it seems like they're aiming for pretty different things tonally.

Baccano is a lot more fantastical and it is over the top in its presentation, so I don't think they are similar products at all even if gangsters are involved.

Baccano is a lot more over the top and goofy. 91 Days takes a more serious and low-key approach. No problem with preferring one over the other, but I don't think 91 Days is trying to be Baccano 2.

Nu Berserk 02

Well, that certainly is less bad than the first episode, though it just moves my focus on other issues that were already there, but were overshadowed by the worse shit in the first episode. The music for the Chain Knights VS Guts confrontation is still messy, but not to the extent of the first episode. The animation quality is still just plain bad and anyone trying to favorably compare this to the 90s anime is either blind or stupid. The mouth animations when various characters are talking are especially jarring, as I found myself staring at the wonky animations at the expense of everything else pretty much every time anyone was talking. Casca continues being unnaturally pale for no reason.

This would be something like 4/10 compared to the 2/10 of the first episode, maybe 5/10? I guess I will keep watching for now. God(hand) knows I want to see the Berserkers armor in animated form, janky CG or no.

I really can't.

Perhaps. I'm not asking them to be flamboyant like Isaac and Miria but there's just scenes where the characters should have a little more life. Take a look at 16:38, 18:54 and 20:32.

16:38 - Dude just got beat the fuck up, but he sits there and stares. He doesn't even look frightened or in pain.
18:54 - Setting aside how dumb it is to shoot a rifle over your shoulder like that, when Fango challenges the bartender, the bartender goes "no", dumbly, again, no reaction, no fear, no apprehension, no resolve.
20:34 - Fango is firing randomly, his arms jerking around but his body is oddly immobile

It's so stiff! I feel like anime is often guilty of overacting but this is blatant underacting.

I feel like people who want this to be Baccano are in for disappointment. Baccano was a crazy over the top show with people with super-powers and scenes like "Thank you! Fuck you! A villain! Has arrived!" or the bomb-orgasm.

This looks more like The Count of Monte Cristo 1920 version.

Edit: Ninja'd by like 3 people lol.
