Thanks for the thread OP. I personally don't use it even though I'm mixed (Afro-Caribbean) because I'm really light skinned, but my sister uses it fairly regularly.

Agreed on the sentiment, but yo, fuck this gif. Cuts from a sideways high-five to an overhand high-five. Bad edits get so clear in gif form. Also, is that Janeway!?

Yeah, she's been on all four seasons.

Her best work was still in NTSF:SD:SUV::

I grew up as a white boy in a mixed race family. My step dad, little sister, and little brother are all black/mixed

I can't think of a single instance where it would be okay or appropriate for me to call any of them my nigga or anything like that.

I also can't match with these other white people saying "It's hard not to say it within X context"

No it's not. It's incredibly easy to never say it at all.

I use profanity more than anyone else I've ever met. I regularly start non aggressive sentences with "look mother fucker"
When I'm around the executives at work or having casual grocery conversation I'm not calling everyone a mother fucker because words are not that God damn hard

Alot of the social norms are really dumb, like small talk for example.

Cool. Not sure what that has to do with anything. Don't follow any societal norms you think are dumb. See where it gets you. I'm not here to argue with you about thinking not being able to say nigga is a dumb societal norm. You're your own person. Say it if you are that confident.

how do you guys feel about Method Man making a crowd of 200 white people yell out "shame on a nigga" over and over again?

happened a few years ago at a Wu show in Helsinki, back then i thought it was fucking funny, Method Man himself was cracking up so badly he fell to the floor laughing pretty much. i didn't participate though, iirc i was just looking around baffled heh.

Over the years I've grown incredibly tired of a lot of black celebrities and their push to be mainstream and not ruffle any feathers...this doesn't seem like that though, I think Meth legit thought that was funny that he got everyone to do that...sheeple. I don't follow Wu so I dunno.

I wonder if he'd do that today though...

what if you're brown?

Yeah. And what if you're not American but love American music? I have a list of entire countries with youth who say it with zeal and respect.

What if your whole urban area uses it endearingly? What if the whitest kid grew up in Jackson, MI and was influenced by their surroundings? Is he going to get yelled at by a passing tourist?

In fact, as the years go by, mixed children will the dominating demographic. How much of a percentage are we talking about here in order for club membership?

I think there's too many things in the world to take offense at. Choose what you want to be cerebral about. If you're smart enough to accept some people will say it without ill will, and if it's spoken in an appropriate environment, then you're smart enough to not escalate the situation.

This can't be real.

Do you have any idea how it feels to have rocks thrown at you and be called a nigger/nigga in the process? Do you have any idea how it feels to get lynched by your own in the streets and the last word they heard was die nigger/nigga. Do you have any idea how it feels to have a white girlfriend and her father calls you a nigger/nigga because you are in love? Do you have any idea how it feels to get pulled out of a police car, your car gets searched and the cop tells you to sit the fuck down nigger/nigga. Do you know how it feels to be in your mostly white neighborhood, you are in love with your girlfriend and your neighbor calls the cops because you are out playing and laughing, they tell you to get your nigger/nigga hands off of her.

This my friend is real. Don't tell me what's real. I will NEVER embrace the word.

Foul word regardless of the pronunciation or the race the person comes from who says it. The meaning of the word is never diminished regardless of a desire to reclaim it and will always be loaded.
Da fuck. You don't have the authority to dictate its meaning or intent when used by black people. You don't even bother to recognize that you're discussing essentially two terms.

Does Eminem, a star rapper that hangs out with a wide group of black rappers ever use the word nigga? Do you, neogaf poster, have more street cred and "Cool White GuyTM" traits then Slim Shady? If not, why do you want to use it so badly?

Yes to these. My lived experience as a Nigerian who moved to the UK, and then to Canada. Don't proceed to tell me what's real either.

I also understand the gravitas of the word, and how we reclaimed it. So here we are.

Im sure he talked about it before and doesnt. That guy wont let his daughter even look at the art in his albums.

Yes to each point? Come on now.

I told you what was real because you questioned me. Reclaiming a negative and hurtful word is straight up idiotic IMO. I can say it but you can't? Lol...that's makes me laugh more when we say that.

I think you're expanding the concept of the thread into more horizons,
We went over this in the last thread. No.
in the last thread, nobody except TalonJH was actually trying to listen to what I was conveying.

Lol @ oppressors not being able to comprehend why they can't say a word like this. I always have and always will consider that trolling. No way you can be that obtuse.

Yes. I mean, what do you want me to do, bring up photos and eye witness testimonies?

And its cool you don't believe in reclaiming the word. Many of us do. We can agree to disagree on that point. Don't try and diminish the viewpoint of those that do feel that we can reclaim the word because you feel you hold the ace card on racist interactions with non black people who directed the word at you.

Zappa provokes bowel movements, not thoughts

Unless the thought was "wow this guys sucks lol"

I mean, he's a highly regarded 20th century composer and his body of work is as daunting as it is demanding, but there's plenty of scatological humour in there to enjoy too.

He'd very much appreciate a loud, lingering jazz fart.

Nigga wasn't reclaimed for minorities. Nigga was reclaimed by black people for black people. Ao if you aren't black what makes you think you're cool to say it?
The OP covers its history of usage, and only addresses why white people shouldn't use it.

So going by the OP's narrative, there's black people and white people, but if you're not black, then why do you automatically fall under white?

Cause just because you aren't white, doesn't mean that whatever you are have a delightful history with black people.

What's with calling random people whose race you don't know on the Internet "oppressors"?

Coons be giving them passes. I'm not co with Rican friends anymore for this exact reason.

You're not friends with Puerto Ricans in general anymore because other black people let their Puerto Rican friends say "nigga?"

What doesthe opening have to do with what I said? Nigga was not reclaimed so minorities could use it. It was reclaimed by black for black people as a means of empowerment. If you are not black what do you think that word has to do with you? The answer is nothing. So don't use it.

Never ever gonna say those words. I was raised that those words were very disrespectful. I hear people say it all the time but I just will not say them.

At least you understand the context. Lot of people feign ignorance.

If you're not black, don't say it. Better?
Would you say it to some random black person that you don't know?

People think we do shit just to be cool and not because there is some kind of meaning behind it. Nobody respects our culture despite the nonstop dick riding, monkey see/monkey do ish.
It's heavily implied when you say "lol @" and then make a reference to trolling. People typically do that in threads to passive aggressively target posters indirectly. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, sorry.
You good.

People think we do shit just to be cool and not because there is some kind of meaning behind it. Nobody respects our culture despite the nonstop dick riding, monkey see/monkey do ish.

That's the confusion though. Our culture was always mainstream. It has always been sold on front street, from the fucked up black person zoos in the past, to the mainstream hip-hop, fashion, and entertainment you see today in America.

What about online? There is no 100% way to know what the person saying the word looks like

Hence the OP, All he can do is educate. That's something you can't control by that point

Are my Sudanese friends allowed to use it? What about Malawians? There's also a half-caste Zimbabwean girl I work with. Is she too white?
