What's the best way to clean contacts on carts and cart-based systems? Been playing my Genny, but some of these carts are pretty filthy and I wanted to clean them up a bit.

If you have a security bit screw driver that you can open the cart up with then an eraser. Otherwise Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol works okay.

Use a credit card and thin rag with alcohol on the system contacts. Also give it a good blast with a compressor before hand.

I have a few windows up in the 'ol games room, I just have the blinds down at all times and I put some UV protection on them just to be sure. Back in my old bedroom I used to have my dvd's in a shelf where the sunlight would shine all day (not even directly). All those DVD's are just completely drained of color...it hurts to even look at them. I couldn't stomach that happening to my games. I mean dvd's are kinda worthless, but my games...don't fuck with my games is what I'm saying. I don't care if you're the sun, I'm coming for you.

Hell no, cool shit needs its place in the limelight. I've never understood the whole minimalism thing. Some people would be happiest in a white room with nothing but a chair and a VR headset I bet. Not me man, I sit proud amongst my stuff. But to each his own.
For me, minimalism comes from living in NYC. You really need to maximize every ounce of space here considering how much real estate costs.

If you only have one room to your name, it's going to say volumes if it's dominated by videogame merchandise.

I love games and I show off my collection to every guest. But I don't want a videogame-themed apartment. If I had more space, I'd totally have a room dedicated to games where every corner is crammed with cool shit on display.

By the way, how do people in this thread feel about Majora's Mask? It's taking me forever to make progress in this game (I probably pick up my save file once every 2 weeks for an hour or two). In my opinion, there is a lot to love here, but it feels like the 3 day mechanic gives the game a really unsettling game-flow (which was probably intended).

If I'm being completely honest, I really dig the game despite the time flow mechanics, rather than thinking that the time flow mechanics add much to the experience other than inconvenience. Plus, it's kind of annoying to complete a side quest and see the effect of that quest on the game world or characters, only for it to disappear at the end of the 3 days with only a mask to show for it. The characters have no idea who you are all over again. The whole affair makes playing as Link feel far more anonymous than it does in other Zelda games - which isn't something I enjoy.

It makes it hard to feel like you are getting to know any of the NPC's - which is a comprises a lot of the charm in other Zelda games and Nintendo games in general. In some ways, it's a more isolating experience than even Metroid games because those games don't have NPC's to remind you that you're a non-entity that lives outside the physical rules of the game world.

So what is the best way to store and/or display old magazines? I have most of the first 50 issues of Nintendo Power now. I want to put them in typical upright magazine folios, but I'm also considering putting each one in plastic with a poster board backing. But then, that might be a bit much. Any thoughts or experience with this?

I've been investigating this same curiosity the last couple months (as I'm trying to get my game room perfected) and I found that 8.5 x 11 picture frames deal with a lot of game magazines from the late 90's/early 200's very nicely.

Examples from what I did last weekend:
pic_001_magslvsn9.jpg

I've looked at magazine holders like these, but they seem really expensive considering I'd want to buy 8-10 of them.

I've attempted thrift shopping and Wal Mart shopping but I haven't had any luck with any economical solutions as far as magazine holders go. I really do want them to be fron-facing though!

Let me know what you come up with! I'll certainly share any other ideas I have if I come across something.

Did you learn the song that slows time? With that, i never really had an issue with the time limit. Absolute love the game btw.

Yes I know the reverse song of time and I use it every cycle. The time limit isn't my issue with the game. It's the resetting of the game world itself that I find difficult to enjoy as much as other entries in the series.

Looks nice! But I'm hoping to keep them accessible. I want to pull down any issue at any time so I can use the maps, cheats, or just check out what NP had to say about the game at the time.

While Blue Storm looks better and has more content (of course), I just wish the soundtrack was done by the N64 composer. Both are still fun games though. Sucks that the only "wave race" we've received after that was Wii Sports Resort jet ski event.

A 60 FPS 3DS Wave Race game with decent depth illusion and online MP would've been great.

digital press?

looks nice!

Yeah it's nice and clean. Yeah I went in there today to trade some stuff in and saw they had one. I was never going to find one as cheap as the price was minus store credit so I jumped on it. Been wanting one for a long while now.

While people have already commented on Wave Race I'll mention Shinobi is sooooo fucking good. It gets brutally hard from what I remember but its a damn good game.

Agreed. I loved Shinobi a great deal - it isnt a pushover but once you get the chaining/combo mechanics down you feel like a real badass. I really need to replay the game again sometime just to see if I can finally get all the coins to unlock Joe.

I spent most of yesterday playing the arcade version of Strider. Time well spent, the final area has a pretty brutal difficulty hike but the rest of the game is wonderful. Now to go through the ports and see just how bad/disappointing the PC Engine version really is.

PS3 isn't retro enough to have its own thread yet and not a ps2 question...so I'll ask here:

Okami HD physical disk on ps3, is that JPN/Asia only? Was there a NA or EU release or was that digital only? I am mostly seeing JPN versions of physical disks on ebay/amazon.

Digital only in the US and Europe. Fun fact: The Japanese physical release is entirely in English, if you have your system set to English. It also has the Reset ending theme, which was stripped from the US/EU release, but only if your language is set to Japanese.

Yesterday, I managed to grab my first ever 101 GBA SP. It was behind the counter at a goodwill. They had no charger for it and couldn't turn it on and see if it worked. That's why they priced it at $10. Plus, it has a lot of wear and tear on the outside. I charged it a bit at home and it works fine. The screen is in good shape, but the battery looks a bit bloated. I'm gonna have to change the battery soon. Not sure what I'll really do with it. I'm not a big handheld enthusiast, but I don't think it's worth selling in such rough shape.

It feels like a very personal game; the sidequests are what make the game, the dungeons are good, but not really the selling point. It's got a very weird and surreal feel to it all, which is something I adore in general. It's a very unsettloing and melancholic game. It's so different from the rest of the series I can see people being put off by it, but for me, especially in context of the rest of the series, it'sa top 3 Zelda for me.

I've actually been thinking about Breath of the Wild. There's no way that game is gonna be a one-off, there's too much work being put into the engine and all that for Nintendo to just drop it after BotW. I'm hoping we'll see another MM-type situation where in a few years we'll get another mainline Zelda with assets from BotW but with a completely different spin.

You can re-case it and replace the battery for around $15 plus labor. Then it will be worth $100!

The screen alone is worth $60-70.

I have a feeling we will se a lot of open-world games on the Switch based on this engine, and a few of them might borrow some assets from BotW. Definitely makes sense to make another Zelda with the same assets like MM too.

Would be down for a new xenoblade in this engine for sure

Has anyone any experience in disassembling a PS2 dualshock? My spare controller doesn't work anymore and I can only suspect why, since I haven't been using it a lot for years. On of the metal pins in the plug/connector (or how you wanna call it) seems to be pushed in. Some button inputs don't get recognized as a result, mostly directions. I wanted to try fixing it myself, since it doesn't look like a big deal. I just need to find a way to open it.

This is the only video I found. It looks kind of violent, so maybe knows a more gentle way without fucking up the plastic.

It's all screws so it's pretty easy. Just be gentle with the rumble wires.

Personally, I'm hoping for a Switch port of the first Xenoblade. That game should not be officially relegated to SD hardware and it would be amazing to carry an HD version of that game around with you when traveling.

All I know is that it's a mess to reassemble. Everything is tightly packed together, and it's not like a console where you put back layer after layer: you need to hold the triggers and put everything back with a 3D perspective.

I opened one because I was curious, and I never tried again.

David, you're gonna love the Bouncer. Someone made a comparison recently of Ryse on the Xbox One to the Bouncer as a launch window title that is style-over-substance, and I have to admit, that's a pretty apt comparison.

The game is a blast while it lasts though. Plus, the main character's wardrobe is basically just Sora before Sora existed.

been so busy, but glad alot of plp are positive about wave race and the bouncer =)

definitely can't go wrong with $7 and $10 dollars!
going to prob grab dinner soon and check out a few more titles.

I meant this part of the controller with no screws, guess I worded it weirdly. In the second pic you should be able to see the missing pin. But on the plug are no screws, seems like violence is the only option?! And it doesn't seem to be a common problem, there are only very few results on google.

I don't know the original question but a lot of PS controllers are missing that pin and are totally fine. At least my Sega Saturn PS2 pad is missing a pin like that and works great.

Awesome, thanks! Purchased the Japanese version! I never played it back in the ps2 days so looking forward to it!

Weird, i got it way back in a bundle with the PS2 + 2 official pads + memory card. The functioning controller has all the pins intact. The one on the picture (missing pin) has some issues, not all directional buttons are working. I thought it was because of the missing pin. Anyone with a dualshock2 at hand that has a pin missing in the same place?

edit here's a pic of the working one

I use an X-acto knife with a chisel blade to open that kind of thing. Just hold it in a vice or clamps, place the blade on the seam, and carefully wack the butt of the xacto.

Sometimes they're just held in with glue and a hair drier works.

Aside from that, I'd just recommend buying a new controller. Seems like new-in-box for like $30ish is still doable on eBay, and let me tell you there is nothing like buying a fresh, brand new PS2 controller these days. It's like magic.

Speaking of new old controllers, how are the smash gc controllers compared to original gc controllers? Been thinking of picking one up since mine are getting a little worn out.

Good but not the quite the same.

How so? I can't discern any difference and I play a ton of Smash.

P.S. Does anyone else realize that other than the N64 and the Virtual Boy, Nintendo has re-released all of their pre-Wii controllers in the post Wii era. Specifically, in the last 10 years we've gotten new:

NES pads that connect to the Wii remote (with the NES Mini)
SFC pads that connect to the Wii remote (with Japanese Club Nintendo)
And GCN controllers (for Super Smash Bros for Wii U).

What would it take for them to do a new N64 controller release? That's the re-release that we need most.

And does anyone here have any plans to pick up an NES Mini? I'm probably passing on it.

They clearly have a line planned, since it's called Nintendo Classic Mini: NES.

Nintendo Classic Mini: N64 - coming holiday 2018.

I have the Famicom shipping on the 10th, and will grab the NES as well because I have issues.

.

The finish is different and the triggers are missing the metal rod.

I got the Smash GC controller and it's great. Unless you play Melee to the point of getting athritis, you won't care (or notice) the difference.
