NPD Sales Results For October 2016

TC is Gears studio, they are not going to do a new IP. Just like neither 343 nor Turn 10 will do a new IP in the foreseeable future.
As I said above, the best they could hope for with gears 5 would be similar or slightly better sales. There's not going to be a resurgence of growth with the series. If they pull back the budget than selling between 2-3 mill would be fine.

Halo probably caught MS off guard with its steep drop but I doubt Gears did. I never really got the feeling that MS was positioning it as a major title the way older Gears were. Seemed very dedicated to the core base.

See i don't think ms was caught off guard, even by halo. They know they lost console customers to Sony. They know they lost customers with h4's reception, they know they lost customers with MCC. I think they went into H5 with hopes to rebuild. Same as with Gears4.

I see a lot of people say MS expected h5 to do h3 numbers, simply because reach and 4 did close to h3 launch numbers. But if you look at those numbers closely, you already start to see a decline- one that mcc and 4 did nothing to reverse.

Indeed, I think Halo blind sided them, but I doubt Gears 4 did. If we include digital and the bundle sales its about in line with the last game Judgement. Its not a huge success by any means, but it shouldn't have much issue making its money back.

I agree its basically MS throwing a bone to the core fanbase I think more than something they expected to be a monster hit.

But should be a monster hit, look at Gears 3 sales.

I dont think its that bad for Gears really. Could have been alot worse with a new studio, characters, Xbox One not leading like the 360 days, and different market shooter wise.

I don't think I saw a single person anywhere thinking Gears 4 would be anywhere near Gears 3 sales. There is no chance in hell MS did. The franchise is older, has stagnated for a while, etc. I mean it was clear from the get go hype was no where near franchise highs.

Right, MS wants some sort of stability. The IP they have may not perform all that well but they are properties that are already established and can be leveraged to an extent. Trying to make a big, new IP would be dangerous.

I really don't think MS expect Halo numbers to have such a huge drop .
For gears they had Judgement numbers so it can't be a shock .
Halo on the other hand had over a 50% drop at retail if i remember right .

At this rate they won't be able to match Sony IP WW any more.

That was 2 games and 5 years ago. Judgement was down and the remaster didn't come out of the gates firing in all cylinders. So I assume they would expect lower numbers

Judgment hasn't the scale of the three first games.

The drop is huge, I suppose that was expected since the same happened with Halo, but remains being disappointing.

I think last gen Gears and Halo numbers are a pipe dream in today's market and in the immediate future. Those numbers represented mass market appeal, where the majority of 18-35 year old males are buying the game. Clearly is not the case with X1. Heck even Sony has trouble replicating those numbers in the US or UK.

It's not terrible for Geara but it is showing declining interests in the games. It's also showing that ms is struggling a bit with first party. They are doubling down on the tent poles though. So it'll be interesting to see what Halo does next year.

This is why it's wise to invest in new IP. Especially early on the life of the console. You look at Bloodborne Horizon, days gone, Detroit. All those games will no doubt get a huge marketing push.

Even games like TLG. That won't do huge numbers but it's always good to have your first party studios putting out games like that.

Looks like the US is mirroring the U.K. Sales of these big titles failing are exactly as exited. Poor for Gears. Horrendous for TF2.

Not looking forward to seeing the drops for CoD and Watch Dogs there.

Result is terrible, let's be honest here.
From multimillion series to not being able to go past 500K at retail standalone....
The fact that there are obviously reasons behind the result (franchise fatigue, more variety and new IPs on the market, etc) doesn't change the fact that it's a really poor outcome.
Don't know how a lot worse could have been? 100-200k? JRPG territory? :p

I just don't see anything leading up to halo5's launch that would have convinced them it would be nearly as successful as halos most successful launch.

It didn't have the installed base of H4. Didn't have the allure of Bungie's swan song in reach. It didn't have the hype or marketing of h3.

On the flip side, it was coming on the heels of two 343 games that massively disappointed fans, at a time when Xbox was bleeding former customers (including previous halo players) to Sony. Not to mention, numerous high profile titles had been seeming declines.

If they have 1 market analyst on the payroll, they expected a drop. Probably why MTs are so ingrained tbh.

If they want halo to do numbers, it needs a formula shake up that captures what the kids are into these days... probably a shared-world game. The sandbox is actually perfect for it.

I think there's a difference between expecting a drop and the drop they got. I'm sure MS realized that the IP would not be as strong as it was.

But to go from ~3.3 mil to 900k is eye opening in a lot of ways for Halo.

I wonder if gears' sales will make MS rethink their franchise's studio strategy (actually I hope it does).

And do what exactly? Where are the amazingly successful new first party IPs this gen?

1. Splatoon

2. Bloodborne
3. No Man Sky ???

Horizon - no one really knows. Although I think/hope it will be a huge success.

EDIT: Here's my prediction for next month. Skyrim 400K in October will be higher than FFXV.

Well the road to November NPD just got that much more interesting. Can the Pro make up the difference against a Black Friday Xbone? Fun times ahead.

I'm not shocked at that result. XBO had lots of bundles right? Gears,BF1. That no doubt pushed sales.

November will be close I think.

But the decline was already in place. Aligned for installed bases the launch is essentially where you'd expect it to be...if you had any sense.

I think their eyes were opened by h4s lack of legs, and the failure of MCC... that's why Warzone exists.
