Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
I feel like it could've been more lean. Cut a 10 minute chunk out. And one
holding character dying in arms
scene too many.

But no major complaints. It's a competent, well done, entertaining flick.

There were two of those. Dont see how thats too many.

I mean, this movie has its references but the entirety of it is supposed to lead into iv. What's going to be the judgement call is how episode 8 and 9 harp on the past.

Maybe once the rebels series wraps up and we finally get into episode 8 territory we can start to tell new stories again, but I feel like VIII will totally follow ESB, if they can't help them selves to market every new star wars movie as 'this generation's ESB' I doubt they will pass up the chance to actually do it for VIII.

movie sounds like its gonna be great, can't wait to see it!

but....

I was glancing at the reviews on RT, one review nailed my fears for star wars movies going forward (or backwards..)

http://www.mtv.com/news/2964153/a-star-wars-story-youve-seen-before/

and the review goes on to say (spoilery)
The audience whooped. Who wouldn't be thrilled to see our old frenemy back in action? Meanwhile, the CGI-recreated Grand Moff Tarkin (original actor Peter Cushing died in 1994) looks adorable with his new rosy dusting of blush. Yet, as Darth Vader’s death march continues and the good guys' corpses pile up, I felt as though the entire franchise had shut off its gravity. In 40 years, we've come full circle to the beginning, but everything is upside-down. Now we're cheering for the fascists? What planet are we on?

what do you guys think? are we on a looping circle of callbacks, or do you think well eventually see star wars movies tell new stories again, and finally break free of having to replicate the OT?
The problem with The Phantom Menace was it had to introduce Star Wars to a new generation in a proper way while pleasing existing fans. It did neither.

They played it super safe with The Force Awakens for that reason. Now that the new generation has been properly introduce, they can get down to business.

I'm not so sure about that...

6 season of clone wars (and rebels is almost a PT show) and people clamoring for that era to be returned to Battlefront have me thinking otherwise, I'm almost certain VIII will be beat for beat ESB, hopefully they prove people like me wrong.

Not really. People are clamoring for a return to that era for Battlefront because that game was bare bones compared to previous Battlefront entries. Entries which already had PT components in them several years ago.

I'll tell you what. If Finn gets frozen in carbonite, I'll worry about VIII. For now, I don't see how anyone could be certain about it.

Honestly Rogue One made me wish we could get more Empire versus Rebel Movies.

Would love to see more fleshed out Space battles etc. of course the fact Episode 7 had its Major fleet battle removed because of the people in charge afraid people could not comprehend if there were more than just Xwing and Tie fighters now I am not sure we will ever get another awesome fleet battle.

"Oh my god there are trees on this planet where she's being trained! Ugh ESB remake."

REY is stirred by a calling from a DARK CAVE -- she eyes it with curiosity and fear.

REY
What is that?

LUKE
Only what you take with you. But bitch I'm telling you to leave your shit before you go in there.

REY
...very well then.

EXPECTATIONS SUBVERTED

Kasdan has described Rian Johnson's script as weird, although it did go through some re-writes.

I don't think we should look into the "weird" comments much. Like I'm sure it'll be a bit different than VII, but I think it'll feel like a Star Wars movie. Rogue One broke several conventions and still felt like Star Wars despite having its own tone and voice. I think Rian's movie will have its own voice but I doubt it's going to be "weird" or anything off the wall.

This is a big problem for me in Rogue One. Instead of focusing on the main characters more to flesh them out they take way too much time out for pointless cameos and callbacks. Hopefully the future movies will avoid this type of unnecessary fan service

Rey, Finn and Poe chase Kylo Ren into a wormhole and end up 40 years in the past. The movie costars a CGI Alec Guinness because his family likes money. Obi Wan does the training because Luke was obviously a pretty subpar teacher.

Seriously, the reviews are undercutting this movie. Just came back, and I don't what critics were expecting. Easily better than Episode 7.

Well I fucking loved it. I'll say I loved Episode 7 more because I love the characters more, but Rogue One is a great film imo. Like I really enjoyed this and will be seeing it again tomorrow.

beginning was a bit slow, because of the world building and introducing characters, but other than that I loved the whole vibe and tone of the movie. Vader is still commands the screen when you see him

Just saw it.

It was good. Maybe I enjoyed it more than Force Awakens.

Couple issues though..

That all CG guy who was thrown in with real actors... Man, this proves it, watching CG movies is like watching cartoons. He's a cartoon character sitting among real actors.
Impressive, but it really felt like a cartoon character rather than a human being.

My favorite character?
Bali Gahany (spelling). I liked it when Forrest Whitaker started talking all crazy and ordered a bizarre tentacle beast to be on screen.

every 10 minutes something happened that led me to say "I love this movie"

alan tudyk was awesome, the models were awesome, loved the story arc, interesting characters. Honestly, I had really high hopes because I enjoyed Godzilla a ton, and I went blackout on this movie after the initial reveal, and I was blown away.

I didnt feel this way during/after Ep7

absolutely fantastic.

Rian Johnson doesn't create for Disney until now. Edgar Wright couldn't make an Ant-Man movie that didn't line up with their vision lol.

Before Bobby beats you over the head, it's Lucasfilm making these movies. And we just saw that they allowed Edwards to run wild with a dark and gloomy war movie that's totally unlike anything else in the franchise. They're going to let Rian do what he wants. That's why they hired him!

Even if this was a "Dinsey" film and not a LucasArts film, how can anyone see all the dark shit they put into Rogue One, and then think 8 will be Disneyfied?

Before I watched Rogue One, I didn't think that the film franchise would ever be allowed to go to places the books, comics, and videogames had. It wasn't just a Disney thing, I just didn't see Lucasfilm as considering the movies something they would want to take a chance with on possibly making the largest possible mainstream audience uncomfortable.

I'm really happy to be wrong, because Rogue One is the movie it should be based on the premise, and it delivers because it feels like it is free enough to be as dark as it needs to be.

Just got back from seeing it. Kind of a mixed bag for me, didn't love it, didn't hate it. Episode 7 definitely did a lot more for me, left that film feeling ecstatic about the future of Star Wars. This one was more of a "That was cool, bring on episode 8 though"

A lot of the characters felt half baked, and didn't really get enough time to develop. It basically made all of the death scenes fall totally flat for me.

Strongly, strongly disliked TFA for various reasons, but mostly because it was a beat for beat remake of Star Wars. Not to mention that its existence alone killed the EU...

Juat saw Rogue One, and I didn't think it was possible(especially after The Force Awakens), but Rogue One has made me a Star Wars fan again. Absolutely loved it. It had Easter Eggs, sure, but it wasn't dependent on rehasing a similar plot structure. It was able to also de-romanticize that universe in a way that was needed and refreshing.

And to top it off, to see a prominent throw back to KotOR had me a little watery eyed.

Feels like coming home!!!

Majority of the EU being trash and there being little room for new ideas is what killed the EU.

Killing the EU is why they could make Rogue One.

Just came back from my second showing and had a better crowd than my first. There was a couple in Jedi cosplay and at ending scene there were a lot of fun reactions

I feel like you could nitpick this movie to death, and a lot of it would be warranted. The character development starts and stops in weird points relative to the structure of the movie as a whole. The crew barely develops any real relationship with each other. There are a bunch of unearned cameos, which lends the whole movie the feeling of existing more to fill in this canonical blank than to tell anything meaningful on its own. I could go on if I cared to.

But I don't really care to, because I had a really good time. As a fan, I thought they tonally nailed what I wanted to see from Star Wars for a long time. It's darker, edgier, and less certain, with more grounded people who are overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the galactic struggle.
I liked seeing inside the Rebel Alliance and seeing a group riven with infighting, aided by rogues who did not all have hearts of gold. I liked the elements of Imperial occupation we saw on Jedha.
And I was really impressed with the action. The third act climax was the most exciting grand-scale Star Wars battle yet presented onscreen, even if it seems grossly outsized compared to the scope of what's going on. In that way, I got exactly what I wanted.

A lot of blockbusters these days seem to whiff on the character fundamentals but skate by on just being good enough kinetic experiences with the right tonal feeling to leave the audience happy, and Rogue One is still one of those movies. But it's probably the most pleased I've been with that kind of movie in a very long time.
