Bandai Namco teases new GOD EATER project

I can't talk for PS4, but Toukiden is the only one that tanked on Steam, and not because it's a bad game, but because it's a bad port by Tecmo-Koei (who don't have a very good reputation on Steam to put it mildly). God Eater did fine.

That's actually a pretty decent number on Steam for a full-price release of an 'unknown' franchise. The port and game are great, so it's only going to increase with every subsequent sale.

Of course, not having a handheld version or bad version is probably not a good idea for most japanese games.
Tanked was probably too harsh on my part but the persistent idea that hunting games will take off if they just got console/PC releases is mind numbing when we see several notable examples doing exactly the opposite. It's also too bad that the one genre example I think would've had a good shot at real success (PSO2) gets forever held back in Japan.

Meanwhile on the lowly unpopular 3DS Monster Hunter has continued chugging along and cultivatied a sizable loyal western audience (now a million strong, more than all other PC/console hunters combined). But you know, it'd REALLY take off if it was just on Steam/PS4.

Hopefully this means a PS4 and PC lead platform base, with no vita version. I'd like to see god eater get the best technicals possible, not be held back by current handheld technology

With the sales distribution of the previous games in Japan, and the shitshow Toukiden 2 turned out to be, that's not happening.

No? But toukiden came out on all 3 platforms and still sold like shit. I expect this to be marketed heavily in the west, and not just dependant on lower end japanese vita players

US Bamco tweeting at least makes me hope for a close western release. By the time GE2RB got localized i already had lost interest.

Lower end? It's not going to get these kind of numbers in any other country, on any other Sony platform. Bamco US's level of marketing isn't going to change that.

just for comparison

How many of them actually take advantage of the hardware they are on is part of the equation in my opinion. I wouldn't expect PS4 games that look like uprezed psp games (because that's what most have been so far) to light the charts on fire.

I love these games but I loathe playing them on handhelds

How many more Japanese hunting games have to tank on PS4/Steam before this myth is debunked?

Not amazing on Steam at least. According to Steamspy:

God Eater Resurrection: 36,467 ± 4,929
God Eater 2 Rage Burst: 35,769 ± 4,882

GE2RB PS4 also ranked pretty low in the PAL charts but the fact it showed up at all was probably a miracle.
It's kinda interesting to see the discrepancies in ownership numbers considering both games are only available in a bundle on PC.
But yeah, not sure how to interpret the numbers. 35k for a relatively unknown Japanese franchise releasing on PC for the first time at 60 bucks? Hm

So you expect Toukiden 2 on ps4/pc to sell well because they made a big open world game?

Not really because as much as I enjoy many of their games Koei has never put out huge hits outside of maybe DOA. I do think if they marketed it right that could be more successful then the first game but that wouldn't be saying much.

I could see a God Eater, Monster Hunter or hunting game from From Software being successful if it took advantage of modern hardware though.

SteamSpy is just statistical analysis and can't be completely accurate, that's why you also always have a margin of error.

Those numbers aren't amazing, but they're fine. As you said, relative unknown japanese franchise first time on PC at full price. It will be more interesting to see how well it does after the next couple sales.

Unless the Switch releases on the 26th of February, this means it's coming out for the PS4, right?

PS: I have a moral obligation to ask for a .hack remaster collection on every God Eater/SAO thread

The date is for an update about the game, not the release.
But it's a given that the game will release on PS4.

I'm not sure what you mean. The Switch is going to be announced in full in less than two weeks, so the gates will be open for third party announcements thereafter.

Not that I'm saying that this is coming to Switch, but being announced in February doesn't have any bearing on whether it will be announced for Switch.

It's coming out on PlayStation regardless of whether there's a switch version or not. Switch exclusivity would put it head to head with MH.

As there was sales talk about the Steam version, it's now sitting at 112k. Sales tripled since the thread was made.
To be fair, I think that's largely because of its sale price. Two games for $20 is pretty appealing to the average consumer.

E: and yeah, I doubt GE3 will be on Switch. They've carved up a niche on Sony platforms so I don't see them changing things up.

I hope they bring back both blood arts and predator styles. Especially the predator stylrs. Really miss those playing GERB.

I feel like the game could have done better if Namco had set-up the way Resurrection was handled better. As it is it feels like barely anyone even knows you get 2 games in one unless you're already a fan (and even then there are always people thinking Resurrection being a preoder offer only or being surprised that they actually got 2 games with the purchase).
It's not really noticeable that Resurrection is included with just a glance, there's no store page for it, so no chance to find the game by searching for it or reviews for it, etc.

I can't really say how much of an impact this really made, but I do think they missed themselves a good number of sales.

Anyway, still looking forward to more news.
