Despite all the crap going on I still love this place as a gaming community

Yes, communities are about people, a huge part is, but a community's name still counts for something as well. It's more than just the people.

I kinda liken it to sports when people say a team is just a name, it's about the players and the coaches on the team. And that is true to an extent, but for example the Yankees will always be the Yankees. A team that no matter how bad the players suck on any particular year, will always be a big name and a place people will want to play.

Once an online community has been established as such, it more often than not stays that way. As long as NeoGAF is a big brand name, it will be a huge gaming community. Maybe not quite as big for a while going forward with the exiles, but it will still be a very large community. Brand names will always matter.

No kidding. Hopefully Resetera won't be accepting scumbag members like Electric Eye.
I already see the "resign bitch" suiciders posting in reset era without skipping a beat.

Not going to lie though, I will lurk there for the Nirolak threads. He posts super interesting stuff about the business side of games.

I'll give my story of how i found this place

Few years ago, the greatest forum known to man took place on Gametrailer.com
The site underwent some changes(budget cuts), this ruined the forums since they removed faction forums which were private group forums that all were active on their own right. Right after the announcement GT forums was deemed doomed and people already started to pack their bags.
People tried make new forums, some even made dedicated sites for exiling GT members, but for every try, the new communities turned out tiny in comparison, activity wasnt even close to hayday of GT.

I became a vagabond, searching forums far and wide.
IGN? wasteland
Gamespot? more active but mostly wasteland
GameFAQs? not inactive, but horrible forum design and layout

Then i finally found this place, the front page made me excited, as it was like a swirling storm of active threads, all competing to be on top of front page, JUST like hayday of GT.
Only one problem, I didnt have a eligible email to sign up, I searched around the net for like 2 hours to circumvent this, but failed. Eventually forgot about Gaf, and went on with my life, Forumless vagabond.

Few years and I'm reaching the end of my education, and I'm currently in internship at a school were I do IT support, I had received a work email, but took me two months to realize i could finally try to sign up on Gaf, got approved about two months later, only now I only posted once every weeks or so, my forum life was so long ago, I no longer make sure to check in regularly like I did in the GT days when I was a teen.

And here we are, Gaf imploding for no real reason, the last bastard of great videogame forums going down in smoke, forever dooming the internet to be scattered into millions of tiny forums of echo chambers instead of embracing each others wild side with big and active forums.

Edit - still going to stay here until it/if it turns into yet another forum wasteland, i dont care about people who share my opinion, i dont care about what fanbase you belong to, really all I care about is to post in active forum filled up with diverse people and diverse opinions, but I guess that's too much to ask for. Maybe human being really are a tribal animal, a fact I always try to neglect

Nice story!

but. It isn't. (imploding, going down in smoke, scattered, etc.).

Yea no problem, this place is still plenty active with still plenty of good threads going around
Frankly, in my opinion the people who left are perhaps jumping to conclusions, and haven't heard the adage innocent until proven guilty

No real reason?

I mean draconian administration, going elitist over the years, questionable moderation and favoritism with the recent events happening

Including of course the wipe out of entire forums

It's imploding for a reason; the content of this forum were it's people and they don't care about this place anymore.

Not so sure about that. NeoGAF has a brand has been damaged - over the years, and certainly now. This seems irreparable to me.

That's bullshit because the Yankees will never suck.

draconian administration - I like. Otherwise you get gamefaqs.
going elitist over the years - no idea what this means, is it code?
questionable moderation - all forums especially large ones have less than perfect moderation
favouritism with the recent events - what?
wipe out of entire forums - OT isn't "wiped" it is just not public right now.

whether the people who made the community great are gone or not is far from decided. Since people like you keep posting that it is dead I'm thinking perhaps it isn't.

That's odd though because you can just simply register there. No idea how they even expect you to be posting there when you can't even register.

I would say it was way overblown and over reacted. I have been on GAF since the gaming-age days and I thought it was the best gaming forum and even the OT was better than many other social forums out there. All those negatives you mentioned were never a problem for some people because some just didn't care about that stuff...it was a good board with good amount of traffic and that's what they cared about...it seemed like it was the mods who had issues with Lore and everyone just followed them out. I can see why, the mods were the ones active in the threads, Lore was mostly not and so most people identified and bounded with the mods more than with an almost "faceless" owner.

I would say they are largely gone but certainly replacements can raise up overtime if GAF still can go on.

Basically all the good stuff (community, news, insiders) from GAF is now (very) active at the new site, and its functionally head and shoulders better.

Really? I think it's actually the opposite. It doesn't fill out the screen, the theme is definitely worse, smaller avatars, it is way less snappy (I have to hover over things and wait for it to open instead of just being able to click on it, useless animations at other points), the layout is worse which decreases readability. That's what I've noticed from the short time I've been there so far.
But, one huge positive thing: You can actually report posts now which is great.

Obviously the forum just started existing and they have time to improve things but for now, this one definitely beats it in terms of functionality and layout.

Yeah I'll be bailing as soon as *they* are ready to accept nobodies like me lol. The 'issues' with the owner, the invisible moderation, the lack of a true OT, the horrible/nasty people coming out of the woodwork are all huge reasons to jump ship but ultimately the undeniable truth pertaining to this thread in particular is that the gaming community has moved on. Hoo-doo, Nirolak, Ghost Trick, Orbital Beard, EFB, Jawbreaker, Nyt8 are just a few of the really, really active and positive in their contributions users just a couple of small weeks ago who have in all likelihood posted their last post here already. There will be new accounts here and maybe glass half full both sites can coexist well and that would be great! But if I was hedging my bets as to where the fun and discussion/insight will be had over the big events of the next month or so (the OTs for the 3 27th October games, Nintendo's Q3 financial results, review thread today for Mario) I'd wager the higher activity and insight will not be found here. Media Create is dead for example, despite the best efforts of some who have remained here. It's a shame but the front page is just a crawl.

So yeah, I loved (last letter there is key) this place primarily as a gaming community too but it looks like what I liked about it is gonw and not coming back.

They'll never improve that horrendous mod and admin team.

If you dont recognise GAF as being elitist you are obviously that way yourself and therefore cant see the wood for the trees.

This happens almost always on older forums though, not saying that makes it okay

questionable moderation and favoritism with the recent events happening
I dont frequent enough to know exactly what you mean, care to elaborate? genuinely interrested

Are you referring to the temporary shutdown of off-topic?

Agreed, the strength of this forums has been its people, but as long as people remain, and stays active, I have faith we wont miss the people who left.

It really depends on what places you frequent though. I'm mostly into older and niche games and haven't really noticed any elitism there.

Google neogaf, evilore and tyler malka and tell me what you see. The brand is done.

I'm not sure i completely agree with that guy, but elitism among users definitely seems more widespread than more public forums.

I could easily quote over 30 posts on the first page alone where people talk in a downgrading, condescending way to another user. Damn probably nearly that in a single thread. Yes its a widespread thing online, but its definitely worse here than most other places I have been a member of.

I was asking for the definition from you otherwise I don't know what I am agreeing with.
What does it actually mean to you to state neogaf is elitist. Who was not being respected? It's odd because apparently social justice was on the nose, but now it seems that the problem is a cruel hive mind and actually more attitude policing was necessary.

In time, I hope this place will be better than ever, with many of the not so great members having moved onto the other site.

Yeah when you look at the mod list over there and then the members who are populating the threads, I have quite a bit of hope for the future of this forum. All the filth washed itself away.

Could anyone PM the secret code to enter ResetEra please? Thanks
It will be open for registrations in the next day or so, It will require a paid email like an isp but you will be able to register than. The secret codes were for the discords that were moving over but they are opening up registrations soon.

I'm down for ResetEra, as long as the mods are more managed there than here. Banning over opinions and going against the hivemind its bullshit.

I'm in my mid 30s, I'm not switching to another forum. Been rolling with gaf since 2001.
Same boat. I'm not against the other forum, just not tripping over myself to get an in there.

And I do want to echo the sentiment that the mods of the new place should see the people shit posting this forum and maybe reconsider approving their accounts.

I think that you will probably be better off here, that came about because some of the communities on the forum, I don't think it's going to change(much).

Depends on the person, what they want to see, and why they use any brand in the first place.

If I was in line at Chick fil a ready to buy a meal and I got an alert on my phone that said "Chick fil a CEO revealed to be a decades long serial killer......"

My reaction would be "Oh, well that's pretty fucked up.... so anyway yeah I'll have the grilled chicken sandwich and an order of chicken strips."

Why? Because I like the food. I would see an opportunity to fill my belly with deliciousness.

...huh, i didn't actually see any of that. that oughta teach me to skim through the FAQ thread :jnc

that having been said, i still can't see approvals taking as long as they did here (i recall someone saying it took them two years to get approved, which is frankly absurd), if only because there's not gonna be that many people chomping at the bit at first

Just giving an update. I registered yesterday and as of tonight my account has already been approved and linking my account here to show them I’m not a junior has made me a member there right off the bat. And they have the option to be emailed and alerts for when someone replies to you or the thread in general.
So far really digging ResetEra!

There isn't any listing of juniors at all, but I believe new users just aren't allowed to create new topics.

Try making a thread and report back. :D

Anyway, I'm digging ResetEra for now, mainly because of the community and old/familiar faces, but they really need to do something about their layout.

Seems you’re right as I don’t see any “create thread” “new topic “ option. Oh well I’m just glad to be approved so quick. I would hate to miss out on all the fun sales discussions happening and coming over the next few months. :)

A post by an administrator said one of their priorities is a dark theme which I’m glad about. And no, looks like I can’t create a thread for now. Oh well I’m still happy to be there and can interact with all my familiar faces from here. :)
