Taika Waititi to write and direct new Star Wars film

Taika Waititi will direct a new “Star Wars” movie for theatrical release, which he’s co-writing with “1917” scribe Krysty Wilson-Cairns, Disney and Lucasfilm announced on Monday.

The studio also confirmed that a new untitled “Star Wars” TV series is in the works at Disney Plus from “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland, which Variety reported exclusively last month.

The film news affirms reports that first broke in January that Waititi was developing a “Star Wars” movie, on the heels of his well-received work directing the season finale of the hit Disney Plus “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian.”

Cool. I like his work so I’ll look forward to this. Although I do wish so many people weren’t getting tied down into franchises and could produce original works instead. But that’s just how things are now.

cool he did a good Thor movie. guy is funny, if a little trolly at times. he has a sense for good visuals imo that my favorite thing about him. at the very least he is far more interesting than JJ/RJ.

however it does more solidify the fact that all the movies and projects are basically turning into the same thing. how many Marvel people are in SW at this point? countdown till Tessa Thompson shows up...

Is there a director left in Hollywood who's not slated to film a Star War?

Feige, J.D. Dillard, Johnson (no really it's still happening we promise), plus all the directors who were going to film one but then didn't (Bernioff/Weiss)...

He's responsible for the best Mandalorian episode:

After Thor: Ragnarok he made Jojo Rabbit and he's making a soccer movie right now. Those aren't franchises.

True. It just feels like every director or writer that has some buzz around them is doing their take on a Marvel or Star Wars film. But as you said, he’s doing other stuff too.

Doesn't matter if KK is still in charge. She will just bully him to insert her WAMANZ power SJW BS into any story he will come up with.

TLJ and ROS ruined my interest in Star Wars. I really don't care where they go with it and they have already basically made a mockery of the whole idea and turned the force into a get out of jail free card where it is super magic that can do anything.

Meh.

Thor Ragnarok was fun but a bit too goofy.

He also talked down fans who criticized having Portman as female Thor and iirc gave a response like "ah poor babies afraid of strong women" or some usual shit.

So none of this excites me much at all.

I imagine right now Hollywood is hurting bad.

I think I've only watched Thor of what he has directed. As long as the whole thing isn't improvised, I guess I can give it a shot.

I missed that exchange, and I’m not defending it if that’s really what he said, but in fairness: Jane Foster Thor is an actual thing, it happened in the comics and makes sense (imo anyway) to bring it to the MCU. Portman plays Jane Foster.

I wouldn’t have minded a recasting though, unless they have an FX plan to “buff” her up as Thor that isn’t too distracting.

The first thing I saw of his was JoJo Rabbit last year. Since then, I’ve been checking out his other work. That said, I really liked him as Hitler. I will definitely check this out!

I think it's because Portman just doesn't seem believable as a new Thor with her stature and all.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of him making a star wars movie. His directorial work
in Thor: Ragnarok was unremarkable. I suspect it's because well known and
respected movie makers like him are simply hired to lend their name to these
paint-by-numbers, producer driven movies. I guess it's a way for him to
finance his next passion project - as annoying as that is.

It's because he directed one of the most popular episodes of The Mandalorian.

I'm still meh on star wars. This guy seems a little two heavy on the jokes from what I have seen. I don't want a star wars like Thor or guardians of the galaxy.

Also when people keep mentioning he did one good episode on the Mandalorian it makes me remember how people kept saying that about Rian and breaking bad

And I really enjoyed that episode. But had I not known that he directed the
episode I would have never guessed that he was involved. From some of the
things I read about House of Cards and Mindhunter I gather that the directorial
style for these types of shows are typically dictated by the showrunner/producer.
Most of the cinematic universes are supposedly run the same way - this should
be especially true for Star Wars after Kathleen Kennedy allowed Rian Johnson
to tank the entire franchise.
So the question is why Taiki would want in on that kind of a deal. The story is probably
supervised by the 'Story Group' and he is constrained in his directorial decisions
by whomever is running the show at LucasFilms - I hope to god it's not Kennedy.
And the only reason why LucasFilms would want Taika to helm one of their movies
is because his name could be a box office draw. They could just as well hire a
nobody who could follow all the mandates from his higher-ups.

I mean there's a documentary on The Mandalorian and the directors streaming RIGHT NOW that kind of debunks that idea.

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you. I have no deep insights into the goings on behind those franchises and
generally no Idea of what I am talking about.:messenger_beaming: Generally speaking I would much rather see movie makers that I
enjoy make their own movies outside of those giant franchises. That being sad I'm sure Taika is quite happy with
his lot in life and the jobs he's working on. I wouldn't mind making a star wars movie for 1/10th of his paycheck,

Could be good. JoJo Rabbit was incredible so hopefully he delivers a Star Wars movie that is more character focused and less "insert giant action scene here, and forget the plot development" movie

We'll see.

Unpopular opinion but I thought Ragnarok was one of the weakest marvel films and the weakest of the mainline characters' solo films.

It was a discombobulated mess with no cohesion between the actors, Goldbloom was terrible and the film dragged on way too long with too little action.

Still though, Ragnarok beats the last 5 star wars films hands down, so...

You can do creative stuff inside a franchise. In fact waititi made a marvel film with loads of personality with Ragnarok

Good news.

I re-watched The Last Jedi last night..... check out the idiotic deleted scenes to know they were making it up as they went.

Please make a fun well structured movie without any 'relevant to our times' messages. It's in a Galaxy, Far, Far, Away after all.

so do yall think this will be the first Star Wars movie to have a pop song in it? i really liked the use of "Immigrant Song" in Ragnarok. plus these companies love to flex their licensing prowess. i could see it happening.

do you think they would ever put "I'm Just a Girl" in a SW? i could see the ex Weinstein chick doing something like that.
