Joe Rogan: "Video Games Are a “Problem” and Gamers Are Wasting Their Time"

Technically, all entertainment is a waste of time if you think about it. For me, I play games for fun and escapism. Never understood why video games are considered a waste of time, but things like social media, podcasts, movies, planting flowers, TV, fishing, partying, amusement parks, camping, mountain climbing, watching animals at the zoo, etc are fine. Those aren’t exactly productive either when you think about it.

No one dies listening to podcasts for 36 hours straight.

Game developers employ psychologists to increase the addictiveness of their products.

This will be a worldwide health issue as games become more and more engaging.
Pretty sure there are more people getting struck by lightning every year than there are people dying from video game overdoses. It's just not a real problem. Maybe nobody has died yet listening to Joe's podcast, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a waste of time.

It's only when I put games down did I learn guitar or how to ride mtb. These things I could of done and be way better at than I am now. On the flip side, some could say that guitar and mtb are a waste of time. It depends on the individual.

There's a place for video games, but to be all consumed by it, like I was at one time, does restrict your horizons to a certain degree. If it's done in moderation, then it's completely fine.

Jesus Christ this thing is gonna get a lot of mileage.

And I approve.

To me, the insidious thing about videogames is that they reset my daily plans. I get up, I have vague ambitions and goals but I also have a slow-burning glow of craving for a few minutes of being good at something (I'm not trying to sound emo, I'm good at plenty of stuff IRL, I think it's just another symptom of my perfectionism - perfectionism which I'm currently a million miles away from satisfying thanks to gaming) and by the end of those few minutes, which can stretch out to a whole morning during this time of COVID-19, my brain's a soup and all I can do is aimlessly distract myself for an hour or two before going back to the games~

Technically anytime I’m not working and getting paid is a waste of time.

Unless your monitizing a hobby it’s a waste of time.

I’m ok with wasting time because I get enjoyment out of it.

Its a harsh truth but Joe does have a point. I quit gaming 8 months ago. Bought a new car, I have an amazing new girlfriend, I make a shitload of money and I'm buying a house this spring. I party every weekend, I'm never home. I'm enjoying life. Do yourselves a favor, gaf. Stop trying to make gaming a career. Its cringe as fuck.

You can still accomplish those things while gaming as long as you properly balance your life. People have different priorities also. What’s important to one person might not be as important to someone else.

I've had all those things for years and I think video games still have their place, and a good place it is. Just strike a balance.

Well even going to school, working, all that shit can be considered a waste of time. 90% of people just do mudayne shit, 9-5 jobs just to pay bills and have a little free time and get old.

I like Rogan a lot but this "do something productive" talk is so silly.

Many people who play are productive members of society already, and games provide release from stress, excitement and mental stimulation -something which a lot of jobs lacks btw.

Everything which is pleasurable can be horrible if you do to escape your responsibilities. One of the greatest books of all time, Dom Quixote, was about a dude who was so obsessed about books that he went insane.

Joe is an expert on martial arts, bow hunting and conspiracy theories. Everything else he knows jack shit.

"Wait so you're running for president? Jamie look that up."

Having said that...Gaming is bad. For me, anyways. It's way too late to stop now though.

He's not wrong, honestly. But, at the same time, if you don't have your RL priorities in line, you should probably stop playing them for a bit.

Says the man who chats for hours on end about stuff. I like Joe Rogan but his takes on almost everything are atrocious.

How about this, Joe: People find ways to kill/waste their time because life is mostly boring. It's called entertainment, Joe. You know, the industry you make your money from, Joe. Videogames get you as far in life as listening to your podcast or watching an MMA event, Joe.

Joe is right but the main issue isn't videogames but mindless consumption. You can live a life consuming and consuming but never create any value for yourself, it acts like an opiate that captures most and leads you down a life of depression and anxiety.

This is easy to say but every time we binge a new Netflix series, scroll social media constantly, or cram a new game, its a negative behaviour reflecting excess that can create or feed addiction.

His problem is he is comparing himself to others. Because he said millions of times how when Quake 1 (and 2?) were out he was playing 24/7, he was addicted, spent shit ton of money on best internet etc. Then he realized he isnt doing shit and its affecting his life. That was his one and only gaming experience.

I have a job, girfriend, friends i go drinking with, workout and even have the time to watch tv shows on top of gaming. To me playing a game is like reading a book for someone, its my time off. Its the same benefit as anything you do in your spare time. But to him, he dropped everything just to play quake 12 hours a day and his life went to shit for a small second so thats how he views gamers...people just wasting time and staring at a screen all day long when that is far from being true. 2-3 hours of gaming a day wont kill your social skills, drop performance at work or get you a divorce.

Just watched the clip.

No, I'm not giving it to him. His point is fucking stupid.

Nobody playing video games thinks that they're learning a valuable skill. It's a leisure activity. "Why play video games/watch TV/read books when you can learn Jiu Jitsu instead?"

Yes Joe, learning a skill is obviously more productive than something people do to unwind at the end of the day. Nobody is arguing against that.

Playing video games is not as valuable of a skill as self defense. Who would even argue that?

In Joe's own words from that Jon Stewart episode though, we all just end up in the ground covered in dirt anyhow - so let people live how they want.

Joe's problem is that he has to talk for hours on end, and it's all recorded and release for public consumption.

I'm a fan of Joe's. This is dumb and he's just shooting shit as per usual.

It's not dying vs not dying.

Tons of meth users don't die but the drug destroys their lives. Videogames aren't meth but there's definitely a grey area these companies are falling over themselves to get to. How many gamers throughout the world are playing 40+ hours per week? I'll bet a lot.

By the way his analogy with jiu jitsu is laughable. How many people that practices martial arts can actually earn a living from it at any point of their life? I'm sure there are a lot more people earning a living by playing videogames (beta testers, pro players, critics, streamers, youtubers, speedrunners, etc.).

You can literally earn a living from anything that interests people. The catch is like in any other field it will always be a privileged/lucky minority who can really live of their passion. Most people have boring jobs they hate or simply tolerate, so they need to dedicate free time to their passions.

P.S: Does anybody know if Joe Rogan has played another videogame since Quake?

Yup, super common.

"I had no self-control drinking, so alcohol should be banned."

what's the grey area / what do you want changed?

nobody is forcing you to play fortnite

First of all, I think this is normal reaction to absolute explosion in gaming prevalence recently, at least in the West. There’s that research recently that said 50% of Americans are gamers. Imagine how far we’ve come from nerdy, niche, looked down upon hobby to being mainstream and huge part of entertainment industry. These companies and CEOs wouldn’t be making so much money if there wasn’t so many of us using their products.

Secondly, there needs to be a distinction between those who neglect their real lives because of gaming (addicts) and those who because their real life became shitty turned to gaming to keep themselves sane or just for escapism. I wouldn’t be so hard on the second group.

Thirdly, economic productivity has significantly increased worldwide in recent decades while we have more entertainment to consume than ever. Is there really a problem? I don’t see it.
You could say that unless you’re working in a factory 12h a day making stuff or building buildings, bridges, roads etc, you’re not really contributing to development. Managers, accountants, lawyers...so useless to humanity’s progress. I’ll give doctors a pass, they’re at least keeping us alive. Government workers? Parasites.

Talk show hosts? Is there anything more worthless? Good thing air is not in short supply.

Yeah dude he's a huge success. Undeniable he got that cash moneys. As they say, he's "Broprah." A dude who combines guy's love of MMA and comedy so there's a little something everyone can appreciate about his show (including myself) to some degree. He also has the humility to acknowledge when he was wrong about something which I admire. And he's open to discussing political ideas from multiple directions, which was once common sense but is now increasingly rare and probably much needed to avoid societal collapse. There's a lot of good stuff to be said about him.

But I used to try to listen to every episode and I just can't, because the areas that he's not an expert in he really knows way less than an average joe and has some super dumb takes. "It's entirely possible" that much weed smokin' has an effect on one's mental capacity. But hey, I like the guy. I still listen when there's a really intriguing guest. I just consider his opinion to be uninformed, unless the topic is the best way to kick a guy or how to refrigerate elk meat efficiently, in which case Joe is the #1 authority.
