Joe Rogan: "Video Games Are a “Problem” and Gamers Are Wasting Their Time"

I disagree, though I think it depends a lot of WHAT TYPES of games you play. Personally I think video games are an incredibly powerful tool for sharpening the mind and this DOES have carryover into real life challenges and endeavours. This is important for both the young who are developing their minds and the old who are trying to keep hold of theirs and prevent degeneration as the effects of ageing creep in.

I agree with Rogan but he forgot to mention that watching UFC or any other form of Sport is also a complete waste of time.

Yeah he has also said he can’t play them cos he would do nothing but because they are so fun

He is a meathead so of course h will think this way. He thinks everyone should be lifting or something

That’s fine man. I don’t care. I still enjoy his podcasts.

I can like him even if I disagree with some of his views. What a concept, right?

It’s easy for Rogan feel this way when you are worth $100M+ and are connected to celebrities and crazy parties and drugs and whatever else goes on in that scene. Of course you might think games are a waste of time if you’re filthy rich and famous.

For the rest of us, we have our families, friends, day jobs and whatever other hobbies to make our lives a bit more fun. I’ll take gaming over golf, CrossFit, or whatever else it is that people like Rogan think I should be doing.

Well, I mean, yeah. He isn't all that wrong. It's a fun waste of time, but a waste nontheless if you ask me. Even fictional books learn me something of value (adding to your vocabulary, teaching new writing techniques, etc). Video games were the sole reason I didn't develop social skills till my 20s. I'll continue to do it, but I recognise it doesn't add much value to my life. Yes, they can be provide you with unforgettable adventures, but those adventures were pretty meaningless in the end. Just my two cents.

I get Joe. He was addicted to quake to the point where he was unproductive. I have similar issues where I can play a game, not have fun, and yet be addicted to the routine of just doing it over and over again. Had to quit MTG, Dota, Spelunky for those reasons.

IT's a matter of perspective really. Ask yourself what you would be doing if you weren't playing videogames or if videogames did not even exist. Would the other activity be a better or worse use of time? If better, why not try it?

His right, its only entertainment for us, but that is not the right way to say things, his podcast is waste of time to if you want to get technical.

I'm always wary of people who think they know what's best for others, or what is the "right" way to spend your time. Nobody has that kind of credibility. No one even knows why we are here on this planet or what it means, so who are you to tell me what I should do with my time?

I mean if we want to be technical everything is a waste of time, you are going to die eventually and you cannot take anything with you. As far as gaming goes I think it is all down to the person to determine what they enjoy. I play games and am not addicted to them, I also workout, build models, paint, hang out with friends, etc. It all depends on the person. To generalize and say that games are a waste of time while you put out 2-3 hour long podcasts is just blah, along with getting high and tripping on shrooms; well idk if you have any right to say what is a waste of time or not in that case Mr. Rogan.

Its a harsh truth but Joe does have a point. I quit gaming 8 months ago. Bought a new car, I have an amazing new girlfriend, I make a shitload of money and I'm buying a house this spring. I party every weekend, I'm never home. I'm enjoying life. Do yourselves a favor, gaf. Stop trying to make gaming a career. Its cringe as fuck.
So..................................................................let me get this straight by your logic of thinking and questioning on why you are still on this website. So....and I mean I'm scratching my head. When you play videogames. You can't have a life? Wow, the ignorance of people like you and Joe Rogan.

gotta love how he immediately brings up an example that is literally the exact same...

I would argue in this day and age it is WAAAAAAAY more plausible to make a career playing video games than to make a career being a martial arts master of any kind.

and learning most martial arts is also a complete waste of time, like every hobby on earth.
you can't really defend yourself with most of the traditional martial arts anyways, that has been demonstrated time and time again, where karate masters get totally fucked by people who did Kravmagar for 5 years.

Martial arts also can't dodge bullets or catch bullets with your teeth. I know, I tried and it didn't go well and now I have drain bramage.

Partying every weekend... CDC, you’ll be wanting to check for coronavirus over here! Also, am I under the impression you got rid of the old Asian grill and got a new one?

Any time spent doing something you enjoy, assuming no one is being harmed in the process, is not wasted.

Yeah I'm on board with this, unless you play games to the detriment of your other obligations. Joe's gonna work out and do his MMA stuff and maybe think that's more worthwhile but he's gonna be dead and bones in the ground with the rest of us soon enough.

Weed and mushrooms are awesome though, no game comes anywhere near how amazing psylocybin is, unless we had some Matrix like interface and even then, who knows.

Balance. It’s all that’s needed. If gaming gets in the way of important things then step back and balance it.

Says the guy making money off talking about completely random stuff.

Edit:

I suppose he's making money off of it. So there's that.

Seriously though, escapism is never a waste of time.

Everything in moderation friends.

Doesn’t that apply to every pastime?

Like masturbating and having sex feels good and exciting but does it really get you anywhere if it doesn’t give you an offspring?

Companionship and intimacy are important for the one's well being.

This is just something people like to say but is unfounded and unprovable.

There are plenty of studies on non-human primates and the psychological benefits of companionship. *shrug*

You can have that without the sex though? A relationship is more than the sexual implications that come with it.

Sure. I was just framing my response based on your examples.

Everything in moderation and never in extremes. I get where Joe is coming from and I agree. The neat thing about technology is that you can merge interests and still be doing things.

I merge my interests sometimes when I need to relax. I will do a 3 day backpacking trip, take a Switch lite a power bank and a kindle oasis. I can knock out 35 miles and be in nature for a weekend while enjoying the quiet and perhaps playing some video games and finishing some books.

Joe talked about playing Quake or UT on one of his podcasts after work and then had dreams about his play sessions. I've had that happen to me a few times but only when playing something far too many hours and to the point of exhaustion.

It is true, I agree with him, and the best part is that it doesn't matter. People always try to find problems with Joe to go after him and his podcast.

What if I suggested that it wasnt the video games which were the root of your social issues? Maybe you were just drawn to them due to your preference for introversion and seclusion? Very much a chicken/egg scenario but I find people tend to gravitate towards what they prefer. People who read fiction all day are the same way.

Also, I think he is just mad that he doesn't have more time for games.

I mean if Henry Cavill has time to build a PC at his Nanna's house...
