Animal Crossing wins TGS game of the year

It’s the kind of game that even casuals can get invested in. The story is as shallow as they come but the gameplay and Minecraft-like creativity practically felt endless.

I stopped around 100 hours but I know people like my sister and mom who’ve both put well over 300 hours into it. It’s been ages since I’ve seen my family this into a game (last time being when Pokémon sun and moon came out)and frankly I respect that.

it’s not my GoTY but it’s still a pretty damn good game.

My mom has put an absolutely insane amount of hours into it, easily 500+. She plays from 1 to 3 hours everyday and she always has something left to do, somehow. I found it to be quite addictive at launch and the following months, but I'm at just around 150h or something because of the slow way they've been drip-feeding us new content and things to do.

Case in point: we've been waiting for the café update for quite some time now, and it's nowhere near in sight.

It's not my kind of game, but the fact that Animal Croassing managed to bring a new audience into the gaming community and at such astounding numbers as well deserves praise.
Unless Cyberpunk is everything we hope for, AC should win.
It's probably the game that's going to have the biggest impact in the gaming industry this generation outside of BR. We are going to have other Companies trying to copy AC for years to come.

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Game is nice, far better than TLOU2 imo.

Bought it on launch and for a few weeks I was hooked up, doing chores, talking to the animals and decorating the house. It was the most relaxing game I've played for sure. Sadly after those initial weeks the game become a slog so I left it.

Still, Doom Eternal should be the GOTY. :messenger_squinting_tongue:

Yes, I guess.

I just think it's completely pathetic and, honestly, I get frustrated at things I just don't understand. I'll never fathom why an adult would spend more than maybe an hour playing Animal crossing and, similarly, I'll never get why some men get their kicks dressing up in nappies.

I wish adults didn't buy this garbage and then Nintendo would fund games that maybe I'll like. So it does impact me in some respect.

It isn't a children's game. It is a game meant for all ages, whether young or old. Just like Mario, Donkey Kong, Earthbound, Tetris, Puyo Puyo, and other such titles are. It seems far more pathetic that you are so triggered by the concept that other folks would play this innocuous game in your bid to appear to be an "adult".

Maybe you should take the words of C.S. Lewis to heart:

“When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty, I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

― C.S. Lewis, On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature

You gotta hand it to Nintendo they sure know how to milk their fans. I don't think any other publisher (except perhaps Activision with CoD) could possibly release the same game over and over again and maintain such high levels of hype.
Over and over again, huh? This is literally the 3rd console Animal Crossing in 19 fucking years. How are these fans milked?

Some folks I know (including myself) also only played like... 2 AC games prior to this one, each nearly 7-8 years apart. I went from Wild World to New Leaf to New Horizons. My friends went from AC on GC to New Leaf to New Horizons. Some didn't even play a game in the franchise since their first, whether it be the original GC release (or City Folk on Wii).

Seems like a lot of folks like to hate on Nintendo to pretend they are more adult than they really are. So insecure that they can't possibly admit that they want to play these games, but are too chicken to actually do it for fear of reprisals from their infantile friends.

My wife has been playing Animal Crossing non stop for two months now. She loves it.
Every time walk past her in the living room i whisper "stupid game".

It's a girly game. I understand why she loves it. But IN MY OPINION it's garbage.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
By a company that doesn't even attend. To me that (re)confirms TGS is legit.

No, the 'gameplay' loop seems incredibly boring. I have zero desire to play a boring game where nothing happens.

Which would be fine, but you are insulting those who enjoy the games and trying to act like you are superior, like you are more adult than they are. Hence my original post directed at you.

What exactlt is the criteria for winning Game of the Year? Regarding Animal Crossing is it:

Best art style? No.
Best graphics? No.
Best music? No.
Best mechanics? No.
Most sales? Sure.

It's basically a popularity contest. Nothing more.

Well... yes. That is how it has almost always been, with a few exceptions. It is a popularity contest, either from the general community or the "board" of whatever awards are being given out. Happens in music, film, books, etc.

Which is why people should never take these things super seriously and instead just focus and discuss their personal game of the years, without the vitriolic, infantile insults, console wars, and antagonism.

It's not just sales, the game is literally changing the industry forever, opened up gaming to a new audience and with record breaking numbers on top of it.
In a few years we will probably get our AC copy from Sony, EA, Microsoft and other games with focus on that same audience.
Outside of BR this generation, this is the game that is having the biggest impact on the industry.

My wife has the same taste in games as I do and AC does not really appeal to her. It's the gaming equivalent to Frozen and Lion King. I don't mean that as an insult but it is a family friendly game at a time when many families are in the house together.

20 million Nintendo bots "GOTY" :messenger_robot:. Surely the richest company in Japan can afford buying 20 million copies of its own game! :messenger_poop:

I'm just here for all the asshurt from people who didn't play/don't know dick about this game.

I didn't think it was for me either and I enjoyed the hell out of my time with it.

All the faux adults in here need to get a grip.

Amazing game. Well deserved. First time playing a Animal Crossing game and never thought I would like game like it, but I'm hooked. It is a beautiful time waster, especially with all the shit that is happening in the world. It came at the perfect time.

Oh my goodness. Seriously?

Name one way that this game has "changed the industry".

What a joke. This isn't the first family game to exist you know.

It's gonna be a sad day when devs are gonna copy this thing instead of making games like cyberpunk.

I'm not sure it's going to be as bad as the COD wave we had 10 years ago, a game like AC doesn't need that many resources.

Sounds like a problem with the developer, if they just chase market trends, and have no creative impetus of their own.

In reality, that developer shouldn't be copying Animal Crossing or Cyberpunk, which will also bring limited financial returns (clones don't tend to do well), but trying to find the next big thing beyond those two.

TGS award was properly judged by industry experts and Japanese ministry unlike western awards.
Lol even worse :ROFLMAO:

I'm trying to see the positive side, if you really want to do an animal crossing clone for easy money your probably never had the passion or talent or money or manpower to do anything remotely similar to cyberpunk to begin with, so yeah, no big dev team is gonna waste years\money and talent for similar projects, it always gonna be a side project with their b-team.

Very likely this game is better than Cyberpunk though..... and will end up selling more than it too

Oh wait are you one of those people that thinks if it doesn't have shooting in it, it cant be considered a game??

yeah because cyberpunk is only shooting.

also, dude the shooting is gonna be probably mediocre in cyberpunk, literally no one is buying that game to shoot stuff.

That's kind of like comparing Destination Wedding to 1917, though.

I enjoyed both of those movies. They were good for what they were. Can you remotely compare them, though?

Art is the execution of a concept, for instance Sgt Peppers is a far better late 60s psychedelic concept album than their satanic majesty by the Rollimg Stones

Whereas Animal Crossing is basically the perfect escape game, a shined and hardened diamond of its simulation genre, will Cyberpunk be the best cyberpunk shooter and fulfill its mandate of offering that near future power fantasy as well as Animal Crossing fulfills its?

That's to be seen, but I am sceptical
