I AM CURRENTLY IN PITTSBURG : PLEASE KEEP THE SPOILERS LIMITED PAST THE FIRST SET PIECE OF PITTSBURGH IF POSSIBLE
Sorry for the caps but I'm trying to keep this as spoiler free as possible regarding anything past the first big set piece of Pittsburgh as I am currently dealing with the local gang after a bit of wandering around.

Somehow I managed to remain spoiler free for TLOU:1 and started paying the Remastered version in October.
I don't enjoy the combat so I reduced the difficulty to Easy after the woman got iced so I could get through these parts and fast forward to the narrative.
Being spoiler free I really enjoyed the first ~20 min of the game but after that I have lost interest in the game because of the unsatisfying gameplay and narrative I don't really care for.

I think I gave this game a fair shake, but maybe the narrative will really pick up and really grip me in the near future, but maybe I'm wasting my time and thus far I have experienced everything this game has to offer.

Thoughts?
Should I keep going?
Am I feeling this way because reality is a bit bleak and the game is hitting 'too close to home' and I should try picking it up again later?
Is there a story beat I should get to before throwing in the towel?

Nah, i felt the same as you when i played the game, i completed it and thought the story was just "fine" for the most part.
Just drop it if you're not liking it, odds are you won't really be too impressed by this point.

I almost gave up on it after playing through the beginning and got to that settlement with fireflies or something like that. Thought it was boring but then it got better and better. Loved it in the end. One of my favorite games

I didn’t like it at first either, probably took me a few hours to get into it. After initially liking the beginning intro, I was so bored. But I stuck with it and it turned out to be one of my favourite games of all time, and now I’ve played through it at least 10 times since it first released.

Ultimately it’s up to you if you want to continue or not, nobody else can convince you otherwise. Some people adore it right off the bat, some people play it all the way through and hate it.

Just fucking play the game through or quit. I find these threads so pointless.
Sorry but I'm trying to find out for myself if this acclaimed is still worth trying or if it's simply not for me.
I'm not one to give up on a game, especially one with soo much buzz, so sure I'm very LTTP and this is the first 'big game with wide audience approval' in a very long time that I couldn't stomach.
To be fair, it doesn't sound like you are having any fun, so why bother?

Not every game is for everyone.

I mean, either you are feeling it or you aren’t by that point
Yes, I'm right there but wanted confirmation.

Your first mistake is playing it on easy. The game is far far less satisfying without playing it on Hard at the minimum

The story personally picked up towards the end of Pittsburgh for me.
Difficulty was lowered since I didn't care much for the scenarios and figured I would double down on the narrative. For me personally I don't think cranking it up would help.
I can try to finish Pittsburgh and see how I feel then.

LOL, sounds like there's still a chance for a turnaround!

I dont think there is much logic in worsening the gameplay experience just to get through it.

The main meta for TLOU is resource management and carefully approaching conflicts due to the easy possibility of death. The lower difficulty levels you can play as a straight up shooter more or less, which pretty much changes the game

What time is it?
While it felt dated mechanically at release and the story covers worn ground, the relationship between Joel and Ellie salvages what could have been a forgettable game. You are still in the early stages of that relationship. I'd keep going.

You're missing out so much by playing on easy. A huge part of the game is the tension you experience by barely surviving encounters and not knowing if your supplies are gonna last.

I totally get it, and originally I would find myself basically save scumming a ton (because I would die) while trying to get perfect or near perfect clears on these scenarios while using all the resources in the immediate environment. That's my fault I guess and I didn't find success to be satisfying. Neither going full Metal Gear or Last Action Hero was satisfying.

Represent.

Represent(ative) of bad opinions
If you're playing this on easy and complaining about the gameplay just stop playing. The game is meant to be played on Hard. Its completely different.

Yeah, the front half of this city seems to be front loaded with this and I'm like, OK Ellie get off your high horse. It's a fucking jungle out here, lol.

I thought the start was a bit slow, but once it was just me and Ellie, it was good all the way.

If you still don`t like it by now and don`t enjoy the combat, probably the game is not for you.

I liked the story a lot, but i think that appreciating the survival aspects of the gameplay is still gonna be a major part of your overall enjoyment of the game.

Actually, i raised the game difficulty to make it more enjoyable in that sense.

If i were you, i am not sure i would bother anymore just for the story.

Maybe watch it on youtube?

If you don’t like it now you won’t like it. I gave it a go as well purely because of all the hype when it was in the bargain bin and unsurprisingly to me I didn’t like it, because I didn’t like the gameplay in the uncharted series either.

For me Survival difficulty was perfect difficulty setting, it was hard enough to be satisfying but not enough to be frustrating.

In normal and hard the game gives you too much resource to the point that it takes lot of fun out of the encounters.

And people wonder why FromSoftware doesn't like to put difficulty option in their games.

Not to derail but I also got UC4 from the bargain bin and that was probably a bad idea since I'm thoroughly exhausted of the series' gameplay at this point. $8 to find out!

I mean I don't, and maybe I would have enjoyed this game more if it were turned to Survival out of the box.
In my opinion the combat in TLOU is build around Survival difficulty, the fun is trying to survive encounters with what little resource and bullets you have left.

Playing on easy is of course going to give you unsatisfying gameplay.

I disliked most of it, but the "winter chapter", I think it's chapter 7, I enjoyed a lot, but then it goes back to shit afterwards.

never did for me. I tried it on PS3 and didn't like it. Gave it another shot on PS4. Still didn't like it. I can't tolerate more than 3-5 hrs of it apparently. Cuz thats where i quit every time.

When you find a time machine and visit the multiplayer when it was tactical and intense, before it was ruined by micro transactions and pay to win bullshit 👍

Oh you mean SP... never? It is just above average from start to finish imho.

If you're not feeling it after the prologue, the game is not for you. The rest of the game won't change your mind. You should move on to something else.

The game hooked me immediately, and also really, really doubled down for me about 60% of the way through during the "Winter" chapter. That in particular is one of my favorite sections in gaming, period. However, if you do not like the gameplay then I don't know what exactly you're playing this for. It's simply a really great game that isn't for you because of your own personal gaming preferences.

That's fine! I think Breath of the Wild is boring as shit. We all have our own preferences and/or blind spots.
Like lots of others in here, I suggest you play something you do like instead.
To get the story just watch a youtube edit of all story cutscenes or whatever.

There are some games that take 10 hours to get good, like Final Fantasy XIII. Once they unleashed the combat system and gave you a full party I actually found myself enjoying it.

However. Last of Us isn't one of those games. Whatever you've done so far is what you'll be doing for the rest of the game. Maybe do one more section and then drop it if you don't like it.

I loved it back and the day and the ending is exactly what I would have done (or tried to and fail at) in that situation. Maybe watch the rest of the game's cutscenes.

I was just about ready to drop the game after Pittsburgh. But, I did perservere and it was worth it. The last third is without question the best, at least on a first playthrough. Both the story and the gameplay picks up by a lot I feel and the ending is quite something. If you do drop it I think you should still watch a cinematic compilation of the last parts.

Without potentially spoiling the game for OP the ending of the game is exactly what I would NOT do in Joel's situation at the hospital, but I understand why he did it and why it fit with the story.

Druckman said his politics informed The Last of Us' ending and I'm like, damn, that is one "I got mine" right wing wacko ending. I loved it.

When the credits roll and you feel relieved you don't have to play it again just because you spent $60 on it.

Edit: I thought Op said part II. Part 1 was good from the get go. : /

If it didn't grab you from the beginning, I think the game might not be for you or where your head is right now. Might be worth coming back to it some other time.

I've had the same thing with Tsushima. It was so boring on regular difficulties but when I switched to Lethal, everything started making sense. The game is trying to be realistic with its combat, so having enemies cut you and not killing in two slashes just feels wrong. But when they are able to kill you if you blink for a second, this makes the game feel much more alive.

Since the first second.

Maybe you just don’t like it... move on.
I feel the same. This game hooked me from the very first second. Loved the prologue. I showed it to my sister and she was holding her tears, demanding that I played more. Yes, it slows down a bit from time to time, but, to me, is great all around, specially if you turn off hearing mode.

I feel it was a very conservative ending. Not woke at all. To explain more would be to spoil it for OP.

That Neil guy sure loves himself dearly. I haven't seen someone post this many personal photos unless they're an Instagram thot :D
Why someone would leave any decisions (even something as minutely trivial as this) up to internet strangers has always baffled me.
For the same reason why people play hyped up games - to feel like the society accepts them.

Gameplay wise? It never gets better. It's exactly what it is from the beginning with no deviation, and I truly hated the gameplay in TLOU1.

That said, it's worth sticking through it for the story and characters. This was fantastic all the way through IMO. It's he opposite of TLOU2. I hated the story, but I think the gameplay was actually a huge step up. Stick through for the gameplay in 2 IMO

You mean the baby at farm stuff? How is it conservative? That's just called "normal functional family" :D Or does "woke" = "having three husbands, one wife and an open relationship"? :D

I remember him specifically saying that Ellie's character as his "secret" agenda. AKA making Ellie a powerful female lead with her own flaws and struggles, not making it an obvious one note girl power story like other shitty poorly thought-out pieces of entertainment. The relationship between father and daughter is a powerful theme. They did not fall in the obvious trap of Joel man bad. The ending had nothing to do with right or left imo. You can use spoiler tag in next post because I don't possibly see how the ending of that game was in anyway political.
