We made it fellas! The NES and Atari bros. We waited 30 years for this.

We are in the future now.

this does looks better than i expected, seem more efforts were put in, than even MM.

But decima engine is pretty good already, as i seen in DS on PC, so scaling up like so is not surprising.

However the gameplay still looks cross gen

Everyone thirsting over these graphics and all i saw was same old open world gameplay. Good for those who want the same, but im looking for those trying something different.

Also, Guerilla, Ill keep this simple, KILLZONE MFers.
dude its a sequel … did you expect it to turn into a FPS game??? some of these responses are ridiculous what exactly were people expecting???

Kind of excited for in depth videos to review this. This isn’t my field so I’m not sure if it’s the art style that’s so impressive or if its some technical shit being used.

How do you post MP4 files embed like that? Tell me how you do this sorcery?
every imgur upload has three formats. mp4, gif, gifv. they only give you the mp4 URL for some reason, but you can change it to gif or gifv and get a higher quality version (source quality) of the upload. you can then use the insert image feature to copy and paste the .gif url. gifv doesnt look as good.

i am also capturing the gif at 30 fps which increases the size but im hoping mobile users have gifs disabled when using data.

yeah, a lot of it is the hyper realistic artstyle for sure. everything is designed to pop. its basically the opposite of the last of us 2 which goes out of its way to drain the colors from the picture to give it a more photorealistic look.

i personally prefer the rdr2 style of photorealism. not too bright, not too dark, but it's good to have variety.

A highly successful and praised game at that.
Right, but there are examples even with the Zelda universe that I can point to show that sequel to a specific universe is hardly the one that reinvents the formula entirely (e.g. Ocarina, Majoras etc). To do what Nintendo does, would be for Guerilla Games to finish the story they have and with the 4th installment completely start over. Hell, God of War basically did that; but they found a good way to maintain the connection across the games.

Visually a masterpiece, but in terms of gameplay does a lot of things I just don't care for. Aloy constantly talking to herself even while running from/fighting enemies sometimes making encounters feel even more scripted than they otherwise would be, the near suspension of disbelief breaking stealth, that special attack against the human with the hammer that caused a short cutscene...if it does that every time would be annoying in breaking up combat flow.

I liked the grapple hook and glider best from the gameplay shown, mid-battle traversal can be exhilarating to use and tactical for positioning in practice.

Decent visuals. Overall, not super impressed and kind of got what I expected considering its a cross gen game. Really sad, because its being held back by that for obvious reasons.

Wasn't a huge fan of the first game, got all trophies and dlc as well and enjoyed it for what it was. Aloy is not a very interesting character and the story was meh. Background lore was far more interesting than the story itself. Game was technically impressive and had good tech. Glad too see much better melee combat and more cool dino designs such as these raptor looking things. Either way, will play and 100% but after that probably never play again just like the first game.

They need to offer a 60fps mode even if they have to downgrade res down to 1080p
All PS5 exclusives have had 60 fps modes at launch. Demon Souls, Returnal and Astrobot have 60 fps modes by default.

Ratchet and Miles have 60 fps performance modes available. I said this in the other thread, but there is really nothing stopping them from downscaling the resolution to get 60 fps. the zen 2 architecture does not have the same bottlenecks as the jaguar which prevented 60 fps modes in several games on the Pro like Uncharted 4, ghost and tlou2.

If the pixel budget of the game is 4k 30 fps, you can easily get it to run at 1440p 60 fps. if its 4kcb 30 fps, you can easily get it to run at 1080p 60 fps.

When the enemy says "you think you can hurt me?" then it triggers that badass little scene where she boosts her weapon's power and then is like "yea, I do" is so fucking badass!

I'm trying to replace the gifs in the OP but I get the same error, the site don't want to accept it

I'm trying with this one, is there something wrong with the link:
.gifv

Sorry to bother but I would love to post some nice quality gifs ^^

Mostly the art style, you can notice some of the "jank" if you pay attention (or even just by watching it normally).
Stuff like noticeable pop-ins, LOD loading in right in from of the character, low-geometry water (this one really stood-out for me), some flickering in light and fog effects, obvious use of 2D sprites for smoke effects, very simplistic sand deformation, ambient occlusion shadows disappearing when it gets closer to the borders of the screen (also very noticeable), debris disappearing right after they're destroyed, hair clipping, etc.

Honestly i think at least some of this will be "fixed" for release, if only for the ps5 version. My guess is that this gameplay showcase was sort of rushed and they're using an early port of a ps4 build on the ps5. Would also explain why its running at 30 fps since i see no reason why the ps5 wouldn't be able to run this at 60 considering all the noticeable compromises they made. Well, could just be the 4k, though apparently its upscaled so i don't think thats the case.

Ah yeah, I thought I could get the .mp4 quality directly here but no. Your gif is so clean I'm jealous

Baby Reaction GIF
how are you capturing it? i use gifcam which is very easy to use. i do see artifacts in your gif which only show up in my gifv versions.

try to use gifcam and make sure to select 30 fps. you will be limited to 2-3 second gifs and small window sizes, but the quality will be higher.

Jez knows nothing.

Xbox has some really talented studios. even if they arent ready to show off gameplay, they can still come with some realtime trailers like sony did last year. im guessing MS is like a year behind sony first party but that doesnt mean they arent talented.
I posted it because he is "team xbox" and that crowd is pretty delusional :messenger_beaming: . Have yet to see an Xbox first-party game that reaches parity with Sony stuff

In these shots she is in complete shadow, but her arms and gear and hair are all very brightly lit. It's a deliberate art choice to make her really pop, even though it makes no sense when considering how light works giving it that CGI effect. It looks great standalone, and the skin, hair, and cloth shaders look great, but it is unnatural. I personally don't like it very much.
This is due to the limitations of a deferred renderer. Most games attach a light source to the character that is totally separate from the scene. That's why it looks fake. When hardware is powerful enough in the future, you'll see full on lighting computations with everything in the scene being lit by the same light sources. In short, we need to get away from deferred rendering and embrace full on forward rendering.

Good catch.

Hand to Hand combat in HZD is not good at all. I’m glad they expanded the combat system to make it more way more interesting. From what I saw it will be great this time.

Join Aloy in the Forbidden West, a deadly place full of new threats, each more mysterious than the last.

81b69a02d9469be08c2426117991d9f0.png

Aloy, more agile than ever, and a much mire imposing bestiary
Let's focus on this long sequence of gameplay that says a lot. As you can see, the heroine with the long, flamboyant hair has clearly gained in flexibility.
Now, Aloy can move more easily in the environment using its grappling hook or float in the air using a strange shield, two objects that will help us to escape the many hostile beasts that dot this world.

Yes, in addition to the peaceful animals made of flesh and blood, the robotic bestiary has also evolved with this second opus. Aloy will therefore be able to meet creatures ridden by ruthless bandits, but also larger robotic dinosaurs including sea monsters that will make short work of you.
Our heroine has also improved in melee combat, which already promises much more dynamic exchanges with human opponents.

Magnificent environments and vistas
As already announced, Horizon: Forbidden West will offer players a small tour of the west coast of the United States to cross on foot, or on the back of a robotic mount, three states: California, Utah and Nevada.
It will be an opportunity for players to discover many breathtaking environments. Unfortunately, these were not presented to us in detail, but several panoramas were nonetheless unveiled.

Just like in the first episode, therefore, we will be entitled to a multitude of different biomes ranging from the lush jungle, through the arid desert, through snow-covered areas or even by the relaxing and colorful coastline.
From there, it will be possible to freely explore magnificent aquatic environments full of dangers. Yes, in this second opus, players who thirst for adventure will be able to afford some scares by venturing into the seabed.

Ok, but when?
How long will we have to wait to get our hands on the future great creation of Guerrilla Games? Unfortunately, the studio did not let slip any information on this side.
We will therefore have to be content once again with a wave "second half of 2021". As a reminder, the open world game will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

More gif when Imgur will work properly

Game play looks the same minus the new grab and combo mechanic.

I actually really liked HZD, but after GOT I think I'm burned out on open world games.

Also, was that 30fps?

I'm not trying to get into anything, but it could be ray tracing? Her legs are in shadow, but there are god rays going across both scenes which might conceivably have lit her from the side..

.. i could be wrong though, just playing devil's advocate

This was their gameplay debut. It's a big deal.

They think the best way to showcase their game is with linear, hand holdy level design. That doesn't strike me as a vote of confidence for impressive open world design.

Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but I'm skeptical.

Lol. This isn’t some new IP with unproven mechanics. The first game was great and this not only maintains much of the old, there is clearly a bunch of traversal stuff happening here.

Thanks for being so concerned though.

Apologies for any offense taken, I do not mean to stir up racial division, I only want to say the graphics look very bad not in terms of technical detail but with regards to artistry/style

The graphics look amazing and the artistic direction is fine. I don’t know what you would hold up as a benchmark but it wouldn’t matter, you would be very wrong.

I went and looked at God of War, TLOU 2, and Gears 5 and didn't notice this kind of look. They went into shadow properly and blended with bounce lights etc. Do you know what rendering they use?

Definitely not ray tracing. It's always like this no matter if she is in shadow or on the beach. Her model lighting is almost always the same look everywhere in game

Since Far Cry 6 leaked today thanks to a french youtuber lol i figured id make some comparisons. it looks good and a lot of fun to play but very last gen. especially in urban areas.

Dying Light 2 was also re-revealed today and it also looks good but last gen. i dont know what GG is doing tbh. they must be downporting this on PS4 separately.

All of them use deferred renderer. Resident evil series attached a light source to the characters too. Some do it, some do not. I can load up the PC version of HZD and check that. I wouldn't be too bothered by it. It might not even be there in the final game and they just might have needed that to make her stand out from the environment.

Yup. No RT. Same tech as before.

This looked fantastic, I really liked the first game and the story it told. Hopefully they lean into a 60fps mode as well because it's always going to look good no matter the resolution at this point but 60fps on these types of games is such a stunning upgrade they'd be crazy not to include that.
