Hypothetically, if you wanted to introduce games to someone who's never played them before, you would naturally start with personal favourites.

I started thinking: are there any games that, no matter who you ask in the gaming community, would be considered the very best in their genre?
And that led to "what gaming statements are universally accepted as true?"

Statements like "Doom, Super Mario 64 and GTA were all influential in their respective genres" "Call of duty usually has good fps gunplay" "There is more creativity in the indie space" and so on.

Horse armor wasn't worth the price.

Oh man you should have been there at the time. This is how I felt:

In retrospect, with everything that's come since this is now easy for everyone to agree upon but as with everything at the time it had its fair share of defenders.

Games are all what matters.

Bo we all know not everyone agrees on that anymore unfortunately.

Everyone will agree with the following;

"The Wii U is underrated"
"BOTW is a Wii U game"
"Resident Evil 4 is a bad Resident Evil game"
"Sony always wins"
"If the Devil gon' be cryin' all the time, let his bitch ass go to the xbox 360" (see the aforementioned statement of truth)

last but not least.....

Rockstar needs to f***ing announce and release GTA VI already! It’s been almost 8 years now, come the f*** on.

Sony will sell more PS5s this gen than Microsoft its Series Xs.

Nintendo games are primarily aimed at younger audiences and women.

Capcom is best it has ever been right now.

Gran Turismo 7 won’t release this year 😢

Don’t ever do what CDPR did with Cyberpunk.

Some parts of the industry are creatively bankrupt.

Actually, if I was introducing someone to gaming, particularly if they are older (20+), I would have them play Pong then move up through the generations. Seriously. Something like Grand Theft Auto or God of War would utterly intimidate them if they played it right off of the bat. Watch this for reference:

This can't be real???
Oh, you sweet summer child.

Counter: Much better to start from the 90s. Or focus on the 90s anyway.

While I agree that we sometimes underestimate just how difficult modern controls are for the uninitiated, I don't think you have to go that far back. If you went Pong - Spacewar - Tetris- Mario Bros - Contra - Metal Gear - Street Fighter, sure they would be introduced to contemporary gaming, but you don't have to go that way.

Why not? Because I believe we all sucked at games(regardless of the difficulty) when we were younger, and we got better through brute force. The complexity of games didn't really matter, we were bad at them(If you say you weren't, you're lying and I'll fight you).

Might take longer for people who are older, but going through a tour of gaming generations with someone (while bloody cool) isn't really necessary.
Modern controls were decided in the 90s/00s for most things. And interface/mechanics knowledge we already have will be acquired once you play enough of anything.

In the vid, Raz's girlfriend has the same major issue almost everyone who tries modern games does. Camera maneuvering + movement is weird (on controllers a little more than on m+k) for beginners.
All the gaming shorthand we've already imbibed (intractables vs props, knowing whether we're following objectives vs heading in the wrong direction) has to be acquired by playing several games, I don't think there's any other way.
