These two games were the biggest rpgs of the late 90's, whether you owned them or skipped them, people were talking about them everywhere, and their impact could be felt whether either added much to the genre or not. They had mind share that other rpgs of the time just couldn't pull off, reaching beyond gaming.
Both games are also among the highest rated rpgs of 5th gen, with Diablo receiving a 94% and Final Fantasy VII receiving a 92% on Metacritic. What's crazier is both were released within a year of each other giving gamers two big hits to play.
I rarely hear these two giants of the genre compared though. If you're going to strangely compare Persona to Skyrim I think you'll have less contrast by comparing FFVII and Diablo, both the biggest rpgs of the late 90's.
