I find it odd as well, and pretty much a non argument. There is so much to choose from today compared to “The good old times”. With a little bit of research you can find games you like that are just as good, if not better, than the games you grew up with.
Not only that, it’s easier than ever to play games from the past if that’s what you like.
when I grew up, it was harder to find games you would like, and you were always taking a chance. The investment to risk ratio is almost non existent now with how accessible games are, and how easy it is to find information on them.
Ive seen some of my favorite developers either got in a direction I don’t care for (Squarsoft/Square Enix), or just slowly devolve into mediocrity (BioWare, Blizzard). But that’s just evolution, and other developers are picking up where they left off and making great games.
So yeah, I don’t really get it. We’re lucky to have so many options in my opinion. If a franchise goes in a direction you don’t like, or if “Triple A” development is something you don’t like, there’s plenty of other options.
