[DF] Cross-Gen Face-Off: Xbox Series S vs SSD-Enhanced Xbox One X

I had a One X, but sold it and got a Series X.

But if I still had it and was deciding whether to keep it, or sell it for get an S, I'd keep the One X.

Ya, Series S has more 60 fps modes and can have RT and faster SSD speeds, but One X seems to have better resolution, a 1 TB drive, and I have 4k movies which One X can run. I don't have a dedicated 4k player and have zero interest buying one.

I heard him say the low 50's.
I could be mistaken.
Care to show me?

You claim to play both but two times(3 if we count the other DF employee tweet) DF has chosen the One X version.
timestamp 10:17 "fps fluctuates from 45-60 in the open world." Both versions have pros and cons. At worst it's a wash.

Unless i watched a different video, the XSS version is near flawless 60fps, with a few dops into the high 50's, while the OneX version is almost constantly in the 50's, and drops way lower in fights.

Look its simple with OneX vs XSS. If you are happy with 30fps, go with OneX. If framerate is king and you want 60fps in most games, go with XSS.

It really is that simple.
OneX was designed to run XB1 games at a higher resolution, and the XSS was designed to run XSX games at a lower resolution.
Both machines pretty much do exactly what they were designed to do.
Both drop... One version has almost a generation better visuals(according to DF)

That is the older video which is not what I asked for.
The CURRENT video and version of the game drops to the 50's as I posted above from the current video.

Which was said TWO times.

Done with this convo.
Got the expected denial/spins from same usual suspects and the other coward who won't quote me.
There is no spin from me, i have the game on PC.
I'm just saying that frmaerate is king for me, so the XSS version is best.
If both versions were locked 60fps then obviously i'd go with the OneX as its higher resolution.

Visually x1x will win, since it can do 4k. While xss will win in fps mode.

For a game like Halo, you need speed, and fps, which x1x is unable to do like the xss.

MS clearly focused on last gen.
Still, my PC can't run the game perfectly, despite being able to run cyberpunk2077.:messenger_unamused:

Your posts I am not referring to.
I agree with frame rate being king BUT... when one drops to the high 50's and looks almost a generation worse vs one that drops to the low 50's and looks almost a generation better.... I am going with the latter.
Why do we buy new machines? Just for better fps or a mix of improved visuals AND better fps.

Series S doesn't drop frames, in either mode, they say and show as much in the new video as well.

The only 'issue' Series S has is frame pacing issues in the 30 FPS mode, which every console with a 30 FPS mode has.

It sticks to both its 30 and 60 FPS targets in either mode pretty well. One X has a much higher rendering resolution but it drops a lot of frames in the Performance mode.

Not as significant as the visual difference.

It does watch the video again.

Well like you said, its down to preference. The vid says that the XSS version is near locked 60fps, with the odd dip to 59fps. The OneX version drops into the 50's constantly, which will produce judder.
On PC i cant do with judder, and will sometimes lock a game to 30fps as oppose to a game in the 50-60fps range, just for the consistancy (Cyberpunk a prime example).
Thats just me though.

"There's the occasional dropped frame or two, or the momentary hitch"

The worst I could see in the video was 58~ which could be anything, a streaming, loading asset hitch etc.

The point being Series S is virtually locked to 60 FPS 99.99% of the time.

edit: I think the further updates will make Series S even better, as the Beta had a 120hz mode which the final game doesn't have. There is capability to run 120hz on it. Similarly, all facial animations are 30hz in the final game, they were 60 FPS in the beta and early game play captures.

These things will be addressed with patches.

Question: if/when MS does a mid-gen console refresh, would they put the Series S on the short bus like the original Xbox One?

They didn't do that, though.
They stopped selling it (in favor of the S), but all games had to be developed for it. Microsoft wouldn't have certified the game if it somehow didn't work on the launch unit.
Here (@3:59)is footage of Playground's testing lab when they were developing Forza Horizon 5. They don't even have the S included. All development testing was done on the original 2013 model.
Microsoft isn't going to abandon the Series S. Although third parties might have a different opinion.

I doubt third parties are going to drop S support when its currently matching and exceeding XSX sales in most places (although i expect XSX to takeover if the stock problems ever get sorted).
Plus when a simple resolution drop to around the 1080p range is enough to get the games running on the S.

Its for a shooter game.
This isn't SP game, where you have to fight dumb AI.

For shooter games, you need to have good fps.

For a game like Halo infinite, you need FPs, more than performance mode.

I am a pc gamer, and FPS is what I need for my games.

Couldn't get much clearer.

Unsurprising you're getting denials and spin when looking at the user's you are arguing with. They have been known to fabricate evidence and twist facts beyond all recognition.

So wouldn't expect anything less from those sad and deluded trolls.

I hope you're not including me in that nonsense at the bottom. And if you are then i hope you have receipts.
This is all subjective at the end of the day. I'll always chose a consistent framerate over resolution every time, its the main reason why i still play at 1080p on PC, so i can get 60fps in most games.
I'm not going to apologize for that, Jesus.

That's why I called em on on the bs in this thread.

Updates can make both better but regardless DF chose the Xbox One X version THREE times if we count the tweet.

Ok fellaz done with this convo.

I wasn't, no.

From brief exchanges that I've had with you, you seem a decent poster. Many tiers above the users that I had been referring to.

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, but for the frame rate purists SS is the better choice, especially if it adds the 120hz mode back again. Something I doubt the One X would be capable of at all.

DF didn't chose the One X version, they said this,

"In effect, I'd strongly recommend Xbox One X at minimum"

MINIMUM being the important word, that is the lowest way they would suggest playing the game, therefore inferior to the experience on both Series consoles.

Framerate is king in shooters especially online and always will be.

My opinion is besides the point... the thread is about DF's findings and they chose the One X.(THREE TIMES)

One X really struggles in big battles, makes it difficult when you're in a tight situation, also online the slowdown can make the difference between winning and losing a fight if it happens at the wrong time, you would basically be handicapping yourself if you had the choice to play with a better framerate that's more consistent.

Regardless the One X is now a discontinued machine with from what I can see has no further first party games coming as MS seems to really believe in generations and has moved on.

Series S has years in front of it starting with STALKER and Starfield this year, the choice is very simple.
