Where do we go from here PlayStation Nation?

First party alone is enough. Nintendo has literally proved that for decades. What are you talking about?
Sorry, but you are mistaken.

It's all about tastes in the end. Xbox could have all the Call of Duty in the world, they still don't have Final Fantasy so why should I care?

On a more serious note, we all know Xbox has had a hard time since the launch of Xbox one but they are doing better and them doing better means more competition and more competitions means better for us.

That's all I need. I'm in the Sony camp in my heart but I want everyone to do well.

I know but that road just leads to where the TV/movie industry is right now, and it isn't something I am interested in.

I mean a future where Sony buys EA and you have to buy a Playstation to play FIFA, and Microsoft owns Activision and you need to own an Xbox to play COD, is just stupid, and I don't even play either of those games (well, I was addicted to Warzone for a year, but...). I'll just sit here and continue to play my fan-translated SNES and PSX games instead.

Yeah, this consolidation era sucks ass but nothing Sony can do about it. Microsoft could stop here and Sony would be fine, but they need to assume that any of these big third party players can be swooped up at any time. Not just by Microsoft, but Amazon, Apple and Google are also looming threats.

I don't think they need to outright buy multibillion $ companies, but if they lose all the big players, like Ubisoft, EA and TakeTwo, they're going to need at least double or triple the amount of exclusives they're releasing right now to even justify being in the hardware space.

It'd be great to see them build that many studios up over time, but I don't think they have the time anymore.
eh. Nintendo has survived what two decades without CoD, Elder Scrolls and GTA? Sony will be fine as long as they realize that their main business is consoles. Not chasing the PC audience for a few million dollars. Learn from Nitnendo. Focus on first party and creating value in your IPs. Sony was actually doing this up until a few years ago. They had patiently built up their studios and were finally seeing them break the 20 million barrier but they threw it all away with cross gen games and PC ports. Now the brand is diluted unlike Nintendo.

There is a reason why Nintendo led consoles sales in their 5th year while MS and Sony couldnt even outsell them in their first full year.

Yeah, the worst has yet to come. This isnt over. There will be bidding wars in the next couple of days and no one will come out stronger. If Sony wins the bidding war, they will be in debt and that will cost them in the budget for PS division. If MS wins, they wouldve consolidated the market even more, but at least xbox owners might get more gamepass value. If Apple or Google win, we are all fucked.

Sony doesn't have anywhere near the first party clout that Nintendo does. Not even close. They will never be Nintendo.
Compare Sony today to where they were in 2010 and compare where they were in 2010 to where they were in 2000.

Sony probably has the most high quality studios under its belt at the moment. Do they need to expand and diversify, absolutely, but it's a stretch to say they aren't close to Nintendo. In many ways they are ahead of Nintendo, obviously just not in all ways.

If I'm Sony, I'm trying to buy Bungie and maybe From Software (KADAKOWA) by the close of business today. Obviously not that quickly, but you get my drift. These would be measured responses that largely outweigh Microsoft's decision to spend big on a publisher that doesn't have one IP on the upswing.

This is a pretty dramatic take.

No doubt this a big move, but they just spent 10B and are still being outsold dramatically worldwide. People should relax and see what happens next.

The thing I take from this is Microsoft is serious about Xbox, which is a good thing and why I didn't support them after the 360.

What the fuck is up with this sub? Playstation Nation is fine, relax. lol jesus no one died.

Lmao exactly my thoughts.

The only blow this deals to Sony is a possible lack of Call of Duty (which has been in decline anyway).

This literally makes zero difference to those of us to who don’t play such games anyway.

I don't play any Activision games except for D2R, which is gonna last another 20 years I hope. Why the hell should I worry?

Ubisoft, EA and Activison have no games for me. They haven't had for ages.

I'm starting to think now that they should let the Bethesda stuff go multiplat, because of the pure volume of heavy hitters they can put on Gamepass, the question for consumers will be "do I buy this $60 game on playstation or do I pay $15 a month and get this + lots of other AAA on Gamepass?" So in that situation it almost doesn't matter of MS let's Bethesday go multiplat, the Gamepass value is too good to pass up.

Yea, I dunno.

I'm definitely not a fanboy of anything but Playstation is my preferred platform.

It's definitely a big deal for MS to own Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard but it doesn't affect me in the slightest. The only Bethesda game I want to play is Skyrim VR and that's available still. I've never been a fan of COD and honestly couldn't tell you what else Activision puts out. I think the last game of theirs I bought was Singularity on the PS3, lol.

Pretty wild stuff all the same. As others have mentioned, the kill shot for me would be MS buying Capcom, man that would suck, lol. I'd buy an XBOX for it but I'd prefer to just stick with Playstation for my RE needs. I don't need two consoles, even though the Series X is tempting.

I don't do the console war stuff as I own ps5/pc/oculus/series x/switch/switch oled and soon a steamdeck lol....But nah bro this is bigger than big.

It hurts them, but if you're thinking that them losing COD will kill their service.... then you're in denial.

Before Overwatch got cross play, I never had issues finding matches on PS4. The PS4 was the highest selling console of last gen and Overwatch was a huge seller, so it would be ludicrous to claim people weren’t playing the game on it,
I never claimed that people weren't playing Overwatch on PS4, I'm claiming that people don't play the game as much as they used to.

Go big on eco systems and invest. Content will and always will be KING. Sony has some of the best in the industry.

1. Buy Capcom
2. Expand your hardware offerings into new segments (PS portable - able to play all ps5 games at lower settings etc)
3. Continue to open new studios

go check out cod sales numbers
Activision's yearly revenue last year was $8 billion. This move will take them 9 years to even out. more seeing as how PS is the dominant platform and I doubt they spent $70 billion to continue publishing these games on PS consoles.

But I wasnt talking about revenue or sales figures anyway. If you read the whole quote, it's about providing more value/games to xbox gamers. This will result in a net total of zero new games on xbox consoles.

Go walk up to a stranger on the street and ask them if they've heard of Kratos or Nathan Drake. Then ask him if he's heard of Mario or Donkey Kong or Zelda. That's the difference.

I hope it doesn't, I got a PS5 in my living room and in my studio.

They’re actually averaging 5 million players per month which is strong for a game that hasn’t had a major update since April 2020 (the most recent hero Echo was released).

Notice you went for main characters of the game and then you said Zelda instead of Link.

Those franchises have been around for longer, so it would make sense that they're more recognizable.

Uncharted is about to get a movie and we'll see how that will do, but Sony's success with new IP has been stronger than Nintendo's lately.

It's not those specific IPs that are the problem here (for me at least), it's what this might mean if MS just keeps going like this. There won't be a PlayStation by the end of it, they can't survive on just their own first party games.

Nintendo does. And quite well.

Resurrect Killzone, Resistance and Socom.
Keep building quality games.
Hope MS doesn't buy EA.
Try and own a niche (maybe JRPGs) so maybe try and buy SEGA and/or Square (if MS hasn't already done so 🤷‍♂️ )

Man I fucking hope this will cause them to wake up and stop making so many remakes and remasters

Dude they will still do well . They still have the bigger brand , a top draw first party which always helps. Personally I think Call of Duty will remain on PlayStation for a while yet. Overwatch 2 also.

As much as I like Xbox I don’t care for some of the acquisitions because a lot of the offerings are first person games, which I don’t like too much and wish they had some more revered and cinematic offerings like Sony does.

People need to calm down a bit.

All that matters is the games, not the publishers they come from. Sony will do fine if they make good games.

Respectfully, this acquisition does "change the game" This is a question of where the industry is headed and if gamers prefer games as a service vs games as a product. Traditionally, Sony and Nintendo have structured their biggest IPs as product. Microsoft's game pass initiative lends itself more to service type games. Neither is bad, but I personally stick to story driven single player games, which is why I chose to purchase a PS5.

The way I see it, Sony and Nintendo should merge if they want to maintain their business model for the long-term. Sony is not going to win an acquisition war against Microsoft

Let’s not underestimate how big of a deal it is to possibly have Call of Duty as a exclusive lol

That’s like the best selling game on both consoles. This deal is insane so the reaction is understandable ….70 billion… this is mind blowing news
Yep. If you cant have a meltdown over this news then when can you meltdown? This is the biggest gaming acquisition of all time.

I think everyone should get a pass today lmao. Let them celebrate/gloat/cry in peace.

Definitely not. As they showed with the GameCube and Wii U (and also the Wii after the first few years). The Switch is not the amazing success it is because people NEED those Nintendo 1st party games, but because of what the Switch itself is. The Wii U had a strong 1st party lineup (stronger than the Switch in some ways - and several of the best Switch games are ports from the Wii U), and it was a huge failure.

You shouldnt.

And most gamers shouldnt either since MS games also release on PC.

Calm ye. Microsoft will treat most of these franchises like Minecraft and keep them available to all, especially Call of Duty.

Back when the Bethesda deal came in I thought they'd more than likely keep the big releases on Playstation as well. That didn't happen, and suggests a strategy that's pretty damn cuth throat... so no, I don't expect to see CoD on Playstation after 2022.
