Breaking: Microsoft to acquire Activision-Blizzard in near 70$ billion deal

I seriously don't understand this. People said the exact fucking thing about Starfield and Elder Scrolls. Saying "MS was leaving money on the table" not releasing it on PS5. It's the final form of port begging.
I do. COD is an absolute juggernaut so comparing that to Starfield or Elder Scrolls means nothing. This is something I could see happening. Most casual gamers that buy COD every year and not much else are going to be fucking pissed they can't play on PlayStation. Sony may want to play ball but we'll see. Could end up being a dagger through the heart if Xbox slams the door on Sony with COD.

If they take sales from Sony, it's not money left on the table - that's what people don't get. MS aren't looking at the next 12 months, they're looking at entirely burning Sony out of the market over the next decade.

This was probably Phil Spencer's reaction to Sony buying up a bunch of Square Enix exclusives.

It seems every time Sony goes out and pays a publisher to keep their games off Xbox Phil retaliates by buying up a publisher.

Last time Sony bought a couple of Bethesda exclusives a company that had long Xbox ties and this time Sony bought up SE exclusives.

That's a bullshit argument. For the last few years Sony has had an exclusivity deal in place that locked Xbox and PC owners out of game modes in CoD. So by that logic it's perfectly fine for a deal with Sony to force people on Xbox and PC to pay full price for an incomplete version of CoD.

Those casuals can buy an Xbox if they seriously have to have their CoD fix every year, and it's a good thing MS has a $299 option for them.

Eh TBF Sega mostly crushed themselves that generation; they were way too reactionary, divided, and tried taking on a company with over 10x their money and resources head-on.

There was only one way that was going to end, sadly. But at least they're still making some kick-ass games (quite a few in fact).

Only issue here is that there's only so much Sony can do spending-wise to make that level of a purchase without taking out loans or mixing it up with stocks & cash (or maybe stock, cash & loans). At some point they just simply can't compete at that level; this MS/ACTI move is outside of their territory (without potentially jeopardizing their entire company financially, anyway).

Sony has to play to their strengths. Nintendo's not out reacting by making a ton of acquisitions, are they? And they're even smaller than Sony. If a company like Nintendo can carve enough of a niche to do their own thing, why can't Sony? If Sony "have" to respond to MS on this, then doesn't that just mean they don't have enough of an identity to play to their own strengths? Expecting a sudden major response from them would be too reactionary for them IMHO.

Again, Sony'll be fine. I'm sure they'll acquire a few other studios, but compared to companies like Microsoft buying power is not one of their major strengths. It's their narrative-driven single-player style games and their film/television properties, and how they can integrate them together. They also have it good right now with arguably the #1 superhero IP in film with Spiderman (sorry MCU fans), and look like they're building up some kind of shared universe between Spiderman & Marvel films/shows and their 1P superhero games.
Nintendo has Pokemon and Mario to always lean on. Gaming is their company but they have golden geese that will always be there and that absolutely massive. Sony as much as I love their stuff and it's primarily what I play don't have anything on that level and losing casual consumers who would normally buy cod and PS+ subs is gonna take away so much profit

If you can stomach the prices you can always get a gaming PC instead.
I mean true, but if he’s struggling to spend £250 or £450 on an Xbox presumably because it’s a Microsoft product I fail to see how spending over a grand on a Windows 11 PC in order to give Microsoft money to play their games is any better.

Sony will be fine just like Nintendo is now.

I doubt Sony is going anywhere. LOL

MS building their GP library does not equal destroying Sony. Probably will make MS more competitive though.
Sony's other businesses aren't there to sustain PS. If PS wilts they will downsize accordingly, but as I said MS are in this to burn Sony out of the market and that's why they make 70bn acquisitions without worrying about "money left on the table", how likely they are to succeed is a personal opinion I am merely explaining this move is part of the long game.

I think people get confused with Microsoft not giving hardware numbers out anymore (since 2014), and the heavy push of Gamepass, meaning some people think they dont care about hardware sales anymore. Thing with that Phil himself said that hardware sales are very important to Microsoft because Gamepass needs hardware. Gamepass is a downloadable games service, and store front, its not a streaming only service. So yes Microsoft do care about hardware sales, and the likes of Starfield, Elder scrolls, Fallout, and of course COD are def system sellers.

I will be surprised if COD stays multiplatform after any current deals end. I'd say COD 2023 will be Xbox/PC only, assuming any deal isnt already in place.

Nintendo repositioned toward completely different segments, so if that means fine then I guess the question is which segments do you think Sony would reposition towards when squeezed? What if Sony have to COMPETE with Nintendo?

That's a good point, but don't forget about Spiderman. Gaming-wise they're associated with Sony and in terms of film & television they practically own the IP as well (Disney/Marvel only get 25% of the profits there).

They may not own the comics but the comics market as a whole has been dying horribly these days aside from one-off hits like that recent new Spawn #1 comic.

Not only can they, they 100% will. Some people really overvalue brand loyalty; the vast majority of the gaming market is nothing like radicalized console war Twitter Spaces.

Big news, i dont particularly care for Activision games, but dayum that will be a money making machine. Call of Duty sales alone will boost Gamepass by huge margin.

Sony still makes amazing 1st party games that are different than what other studios release.

They will still have Spiderman, Wolverine, Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon, GT8, etc.

There are enough customers in the world for all the 1st party Corps to have success.

I would not be surprised if Sony called an emergency meeting to assure shareholders. 70% & more of the cod fanbase comes from PlayStation. That is a LOT of revenue and sales PlayStation is missing out on. There's a reason why they always go in marketing with cod. They're truly in trouble. I think an EA buyout that makes fifa an Xbox game would single handily kill PlayStation forever.

Exclusivity deals on game modes that people don't kick dirt about isn't the same as the game not being on the platform at all. Microsoft will be leaving money on the table if they shut out Sony. Pure and simple. Question is if Microsoft wants to shut the door entirely, or only have COD be the official Microsoft game on PlayStation (besides Minecraft I think).

Are you going to cry? Just get a PC
you talk like you gain a lot with this move, you xbox user you get the same games that every year comes to xbox nothing more.
this is the worse that could happen in this industry, buying big publishers with franchises that could be played on any platform.
You should be happy if microsoft had invested all this money to buy, create and help grow small studios and help create new games for your xboxs along all this years, but no you get the same games, microsoft is just restricting this games on other consoles

He gets the same games, but he gets them day 1 on Game Pass.

Not only that, but MS now owns a lot of IPs that weren't being used by Activision, which could actually mean having more games.

Fifa would be the real kliller imo. Although i really dont think microsoft and Sony are console warriors like many on here. In fact i bet Phil and Jim meet for a coffee everytime they are in the same city lol.

Getting Fifa along with COD, well that would be a massive thing to overcome with the masses. Even if Sony bought GTA, i dont think it would help that much due to GTA not being a yearly franchise.

There are, but there aren't enough to sustain the scales currently in play - Sony will cut their cloth accordingly. When their share drops, they naturally will have less to invest.

in a way or in another Microsoft will make it clear and loud for everyone that who doesn't play from Xbox or Microsoft Windows is a second class citizen. you can bet on it. It mean at best that competing platforms like PlayStation won't see probably special modes or dlc or enhancements . At worst (which is what I think will happen) Cod's main line will be exclusive to Xbox, Microsoft Windows PC and Gamepass. There isn't a reality when a 70b deal leave the status Quo for your direct market rival (in the console space) when the latter has continually pulled the rope trying to starve you by using his market share with third party games

Is Sony leaving money on the table by not releasing God of War on the Xbox? They have a great PC port that would run amazingly on the Series X.
Way to be reductive. Call of Duty, is literally, the best selling game year after year. Even on a downward trend it's still number one. The vast majority of the player base is on PlayStation. That's called leaving money on the table. I suppose your example of God of War would make a lot more sense if it came out every year selling tens of millions of copies every time...

Whoa. I guess now was a good time to sell.

Microsoft owning WoW, CoD, and Diablo. Fucking madness. This is probably the biggest gaming news of the past five or so years right?

Edit: Ohhh my God Master Chief in Overwatch! The Starcraft guy in Overwatch. Fucking Arthas in Overwatch! I'd actually play Overwatch again for that.

OK I am geeking out at the possibilities

I'm sure that Microsoft has run the numbers. It may or may not be leaving money on the table. If they bring in more people to Xbox and Game Pass it could easily make up for the loss on Playstation. The Xbox used to be the go-to console for Call of Duty back in the Xbox 360 days. Then Sony pulled the exclusivity card and people moved to PS. So the same thing could happen here where a ton of people move off PS to Xbox. I don't see COD being on PS anymore. That casual audience will move to Xbox.

Probably true. Things will get more expensive as soon as there are two services looking for content.
Expensive for Sony yes. A lot of strong annualized content will be unavailable for Sony to put on their service now.

The price has gone up in publishers eyes. This is going to be a war of attrition.

If Microsoft manages to get one more big publisher like EA, Ubisoft or Take Two, it will effectively cripple Sony's attempts without first party exclusives (this move is already had enough). I think it would be tough getting that past regulators though.

You don't buy Take Two for GTA. GTA is a dormant franchise. There hasn't been a mainline GTA release since 2013 and no new GTA for an entire console generation.

You buy Take Two for NBA2K. In the US that's bigger than FIFA on the PS4/PS5.

If Microsoft allows COD on PlayStation, I could see them keeping DLC locked for a certain time period on Xbox before it hits Sony's platform. I don't agree on the second class citizen thing though.

Huge move from MS. I'm not particularly interested on those games but yes this will be a great push for game pass as CoD moves crazy numbers

Sony is not going anywhere though. I think people underestimates how big and influential is the Playstation brand in most of the world.

The real implications of this are the inevitable subscription content wars. This significantly devalues the value proposition of any competing service.
I was saying something similar to this in another thread but that war may have already ended before it could even get started. Let's see how this goes.

Gotta love these false equivalency crocodile tears

“Oh, this game was exclusive for a year” is somehow the same as buying over 80B in the largest gaming publishers in existence just so Sony can’t have them at all, forever

In terms of MP shooters, Apex and Fortnite and BF are still available on PS. Activision shooters are too, but MS does have the ability to cut them off if they wanted to.

Since Sony doesn't invest in MP games, MS cutting access to the key shooter franchises could literally leave it like this:

Xbox
- COD
- Overwatch
- Halo
- Gears
- Destiny
- Rainbow Six
- BF
- Fortnite
- Apex
- PUBG

PS
- Destiny
- Rainbow Six
- BF
- Fortnite
- Apex
- PUBG

Oh Sony has to strike soon to make that play. For one they won't be making nearly as much in a couple years time if they do nothing. For two they will lose the market leader software sales. If they wanna continue to be home to any casual gamers who like sports games and COD and GTA they will need to counter COD with a GTA sized bomb or several. It'll suck for everyone who used to play all those on one platform to have to choose but that's what MS decided to start 🤷‍♂️
Lol @MS starting this. I think I will relax by playing Final Fantasy 7 remastered on my Series X.

Oh wait.
