BREAKING: Sony is acquiring Bungie for 3.6b

I cringe every time I read about these dead and buried IPs. There’s even people talking about ressurecting Motorstorm. 🤯
There’s literally very few IPs that would ever be worth bringing back. Most of them are dead for a reason sadly. Destiny is a bigger IP than Resistance, Killzone and SOCOM combined - why would they chuck Destiny in the bin to work on a dead IP that was never huge in the first place? Makes no sense apart from to satisfy a nostalgia boner.

(Hahaha I got my Perfect Dark reboot tho so fuck tha po’lice)

Microsofts main goal is Gamepass, and growing it. To do that you need hardware sales as Gamepass is a game download service. Sony IMO will never allow Gamepass on Playstation as it would just be too bad of a look. So Microsoft need Xbox sales, and COD being Xbox console exclusive will deliver that in droves.

Agreed. But it wouldn't surprise me if MS did choose to leave CoD $70 on PS and pick around the edges more for exclusive content. "Free" vs. $70 is a compelling advantage alone, plus, once you get past the existing Sony contracts it won't be Xbox missing modes and DLC content. Some of these acquisitions are about protecting content vs. 100% exclusives, IMO. Xbox can never lose CoD now, and should things move in a more streaming focused future, MS's service will have CoD when no others would.

With that said though, Activision is painting a picture that definitely leaves room for exclusives. Especially after Activision responded with a list of specific titles rather than a blanket statement when questioned about the future of CoD.

Both COD and Bungies next game will be pc and respective platform exclusive. Once one is announced exclusive the other will just shrug their shoulders and reciprocate.
Is almost as if you are willfully ignoring what is written in plain text for all to see.

What part of this are you struggling with?

Q. Bungie has future games in development, will they now become PlayStation exclusives?
No. We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games. We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to drive one, unified Bungie community.

I like this from Sony, going straight were Microsoft are too scared to.

Buying someone to complete their own portfolio, not to remove it from somewhere else.

Destiny is that HUGE!
You are wasting your time. Facts is a language not many around here speak, let alone understand.

You also don't understand that they are owned by Sony now, the reason for the MS fallout was that MS wanted them to just make Halo and they did not.

MS still owned them, the only threat they could make was everyone quitting or making their own studio.

Sony could still give them creative freedom, and still say ya know what, make what you want but its no on MS platforms.

you cannot deny, no matter what they say about being independent, they are OWNED by Sony and are too big to do what they did in 2007 when they threatened MS to quit if they didn't let them break off on their own. It's rare that EVER happens, wake up.
Ok, so you have no idea what you're talking about and have flown off on a tangent now that I've made that painfully clear. I won't reply again. Best of luck friend.

Go Go Neo Rangers!
I expect more games from Sony to be GaaS going forward. Will balance out their single player push and they now have the OG GaaS expertise.

It's not possible to play it through Battle.net at all anymore. Steam is the ONLY PC launcher for it now.
So these SteamDB numbers are not reliable with Bungie’s API data… or they track different things (daily activity is different from concurrent players).

The point is there is over 800k guys playing Destiny every day… from these around 35% is from PC… 25% Xbox and 40% PS.

Not PlayStation exclusive could easily mean PlayStation & PC and a cloud solution (they’ve still got an Azure deal, right?)

How so? Steam is the ONLY way to play the game on PC. It no longer exists on Battle.net, you had to migrate your purchase to Steam when Bungie split from Activision.

There's no other way to play Destiny on the PC than on Steam.

It was launched late on Steam.
The original launcher is Battle.net.

In any case I don’t know how that Steam DB works because around 30% of activity are PC users.

As long as there is one launcher, it should be okay.

There seems to be some question marks about the stats either steamdb or warmind.io, I don't know if there is any way to clear it up. Steamdb.info is using the steam api afaik (https://steamdb.info/faq/ )

Smart acquisition (albeit a bit pricey) for Sony, making sure they don't get shut out of FPS and multiplayer game market so people continue subscribing to PS+. The way they worded it sounds like it'll be multiplatform for a long time but I don't know how much I believe it beyond Destiny 2 and any existing games in development.

That being said, for me personally, this doesn't really move the needle for me, Bungie is no longer the studio that made Halo, and I was not really a fan of either Destiny 1 or 2. I hope they're able to fix their issues (maybe Sony can improve their story and narrative in future games) and I think they do have the potential to make a great game again, but this acquisition doesn't make me more or less interested in buying Playstation, and unless they release a new killer IP I don't know if this would make be subscribe to PS+ either.

Either way this seems like a move that will benefit Sony financially, but remains to be seen what kind of benefit current Playstation gamers should actually expect from this.

Warmind uses Bungie’s API.

And Steam API is not open anymore like in the past… SteamDB changed due that.

I wonder how people know whether this is a good or bad adquisition without knowing:

a) Bungie's financial statements
b) Bungie's future work
c) Additional IPs like game engines, business research (GaaS development), etc.

Only if you’re a gamer and want different IP’s for Playstation. With MS buying 3rd party IP’s id rather they buy a publisher with more playstattion centric IP

Sony and Microsoft are only in competition in their fanboys minds these days.

MS are no threat to Sony's console business.

Sony are no threat to Microsofts Software business.

In these enlightened times, it really wouldn't surprise me to see Bungie making another Halo game, that's multiplatform.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Uncharted on xbox either.

The times are changing.

I kinda get where ur going with this but...

There's only so many game dev companies in the world. If you are, say Meta, Amazon, Tencent, MS, or whoever and looking to add games, you better no wait to long.

Everyone knows theres competition right now and if you snooze you lose. Subscription services need content. Otherwise ur better off just outright buying the games as they release.

I'm assuming that most of these companies are thinking about sub services.

The amount of arm chair business executives in this thread is simply staggering. “Bad buy for Sony” “what a waste of money” “Jim Ryan does not know how to be a ceo” etc. Fuck out of here.

And they are still gonna keep Destiny multi-platform? I can understand Call of Duty because it generates so much money, but Destiny?

I assume this is because of the eventual Destiny 3, they want that as a massive exclusive PS5 franchise, I assume.

Your reading too much into it. They are keeping the already released game multiplat.

After that who knows.

I'd guess exclusive or PC + PS5.

Maybe they'll stroke a swap deal with Microsoft is another slight possibility

Honestly, this sounds really stupid.

They paid a studio more than half than the whole Activision?

Edit: Nvm I misremebered 7 billions instead of 70.

The real question is, does this really signal the acquisition war?

I feel like this one is just for the sake of an acquisition.

Its not a catalog of titles for gamepass, its not gonna be exclusive, it doesnt really do much other than add a studio and revenue to Sony.

I think we are gonna see almost all devs be bought, and bought shortly. This really is the beginning.

Any companies out there wanting ip needs to act swiftly or the shelves are gonna be bare. That the definition of buying pressure.
Serious question then, if that’s the case what have Sony spent £3b on?

I think the reasoning of this acquisition is:
-To own a top tier FPS IP and potentially more from them in the future
-To own a top tier big scale MP game and potentially more from them in the future
-To own a top tiear GaaS and potentially more from them in the future
-To own future potential top tier new FPS/MP/GaaS IPs, these folks are the ones who created Halo and Destiny
-To have a top FPS/MP/GaaS team to teach or support the other PS Studios teams on the related topics with related knowledge, tech and tools
-To secure that Bungie, Destiny and future Bungie new IPs aren't bought by people like MS who would potentially try to put them away from PS and Spartacus
-To add Bungie's related revenue and profit on top of thte current SIE division one
-To use Destiny and maybe future Bungie IPs on movies or tv shows
-Potential future metaverse a.k.a. PlayStation Home 2 shit

Reading some of the PR work being put out by Sony... they mention mulitmedia an oddly numerous number of times.

I think we are gonna see Sony go all in on the Destiny universe. Not just in gaming.

Phil's vague comments, and lies to the markets has you all twisted mate.

"We want the worlds we are creating to extend to anywhere people play games."

Pretty clear.

Unless people don't play games on xbox anymore?
Guess that means Destiny 3 is coming to Switch, Android and IOS then. You’ve convinced me. I repent, and won’t wank off to my Phil Spencer shrine with my green dildo up my arse tonight.

Game Pass is not just a game download service. It offers cloud gaming functionality as well. So no, they are not totally dependent on hardware sales.

But destiny is both free to play and staying multiplat. Not surprisingly as free to play has little reason to he exclusive.

I think it was important for them to own, and also have someone to teach their other teams:
-Top tier FPS games
-Top tier MP games with huge communities
-GaaS

Plus they make sure MS doesn't keep them away from PS.

Sony now doesn't only has Destiny and Bungie, they also have a 2nd party game coming from a studio of former Halo/Destiny/Apex Legend leads and another one from former COD BO leads.
So I’ve heard, from some former cod devs to. But idk, I’m huge halo fan bungie proved enough for me whatever they make will be successful, that 2nd party game will have to see.

Destiny 2 is not exactly free to play.

It has a base game that can be free played (old content)… and that means nothing.
The last activities and content are still locked for these that brought the game/expansion/seasonpass.

3.5b is less than 7 or 70 so it must be bad. Sony has a moron as a leader haven't you read the script? Sony as a corporation will declare bankruptcy after next year cod, haven't you read all this professional analyst in all this threads? Pick one of the 3 or a mix of the three and you have your answer

Ok fair play that Sony isn't forcing exclusivity. But can we not act like they've never money hatted anything. Especially when were talking about destiny lol.
