Metacritic publisher of the year award goes to....

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Activision has been releasing games for the MS DOS and Windows operating systems and even the MSX since the early 1980s. That is a long and fruitful relationship they have with MS.

I need to check if Stevivor's GT7 review has been finished yet, thanks for the heads-up.
By your logic, every single PC devs is having long and fruitful relationship with Microsoft.

Yes, that is absolutely right. A lot of Japanese developers as well, since the MSX was very popular in Japan.
i would not use the word long and fruitful.
But hey, if you think that way its fine.

In spite of the clownboyism from both sides (You PS and Xbox loyalist) This is good. That means Sony need to bring the smoke for next year. And in the end, the gamers win.

Congrats to Microsoft.
Exactly. Competetion is good. Better service and lower prices. That's why I want Microsoft to push Gamepass aggressively with content and price so they can put the pressure on Sony with Project Spartacus to do the same. Sadly Nintendo are in their own universe and hard to predict.

Would make sense for a lot of publishers, as they use to release games for Windows gaming (way before steam etc), IE: tomb raider (what came out for Sega Saturn then a month later playstation and Windows gaming)

Otherwise newer publishers that never released games on Microsoft or xbox store (potentially have no relationship with Microsoft at all)

As their dealings would be with steam or other storefronts.

For 2022 out of the big 3 publishers, Sony will lead

Horizon Forbidden West: 88
God of War Ragnarok: Probably 88 - 95
Gran Turismo 7: 88

Naughty Dog probably has TLOU remake, a TLOU Part II expansion or Factions coming this year too as they said 2022 will be big for them

Congrats to MS for 2021 though

I see. Microsoft in first place and Sony in second seems fair for last year.
This year it will be brutal between the 3.
Each of them have released or will release big hits this year. Its all up to god of war vs starfield vs breath of wild.

Nintendo has these list, Switch Sports, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario Strikers: Battle League, Splatoon 3, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Bayonetta 3, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel.

While MS has Redfall, motorsport, and starfield.

It will be tough battle.

But what about
...Game Pass day one means Xbox first-party will only release shovelware?...
and
...Xbox has no games?...

But to the point. Having first, fifth and (in next year) fourth highest rated publisher is not bad at all.... Especially after "Xbox is death" chants from few years ago.

Yeah Nintendo might get multiple 90 rated games this year

MS is more of an unknown because we don't know how Starfield will turn out and I don't think Redfall will be a 90 or close to it, Motorsport could get a 90 or higher though it's harder for sim racers to achieve that

He is right.

If starfield is a hit they could steal the spotlight this year too. Though overall sony and Nintendo will be hard to beat this year with their juggernauts releasing.
Sony should be #1 this year, assuming GoW2 comes out and is a 90+ hit. Redfall will drag Microsoft down, without knowing much about the game I expect such a game to never break above low 80s and maybe even review in the 70s. If Forza comes out this year, it's gonna be mid to high 80s. Starfield is the big unknown, could be a mega hit or could slightly disappoint, so anything from low 80s to mid 90s is possible.

Nintendo can't compete because many of their games get relatively bad reviews.

This year we should be getting

Starfield
Forza Motorsport 8
Redfall
Deathloop Xbox

They could actually break this record again, there is potential to break 90%+ average.
I doubt that. This year, it would be nintendo, not Sony or MS. The games they have are lit.

I second this. Redfall while it could surprise, it looks like one of those 75 metacritic titles. Forza 7 got a 86

One advantage MS have is cross gen is over for them, they are not clinging on to last gen. Forza Motorsport is going to be the first real next gen racing game. Redfall is the wild card but being next gen only I hope it will go beyond the likes of Borderlands.
We know Deathloop reviewed well already and they have had time to improve performance for Xbox.
Then there is Starfield, could be generation defining.

If deathloop got 88, then redfall will get close to that. I suggest you dont look down on arcane studios.
Online shooters are a different kettle of fish. Especially as a lot of devs drip feed content nowadays. I agree that Arkane are class but Redfall is not the same as their single player efforts.

My personal predictions are Redfall low to mid 80s, Forza mid to high 80s and Starfield low 90s.

Redfall is the same style game as Borderlands. It will do fine as a single player title.

Congratulations to Microsoft.

With all the new studios and IPs in development, I hope they keep the momentum going into the coming year(s).

Not having a decent number of varied in-house published games has always been one of the biggest stigmas against Xbox since the early days, glad to see they're turning that around.

Is it for real? I thought it was an online co-op shooter in the same vein as Rainbow Six Extraction. But it’s on open world campaign game that can be completed alone?

Yeah I also learned of this just very recently, that is made my interest in the game go up. Before when I thought it was a Back 4 Blood style game, I had little to no interest.

Lol Idk about that one. Deathloop scoring high doesn't guarantee Redfall will. We'll see but it doesn't seem like a game that will reach a 85 metacritic

Yes. There have been a lot of misconceptions about the game. People keep equating it to Left 4 Dead. Here is relevant info:

An open world looter shooter with seamless multiplayer.

Congratz. Keep up the good work MS. Was definitely the best year I can remember for them, and should get even better as time goes on.

"insert silver/bronze medalists with champagne" in honor of Sony and Humble Games. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Damn Xbox hold 3 of the top 5 since they owned Bethesda & Activision. When everything starts coming out from their over 30 game studios things will be wild a sight to behold.
Or the same ass drought of a snooze fest that it’s always been, especially if there’s zero interest in any games by those two publishers. Since 360 it’s been sad at best.

For what the 2 games released in 2 years or?

The article mentions how many games they count for each score. I'll post the top three here:

#1: Microsoft (Xbox Game Studios)

Previous year's rank: 6
Average Metascore for 2021 releases: 87.4
10 scored products (5 distinct titles): 100% good, 0% bad
"Great" games: 3
Total points: 346.0

#2: Sony

Previous year's rank: 4
Average Metascore for 2021 releases: 81.3
11 scored products (10 distinct titles): 91% good, 0% bad
"Great" games: none
Total points: 312.9

#3: Humble Games

Previous year's rank: 18
Average Metascore for 2021 releases: 80.9
17 scored products (7 distinct titles): 88% good, 0% bad
"Great" games: none
Total points: 309.6

I understand, but it's a bit confusing when you compare less titles vs more titles and average them out. The median data would be so skewed.

Of course, but there's the old "quality over quantity" adage.

Surprised Humble is so high with 17 where MS and Sony are top 2 with 10, 11 comparatively though.

Critics love their indies.

Really looking forward to seeing an extended gameplay demo of starfield this Summer. It has the potential to be a massive hit. I'm hoping it's more like skyrim and less like fallout 4.

Yeah that’s reasonable. I still think Nintendo has the stronger lineup but some of their games will drag the average down by being low 80s.

The “distinct titles” is the more interesting number:

Microsoft: 5
Sony: 10
Humble: 7

Note that five is the minimum number to be included in the list, so as much as people say Halo Infinite is unfinished, it’s a good thing they squeaked out what they had to get the W.

What even is this comment? You so insecure you felt the need to make this a Sony thread and then leave that snide "congrats" at the end for Xbox/MS.

Jesus christ.

Congraz to Phil and Xbox, but this is hardly surprising. I knew late last year they had a mortal lock on Publisher of the Year. Spitting out all 80 and 90+ games with NO low scoring dogs at all. Great year for Xbox.

What is also not even slightly surprising is the usual group of fanbois desperately doing everything in their power to downplay this whilst increasing more of their vast holdings in salt mines.

They’ve certainly kept the momentum going this year with Crossfire X.

Except that's not published by Microsoft, nor is it even from a Microsoft first party studio. The publisher is Smilegate. Nice try, though. All the games responsible for their 2021 performance are Microsoft owned game studios, and the IP belong to Microsoft also.

I admire your console passion, though.

Like that console warring doctor, you are the best of the best of what's left.
