David Jaffe to Phil Spencer: 'You suck...... get some therapy.'

The weird cult like worship of him online, including forums like gaf is embarrassing at this point.

His motto of the games are coming has been his MO since what 2015? And they still aren't arriving.
At one point he played down single player games because MS couldn't get any out of the door and Sony could, so said they were going to focus on GaaS.. because thats what the player base wants right Phil?

Then it was backcompat because again they couldn't get games out the door. It's great don't get me wrong but the only reason they did this was because they couldn't compete with exclusives not because they're the good guys .

Then it was gamepass. After throwing enough shit at the walls finally finding something that sticks.

Now they've spent 10 billion soon to be total 90 billion dollars on nearly every 3rd party they can find because they kept failing on producing first party games and all this does is stop gamers from playing games to nurse Phil's own failures.
Might as well have just bought Sony or at least their PS division, would have been easier.

So yeah the guys a clown but somehow always gets away with it.
He is actually probably one of the best PR guys out there because no matter what he says or lies about people still foam at the mouth for him and want him to impregnated their wives.

He is the ultimate fluffer.

At least Jim Ryan doesn't pretend to be a good guy, the guy is a cunt and a proud one.

Well, I don't get how Jaffe was able to direct anything at some point.

The guy is like a walking can of sulfuric acid.

Phil Spencer is crap at managing studios, yes. But that's not his job anyway, his job should be getting people that can do it. Good Cop, bad cop routine, being that he always wants to be good cop. Bobby Kottick as bad cop?

Although Spencer is a rent-a-quote, and hasn't being doing a good job for years, Jaffe is like Jeff Grubb with his attention-seeking content destined to stir up gamers and make him relevant again.
Comparing anyone to Fatt Slobb is the lowest anyone can go. You can call someone a prick, cunt, fucker, dickhead, arsehole but never Jeff Grubb.

It's too harsh a comment to anyone on planet Earth.

Warzone will always be multi platform. But if you want to easily level up your load out in normal MP like people who actually play COD do, you’ll need a device that has Gamepass.
They haven't said that specifically though. Their message on the subject speaks of them, as in plurality, of titles.

To be clear, Microsoft will continue to make Call of Duty and other popular Activision Blizzard titles available on PlayStation through the term of any existing agreement with Activision. And we have committed to Sony that we will also make them available on PlayStation beyond the existing agreement and into the future so that Sony fans can continue to enjoy the games they love. We are also interested in taking similar steps to support Nintendo's successful platform. We believe this is the right thing for the industry, for gamers and for our business.

It sure as fuck wasn't Returnal. I voted for Metroid Dread personally. Infinite was a lot of fun though. So was Forza H5. Last year didn't really have a single clear leader for GOTY.
Did I bring up any of these games?
I said Halo Infinite is NeoGaf GOTY.
Why are you getting so triggered by it??

Halo Infinite is A LOT OF FUN!!!
Halo was the shining star among all games released last year.

No different than the people making up a timed exclusive for Starfield.
How is that an excuse?

So far MS hasn't pulled a single IP that was multiplatform or made it worse to play on PS after an acquisition. Starfield was probably going to release for PS5 before but it's a new IP, very different from CoD or something like that.

Where is The Initiative?

Where is Rare?

Where is The Coalition?

Where is Ninja Theory?

These are studios that haven’t released games in 3-5 years!!

And worse, they’ve shown no tangible gameplay whatsoever. You’re telling me that not one of them can get a game out to fill a huge void in 2022?
What ?! rare has an ongoing service game which is their most successful game ever made and working on a new IP. Coalitions been one of the most productive studios next to playground including helping epic build that unreal demo. While working on a new IP snd next gears. Ninja 🥷 theory just put out a demo for their game a little while ago and the initiative is working with crystal on perfect dark so what are you even asking? Not to mention when the activision deal closes Microsoft will have more developers to o pool from and a more steady stream of releases.

It’s reasonable speculation. Industry trend is both companies crossing the aisle in spots. Plus they just added at least another half year of development costs on top of the, what has it been, 6 or 8 years so far? I know that MS has said exclusive to GP, but they also said November 2022 even when They had to know that date was Not happening. No way they just found out it needed more time on Monday.

I think Phil has done a great job on bolstering Xbox/PC studios and raking in talent and Gamepass has been pretty impressive …

But I believe he really needs to get someone better to manage these studios, and this isn’t really about Starfield getting delayed, that game was already very much in production before parent studio/publisher Zenimax was acquired.

343 has been a mess though, I think it would be good for the Halo IP, if another studio worked on it for a change. Different perspective can really liven things up.

But personally I kind of been given studios, not just Microsoft, the benefit of the doubt with Covid pretty much paralyzing the world in 2020-2021, it’s shadow can still be felt in 2022.

Anyone seriously trotting out this inane "publisher of the year award" needs to be banned. I cannot imagine clinging to such an absurd talking point unless you're literally getting paid.
Really? Are you really that upset over Microsoft winning a pseudo publisher of the year award from a reviewer site like Metacritic? Please don’t tell me you think they paid for it.

btw they aren’t my personal publisher of the year, but I’m not hating.

Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, Forza Horizon 5, Halo Infinite, Psychonauts 2?

The most amusing subtext of this thread is the whole “i don’t like these games so they don’t exist” vibe
Deathloop and Ghostwire isn’t out on Xbox so from a Xbox Gamer perspective they actually don’t exist.

1st party output on Xbox so far this gen:
The Medium (3rd party timed exclusive)
Gears Tactics (not made in-house)
Flight Sim (not made in-house)
Psychonauts 2
The Ascent (3rd party timed exclusive)
Forza Horizon 5
Halo Infinite

What else?

MS handed these studios a golden ticket of wealth and near infinite time. There is no struggle anymore. Some of the best entertainment comes out of blood, sweat and tears and the need for survival. These studios are fat and happy without releasing shit. What is their motivator?

Xbox and Dallas Cowboys fans.
As someone who plays Xbox in Dallas... That stings a bit, I must admit.

I cut the Cowboys a lot of slack though. They're no different than basically any other team not lead by someone named Brady or Manning. This year was yet again finally supposed to be our year, and look what happened. Brady gets dementia, forgets he's old, and decides to unretire. So he can win yet another superbowl.

To me, it appears as if Spencer stole Jerry Jones's playbook. Those Cowboys 3 superbowl wins back in the 90's was solely attributable to Jerry Jones buying up literally every all pro free agent on the market just prior to the market cap being implemented. Spencer's strategy as of late seems eerily similar. He's likely just as baffled as anyone regarding their current situation.

You can almost see Spencer now, digging out and going throwing his notes.
Spencer: "Step one. By up all the talent. Check."
"Step two. Be supportive, and stand on the sideline and clap when we see success. Check"
"Step three. Beat the brakes off all who oppose you and ride off into the sunset as the most valuable brand in the world. Che..."
"Where did I go wrong? Is there another step in here somewhere I missed?"

I don't agree with Jaffe in this one, but some people here seems too easily triggered by everything the man says.

But again, I don't agree... not completely. I don't think Phil Spencer needs therapy, I just think he is doing his job being overly optimistic on the social media all the time.

But I do agree that 2022 has been terrible, and that they need to recognize it and do something about it. I also agree that they have tons of studios, and many of them did not release anything for a long time, neither a gameplay trailer of their games, and in some cases not even a teaser. I think it's time already for them to start showing the benefits, for the consumers, of all the acquisitions they made, and I hope they don't just kill some of these great studios they acquired. However, what we truly expected for this year was just Starfield, and that's the only thing that changed... so time will tell... (although "next year is gonna be great for Xbox" is also becoming silly).

Exactly, this was my point.

Remove Double Fine and Bethesda...2 recent acquisitions....and it would be looking very dry as far as games by Xbox studios or Xbox exclusives.

Since Nov 2020.

Its amazing looking back on some ppl dismissing the PS5 launch...when combined with PS4 games that released before Nov 2020 Sony put out a ton of games that year.

Hell, Sony did the damn near 1 new game a month this year so far. And at least 1 of those was delayed to this year.

Jaffe is correct here. But the problem is with the whole high brass running X-box. They just don't get the creative part. All business and charts. Nintendo had this all the time and was what kept them going despite having the worst hardware for the past several generations. Sony developed that and got people with creative vision to administer creative production and knew the need for a nucleus of high creativity even if it sustains some losses. Probably learnt from running movie studios, they did use this connection to improve the games production.
MS used to have this with the original XB1 up to early 360. they had close relations with Bioware and Bungie but they let all that go. I suspect Don Mattrick removed a lot of that old philosophy. He is gone but his legacy still has a bad influence on the thinking of the high brass.

I thought it was quite boring with bland level design (just my opinion) and undeserving of the award.
Grappling hook is very cool tho, but that was it for me. But let's be honest, grappling hook is gonna be cool no matter where you put it.
Honestly, for me, shooters like DUSK or DOOM Eternal are much more fun than the last Halo.

Nothing against you mate, but putting your opinions as facts, and the calling names on others... this hee ho thinks that's not cool at all.

Sorry, that's bullshit. We're not talking about launch with ZERO software or the problems at The Initiative or 343 or Playground Games or UndeadLabs. And we're not talking about Halo being delayed and (while a great game) still launching with anemic content. And we're not talking about Halo taking SIX MONTHS post launch to get us 2 maps (with no new maps coming- apparently- for 4-6 more months). This is a NEW thing we're talking about.

I'm a fan of Phil and a fan of Xbox but I'm no abused spouse who is ok going back to their abuser over and over. How many chances are you gonna give this guy to do what so many other execs in the biz can do and have done for decades?
I expect your white doc from 2017 on how to plan for the coming covid pandemic soon.

and your explanation for why playground only putting out one GOTY game at a time is bad.

Calls him out for his comments on the delay. Compares his own struggles producing a game and says Phil simply might not be good at producing games. That this isnt a one off. See more below:

Harsh words, but I get it. This isn't something new with Xbox studios. It's not just about the delays, it's about the constant BS PR that accompanies any bad news but things never really truly improve. He took over from Don Matrick as CEO in June of 2013. 9 years and $85 billion later, and it's the same song and dance when it comes to missed first party expectations. Not to mention, he had been head of Xbox game studios since 2008. Maybe he's good at acquisitions but not actually managing these studios? Despite a good year last year, Xbox is set to end the first two years of next gen without any next gen games so Jaffe calling him out on this 'We get it' PR is completely understandable. It's like 'Do you really?', 'Do you really get it?'

Can someone explain to me why naked anime girls cover the right of the screen at 1:30?

I mean don't get me wrong I like anime girls as much as the next guy but Jaffe can be pretty woke at times, seems odd to see that on his stream.

Yeah, I also created massive franchises that are still going and being turned into movies and tv shows (not to mention toys and comics and all kinds of other shit).

Look, I'm not trying to toot my horn but if everytime I say something you don't like you bring up one of the few games I've worked on that has flopped, I'm not gonna have much choice. Here's the takeaway: By your own admission, you've done nothing with your life. So:

a- reflect on that and figure out what is wrong with you. Therapy can help.
b- until you come close to being a key contributor to bringing the world the kind of fun and joy and escape that I have, please walk your non-contributing ass over to the nearest stool, sit the fuck down, and shut the fuck up.

Yes I own the game but that was 2005 not 2022. I've paid attention to a fair bit of Jaffe and he's certainly more progressive than I expected him to be these days.
He's liberal, and has a trans kid. But he's also pretty strongly in favor of battling political correctness, and comments here regularly when no other devs will publicly. It's pretty obvious to me he's not an SJW ... at all.

Jaffe I respect your work and what you have done for Sony. As an outsider I feel many of your comments are taken out of context because they often contain inflammatory language. I think this can hurt your reputation because most people read headlines not sources.

The weird cult like worship of him online, including forums like gaf is embarrassing at this point.

His motto of the games are coming has been his MO since what 2015? And they still aren't arriving.

You're not really making the compelling argument you think you are here.

• Your first point revolves around Spencer downplaying single player games, choosing instead to focus on live service games. You then suggest that this isn't what anyone wants, and therefore... would be a poor decision. You might've almost had a point if it weren't for Sony (who had no problem getting those singleplayer games out the door) following his exact steps... Only several years later.

• "Then it was backcompat". Same as above. They're all doing for money. However, yet again. We see Sony following along years later, and in regards to this point... Not doing so nearly as well.

• "Then it was gamepass." Surely you can see where this is going? MS has found some success with Gamepass, and in matter how hard you try to downplay it. Predictably, we see Sony changing course in order to offer something similar, as their previous strategy was an abysmal failure.

• They've spent billions buying "nearly every third party they can find". Assuming some Groundhog Day like scenario isn't playing out here, I'm seeing an obvious trend here. Who could've guessed that just like all the examples listed above. Sony following MS's footsteps and buying every 3rd party it can find... and afford.

So yeah, there's plenty of reasons to question Spencer's job performance. It's not even difficult to argue he hasn't performed well when it comes to games since taking over Xbox. Yet the way you go on about him, one would think that it was Spencer that railed your wife, and you despise him for her loving it or something.

How very odd seeing such loathing and failed arguments coming from someone who calls themselves "slicker than your average", though I admit you didn't specify exactly what "your average" refers to.

This guy sounds like an absolute idiot. Firstly, Phil is a CEO not a producer, big difference. Comparing Phil to his 28 year old self is lolz, I think Phil did a little better in life than Jaffe by the looks of it.

Secondly games get delayed all the time, including first party. Sony delayed almost all of their recent first party games, as does Nintendo as does 3rd party. I agree devs need to get their shit together when it comes to announcing games too early, making it impossible for them to make a realistic launch date. But I dont understand how this is a Phil Spencer problem? It's an industry problem. Sounds like personal beef to me.

Dont know why people keep making threads about Jaffe's opinions

Dude's career as a game dev is long gone, and he now depends on clicks to make money

So obviously he will spill lots of controversial opinions with clickbait titles

I was going to use this Stockholm syndrome analogy as well. You see this time and time again with all types of brands. More so in gaming/nerd shit though it seems.

I bet there is a psychological introverted explanation for it, somewhere if a study were done. Almost like how a lot of the same nerds are simps on Twitch and gifting thots money they will never physically meet.

Lack of self confidence and respect, maybe?

So the dude in charge hires a fuck ton of people to make games, those people fails to deliver the games on time, so the the dude in charge is 100% responsible for that. Let's disregard every other thing we can and get to the conclusion that the dude in charge sucks and should get some therapy...

Most people game to get distracted, get out of their own reality and to relax or compete etc

Brands to indeed use tactics that makes people that are vulnerable - identify themselves with the brand. It can go to extremes where their identity or well being depends on their brand and any criticism of the brand will be view as a personal attack.

People who are lonely or feel socially awkward etc will try to find a group to fit in! That is where the brand comes in! It sells a lifestyle it has a fanbase…a community!

You see how easy it is to go down that rabbit hole?
