'Overwatch 2' moderation tools include voice chat transcriptions and SMS verification (2FA)

I've read the replies, I'm not responding to people invidiually. I'm not surprised at the responses. They're all defending a slippery slope the same way people defended horse armour. Now we have games shilling mtx for laughably high prices. $20 for a skin? Buh buh it's optional.

You people obviously have no standards or self respect and one hell of a gaming addiction.

Saying "but der corpurashuns hav ur data" make you sound like moronic. How did the corporations get our data? Because Simps like you lot handed it over willingly.

If you think this decision by blizz is defensible then God help us. If you think them listening to voice chats for no-no words is OK, then God help us.

Don't worry though, I won't be back in this thread or replying to anymore @s. The mods have probably being spammed with reports and there's no need to make their lives harder.

Fwiw, my spending on gaming has gone from $100's a month over the years to $16 a month for gamepass ($1deal) and PSN+. But why aren't these companies making money anymore? Hmm I wonder.

So next week when Overwatch 2 launches I won't be able to play OW1 (which I paid for) anymore AND they want my phone number before I can play OW2?

It would literally be the same thing as Overwatch 1 becoming free. It's the same game updated.

As for the text verification, the alternative would have been to play with cheaters. Many F2P games do this and it has helped the cheating problem significantly.

Don't have a problem with this. The corpos already got my email, probably my name and phone number too since I've called them for support in years past. They can steal all the money in my bank account if they want to. Wont last em past the month

If anyone complaining about this has a Facebook or any social media for that matter they are plain hypocrites

I’m all for it. Wish league would implement it so no more smurfs could exist, and people banned don’t just make new accounts to go again.

Take my social my phone whatever you want if you’ll make online better.

The people in here complaining are like 1% of total players at launch. Won’t even dent it.

1. I wouldn't ask for help I would figure it out

2. I don't have real info or data on xbl and psn anyway. It's all made up.

3. Looking forward to someone getting hacked just so you can act smug is a pretty shitty way to live your life. You sound like a bitter dude. I hope you find help.

4. The answer to better security isn't to give more personal details to companies who promise and fail to protect said data. The answer is to give fewer personal details.

You guys order delivered food from the shop around the corner, take fb surveys to see which color are you and use voice assistant for everything and then worry about giving away your phone number....

I don't have real info or data on xbl and psn anyway. It's all made up.
Then get a burner sim card for this if it bothers you that much.
2FA is objectively more secure than 1FA.
It also helps to keep people honest about smurfing and cheating.
It's like a padlock. Every single one in existance is easily pickable. But just having one in place dissuades most people from screwing with your shit.
That's why F2P games use this. Deal with it or play something else.

Who gives a shit. I never awnser mine unless I know the caller anyhow. I doubt Bobby is going to leave me voice-mail where he breathes heavy and sends me dick pics.
Hopefully they sell my data just so I get random calls asking if this is Mr "Fuckedyour Momsixtynine"

Or option 3 I won't play the game.

Oh noes sum1 beat me online. Quick, let me use my burner account and phone to have 2fa, the same method other cheaters can use to carry on cheating.

Me smart.

Every single one? Easily pickable? Even the ones that are keyless to avoid being picked?

Deal with it or play something else.
Watch out, we got a bad ass over here.

Let's see how that business practice works out. Who am I kidding, we all know how it's going to turn out

The absolute shit state of gaming is thanks to posters and players like these.

It's ok for companies to take your info because they take it anyway? What kind of fucking logic is that? They have your data in the first place because YOU GAVE IT TO THEM. just stop handing shit over

I didn't need to give a phone number, 2fa, driving license, address, a rectal exam or bank details when I played CS:S. Do you know how they solved cheating? Private servers.

I cannot wait for the industry to crash and fucking burn
Lmfao, they already have the number for 2FA... Besides, not like I'm an interesting political figure. What's the big deal lol, the true shit state of gaming is because of investors who know fuck all about gaming and only care about deadlines and getting as much money as possible out you with battlepasses.
Like in my quoted message, go play something else then.

Your phone number was never meant to be used as 2FA. The only thing this will do is encourage more indian scammers to play the game, or hack them to get a list of numbers like they did with the “do not call” list. Depending on your country, you can get scam messages from short numbers that appear legitimate, until you open it and see that a dash is in the wrong place or something else screwy. The less you tie your number to, the better. Personally, I use email 2FA or Authy. At least with email you can still gain access if your phone has an issue

And what the hell with the voice to text AI banning? Right, like v2t works so great. It’s been 10+ years and my phone still can’t understand the word “maybe”

Found the sole entity who still thinks his data is 100% secure and anonymous while
  • posting on a public forum
  • connecting to game services

Why are you all crying over a fucking phone number? Do you not realize your information already is on the internet for many others to see? Google has your info and so does Facebook. This doesn't change anything lol.

yeeeeeeeeeee no.

was quite looking forward to trying it out. you're not getting my phone number. i know lots of companies already have my number but i try my best to limit how much i need to give it out. in this case i simply need to NOT play a game? easy!

the amount of companies wanting phone numbers these days is ridiculous. might be worth setting up an anonymous secondary number for these obtrusive companies.
i'm a fucking donkey and look like a fool now. turns out i already gave them my phone number years ago lol :messenger_grinning_sweat: i don't think i've logged into my blizzard account since 2018. i guess i might as well play the game now 🤷‍♂️

This reminds me of Blizzard's Battle.net 2.0 attempt at "Real ID". They abandoned it after their own staff's Ids were compromised when they tried to show how safe their system was. Laughably dense.

I'm not justifying this approach, but to play devil's advocate here: a lot of people use 2FA via text code for a large number of services. I certainly do. Is the core issue that your number is available to Activision Blizzard specifically (their 2FA is currently handled by the Battle.net app or independent hardware authenticator) or that any developer requires a phone number? If it was Valve requiring a mobile number for Steam, for example, would this be different at a platform level?

For an online PvP game with one the most toxic communities and as a F2P title where cheaters can make new accounts easily, I do think it's a good idea. If it help with the aforementioned things, I'm down for it.

I mean, imagine how people would act on the internet when they had to use their real names and there would be real repercussions. I mean, people act like real douchebags because there are no or very little repercussions. But telling someone to die of cancer and never to touch a video game ever again in real life? Boy, this dude would be in trouble. Nothing good old fashioned suckerpunch would solve. But no, we're 'civilized', so we need something for that, something for acting like an asshole on the internet.

So this might be a good start. I imagine a world real 'social media' that is not used for death threats (use the old fashioned way and send a letter from your home address if you dare) and cancel culture, and video game communities that are actually welcoming and inviting and not consisting of edgelords and late-pubescent people with angst and self-insecurity issues.

Ah yes, the good old "think of the children" argument, but this time is"cheating".

Yeah sure, I'm more than willing to give you all my personal info just to play a stupid online game.
At least is a good ol’ western corporation doing the spying and not Tencent… 😮‍💨.
Or right.
The more barriers you make, the better. A phone number is the least invasive thing they can do. Players cry for anticheat measures all day without understanding that it means giving up portions of your "safety".

Installing a kernel anticheat is insanity to me. But a phone number? not really.
Chat transcripts used for moderation? Phone number on top of a lot other personal data is worth a lot of money for ad marketers…

For the record.

I sent a message to Blizzard's customer service asking for a refund, since it's an unilateral decision to cut me off my legally bought game. I know full well I will get nothing (not that I care for a few euros), but I want to send a message, make a point. And to make some problems for them.

It would be advisable that people who judge this issue like me do the same.
