Silent Hill 2 Remake Announced | PS5 & PC

James looks a little weird, and I'm not a fan of his new gruff voice. I'm not a fan of the RE style OTS camera either. I'm obviously still excited for it, but cautious. It weirdly doesn't look as AAA as I would have expected, yet. I cant put my finger on it, but something just seems weird in presentation.

Still, I'll go in with an open mind and see how it goes. Cautiously excited

I started playing The Medium tonight and finished the intro before watching the UTD game. It took me a short time to get used to the old-school control scheme, but it seems decent to me, though I found the protagonist’s dead-eyes the scariest thing in the game so far. I’ll have a proper bash this weekend.

Nothing is required but let the entitled whining commence.

As long as we all agree that nobody's entitled to play previously 3rd party franchises on whatever system they choose, and nobody should ever whine about how 1st party companies are "taking away" 3rd party games because they can no longer play them on their favorite console

I don’t understand the change of tone in the intro mirror.
He is angry and weirdly confused and tense.
While in the original the tone was “I am tired and sad. I drive here for the longest time”.
Completely two different tones.
Do yourself a favor and just go into it expecting a new game and you might possibly enjoy it.

Never played The Medium, but Blair Witch was pretty good.
yeah, after lukewarm reviews I was very pleasantly surprised by it. It's actually scary and that's not something I would say about many games that try to be. Definitely not about the Medium

I feel like Silent Hill has one of the highest "message board excitement" to "commercial impact" ratio of any gaming franchise. I'm sure the games are great but I never understood the concept that a new Silent Hill was some monumental event and that it being exclusive would be a massive blow for Xbox. Basically all the mainstream excitement over the previous cancelled Silent Hill was due to Norman Reedus being in it and PT being a cool concept for a teaser. I don't think Silent Hill as a brand has much widespread appeal outside of the people who loved the previous games. I'll try it out if reviews are good, and I'm happy for Silent Hill fans, I just think it's potential impact generally gets vastly overstated

Maybe Blooper Team is a fan of the direction that Tomm Hulett and Troy Baker took Silent Hill 2.

if this is real time it looks fucking awesome, the James model looks a lot like the actor playing him. But it seems bloober lacks animation skills or they fall short in comparison of what naughty dogg is capable of. Pretty great that yamaoka is redoing the music and mixing it up. I hope the acting of the other actors are great. This kind of games need excellent actors to bring the story alive. This trailer puts to shame the matrix demo. The fog is very thick and looks impressive.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

There will be less subtlety and more overt displays of a characters dubious nature and motivation for being in the town.

It's a remake so we already know what's happening but for first timers I don't think they'll have the motel VHS tape reveal be as surprising anymore.

That's my take at least.

A large part of James’ character is that he is already broken by the time we meet him. He cares little for his own safety and is very numb to the world around him.

If he wasn’t this way…why the fuck would he go to Silent Hill to find Mary in the first place?

Not sure if I ever played 2. After playing the first game, by far the most disturbing game I have ever played, I think I skipped 2.

Subtleties were also based on the limitations of tech at the time. The OG Ito is working on it, so I’m not too worried about atmosphere and tone… yet.

Never played a silent hill game. If this turns out to be good that may change. Can't say I have high expectations from that developer/publisher, though.

Wonder if this will also release on PS4/Xbox One after a year. With how greedy Konami is, I wouldn't rule that out. The Phantom Pain released in every single potato available.

Ito was not in charge of game direction, narrative or characters. Even now he is labeled as the author of monster design. But the one in charge of the other aspect seems to not be able to grasp the original vibe, or to be willingly trying to give it a different vibe.

I’m not seeing a major concern with it right now. I will wait until they show more of the actual final scenes.

Personally, I liked some of the new expressions of outright mental terror on his face.

Silent Hill 2 remake revealed, first gameplay details and design changes announced

Silent Hill 2 remake revealed, first gameplay details and design changes announced

Konami and Bloober Team on how they're reimagining the horror classic for PS5.

Hello, I am Konami producer Motoi Okamoto. When it came to reviving Silent Hill, what we saw as most important was to do so together with those who love the series. Silent Hill had been, if you will, ”silent” for many years. Yet, even during that silence, we had been receiving proposals for new entries and remakes. This is truly a franchise that is beloved by so many fans.

Bloober Team was one such team with the most passionate of proposals. They are a studio that truly loves and specializes in horror games. Together with creators who love Silent Hill, for fans who have a special place in their heart for Silent Hill, we have decided to remake Silent Hill 2. To explain more, I will hand it over to Mateusz Lenart, Creative Director & Lead Designer at Bloober Team.

The classic returns anew

Silent Hill 2 is a beloved and timeless classic – it’s almost a cliche to say it out loud, but it’s just so true for many of the Bloober Team members. This is also the reason why we approach working on the remake with such great care and respect for the original game.

With that in mind, one of our primary goals is to preserve the atmosphere that made Silent Hill 2 so exceptional, while also modernizing many aspects of the game’s overall gameplay. We are working closely with the original creators, including Akira Yamaoka and Masahiro Ito, to ensure we’re keeping that unique Silent Hill feel intact.

One of the new elements that you could spot in the reveal trailer is the adoption of an over-the-shoulder camera. With that change we want to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are a part of this unreal world, and deliver them a more visceral experience across the board.

One change often brings another. With a new perspective, we’re rebuilding the combat system and certain set-pieces, among other things. Now that you see basically what James can see, we could find new ways to keep the player on edge.

Twenty-one years have passed since the release of Silent Hill 2 for PlayStation 2 and the big leap in technology allows us to be even closer – at least in some aspects – to how Team Silent would have desired their game to be back in 2001. Thanks to state-of-the-art motion capture sessions, we can deliver the best facial expressions in the series’ history and show a wide range of emotions even before a character speaks a single word.

Built with Unreal Engine 5

We are updating the Silent Hill 2 experience comprehensively. With the possibilities of the Unreal Engine 5, we’re bringing the foggy, sinister town to life in ways that were impossible up to this point. The game will delight PlayStation 5 players visually, auditorily, and sensorily.

Some of the Unreal Engine 5 features that really shine are Lumen and Nanite. With them we’re raising the graphics to new, highly-detailed and realistic levels, while turning the game’s signature nerve-racking atmosphere to eleven.

Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. It means that the light interacts with the environment realistically, just like in the real world. The whole game environment is lit more naturally this way. The Nanite technology, on the other hand, is an amazing tool for level designers. With it, they can create incredibly detailed worlds and more realistic environments that look and feel almost lifelike.

New PS5 features

It’s not only graphics, though. A lot of Silent Hill’s disturbing atmosphere comes from music and sound design. Thanks to PS5’s 3D audio capabilities, players will be able to determine the exact direction where the sound is coming from. The WWise sound engine creates a realistic and believable soundscape that helps players feel like they are truly inside the game.

Of course, we are not forgetting about the DualSense controller. We’ve already shown with our previous title, The Medium, that we can get pretty creative when it comes to haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. We’re bringing even more new ideas for Silent Hill 2, but let’s keep a surprise for now.

One last great improvement I want to mention is the SSD storage technology. The superfast data streaming means players won’t see any loading screens as they seamlessly explore the entirety of the Silent Hill town.

Armed with these technologies, we hope to make Silent Hill 2 an even more harrowing and unforgettable experience for fans old and new. We’re confident that we can do justice to this cult classic, and breathe a new life into its gameplay. The end result will be a Silent Hill game that looks and sounds better than anything that has come before it. While the development is not over yet, we already can’t wait for fans to experience it.

A new chapter begins

The revival of the Silent Hill series does not end with Silent Hill 2. We have announced not just the remake of a past classic, but also multiple titles with all-new stories. The creation of new games is what truly brings the franchise back.

We will create new games for the series together with those who were a part of Silent Hill, but also with creators who love the franchise. We will expand our partnerships and broaden the world of Silent Hill together with teams that love the series from around the globe.

Above all, together with long-time Silent Hill fans and new fans-to-be, we will raise the Silent Hill series to new heights.

This looks visually solid imo. Curious why they did skip over remaking the first game though.

Damn some people on Gaf are really down on Bloober Team. lol was The Medium that bad?
The foundation is pretty much set for them already. They would have to go out of their way to fuck this up tbh.
Too many manchildren complaining about Bloober all the time but Observer was a very good title.

The remake looks crazy good. Full AAA like Resident Evil 2. Very impressive from Bloober.

I'm playing The Medium on PS+ later 😁

The fact this remake is gonna be on UE5 is nuts. Hope the gameplay is on RE2R levels.

It's not coming to Xbox. And, by that time, PS5 will probably be over 4 years into.the generation.

So, no, I'd guess PS5 and PC only

This remake is already a no for me, despite the immense work. SH2 is a game that's extremely hard to remake and i can already tell they just fucked it up with the characters and tone.

I'm not mad about it but it's a shame even people who are probably fans of the original game didn't get the subtelty of the chara-design that is a big part in the themes of the game and the atmosphere. It just shows how western games are lacking in intelligence.

So this is releasing soonish right. They alreqdy have the pc specs down and you can wishlisted it on psn supposedly. Looks like we are finally getting bona fide unreal engine 5 games next year with Hellblade 2 and Silent Hill 2.
