Microsoft really doesnt give a shit about pushing the medium forward. Their approach to winning the gen will reduce the quality of GAMES

Is Matt Damon right?

No they are winning based on previous gen momentum.

Exclusives are such a small piece of the pie. I don't ever understand why people here praise them like they are the be all end all
Sony exclusives won a dozen Game Awards a few days ago plus announced there a new Kojima game, the sequel of what pretty likely is or will be his best selling game ever, announced a dlc of the fastest selling Guerrilla Games ever (sequel of one that sold over 20M units) and a couple of PC ports. Which was a big contrast compared to their direct competition.

Their newer console, even if heavily affected by chips shortages broke records as the fastest selling console ever and also had records of player engagement, demand or social media engagement, plus also are now also getting record revenue and profit to name a few. They also have been growing all their internal teams and acquiring new ones.

They continued the momentum they had in previous gen, but they are doing their job and are performing better than ever and growing.

To me it shows you are recognising and overselling MS while doing little more than hand waving years and years of Sony’s publishing and development work as “walking simulators”… not even recognising advancement in advancing the medium through a tech perspective (two weights and two measures and all that).
Good to hear that even you are calling these games “walking simulators” as I have not used that term, as not all Sony walk sims (there are some notable exceptions). But I cannot see even 1 game Sony released this gen that would push medium forwards. Historically they have done it, but this gen there is a lack of effort.

Tired of these excuses.

Japan was fully onboard home console train for most of PS3/wii generation.

Their working conditions/ society didn't change overnight.

Companies never focused on engagement, keeping people hooked there.

If I play some of current Japanese games, I would also abandon consoles and find a new passtime.
These are facts, not excuses.

During PS3/Wii gen they had DS and PSP there, the most successful handheld generation ever.

I assume that after that mobile tech started to be good enough for gaming and the market grew a lot, so they (and the rest of the world) started to move faster to mobile, specially the casual market. Maybe before PSP and DS they though handheld games weren't as cool as home console games.

And many Japanese devs like From Software, Capcom, Platinum, Sega, Nintendo, ARC System Works, Bandai Namco etc keep doing awesome top tier games.

This was not profit. revenue if I remember...

anyway - people eat this shit up... They are talking away our value, games, ownership and we are happy to pay for all of it and take pants down ourselves. Seriously, what is happening?!
Physical will die soon, services will triumph... is that really what people want ?!

Yeah, 3 billion revenue can only be made with a $1 cost by 3 billion people subscribing to it. That was the point. You claimed that the subs cost $1 - do you believe MS has 3 billion subscribers to game pass? If not, you should probably make a correction to your post, because it’s wrong.

The value and games points are subjective but ownership is clearly not being removed - every game that appears on gamepass can be bought day 1 independently of gamepass. I personally find the value and games available on gamepass to be incredible and not at all worthy of the disdain you hold for it.

Physical isn’t going to die - movies and music still have physical releases and they’ve had streaming services far longer than games have. It will end up being much less popular than it was before, and when that happens it’s because people find it more useful to have digital games than physical ones.

I have listed in my previous post…regardless obviously these are not fitting your narrative so we should ignore these exist. Understood.
I've played all of those games aside from Starfield....which I'm going to play on my Series X. Wtf are you talking about?

They are not walking simulators, but I like this pretending you are above going to that old talking point ;). Cute…

It's 1$ only on pc for some audience. I never caimed otherwise.
I certainly never paid more than 1$ for it and neither my friends

You mean like remastering a game twice in less than 7 years effort?

Lol even with out Gamepass the push to digital was happening because people are lazy. They rather click a few buttons get a game than drive to the store. Or have to get off the couch to change a disc. You dont seem to angry over the discless PS5.
I do

Seeing that damn Series S ad just now just ... lol

They tried the "release good games, sell consoles" approach Sony and Nintendo have been successful at for years, and it didn't win them the gen. So what did they do? They switched their entire focus to "services" and "value". Not games. Services.

They don't give a damn about advancing the medium we love. That ship seems to have sailed. It does not seem important to them anymore.

Poor studio management, entire calendar years without first party releases. Not investing in new IP, same promises every year, telling us to wait.

They make stupid fucking decisions:
  • Money hatting The Mid instead Silent Hill 2 (same devs).
  • Turning down Spider-Man as an exclusive on their platform.
  • Spending 100 million dollars on 1 year of Tomb Raider exclusivity. Sony bought Insomniac for 200 million. Be smarter.
They show up to a gameshow with 103 million viewers with a Gamepass Ad. Not a single update on a single game. Some of these games were announced in 2019.

They push the Series S (an underpowered budget console that, despite whatever Kool-Aid some Indie Studio head tells you to drink, will be responsible for limiting the potential of multiplat games for an entire generation) more than the Series X.

Phil's strategy is to literally buy out publishers, then put their most popular games on every. single. platform. From literal goddamn TV apps, to mobile, to weak machines like the Nintendo Switch.

If it was up to MS, they would buy Take 2, then require all GTA games to release on the Switch moving forward- Scaled down and downgraded to hell. Ambition and fidelity across all platforms would have to be limited. But hey, it sells, and gives gamers "options". Who fucking cares. Make a mindblowing product and sell it to its target audience. If you need to reach a more casual, younger audience... then invest in NEW IP.

Alright, Gamepass.

I'm not even going to mention much about this abomination. I'm going to let Matt Damon do the talking. Watch this clip.

Theres a cost for everything. You have to be blind or naive to not see the parallels between what is happening in Hollywood and what will happen with Gamepass.

Just replace those DVD's with games (and people no longer buying them because of Gamepass) and replace those types of movies he's referring to with: Quality AAA titles, new AAA IP, experimental AAA titles, etc. If the "Netflix of Games" becomes a reality, then studios will NOT see the need to, or be brave enough to green light certain games. Point blank. You are already seeing gamers complain about paying $70 for games. It will get worse as the gamepass model contiunes to grow. You can kiss your Hollywood Blockbuster AAA style games goodbye.

It seems Microsoft, especially as of late, has switched their focus entirely. What was once "make great games, sell them, invest in new IP to reach new audiences" approach is now a "make every single game playable everywhere, for free, regardless of quality."

This approach will hold the medium back. It will stagnant creativity, growth. Tech won't stop advancing, but NO ONE will be utilizing said tech to its full potential. Advancements in games will be hard to notice, devs will have to scale back their visions - All to make kids, casual gamers who keep FIFA, Madden and COD #1 for all of eternity happy while you and I play second fiddle and get fed sloppy seconds.

Phil needs to go.

This is how most PC gamers feel about console folks in general though 😑.

Games are toy products that exist to take your money. Companies involved are not your childhood best friend or worthy of your delusional highbrow retard devotion, as they push new business models.

How does their positioning on value in the hardware space reduce the quality of games?

Especially when 98%+ games are made from outside developers.

I got warned for trolling and my post deleted for saying most of playstations games in 2023 are also on xbox yet this thread still exists?
That was my first thought when I read the OP for this thread but it's not surprising lately. I got a most of posts my deleted and thread-banned in the Activision Deal OT allegedly for console-warring, and I guarantee nothing I posted was vaguely the magnitude of a console-war rant as this thread.

You can easily make an argument that Sony are attempting to push things forward; PSVR/PSVR2 show real commitment to an area that neither of its console competitors are currently touching.

That's just a fact. And even if (like me) VR isn't your wheelhouse, it deserves credit.
That’s true - I’ve no interest in VR but can’t deny Playstation are the leading gaming companies pushing it forward. If it works out they’ll be well ahead of the competition and kudos to them for bringing that technology more mainstream.

Similarly, people shouldn’t dismiss MS’s efforts with cloud gaming / streaming and gamepass subscription services as not advancing the industry like this thread does.

Gamepass is great for experimental smaller games and so in that area it holds a lot of promise actually.

Are those the games you want to play on your big screen? Absolutely not in my case. Can’t bring myself to sit in front of a big screen and play Vampire survivors. That said these days it’s very normal to see people playing on desk monitors, and in that context it makes a lot more sense.

This is how most PC gamers feel about console folks in general though 😑.
I can see that, and they have every reason to tbh.

Its one of the main reasons I havent bought a capable PC. Consoles hold them back to the point where theres no point investing in one. Havent had a Crysis since Crysis. No devs take advantage of the hardware. Useless.

It sounds dramatic now until it isn't. All the points OP listed are indeed valid. And the people who are acting as if nothing is happening are either not gamers or they are gonna get a rude awakening. Wait till your favorite games turn to mediocre games at best and then see who's worried and who's not.

I am a Playstation gamer at heart simply because their games speak to me more. But I would cheer for Xbox just as much if they can output great games that's closer to my style, such as Hellblade 2 and Lost Odyssey.

I'm not saying Xbox is the problem for the industry, I'm saying GamePass is a problem for the industrty. If Xbox can lose GamePass and put out visually amazing games with incredible story, chatacters and gameplay, I would definitely cheer for Xbox.

I mean competition is always great for the customers, so why wouldn't I? But if Gamepass is going to be a thing, who's gonna compete with GamePass then? Amazon, Apple or Google? You seriously think they'll stand a chance? Google produced shit Stadia, Apple only makes shitty mobile games and Amazon only released 1 noteworthy game. None would be able to compete with Microsoft and definitely not when it keeps buying everything up. Wake up people, if you love gaming, even if you love Xbox, you shouldn't be cheering on GamePass. You're gonna be over the moon happy for the next 5 years, but if GamePass becomes truly big, we're all gonna be left with nothing.

No. Just, no! What on earth makes you guys think if the ABK merger doesn't go through, they will suddenly pull out of the gaming sphere in any way? If anything, they'll go even harder for more developers. They've invested billions in studios and devs (23 studios so far) they've invested heavily in hardware, subscriptions, cloud etc. They aren't going to just pull out. Not a chance.
They will pull out only from hardware......gamepass & cloud will stay.

The ironic part lost in these dickhead anti-Xbox hot takes is that if they addressed the concern troll issues and actually got rid of Phil, or just let him retire which is going to happen sooner rather than later; his replacement could very well be more competitive and a traditionally ruthless corporate shill in favor of console warring.

Be careful what you wish for, clowns. Microsoft might actually go out of their way to buy your childhood sweetheart corporate delusion and force you to own an Xbox platform to get precious sequels and reboots to your favorite toys.

Is this the same Microsoft that turned down GTA as an exclusive and tried to buy Nintendo? Tone deaf.

You said ‘nobody was asking for Spider-Man games’. You’re also the one complaining about;

Why do people love to circle jerk and take what other people said out of context to drag the conversation down to a level where they can respond to a statement after its misrepresented?

Looks like that’s exactly what you’ve just done yourself?

I've always viewd Game Pass as their incentive to bring in new players biding them some time to shore up more teams to make them some first party games - something that's been taking a painfully long time as many have experienced these past few years. That said it is frustrating we haven't seen more of all that work yet. "they're coming" is incredibly obnoxious each year with no shows, but they are coming, which sadly for them means they really have to come in strong so people don't feel they waited forever for something mediocre.

Nor do I think going multiplatoform is going to hurt them when we've seen sucess with cross gen and the massive sales Nintendo has with the Switch. Criticizing what we haven't seen yet is a bit premature particularly thinking it's going to hold anything back. We just don't know yet what's in store.

I wish I had the amount of free time that is wasted on these anti Xbox posts. Imagine being an adult and letting things you dislike bother you this much. If you like PlayStation and Nintendo there is nothing Microsoft is doing that is stopping you from playing your PlayStation or Nintendo.

The fanboying is strong with this one.

Doesn't matter if Sony has a 2:1 or 3:1 lead, somehow, the 3rd place console maker is such a threat to gaming that the will destroy it all and laugh as it burns.

Time to put the games away for a bit and go outside and get some sun.
