MS Earnings Call - FY23Q3 | 4% decline for MS Gaming, Xbox HW down 30%

Snake29

RSI Employee of the Year

This is literally what MS/Xbox is. No creativity like Steve Jobs said in the past. Xbox is even completely missing a identity atm....

You are in their eco system and giving them money.
Ok, but Sony has games on PC, Switch and Xbox, but those players don't count as PSN users.

Microsoft plays with numbers to fit their narrative. When trying to get the Activision deal approved, they showed charts showing PS being 5 times more popular than Xbox. When trying to build consumer confidence they share MAU numbers in a way that makes them look to be the most popular platform.

When they were market leader, they were tweeting sales numbers weekly and how those compared to PS. When they fell behind, they started to refuse to share sales numbers altogether and started giving random stats like the number of monsters killed, etc.

You have to take any numbers they give out with a grain of salt, because they are presenting them in the way they want to be seen, not actual reality. It's no different here counting people playing Minecraft on all the platforms they did before the acquisition as "Xbox" users. (But, when they need the court to see them as weak, those users no longer count).

When will xbox console sales start not smelling like crap?
When will they announce the new number of gamepass subscribers?
Or will you also analyze when PS5 sales outsell Xbox S|X by 3-5 times worldwide?

Why are Playstation sales relevant in the thread about Xbox numbers? Does everything have to be console wars? Did you also ignore where they state the reason hardware revenue dropped is due to supply shortages? They'll announce the new number when they're ready. But something tells me it's more impressive than you might think. I think they could be waiting for Activision to close to announce the new number.

Here's a hint, though.

Gaming revenue from subscriptions reached nearly $1 billion in the quarter. No way Game Pass isn't the biggest contributor with north of 25 million subscribers.

To add, their one non-Bethesda release scheduled for this year, Forza Motorsport is (pardon the bad pun) stuck in neutral.

I still believe it will release this yearbut it’s not a very good look when it went from “Spring 2023” to “First Half 2023” and now just “2023” as of their developer direct a couple months ago.

Microsoft really needs some of their other acquisitions and studios to begin paying off. All their exclusives from Bethesda this year are games that were in development before the acquisition happened.

Do you want a monopoly/anti-trust lawsuit that would actually be successful and might end up forcing Microsoft to split off the Xbox brand? Because your plan would certainly accomplish that goal.

How is it a monopoly? There is still iOS and Android smart phones. Sorry, but consoles are still a niche gaming market of about 200 million sales between Xbox and PlayStation in a 7 to 10 year time span.

I've said it in the past and I will say it again... Phil Spencer is doing a lousy job in front on the Xbox division.
Microsoft's biggest mistake was firing Don Mattrick. Xbox 360 gave the PS3 a good fight with Don Mattrick in front... many exclusives, big 3rd party exclusives, including exclusive JRPG's.
In spite of the controversial Xbox One presentation, Microsoft should have sticked with their guns and continue with Mattrick.

With Phil Spencer, the Xbox was gotten worse and worse as time goes by...
The biggest surprise for me is how Phil Spencer still has a job in front of the Xbox division.

Ouch, not surprising. There is not a lot of hype around Xbox at the moment. They would benefit from delivering on their plan to have quarterly major releases.

Considering Mattrick moved into his head role of Xbox in 2007, I would not be so quick to give him the credit for much of 360's success. He did move a bunch of units in 2010 with the Kinect, but I wouldn't call that a win for the "more than casual" audience. I would argue that the ,more than casual, 360 gamers suffered under his leadership.

I am speaking for myself, but there weren't many releases 2009 and on that came from Xbox 1st party that I found very appealing outside of Halo 4 and maybe a few others I can't think of.

Do me a favor and learn the difference between “monopolistic practices” and “monopoly”.

MSIE wasn’t a monopoly.
Windows wasn’t a monopoly.
Yet Microsoft was found guilty of leveraging them for monopolistic practices to damage competitors.

In your fantasy world where Microsoft buys up everyone and locks Sony out, they would be committing the exact same shit they did with Windows (via PC OEMs) and MSIE (via Windows integration) in the 1990s and would absolutely be raked over the coals. While ignorant console warriors such as yourself will still be screaming “bUt tHeY aReNt A mOnOpOlY!”

Steve Jobs was jealous and petty as fuck. I like the Mac, iPhone and iPad but he can be a real prick at times.

Fact is MS identity is being the biggest B2B company. You can’t create a company successfully nowadays without going through MS.

Also, MS stocks are way up after hours. I guess investors are liking what they are doing.

Don Mattrick redemption arc incoming?
Stay tuned.

Being monopoly means they are the only ones supplying games clown. You do realize there are more publishers besides the big 4 (Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and Take 2), correct? Also, Sony has a lot of studios still so no need to get upset.

The Xbox 360 was the Xbox console that sold the most until now... went neck and neck with the PS3.
Did the Xbox ONE go neck and neck with the PS4?
Do you see the Xbox Series going neck and neck with the PS5?

Phil has to go. Microsoft need someone else, doesn't have to be Don Mattrick.

Xbox One was Don Mattrick's creation. He drove Xbox into the dirt, dude. Xbox has never recovered.

Do you realise that most of the original Xbox One's controversial ideas are being implemented in present day consoles?

We will see a year from now. If hardware stays flat then it’s a big problem for the console division.

A year from now? Try the next few quarters. If xbox isn't up yoy with starfield, they are well and truly fucked. Acquisitions mean fuck all if you cant even sell your own console.

That is, in the next quarter, the drop in xbox equipment will not be 30%, but 28%?
That's a definite success, mate.
And again, we don't have gamepass numbers. It's unfortunate that Microsoft has not been able to do at least one good PR for xbox in the last month.
