Naughty Dog Announces Development Delay on TLoU MP (MP Dev Team 'Significantly Scaled Down,' Bloomberg Reports)

Well, I guess that's why they weren't included in the showcase. Sad to hear but I'd rather have the game ready and finished than half assed.
I said this in the redfall thread or maybe it was the Phil Spencer thread where he said that they realized in october of last year that the game didnt connect with players so they decided to patch up the bugs and ship it knowing it stank. I said then that they shouldve cancelled it.

I think Jimbo should cancel this game. Sometimes things dont pan out. PvE is almost impossible to get it right. Many have tried, only bungie has somewhat succeeded and as someone who put in 1000 hours into D1 and D2, i can tell, everyone hate plays those games anyway.

lets go back to SP and get those out instead.

Can I get a link to back up these claims? I've never seen an announcement for a gameplay demo.

We know they're working on Factions > < That haven't shown me Factions so it's a delay... Because I said so.

I'm prepared to stand corrected if you can give me a source to back up ANY of your claims.
Jason posted a tweet about it.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
They knew Jason's article was coming out so they quickly drew an apology template on MS Paint and tweeted it.

Sneaky Dogs.

Apparently Bungie looked over a build of the game and reported back saying it looked dogshit 💀💀💀
No offense but Bungie employed every dirty trick in the book to get players hooked. Especially in the early days. I get that GaaS is supposed to retain players for years but i loved Factions and played it non stop for months. Sometimes that should be good enough. You dont need to retain players for years by hiring psyhcology professionals and making people addicts.

Sonys live service push is already beginning to crumble. First a tepid response to the new announcements and now a delay of Factions. Suicide Squad got them all shook. Love to see it.
Hope the whole live service model burns and i hope more gaass games bomb like avengers. Really hammer home the point to bone headed publishers that trying to play the lottery with these battle pass games that take half a decade to make, in the hopes that just ONE can be the next fortnite, is unsustainable as fuck

Oh I agree, but Bungie is the king of whatever this service push Sony is going for, so they'll always follow their advice, however unethical their methods may be.

So basically they figured this direction will not make enough money, probably being too niche and different and dark or alienating as compared to all the pink ass tik tok dancing bullshit in the gaas scene. Aka what everyone wanted from it really. What now?

What an absolute fucking trainwreck.

So this gen from ND we are getting
TLOU1 Again
The Last of Us GAAS
Probably a new IP cross gen with Ps6
Thats just the world we live in now in terms of AAA develoment.
Besides IMO this gen will go on for another 5 or 6 years before we see any PS6/Xbox 5. Possibly even longer.

Reading between the lines, the games been cancelled in its current form, if it ever releases, expect a really cut down game,

covid has really done a number on the devs, will it ever recover, I wonder.

This was BAD BAD then.
It's why most of those live service games will be doa.

Live service games aren't easy to make. You need ingredients that can keep people for long term. Doesn't matter how talented a studio is, if you don't have that, your game will suck.

Look at halo f2p mode. That game couldn't retain userbase, despite it being halo.

Man I was looking forward to this. Naughty Dog attention to detail and polish, without the walk and chats and setpieces. I hope they pull it together.

This is actually a good tidbit even though the overall news is shit

Bungie is being properly utilized, so they told ND this game will be a major flop if you drop it.

Ryan and Hulst are only going to release these LS games if they match the output of the first-party exclusives.

So either the project gets canned or when it drops it'll be amazing...

They have had issues because they have never been a two team studio, but the numbers dont lie.

U2 to U3 - 2 years
U3 to TLOU - 2 years
TLOU to U4 - 3 years
U4 to ULL - 1 year
ULL to TLOU2 - under 3 years despite the hack and pandemic affecting shipment of the game delaying it by another month.

2-3 years is really efficient all things considered.

Something changed after 2020. They shouldve begun development on TLOU3 right away but they took over someone else's remake project. Why? Surely they shouldve had their own game lined up. Factions had a separate team that got help from Sony Bend for a while, but what happened to the main TLOU2 team? Why didnt they begun immediately working on their next game?

Looks like Neil went out to do his tv show around that time. I read an article about how he was summoned back to LA from Canada in the middle of shooting the show sometime in 2022 to work on the game. If he wants to go then let him go. Let someone else make video games.

That's over an 11 year period bro. They look productive on paper, but you have a remaster and a DLC expansion in there. U2 - U3 was always going to be a short dev cycle, because the foundation was laid. The releases have been spaced out fairly, but for a studio of that size, I'd hardly call this efficient. Their major releases since the PS4 launched up until today are: U4, and LoU2. From 2016 to 2023, that's the last 7 years. It's all about perspective.

my hot take: following the unprecedented critical/consumer success (& very deservedly so) of the last of us, naughty dog went full-blown prima donna, & this, imo, is just an indication of it finally catching up with them. yes, there are other mitigating factors (gaas, etc), but i still believe them getting high on their own product for years now has ended up taking its toll...
