PlayStation Plus is increasing its pricing globally starting September 6th

I was thinking that as well but it couldn't have hurt them to announce future plans for more value to the service to, y'know, ease the blow of the price increase news. Although I don't see any 1P AAA games being Day 1, maybe they'll hit the service six months later? Still think that's a bad proposition and could eat into B2P sales revenue but, hey, I'm not running SIE so that's little of my own business.

Did think that they could add more 1P AA games Day 1 to the service; problem is Sony doesn't have any internal studios making AA games. Not really, anyway. Maybe they are working on some with 3P through XDEV but since they haven't openly talked about any future software plans 1P-wise post-Spiderman 2 aside from GaaS titles, then we can't even say that is a certainty.
If the plan was to increase day one games, you would think they'd have more first party games to coincide with the price increase. But Spiderman comes out in October? And that's not coming on there soon. It's just a price increase for nothing in return.

It's hard to blame Sony for these this price hikes when a good portion of the replies on this thread read along the lines of; "Everything is going up in price, Sony has to pay bills too. I'm subbed for the next 20 years anyway".

Yea well I'm not a sheep and I'm not paying freaking $80 for cloud saves.

Miss me with that bullshit Sony

These are the hidden coat of having a console. To need to pay for atuff which are free on PC, like online play. For a interval of 6-7 years, from cost pov, a PC might be cheaper.

Not to mention the shit-ton of games that are given away on PC from Epic and GOG. All for nothing!

I can't do it baby, I've been with Sony since day one but each year I get farther and farther away from console gaming it seems. This kinda bullshit I don't need. I don't really play online anyway so no loss.

I can't justify the cost vs my usage. Same with MS. It will wait till I find a good deal on price.

Got damn at that price increase. Needless to say i’m not renewing my Premium nor am I getting Extra. Im going to try to clean up and finish any game I have on Plus Premium that I want to play and that's a wrap for that.

Yep, there's just Spiderman 2 and nothing else 1P-wise. Seems Helldivers 2 has been quietly delayed to 2024, same with Stellar Blade. I'm predicting either Wolverine or Rise of the Ronin miss the 2024 release window.

To put it into perspective, over the past 3-4 months we've gotten more hardware, sales reports, fiscal results, PC ports and non-gaming acquisition announcements from Sony/SIE than reveals of new 1P games (especially non-GaaS/live service titles). It's been pretty lame.

The funny thing is that Sony doesn't have to. Lol.

For sure I understand that it's a business, but a $5-10 hike would've still been substantial for a company that makes bank.

I 100% am expecting incoming headlines to read, "Highest quarter yet for PS+ profits" ...well, yeah, no shit.

I expected a price increase but not a 33% increase, and not to PS+ Essential. Makes MS's Game Pass price increase look modest by comparison.

Guessing they're considering Day 11P releases? Doing Trails for all 1P and big 3P AAA releases in Premium pre-Day 1? They have to be adding more value to justify a price increase this much, but no info on that front. Sony/SIE pre-2022 would have pared this type of news well by, y'know, announcing new features and Day 1 offerings to the tiers, but not current Sony/SIE.

Interested to see how this plays out but if it backfires, it backfires. It is what it is.

They aren’t improving the service, this is just them milking the userbase they have because sub growth has stalled.

This is beyond absurd. Gotta be a sick joke.

The service already isn't that good to begin with, Premium barely justifies its price.
That's just sick, disgusting.

In the same week Starfield will be dropping on Game Pass, Sony does THIS?

My guess, after the price increase.

Essential: 850 sek/år
Extra: 1250 sek/år
Premium: 1500 sek/år

I'm gonna guess more than that. The € price for Extra is going up by 26€, which is 308 SEK, so it's probably gonna be like 1350 SEK.

I cancelled PS+ Essential in January for the first time in over 6 years. Just no point having two subs, even at the Essential tier. This fully cements that beyond all doubt. Guess I'm probably not ever signing up for that again.

The weird thing I never realized about not having Essential is how much it alienates you from the ecosystem entirely. You don't get any of the sale prices either on the store, so you just end up buying less. I'm sure this applies to Xbox as well since they have Gold deals.

I do wonder if they'll want to keep alienating consumers from their sale prices in the future if the bottom tier costs a lot. Seems kind of counterproductive for everyone involved. Only thing I got for PS5 all year is Humanity.
Sub prices will unfortunately go up and down based on demand, how many people they are trying to reach etc etc. In your case, you are more invested in the Xbox ecosystem, so subscribing to PS+ is basically throwing money away. As for your point when it comes to deals that PS+/Xbox gold have, well, yeah, but they are trying to push us towards subscribing, even if we are one of those who like to buy.

I think what they do in the future depends entirely on how many are keeping their subs vs those who are not, where they might push regular sales more often for people to buy stuff.

It all makes sense. If you have put AAA quality GAAS games on the service people are going to pay this much amount. This strategy will work in long term.

How else am i supposed to think about it? It's math.
You should do all of the math. It's A 33% price hike with no justification so far. If your threshold for it being ok is that it's just a little bit of money each week with no expectation of added value for the money then feel free to also drop that much in my PayPal account every week.

The little bits add up.

Feel free to cancel. I'm not arguing with people about a few quid a week extra. I bet most people complaining probably have several subscriptions too. Most of them have gone up recently

I'll just start paying for extra monthly and only for a couple months per year. It really doesn't make sense to engage with it annually at this point, it's more worthwhile to just cram a lot of the games you're interested in the catalogue for those months.

Yes there does seem to be an overreaction to any negative news. Like I had a similar thought wrt the ps portal. Like people complained when they thought it was 299 and then somehow complained even more when they found out it was only 199. So yeah it's weird.

But this is just kind of a slap in the face, because it's not like the service was that good to begin with. It's just price increase for no reason. In the past when people reacted negatively to price increases, they sometimes get them reversed. So they should be vocal.

On one hand they have me over a barrel because i really don't want to lose the 'free' games i've collected over the years

but I think I have to cut it off. I have a massive backlog anyway.

Subscription services can be great, but there has to be a point eventually when people say no to all these price increases

It better be cheaper than GamePass during the June/Nov discounts season otherwise I might go to green ship

Edit: this is just ridiculous, the essential tier is pure scam. They are giving 3 hit/miss games and what should be free from the get-go: online multiplayer for 80 freaking dollars! There's no justifying this price hike. Service hasn't improved in any way.

Only if extra tier is comparable or cheaper than GamePass, I'll consider renewing. Otherwise I am done with this scam.

This is such a fucked up price hike, especially for the person who just wants online play, it was already way too overpriced for a feature that never should have started to be charged for in the first place.

With these kind of prices, I feel like they need to add a forth tier now that JUST has online play with no games, because $80 is absolutely bull shit, and I won't be subscribing to it out of habit anymore. I don't even really play online games, and the ones I do (fortnite and Final Fantasy XIV) don't even require Playstation Plus to play.

1000%. They really need to cut the BS and just make online play free again. Cut every other feature, fine. But to charge $80 every year to just allow full functionality of the console is robbery.
