English speaking reviewers have long given me the impression that they're a lot more jaded about the hobby than the rest of the world. Frankly a lot of reviews nowadays read like the ramblings of someone who's clinically depressed and couldn't even find joy if you put the best thing of all time in front of them. It doesn't just come across in their writing either, other countries just seem to get legitimately more excited for gaming - just watch any Japanese or Brazilian event and the difference in enthusiasm is apparent in people's voices.

There's also a phenomenon that more and more people in English games media get off on being the contrarian. They want to be that one reviewer standing against a sea of perfect 10s with the balls to give it a 7. Problem is that the more people do that, the more the shtick gets old and then you stop trusting reviews altogether. That's made even worse by everyone having to be the 'Consumer Advocacy Man' these days, like Jim Sterling (or whatever the fuck he wants to be called now), just mercilessly shitting on anything with minor flaws as if they're doing some great service to the public.

His other videos. Just another DoomTuber scamming you for subs.

Man.

A rancid putrid turd like TLoU 2 got a 93 MC score.

MC is useful in some respects, and it’s nice when a game you like receives absolute universal gushing praise from critics, but splitting hairs because a game is ‘only’ 88 and not in the 90s is too much for me.

Especially because so many great games are vastly underrated critically and so many crap games, like Halo Infinite, get great scores.

Xbox really never going to have a GOTY contender lol. This isn't even a lock to be nominated now with how many other games have scored the same or higher this year

Obsessing over these ratings is crazy, especially for a Bethesda game. We all know it will be patched and re-released ad infinitum. Not to mention the mods.

It can't really be scored for a minimum of 3 years imo.

Back in the day you might get one GamePro or EGM review and jump in.

Today is for celebrating the release of a new sandbox for us all.

Reviews are underperforming at 88/100 ? what ?

Per Sony, games like CoD are the best system sellers and the last bunch of CoD's have all scored in the 70's in aggregate reviews.

You're trying too hard :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Starfield doesn't have brand recognition such as Cod to back it up so thats false equivalence and a weird comparison.

Starfield is a new kid in the block so it will be treated as such .

But the point is that you are trying to back up that accusation. You ARE saying something...
Not at all. I was highlighting the disparity between IGN's collection of sites and their individual review scores - where the US score is clearly a demonstable outlier. So, there is at least some evidence because the IGN US review is a statistical anomaly for both the publication and the reviewer themselves. Does that mean that, with objective honesty, the claim is thus irrefutably true? Not at all. But it's worth noting.
...you’re speculating because you’re upset. You’re upset because you’ve come to self-identify with the Xbox brand and you consider that review a personal attack.
Oh boy, you went 0-100 there, didn't you? I'm posting because it's hilarious reading people contort spacetime in their attempts to explain that Starfield's 87MC is actually quite bad, and that IGN - fucking IGN! - is somehow fair and unquestionable.
Get a grip. Nobody cares.
You're posting multiple times per page in multiple Starfield threads. It would seem at least one person cares.
... is Bethesda's review code practices one of the reasons game currently sitting at 87? who am i to say
Objectively speaking, yes it is. If they didn't have a practice of sending review codes, it would be at zero because no one could have reviewed it. Thank you for your input, I guess?

Reviewers were really keen on Infinite, weren’t they?

I…..was not.

First of all, what he actually said is "I played Spiderman once, but ill play Starfield over and over". Lets stop misquoting please.

Second, making determinations of any sort about a game you haven't played even a single second of is ridiculous to me. Clearly you guys keep finding defensible logic to take to the internet to post your conclusions without one second played though, so have at it I guess.

I didn't quote anything. I accurately summarized his sentiment about the game's replayability, which is a staple for Bethesda's games. If you don't get it then you just don't get it.

I’m hearing that it runs at 1080p/30 on a 3080 without FSR2. Sounds like an optimization disaster on PC. I’m glad I didn’t preorder this on Steam. I’ll probably try it on GamePass PC but I knew the decision not to launch with DLSS was a red flag. I’m glad I didn’t preorder on Steam. I may even wait for the DLSS mod to drop before giving it a go on my 4090.

The game looks like a decent game with some obvious flaws. I was expecting it to score in the 80s and it looks like I was right. Bethesda and their fanboys overhyped this as a Game of the Generation or GOTY and they were off. This is why I always say not to hype games based on what Todd Howard promises but instead on what he delivers.

If a studio like rockstar or Nintendo puts out an 88, it will be concerning. But it's pretty par for the course for Bethesda. Exceeds expectations even, considering what they pulled with f76.

This landed a little less than expected but still good.

People really should stop the stupid overhyping “game of the millennium” crap, because that was pretty much put to rest today. It’s another good game in a really great 2023. It’s not some seminal sea change moment that we’ll be playing for the next decade. It’s a 20 hour single player campaign with a lot of other ancillary stuff that’s not as good that you can sink your teeth into.

I expect this to be a one and done and onto the next. And that’s perfectly fine.

Glad to hear the combat is supposedly good. Hate to hear the exploration isn’t. “see that mountain over there? You can’t go there”

Like all games there’s pro’s and con’s. Some people legitimately laughed at me for saying Harry Potter was in the same conversation as this game. Guess what? It is, and many other games for that matter

"None of that happened" you quoted me quoting someone who was doing just that, and literally listed your reasons as to why its ok for you to say youll like Starfield despite never played any of it.....lol

You quoted ME and said I was heaping praise on the game, which I never did because obviously I haven’t played it yet. Idk how I got wrapped up in your personal meltdown in this thread but you’re saying some really weird things.

You literally quoted me. Hold your clicker over that Reply button, see what it says? lol

There is nothing to get. Bethesda has been inconsistent. Skyrim and Fallout 76 are not the same. Even if they were, its not hard to grasp someone (me) thinking its weird to praise a game you have not played a single second of.

an 88 metacritic is like being given rich tea biscuits to dunk in your cuppa

Just all round terrible

I will be playing this for a while. Also fo76 isn’t a BGE game.
For the record, you quoted me first. And these are both you. "I never heaped praise" "I will be playing this for awhile. I know that for certain despite having not played it yet, and here is my list of reasons why"

lol.

What does “heaping praise” mean to you? Because none of that is heaping praise.

If FROMsoft came out and said they were making a sci fi game. Or Larian came out and said they were making a Planescape game, I could tell you right now that I will play them both and very likely more than once.

Console wars have some of you going full retard.

I disagree. I also beat Spiderman once and never really thought about it again or played miles morales. I enjoyed my time with it but that’s it. One of the first things I did when I got a steam deck was install morrowind and OpenMW lol. I will definitely play Starfield more than once.

Idk Benny. Call me crazy here, but when you haven't played the game for one second yet here you are saying "I will definitely play it more than once unlike Spiderman", that seems like some heaping of praise. Haven't played many games more than once that I thought were meh......

BennyBlanco BennyBlanco never said anything about how much he loves this game. Just said he is going to be playing it for quite a while based on it being a Bethesda game and other factors. Plenty of Bethesda fans here, including myself and HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 , have expressed that same sentiment. So what? Why does that bother you?
I dont get his issue either.

I actually stopped going back and forth with him and he seems to be an obvious troll at this point

Listening to the Defining Duke podcast and the conversation they have is really interesting and makes me wonder how many hours those who gave it a lower score did put into the game.

I think it will be universally agreed that the game is just not good for the first 4 - 5 hours. Nothing epic, no big opening moment like when you get out of the Vault in Fallout 3 or out of the cave in Skyrim, it's just very boring and filled with tutorials. When it comes to openness and exploration it also seems like this is the least Bethesda game ever, you don't have this feeling of "here's a world/universe to explore, do as you please" like you have in their other games.

What they all agree on in the podcast is that the game gets better and better as you play and shouldn't be played like the other Bethesda games where you can ignore the main quest and drop 100 hours doing other things. Not that you can't do that in Starfield but focusing on the main story first seems the way to go to actually grasp and understand what the game is about. They also all praise the writing, the stories (which for a Bethesda game is good to hear) the insane amount of dialogues choices and amazing quests. Tons of random stuff to do and find as well.

There's definitely flaws and let down but it seems like a super solid game and tons of stuff that'll keep you busy for hundreds of hours. Hearing about the quality of the writing and all the praise they give about the quest's quality and variety is making me excited for the game.

yes, you are crazy. That’s genuinely not even close to heaping praise. At the very least I will play it once and then again when the total conversion mods hit. You’re salty as fuck and I have no idea why.

I am crazy for waiting to try a game before being certain I will replay the full thing multiple times? OK bro. Whatever lol

hmm lower than i guessed, considering their review-copy tactics, guess itll balance to low 80s after all the reviews pour in
still hyped though, scfi rpg is my cup of rpg
yea, love me some scifi bullshit. I'm frankly disappointed that there aren't more of them. Scifi-punk aka like Arika style is so fucking badass and has so much potential, i think.

What an astute comparison of two games which had the same amounts of hype around them. This one's a smart cookie. :messenger_smirking:

Give me that tool you're using to measure the amount of hype.

You in particle were showering both of them with praise even before you got your hands on them. Equal treatment and love for both of them I'd say. I guess your hype for all games from MS are the same :p
