If we look at the PC side of metacritic that only has one Xbox branded site listed and the score is 87.

Fan sites have always been part of the equation for first party games. Why is it different now versus any other first party game?
Must have a lot less reviews for PC then as the Xbox fansites reviews are much higher than average, but the overall Xbox score is much lower.

this should be fun...

How so and what games are cinematic movies?

Starfield could do with some of that cinematic flare. How much of a better game would it be with realistic animations and better dialogue delivery? With characters and story you actually give a shit about? It's just so damn boring that I don't care about forwarding the story. There's no motivation to keep playing. Exploration sucks. Story and characters suck. Gameplay is basic. The gunplay isn't satisfying and weighty. They should have spent all that time developing elder scrolls VI and evolving their formula.

It's weird that certain people make cinematic moments in games a bad thing now. When it's always been viewed as a good thing, if done right.

They made cutscenes with good dialogue, visuals and animations? Movie game! Should have stuck with PS2 level cutscenes! That would be better!

How can massive improvements in these areas be a bad thing? Maybe if Bethesda did the same thing, starfield would be a much much better game right now.

The ones on the right don’t annoy me as much as the ones on the left. Giving Starfield 9.5 or 10s is some clown world shit.

Ya know what seems to be missing from a lot of these reviews? Comments on the sound and music in the game. We're getting one of the best game soundtracks ever with Starfield (not to mention amazing sound design), and I saw no mention of music or sound quality in the recent negative reviews.

even for someone liking the game, a 10 for this, is indeed clownery.
game has glaring core issues nobody can deny, because of the fossil tech they are stuck with.
giving it a 10 is basically saying
“keep using it for next elder scrolls too, see you in a decade!”

Clownery? Lol. It's an opinion. There will indeed be people who play this game and think it's a 10 (it's an easy 9 for me so far at 50 hours or so in). Also, review scores aren't meant to be messages to developers, IMO. That's a bit pretentious.

Wish they would comment on that more in game reviews as well. But oh you know, "professional reviewers."

Exactly. Try playing any game with the volume set to 0 and tell me what you think. It's a literal third of the game experience.

EDIT: I also wonder how many of these reviewers are playing in an office with the sound turned down or with lots of work distractions. That would certainly change the way I feel about a game.

No, it isn't.

Games in the upper 90s are not propped up because they are scored relatively similar by other sites not skewed to the brand.

I mean.....I see 9.5 and 10/10s for HFW from PlayStation sites. How is that any different?

Let me ask you this. Which review do you trust more? One from an Xbox fan excited about the game who plays it on their own time likely on a large screen with a good set of headphones? Or one from a game journalist who doesn't own an Xbox that goes into the office to play on the console they don't like to play? My guess is we're getting a lot of both of these, so the Opencritic aggregate seems fair to me. I think whatever your bias is will choose one reviewer or the other, but I know I'm more likely to agree with the Xbox fan.

well like it or not, its probably the “thing” that’ll light the fire under bethesdas ass in the end.

you can bet this being the worst reviewed bethesda rpg will sure have consequences next time around. and hopefully so.

you don’t get that by willfully ignoring the glaring problems and showering them 10s

I wonder — has any other Xbox exclusive been this propped up by sites with Xbox in the name? A sincere curiosity.
Probably not, but there are more Xbox sites reviewing games now than in the past. Xbox also communicates with them a lot like Sony used to do back in 2013, so there is a strong loyalty developing on that end.

Most likely. I don't usually make purchases based on the views of reviewers, or even gamers, and am enjoying Starfield for the most part (a bit bland, but not terrible). It's just interesting to see the disparity between what came before release and now.

What I like is a good convo and you brought none. Oh well.

Steam reviews and whining on Twitch and YouTube until a consensus is formed will do a whole lot more (Bethesda is already responding based on their future updates). Also, a reviewer is there to tell someone if the game is worth playing or not, IMO.

That's what I figured (thank you for actually engaging my question instead of responding like a drunk man taking an eye exam).

In all seriousness, the situation surrounding Starfield definitely feels like an anomaly. Either that or I just haven't noticed such a discrepancy until this.

:p

We good, I get what you were saying. I honestly just meant it seemed different than usual. As in, I didn't remember seeing this many Xbox sites review an exclusive before.

That's cool. I was in the process of replying that I think our posts got crossed somehow. Wasn't trying to instigate anything. All good here as well.

You're probably just in a bubble. Social media does that. It used to be the other way around with lots of PlayStation people hobnobbing with the executives. That all kind of changed once those executives started leaving or getting repositioned. Now they're very distant in comparison. Also, if you're super worried that it's inflating Xbox scores, most Xbox fans look at mainstream games media as the opposite side of that coin.

However you feel, I think Starfield sitting at an 85 or so is pretty fair when you factor in expectations. I think expectations always hurts Todd Howard's games more than anything else.

Oh no, it's not a big deal from that angle. I'm actually enjoying the game. But, I also get why a good chunk of folks are disappointed (at least relative to a good deal of the hype). As far as what scores it "deserves", I have no opinion on that.

Yeah, it's just made-up fantasies that PlayStation fans are unfairly reviewing the game.

I guess, all those 26% negative reviews on Steam (who can play the game and did buy it) are also salty PlayStation fans. And the various outlets giving negative and below-80 reviews (who have also played and finished the game) are also salty PlayStation fans who can't play the game.

There was just a major, I'd say intentional, misreading of what I originally posted there. I never made mention of or even implied anything about those that have posted reviews of the game on Steam or anywhere on the net. My comment was a direct reply to someone talking about the state of this thread (#1660424 here on NeoGAF), not public sentiment about the reviews or the game itself.

Started out as GOTG/GOTY now merely GOTW with recent releases
True plus it exposed the intentions of those review sites that gave it a 10. If MS didn't loosen the purse strings to get them this would be in the 70's. Feels like it was hyped to the wazoo and now it's come and gone.

Yeah, it's the worst reviewed of the large, mainline Bethesda RPGs, assuming we exclude Fallout 76.

Skyrim 96 (damn, surprised it scored this high)
Oblivion 94 (ditto)
Fallout 3 93
Fallout 4 88
Morrowind 87 (my personal favorite, though it was pretty rough on Xbox)
Starfield 83
Fallout 76 49

(Those are all Xbox Metacritic scores, to keep comparisons consistent.)

p.s. I don't think the review scores will cause Bethesda to lose much sleep. As long as sales are good, I expect they will continue on their current trajectory. As a subsidiary of Microsoft now, they don't have to worry so much about their reputation or critical reception.

so you got me curious & I checked on Metacritic, HFW has the following 9.5/10s from PlayStation sites (I may have missed some, I had to Google a few I wasn’t sure to see if they were PlayStation focused or not such as Sixth Axis)

100s - PlayStation Lifestyle, PSX Brasil
95 - PlayStation Universe
90 - Push Square

in contrast for Starfield you have the following

100 - Xbox Addict
99 - Generación Xbox
98 - SomosXbox
97 - XboxEra, & MondoXbox
90s - True Achievement, Pure Xbox, and Windows Central (+ Xbox Achievements with an 89)

Okay, fair enough.

But I think it's okay to talk about reviews -- positive or negative -- in the review thread. I don't believe criticizing people, or the entire thread, just because people are talking about reviews is the right thing to do.

If review scores are going down (from 88 to 83 now in 15 days), the major discourse will of course be negative.
