Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Atomic heart is super uneven (except some sections like the intro), but the high are impressive for an AA made by a russian team at their first big game.

My brain automatically adjust to AA expectations when i play, so this is why you see me praise way more AA games than AAA games, i'm easily impressed by small devs punching above their weightclass but i'm super critical with devs like insomniac.

Thanks for response ...do you think devs will bother going back and patching games once the Pro comes out? This is a big concern I have. When PS5 came out devs were extremely slow to update games for it and many games never got updated. We won't be able to play games like Avatar, Jedi Survivor, Cyberpunk, and Alan Wake 2 at 60 fps/quality without a patch ..
good question. trying to think of some 2015 games that got a pro patch.

Witcher 3 was released in May 2015 and got a pro patch but only after x1x came out. I think Rise of tomb raider was also patched on the Pro. But most 2015 sony games like Bloodborne, The order, and Until Dawn never got patched. Batman AK also came out in 2015 and didnt get patched, but after the flurry of DLCs, it might get patched after 8 years lmao.

If it makes you feel any better division also came out in march 2016 and was patched a month after the pro came out in december 2016. They also patched Division 2 for the PS5 and XSX to put in a 60 fps mode.

I dont think AC syndicate got a pro patch either, but I think devs have realized just how easy it is to unlock framerates in existing games and if they ship with an unlocked vrr toggle or DRS, it will probably run at 60 fps without a patch. pretty sure the Spiderman 2 vrr 40+ fps mode that runs at 1440p at all times, but has DRS built in to hit native 4k. It never even remotely gets there so i was wondering why even add it. I guess they know the pro is coming and shipping the game with an unlocked vrr mode with DRS today saves them from releasing a patch next year.

Dude thats nothing. My feed is full of some amazing NPC conversations and easter eggs. He joins a bunch of hippies doing yoga, gives an improptu interview to a journalist, and my favorite was stopping at a random arrest of a bunch of criminals with one criminal and a lady going back and forth about his innocence. Oh and this one guy was shaken up after a car accident and the paramedic took him through concussion tests on the streets while everyone honked behind them.

Every time i go on the ground, i hear conversations all around me. Its not just people calling out to me like they do in RDR2, its random strangers talking to each other. And no, not the precanned ones like the nanny conversation that went viral, just people talking to each other. it feels so real. they clearly put in a lot of effort into the open world.

Amazing detail, gi from flashlight and it even illuminates spores.
Amazing water, hdr, clean 4k at around 40 lfc unlocked fps. No grain or break up in sight. Clear ssr with perfect sharp cube maps fallback. Honestly looks better than rt.
Frankly I can’t believe how good it looks and runs. So much sharper, cleaner and faster than aw2. On console? No contest.
And dear god the dualsense use. I gotta play more than the tutorial.

Only one gripe. Joel’s face looks like ass in any shadow. Everything else and other people look good but Joel can look like a muppet. But I think it has more to do with his face than tech. Aw2 doesn’t allow you to see the face at all.

I need to try tlou2 too again since I remember it looking better than part 1 but it can’t be right.
Unless part 1 drops after the tutorial chapter, it is good looking… or rather up up there

I'm going to reiterate that I think PC vs consoles is going to be a whole different ballgame for the rest of this gen. Consoles just aren't going to be able to keep up with the RT/PT/DLSS/Ray Reconstruction/Frame Gen that high-end PC gaming offers.

I am talking about ps5 here.
Don’t care if aw2 on a 4090 looks better. Of course it does. But it’s not that huge gap between part 1 still.

I just remembered this was a thing at the start of last gen when these pics of skyrim with a 100 mods came out and people said next gen consoles (ps4 x1) could never handle these. it took some time, but they were easily topped by witcher 3 then uncharted 4 and horizon, and in fact, halo infinite looked a lot like it and was crucified for looking too poor.

I'm actually more looking forward to things like physics, animations, AI, hit reaction, gore systems, getting pushed more so than just pure fidelity. Other games will push pure fidelity, eventually. we need a game that pushes these things to an unseen level.

Right, kinda what I meant by innovation. I hope they expand on the amazing AI that Red Dead 2 had. Nobody seems to give a fuck about AI behavior except Rockstar and ND.

I’m playing it. The fact that the environments in many cases look better than most all the first party output this gen is crazy to me. How did an AA team make that happen. Plus they’re more destructible in many ways…

This. Red Dead Redemption 2 felt like two battling game design philosophies. You had amazing, immersive open world where you could go wherever and do whatever. And then you had some of the most restrictive missions that punished you for even trying to think and do things your way.

My main expectation is for GTA VI to be a better game: give me an objective, give me a sandbox and let me loose.

Cool shots. Contrast seems to be high but I guess that’s up to personal preference. Sadly, there’s no photo mode in RoboCop so every screenshot is in game. You point your character and take a snap.

I think in a year with ps5pr0 launched it will be the case for most graphics intense games, just so 60fps console only crowd got no excuse- wanna play at 60 on console-get a pr0.

As long as a pro model gives a 60fps option, I'm fine. That's almost a given that GTA6 will be capped at 30fps on base consoles. And tbh, I'm not even convinced Rockstar will bother with a performance mode on the ps5 pro, these fuckers haven't even released a 60fps patch for rdr2.
 
I still say people really need to invest in a really good TV if they want to see what this gen can really do.
It's still a big leap over what the last-gen launch systems could offer and IMO we've yet to see both consoles really pushed to their limits.

Well, I don't know. Games nowadays can't even maintain decent resolution without using this shitty fsr2 and can barely do ray tracing. Add 60fps in the mix and you have PS4+ visuals. I'd say their limits have already been reached actually.

It cant be helped, generational jump in gpu was really small this gen, so from ps4's 1080p30 to even 1440p60 it takes up so much gpu resources nothing much is left for bells and whilstels.
Quick math 1080p30 to 1440p60(native) is 178% of pixels, x2 coz of 60 fps so same assets/game, just from 1080p30 to 1440p60 requires over 350% gpu power(so 3,5x stronger gpu).
Again- ps5pr0 to the resque.

Flawed logic - the utilization of new rendering paradigms does not neccesitate lower framerate target.

Perfect example - GTA 6 30fps mode will look significantly better than GTA 5 30fps mode on PS5/Series X console simply because of the 10+ years of advanced rendering leap between 2013 and 2024/2025.

I still have my XBox One PS4 and going back to play on them, is utterly painful on a modern TV
Really people need to play some of the games on the old base consoles to see how big of a jump we have had.

So many here loved the PS2 so many of its games couldn't even handle 480P (which the DC could) and people talk of a lack of jumps, it makes me laugh :p

That's what I've been saying for a while.
On console I'd rather have slightly worse "graphics" but with a nice sharp IQ and solid performance vs better "graphics" with a soft grainy image, shimmering, notorious FSR artifacting, frame rate drops and 60fps modes struggling to hit their target even running at sub 1080p resolutions, etc.
I really think visuals on console games are only going to go downhill for here as devs push better tech at the cost of image quality, resolution and performance (maybe the rumored Ps5 pro will help with this)

On PC if you've got a high end rig that can run the nicer graphics without sacrificing image quality and performance it's another story.

Some kind of physics simulation. Destruction , water, weather or traffic

Why PS4.5 visuals? RDR2 was easily one of the best of last gen, why wouldn't they push visuals the same way for this gen?

A little off topic but who else thinks that this cross-shaped menu for quick select sucks? I much prefer a wheel design because:

1) It only takes 1 button to switch it on and off, leaving 3 other buttons for other interactions
2) You can access things quicker: press and hold to get the wheel, select with a stick, let off and boom
3) You can add more items to the wheel vs. a cross. Starfield is also using a cross and it's ridiculous how many clicks you need to perform to access stuff
