Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Really want to see what kind of graphics improvements they gonna have in this remaster

Robust shadow system is a must for me. The GI is actually pretty great still. It's the shadows or lack thereof that reveals TLOU2s age.

I can't wait for the inevitable AW2 vs TLOU2 comparisons.

RT shadows would be very nice. I'd be happy with that plus a higher resolution at 60 fps.

The shadow quality in some areas was really poor. Like with Abby when you're at the Stadium and some sections after that I just remember them being very low res and breaking up.

Hopefully there will be more improvements but I don't it. I'll be disappointed if it's only 1440p/60.

They said that true 4k in fidelity mode only I think it gonna be 2160p /30fps fidelity mode and 1440p/60 fps performance mode

Its 4k 30 fps vs 1440p 60 fps.

They just upped the settings a la pc high settings . No rt or anything major like that. Insomniac did far more for the Spider-Man remaster.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered will feature enhanced graphics, including native 4K output(1) in Fidelity Mode, 1440p upscaled to 4K(1) in Performance Mode, an Unlocked Framerate option for TVs that support VRR, increased texture resolution, increased Level-of-Detail distances, improved shadow quality, animation sampling rate, and more. It all brings the world of Part II’s story to life in richer and smoother detail, from the snow-swept mountains of Jackson, Wyoming to the rainy cityscape of Seattle, Washington, and should make a first visit or a return trip to the complex journeys of Ellie and Abby all the more engrossing.

Yeah, some of the interiors needed more oomph and better production values for sure. I think this is where modern AAA games especially Sony games begin to stand out. The sets they put effort into have kind of spoiled us. I honestly hate the stop and start nature of TLOU2 but there is no doubt that the stadium level with Abby and walking through Tommy's town as Ellie made you feel part of a living breathing world.

Robocop nails the outdoor levels with just the right amount of atmosphere and detail, but indoor areas seem to be lacking. But then again, it is a $50 budget game after all.

This level is a great example. I am sure robocop has better lighting and asset quality in its police station level but this feels so much more expensive. It's almost unfair to compare it to robocop. I think we've been spoiled.

P.S This is slightly off topic, but I kept thinking about why i dropped Dead Space and so many other gamepass games before finishing while beating woke fests like sony games with dozens of walking segments. I think it's the production values. They are just so far ahead of everyone else in the business, aside from maybe rockstar, that even next gen looking games feel dated in comparison to their cross gen games.

Well said

That doesn't sound too bad ..so long as they're not gonna charge full price..and if it's 1440p upscaled to 4k that would be an upgrade over what we have now which is just a flat 1440p. I'm not convinced it'll be 1440p upscaled to 4k tho because ND has never used an upscaling solution before ..

So its a 10$ upgrade for the people that own the PS4 version, which is the same as UC4R. So its gonna be higher res with better AF with maybe slightly sharper reflections.

Its only a $10 upgrade, consider this a bonus. Save the heavy work for the new SP game.

Insomniac put a whole lot of effort into the Spider-Man Remaster that could/should have gone into Spider-Man 2.

Probably ..I'll be disappointed ..I always am by these things (except for Spiderman remastered- the one time we got a real Sony remaster this gen)

That effort did go to SM2, the updated textures, character models and RT effects where all implemented in SM2 also thanks to the remaster.

The city is the best Ive seen in a game from above/while slinging. But the character models in cutscenes and non-set piece cutscenes in general looked legitimately unfinished

I think naughty dog true new rendering graphics engine and features well be in their next new title and may be some features from it will be in last of us online project

Insomniac at launch:
- RT reflections
- New strand based hair
- Better character models
- Way more traffic
- Way more NPCs

ND 3 years after PS5 launch:
- No RT shadows
- same character models
- slightly better shadows, textures and AF.

I gave insomniac a lot of shit over the past year or so but ND is just coasting. Just a disastrous last three years for Sony's premiere studio or should i say ex-premiere studio. GG has beaten them in graphics. SSM in storytelling and insomniac in everything else.

If they are a no-show at Keighley's awards and i think they will be there with a fake CG trailer being passed off as realtime, but if they are not there, we should just write them off until 2027-2028.

typically id agree because i dont care for remasters and dlcs, but if you're doing it, do it right. Just turning up settings is not good enough after 3 years of dev time. From a premiere studio. GG did a lot of work with horizon FW's PS5 port as well. Better GI, hero lighting, better foliage, better foliage draw distance.

And plenty of cross gen games have gotten ray traced reflections or shadows in their PS5 versions.
- Control
- Watchdogs
- Deathloop
- RE Village
- Guardians of the Galaxy
- Metro Exodus
- Callisto
- cyberpunk

If these devs can put in the extra effort required to implement RT, why not THE best sony studio? And i dont think they charge $10 for these upgrades either.

Im mostly just pissed that they wouldnt even put back what they took out. just lame.

I really didn't like what they did graphically until now in ps5 but I believe in them and i think their next game will be great graphically even if it won't match their reveal trailer for that next game it will be the best looking game by the of its release like every generation.

Too early to judge, we gotta wait on their next SP game. Im not judging them until that game is shown. They won't and shouldn't be putting a lot of effort into these remakes. They are cash grabs probably mandated by greedy ass Jim Ryan.

Sure Spider-Man Remastered had RT reflections, etc... But that resulted in cutscenes in SpiderMan 2 looking literally unfinished. Thats not a good trade off. And the stealth design was straight out of a 2002 game. We can essentially guarantee you that will not happen in whatever game ND has cooking next. It will look and play next gen in every department. Unlike the other studios, where they are great at one thing, but another thing is unfinished.

Also SSM just took the ND blueprint for story telling, they are not better story tellers.

This scene stands out for the lack of AO and depth, but it grabs the attention for other juicy details

YeRLxIS.jpg
A new set of Lost Levels in Part II Remastered allow players a unique chance to check out some playable sequences previously cut from the game. These aren’t fully finished levels, but rather early-development slices that not only let you see some new glimpses of Part II’s world, but also include embedded developer commentary to give them richer context.

This clip was from a deleted and unfinished level thats being included in the remaster - which is pretty fucking dope to me.

2 min in and i'm still waiting the impressive or even great part...division 1 fake reveal from almost 10 years ago looks better...

The last 3 minutes must be incredible...

If this was a movie it would be that famous western "The assassination of the graphical expectations by the cowards nextgen devs"

Edit: finished, you people are out of your mind, now i'm sure of it :lollipop_squinting:

Insane\nextgen
Go play division games again. They are good looking but this is a cut above.

Y’all need to chill on Naughty Dog. Part II didn’t come out THAT long ago. I bet we’ll get a new game from them by 2026. 5 or 6 year dev time sounds about right for the AAAAA stuff they put out. Anything less and you’re getting stuff like SM2, Ragnarok, Forbidden West. All great games but iterative sequels as snake has pointed out many times.

Like it or not, ND look like they’re on that Rockstar dev cycle. 5-8 years with a bunch of remasters and milking in between.

But ND was never like rockstar. if you look at their output, they have been a 2-3 year dev cycle going back to the first uncharted.

Uncharted 1 - 2007
U2- 2009
U3 - 2011
TLOU - 2013
Uncharted 4 - 2016
Uncharted Lost Legacy - 2017
TLOU2 - 2020

3 years max between games. We are now 3.5 years since their last game, and no im not counting the remake for obvious reasons. They shouldve had at least a trailer by now. they used to release games in UNDER 3 years if you look at the actual release months of Lost Legacy and TLOU2. What happened?

What we do know is that Neil went off to do the show, and had to be called back by sony. in his absence, the studio was directionless and wasted time fucking with Sony Bend's uncharted spinoff and eventually took over the vsg remake. not to mention wasting 5 years on factions. This is approaching rocksteady levels of incompetence.

I am willing to give them until the VGA to show something. if after 3.5 years they cant even get an Uncharted 4 style bullshit trailer then its time to start worrying.

I still distinctly remember them announcing uncharted 2 literally weeks after uncharted 1 came out and sold just 111k copies in the first month. they were like we are all in on uncharted 2. see you soon. In two years, they had the game out. now we are approaching 4 years and no announcement, no footage, no gameplay demo. nothing. the studio feels like it has no direction. no leadership. maybe they are working on a new IP and are building everything from the ground up from the art to combat, characters, world etc. that would make sense, but again, 3.5 years should be enough to get something in a teaser.

Enough guys lol. They are literally putting interns and newbies to work on this remaster.. Its quite simply bonus content made by new hires to get their feet wet in the industry. The big dogs are working on Neils new game. ND has not fallen off.

Hire better newbies then. preferably ones with ray tracing experience. this aint a charity. this is naughty dog. they should only be hiring the best of the best. get them to work in ray tracing. that would be a far better test than simply rebuilding the game on ps5 sdk.

And no, they hired back the big dog who made uncharted lost legacy after he went to crystal dynamics to make avengers. and then had him work on the remake. the big dogs have already wasted years on factions and the remake.

i really hope im wrong and they show up with an insane demo at the vga, but ive been right about every fucking thing so far when it comes to sony studios. its not looking good for ND either.

By the end of last generation, Naughty Dog had enough talent for 2 full teams. Uncharted 4 and TLOU2 were being worked on simultaneously. It began production in 2014 with a smaller team

And Sony has said they plan on shortening the time between announcement and release date. They don't want to pressure Naughty Dog to overdeliver like they did with TLOU2 clip at E3 when a game is still years out. And you can bitch all you want. It has only been a lil over 3 years since TLOU2. They are developing a new IP. That shit takes time. It took SSM 6 years to make GOW 2018. Chill

In that same era you’re talking about, Rockstar put out GTA 4, RDR, and GTA 5 in a 6 year span. Dev times have increased almost across the board. Some devs like Insomniac are still pretty quick but they’re the exception at this point. Both ND and Rockstar are doing the Tool thing now where they take a fucking eternity to make anything because they’re psychotic. At least I hope that’s what it is, and not blatant mismanagement.

BUT I do get the concern over the Factions mess and HBO taking up Neil’s time. I’m just willing to give them the benefit of the doubt given their last major release was such an achievement.

Not really. The entire studio was working on uncharted 4 and then the entire studio worked on lost legacy. lost legacy was the worst crunch they have ever done according to naughty dogs themselves. im sure a few devs were out there working on tlou2 preproduction, but the two teams concept effectively ended the moment amy was fired. she was actually upset that left behind took away from uncharted 4 hitting full production.

Evan Wells, the studio president, gave an interview saying that they have tried the two teams before and could never get it to work.

sony just makes shit up. they revealed wolverine 3 years before its release date. horizon, gt7, gow, final fantasy 10, forspoken, spiderman 2 were all revealed 2 years before their release. the only reason demon souls and ratchet werent revealed early was because they had to be revealed alongside the ps5.

if you seriously think that nd will reveal their new ip in december and launch in the next 6 months, i dont know what to tell you. there will be a 2 year wait minimum.

The $10 upgrade is fine for the new content they're packing in, but for graphics guys like us it's simply not good. I don't care if ND interns are working on it. TLOU is Naughty Dog's baby. They should've added at least one graphical upgrade that lets fans know it was specifically made to leverage PS5.

Further proof that you all take Insomniac/SM2 for granted smh.

i wouldve been fine with this upgrade if it came out at the same time as the ps5 in 2020. 3 years later, i expected more.

iirc, the mortal shell developers were a team of 4 and they were able to get the ps5 sdk working in weeks. nd had six months before the ps5 came out and they chose not to release it. thats fine. i figured they were working on something bigger but that turned out to be factions and the remake.

God of War Ragnorok was announced in 2020 for a 2021 release. HFW was announced in 2020 for a 2021 release. Both games got delayed, but yeah, Sony will surely give a 12-18 month announcement to release date. But they will follow the Spider-man playbook. Teaser CGI trailer as an announcement and then a state of play 6 months out or so before release to show actual gameplay. If Naughty Dog hits 2025 release for their new IP that would be completely reasonable

Tried the immortals demo. first level is long walking section that keeps going forever. no action. this is what i was talking about with sony games. they almost always start the game off with a bang. how can so many games fuck up the opening?

graphics are like hogwarts at best. nothing special about the lighting or asset quality. everything looks last gen as fuck. just a lot of it.

Other than Spider-Man, I can’t think of any Sony game that puts you right in the action. Even their most bombastic games like God of War start with the most restrictive and boring shit, like cutting down a tree.
