Steam Deck OLED Announced: Coming November 16

Why does the steamdeck page only talk about upgrading the storage with MicroSD? Or am I being dumb?

The Steam Deck support page refers to their partnered ifixit page which details how to change out the SSD.

ETA Prime handheld comparison....

Its Beautiful Reaction GIF

Yea I fucking love modern gaming and technology.

Despite all its pitfalls we wouldn't be casually saying "which PC handheld can play AAA games the best" in 2013. Eternally grateful for this shit

At the end performance is roughly the same, maybe you will get 5-7% improvement tops. So what you have with the Deck now will be same with OLED.

Something like Ally or Legion Go will be a better bet as long as you don’t mind terrible battery life.

I feel like you're massively underselling the OLED screen and also the HDR, which no other handheld does. Both those things (especially when combined) are going to be a huge upgrade for every single game the device can run.

Edit: Plus there's a dozen solid QOL improvements from Wifi, to controls, to fan noise, to battery life, and more (even support AptX LL now and bluetooth wake to play).

Yes, but that is absolutely irrelevant to Switch emulation performance in Yuzu.

OLED deck has a lot of benefits, but performance isn’t much of one.

So no discernible difference in quality between etched and glossy, other than etched performs better in uncontrollable light.
Etched for the win.
yeah despite all the discussion around it 1TB is still a superior screen and model even with anti glare. Performs better in outdoor scenarios thanks to the etched screen. Seems like the go-to model for me, but now i gotta save up another 100 bucks...

Taki Udon just put up his review of the 1TB vs 512GB, glossy vs anti glare. If you guys want to see the differences between screen and color display on both models this is it.

So his conclusion is that the negativity being reported about the etched screen is highly overstated. The difference is really dependent on the how much light is in the room. Glossy screen has no advantage over etched if in a dark room. In a lit room, there is a trade off between diffused light on the screen vs distracting reflections. Outdoors, obviously etched is better.

Good having another perspective as it seems the issues with the etched screen may be way overblown.

hmm that’s a bit surprising, I think I’ll wait for more comparisons though

It is. I know how glossy and matte screens work, and we also have concrete proof there's a substantial difference in the LCD model (glossy vs etched), so yeah. I'm not sold yet, but good news regardless.

Yep, nice to have another voice countering the glossy gang.
I'm just going to say I'm super glad I didn't listen to the crowd on this one.

The ease of 1TB internal + better case + the more range of use with etched still feels like the better choice for me, especially with negligible differences in ideal lighting conditions. He literally says there's NO difference when gaming at night.

Also, FFVII Remake looks incredible on there, as does NES Metroid. So crispy!

So what's the theory on this "limited edition" OLED still being available? Floored that this thing is still selling when just about everyone, including myself, figured it would be gone in hours. Did Valve overestimate the demand for this? Or is it just not nearly as "limited" as Valve said it was? Perhaps the protections Valve put in place to ward off scalpers is having a major impact? Not sure. I'd hate to think Valve just flat out lied about it as they are usually a very trustworthy company. Thoughts?

I said previously that I bought the limited edition in spite of the screen. Fully planned on putting a screen protector (as I typically do) to try and minimize the "problem". Now it seems this might actually be the optimal configuration. I'll just see for myself when I get it, but feeling better about my selection now. May end up returning that screen protector to Amazon.

I think the OLED just isn't as selling as much as they expected, so the "limited edition" ends up not being all that limited. This is probably compounded by the anti scalper measures which makes botting hard, so the scalpers that would have bought like 50% of the units are just saying "fuck it" and going home. This lets us better estimate the true demand of the device.

Yeah, that's kind of what I believe as well. Not really a big deal either way as Valve is only charging $30 more for this over the regular 1 TB model, which was worth it for me just for the translucent case. So not like Valve acted like this was going to be some super rare collector's item and charged a $250 premium for it.

I reckon Valve overestimated the demand but its a positive for us who actually want the thing and not try to resell it

I agree. I think I'm just used to editions like this being gone so fast and then seeing them all on ebay at ridiculous prices. Nice actually being able to get one.

About to order one but I need to know. How easy is it to do emulation on it? I’m a noob when it comes to PC stuff. I want to play NES up to GameCube.

Trivial. download Emudeck, download roms (and BIOS for systems that need it), play.

IF it weren't for the subpar PS360 performance I'd say this is the best system for gaming emulation full stop. But as it stands it's now just ONE of the best. lol

It was pretty easy when I had the first Steam Deck. Just install EmuDeck. Watch a few youtube videos on it. Not that difficult.

I think most folks are going for 512GB and Valve produced more Limited Edition units than expected.

But as you say, price difference is only $30 from vanilla 1TB and that’s how much transparent back shell would run you separately anyways.

At the end of the day it's more OLED upgrades for people who actually want them so all's good in my eyes. We don't want another PS5 situation where the only time you can reasonably get one is like 2 years after release.

Even if demand and sales are lower than expected, this seems more like a passion project that Valve aren't going to be giving up on anytime soon- especially when they're bankrolled by steam.

Btw, for those still on the fence of Steam Deck vs Ally vs Legion Go, Microcenter is running a deal for upgraded 2TB Legion Go installed and imaged with OS for $799. That comes with full warranty.

You have to be logged in and add it to the cart to see the price.

you could buy a battery pack for your current deck, then.
There are even case systems that will let you strap it to the back. It would be chunky.

Separately, saw ETA Prime video, and man, Legion Go drivers suck. Go consistently is performing the worst at 15w, sometimes significantly vs Ally with same chipset.

Basically unless you have some sort of a unique need for that ginormous screen, its either OLED Deck or Ally.

I wanted the legion to be good so bad, mainly for the screen. I didnt like the OG deck screen and the ally one didn't blow me away so when I saw this big ass QHD screen I was sure that was it. Too bad.

On another note, its time for me to sit by the window for the whole 4 hour delivery window on Fedex site.

Where are these being shipped from? West coast US?

Like i said. Asus needs to take notes and release their own OLED double dip. Would court so many users over to have the already great Ally screen made even better with HDR (and no more SD overheating bullshit)

If Valve actually starts releasing SteamOS for more devices then I think i'll really open myself to these Windows systems more.

I don't think Asus will do it, I actually expect them to be more aggressive being a hardware company first and foremost. I think they'll go full steam (hehe) ahead and just release the Ally 2 soonish (before the deck 2)

I put a good amount of points in to having an OS actually designed to be used on handhelds too. Outside even the design elements, I think I've had the same game running on my 3DS for over 6 months now, no interruptions. Something you could never do on a Windows device, as it would force you against your will to reboot for updates.

hey if that entails more features taken from the deck oled i'm all in.

What the Ally and the GO really need are symmetrical stick placements.
yuck. Get a PS Portal then.

Microsoft's Game Pass promotions with Asus and Lenovo suggest to me a pretty tight alliance with Xbox. Would be surprised if Microsoft were ok with non-MS OS being an option.
