Meta Quest 3 | OT + Review Thread |

Nobody should be making a 100 hr long VR game

Why? Skyrim VR was one of the most popular games on psvr1 and pc.
Even fallout 4 vr was a top seller for vr, and that was tons of glitches and horrible vr implementation. It's still sold for $60 on steam oftentimes.

I downloaded Asgards Wrath 1 this past weekend on my New PC. It took ALL Weekend. All day Saturday and part of Sunday. The PC meta store is painfully slow.
I can download on the headset fast but not PC? Thankfully Asgards Wrath 2 will be native on the headset and should download fast, I hope.
I've spent more money on VR than 'flat' games for 2023. Gonna Buy Arizona Sunshine 2 but first need to see the update for the Quest 3. This is the second game I've had to wait for a Quest 3 update. First was 7th Guest.
Meta seems to like launching the Quest 2 version for all headsets then maybe update later on for the quest 3.

AG1 is ~130GB, and yeah I have read people getting crawling speeds from Meta's program to download their games on PC.
AG2 is ~20-25GB I believe, so even if it didn't have 100x faster speeds, it is also a fraction of the size, so it would be 1/5 the time at the same speeds, but more like 1/100th the time at the speeds you're going to see downloading it.

Yeah, I don't mind if it stays interesting. All these PC games with VR mods like RDR2 and others (cyberpunk 2077 etc), seem really cool. The video I saw yesterday of RDR2 with the bar room show / singer performing, that must be amazing in VR! Cyberpunk would be trippy as hell too.

Ah, don’t mind me. Just thinking aloud about spending so much time in a headset.

I should get Asgard 2 as part of my Quest 3 purchase, so I’ll give it a shot and see if it changes my mind.

We won't be opening the Quest3 until Christmas since it's a gift for the kids...

but since we've had a Quest2 for a long time now, I'm wondering: which games are currently the best for showing off the Quest3 power boost?

I'm wondering what games to put on our list or that I might even buy on my meta account before Christmas so that they're ready to impress that day. But I want the titles that most clearly show off the headset's improvements over the previous one. Not AR, but some kind of graphical showcase.

Hard to say exactly - Red Matter 2 seems an obvious choice though, but it's a slower paced puzzle game that may not resonate as much with kids, not sure. It's clear they made huge improvements visually with that for Quest 3.

I don't think AC Nexus is necessarily the best looking VR game by any means, but it is actually pretty engaging and does some neat stuff. I'd seriously consider that, I just played through the opening tutorial and part of the first mission, and it is really fun to play. It's pretty high budget in the sense it's fully voiced, and the sense of scale and freedom is great. As soon as I got in to Venice or wherever the first mission was, I just started walking around on my own and climbed as high as I could and it's cool to jump around the rooftops and look at everything. There's collectables to find in each level like a regular game, and you enter each level (memory) in a VR simulator (very meta, wow no double pun intended) but the VR simulator is also accessed by hacking in through an Iron-Man like UI with mixed reality, so that's pretty cool too.

Honestly though that First Encounters mixed reality demo that's 5 minutes long with worth every second. It will put such a smile on your face I bet, it's charming as hell, definitely give that a go.

Maybe if you through some games you're thinking about out there that will help direct the conversation, but most of the impressive Quest stuff I'm not sure really showcases the Quest 3 over 2 all that much. The most apparent difference is really the pancake lens being 10x clearer. So revisiting some of your favorite Quest 2 games, but seeing them so much clearer is pretty impressive in itself. I found RE4 from the Meta store to be amazing sharp and clear. Same with Pinball FX2, it's unbelievably detailed on Quest 3, best I've ever seen a pinball game look, but if that's not your thing, I guess what is will be impressive, that's the cool thing about VR. Whatever interests you tends to really impress even more in VR. Fishing, table tennis, bowling, etc.

But yeah, as far as fun games go, Nexus is a very pleasant surprise for someone who enjoys more traditional console like games. And of course Asgard's Wrath 2. But PC VR would really shine if you have access to stuff like Half-Life 2 in VR or Alyx, or Squadrons, and so on.

Personally, I have been anticipated a game of this size for a long time. I want an experience that I can pop in and explore for possibly years to come. I always wished they would bring Skyrim to the Quest, maybe they can eventually port it to the 3 after they get rid of the Quest 2 requirement.

Microsoft doesn't believe in VR, so anything under their control will never see the light of day in VR, until Apple gets it mainstream and they change their mind lol. Skyrim will be stuck to PSVR1 and PC VR. Which of course does work with the Quest.

Another Asgard's Wrath 2 video impression

Seems super positive

Seems very interesting! (watched without video due spoilers)
It's a native Quest game or PC required?
How's Skyrim VR?
Is it really the full Skyrim or is it a poor experience in VR?
Mixed bag for me. It's good until you see 2000s era NPC's with 90s animations. Probably good with VR mods.

Tried finding the general VR thread but failed, is there a list of games that have multiplayer support between oculus/PCVR and PSVR2? Looking to play with my wife but we only have 1 quest 2 and a psvr2

They aren't investing heavily to build their own platform for sure, but by no means does that say anything about what platforms they port their software to. They are releasing a GamePass application for the Quest platform this month. All I am saying is I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea

God damn I'm soft. Almost cried in moss 2. Which I didn't want to and stopped myself because tears + tech probs not ideal.

So is the resolution of moss and moss 2 that of quest 2?

Because it's more blurry than the pop ups saying achievement earned and the quest 3 UI.

I wonder if it's powerful enough for moss 3 to run at full resolution, with all the textures etc.

I can't wait till I can see VR in 180 degrees horizontal, or however wide my natural eyes see in!

While it's immersive enough it would obviously be improved if you weren't looking through a 'window'.

These are all those under the tab 'better on quest 3'

I can only speak for pistol whip. Great fun. highly recommend it.

Played through the Northstar hotel in Half Life Alyx last night. I died a few times.
This area is top shelf Valve. Your having to traverse an old bombed out Hotel with hazards around every corner.
There's a section where you move up and down the exposed missing walls and across missing floors with creatures crawling all around you.
I wish this was native to the headset. Maybe the Quest 4 will have the power.

Edit-spelling Alyx name correctly

Some tips around VD, it seems on h264+ at 500 mbit was getting some stutter and the quest 3 tends to run a little hot. Also have it connected to a power bank. Dropped it down to 300, looks the same and it seems to not overheat?

I have a battery pack capable of 20w but it will not keep the quest at 100 if it gets too warm. I think it drops down to charging more slowly or not charging at all depending on the Internal temp as a safety feature. Was kinda making me anxious how it was behaving, will keep an eye on it. Perhaps for other ppl they can stay at 100 even through very hot sessions without it dropping.

Also been playing Barbaria, game is too addicting and fun. Highly recommended, mix of hack and slash and asynchronous tower defence

I have modded all three of my Quest 2's and none of them would stay at 100% with an extra battery pack, which I hear is good thing. Apparently it's not healthy for the battery to be at 100%. My quest 2 would hover around the 80% mark with a battery which I think is a sweet spot.

The battery I used for my Quest 2 will not keep my Quest 3 at 80% though, but its not a 20W. I haven't looked into a bigger battery yet but the heat thing your describing sounds concerning.

I can probably get around 3 to 4 hours playtime with swapping my batteries on the Quest 3 but it won't charge, It has kept me happy for now but I was hoping a bigger wattage would fix it that as I have played for 6+ hours sometimes.

WIll try the VD tip next time I play.

Anyone wear glasses and have a Meta Quest 3? Got one in the basket but just wondering how it fares for those with spectacles. The Reverb G2 I have at the moment allows me to wear glasses glasses within the headset, even more comfortable since I replaced the gasket too, so just wondering if its possible with the Quest 3 as well. To be fair the Reverb G2 is still a great headset, but with Microsoft brushing WMR under the carpet and a couple of recent games purchased lacking support, its time to move on I think.

Also its quick to go these days? The G2 boots up just by clicking SteamVR so it's pretty quick & simple.

Yes glasses work. The face gasket thing has adjustment to move it a few clicks away from the lens to give room for glasses.
Main problem for me was my glasses were really wide and they touched the sides of the face gasket. still worked but was snug.
I spent the money and bought the Zenni prescription inserts anyway. zenni inserts simply clicked into place. Easy to put in but are difficult to remove without fear of cracking the inserts.
I will get magnetic inserts for any of my future headsets.

It works ok with glasses but I really recommend spending $50 and getting the snap on lens inserts which make it totally seamless.

Sounds like it's worth a try with the glasses at least, mine aren't too wide and fit a G2 fine so will probably fit. I'll be selling the G2 on which will get about half the cost back, so if I gotta buy some lenses then it won't be the end of the world :messenger_grinning_sweat: Does the Meta Quest 3 work pretty seamlessly with SteamVR? Got plenty of games on that

I am loving Half Life Alyx on my new PC And the quest 3.
I bought virtual destop for wireless link Its still better than both steam vr link and meta built in link.
seamless Pretty much Either of the 3 ways to link up wireless.
of course wired works even better.

Thanks for the info. I forgot about the wired option so that's even better as I can play most games that way and switch to wireless for the more physically demanding stuff

Bought this game because I'm going to visit family for the holidays and there are younger people there who like cats. Ended up playing more than I would, can't say I'm proud of it haha....

Also, for those interested in this new racket ball game.

I'd watch a review if you can find one. It's pretty simplistic but relaxing.
How's racket club? I'm on the fence on that one as I'm worried about splitting my time with Eleven. These days time is the most precious quantity haha ...

I think eleven wins out on community but i have had some great interactions in racket club. Many of people are still in the fumbling around stage of learning how to play. The mechanics are solid.

I really wanna get a Quest (well the plan was to PC upgade first but god damn I've been wanting that for years and prices aren't getting any better, fuck fuck fuck, ~500 for this from an Amazon seems more viable to use stand alone/with what my current PC can handle) but this stupid shit scares me.

WAY too many reports of stupid shit like this going wrong since the Quest 2 if not 1 and my country's not officially supported despite being in the EU. Although previously they did at one point send me a free refurbished CV1 cable long after the warranty had expired (it was already discontinued so they had leftover stock I guess) so that's a good indication, nowadays they have so many more customers that even if they want to they probably can't get to all in a timely manner. I'm not even following Quest in particular, just VR in general, but reddit and other such places are full of such things (not counting the dumb I played Gorilla Tag and smashed my hand and controller in the wall stuff obviously). It seems CV1 was their sturdiest product, especially the controllers, and that had its issues too (the audio cable in the strap eventually giving out and the main cable being impossible to replace after it was discontinued when eventually all will be worn down, something that's of course solved with the streaming video on the Quest line not needing proprietary/any cables). Plus ports are fiddly in general and the first thing to go out even on my phones and stuff so, yeah, I hate this.

This reminds me of the 4090 issue, maybe if the cable is tugged on and not properly seated it will cause an overcurrent/heating. I'm wondering if it was just from charging or did the person use a cable to play from their computer. I strongly recommend people get a short 2 feet 90 degree cable as a passthrough so that you are not constantly plugging and unplugging into the headset itself.

That's crazy isolated. I've been reading VR threads for like 6 months and I've never seen a single person complain of anything like that. Quest 3 is a great headset, and for as much hate as Meta gets, they do stand behind it, and will warranty any issues.

You absolutely won't regret it, especially not if you also have access to PC VR.

That's a good idea, I use a detachable magnetic cable on my DualShock4 cos the port was going bad so now that's permanently locked in there while still letting me go wireless or whatever, but I doubt magnetic cables are of good enough spec for Quest 3 usage (or such a use case, it would probably detach with any movement), so, what would such a cable that's of high quality for fast charging/streaming use as well look like? Link to Amazon maybe? Also a main cable that will be good for streaming since I believe since Quest 2 the included cable is only meant for charging and not playing with it? I have a pretty shitty router, whatever the phone company handed with the contract. Though it's been fine for downloads/games over wi-fi this is way different, so I'd probably use it cabled with PC to start with (probably play seated at that point). I should buy all this together if I do.

Here is the one I got: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V1WHDKL?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

I mostly cared about the power requirements since I'd be using it tacked onto my shoulder, and I don't think it's too problematic to find a cable that can do around 20 W (Q3 with PD does around 18W I think).

The main cable I tried to hook up to the PC (it's very short), and the PC or Quest complained that it wasn't a suitable one for the data transfers required. I haven't delved too deep into that side because I think wireless is the way to go.
Does your router do 5 GHz? What I did is I connected my PC to router via ethernet and then set the router to 5 GHz. You can get a phone app to check network congestion in your area and change your router settings to pick a less busy frequency band. Being close to the router while playing is ideal.
My crappy ISP router was actually not terrible with Air link / VD, but I wanted to push higher bitrates and avoid any network spikes, so ended up going for a 6e router that had a 6 GHz band. You kinda need to be close to the router though.
You can also check your wireless stability with a ping test, just leave it for a good 10 minutes and see how many spikes you get. https://ping.canbeuseful.com/en#ping. Bad spikes could look like stutter during gameplay.

The Quest 3 is a nice headset, but at $500 Meta is not providing people with enough guidance on how to go about getting the most out of it. They definitely hit the nail on the head in terms of making things wireless, but I think they have to do more in terms of getting people prepared and enabling more power users. The whole getting the "VR legs" is a good example, there need to be more guides out there of how to ease into it.

It does 5Ghz but my PC is a floor above it and can only connect to 4Ghz (ed: 2.4) reliably (but then has full signal strength and no issues for PC use) I guess it might be workable at some low bitrate if my PC is like this but my Quest is close and connected via 5Ghz? I dunno, hence I need cable backup.

But not for the ludicrous cost of the official fiber optic cable or whatever of course. Oh well, a lot to mess around with stand alone use if I do get it, I so wanna finally play all the Dr Beef ports already.

4 GHz? Perhaps 2.4? At any rate, your connection between the PC and router will add latency. Quest to router will probably be fine, but it's about the total latency.
As for cable, USB copper might be ok for under 3 m, and you can buy an off brand optical cable for much less if you need it long (eg. 16 ft). This is just for data transfer, for simultaneously holding a charge I'm not really sure, I'm going to dig into it at some point though for personal curiosity.

Here's the test after 10 minutes, guessing that's horrible as expected? And yes, 2.4, not 4, lol. But that's too high ping, does it actually have to go through the internet when using local device to device network? On speedtest.net nearest servers it gives me like 16-20ms ping instead of this 77 average.

Yeah it's not really about what the ping is, it's more about whether you get lots of spikes, which could be indicative of interference for sending and receiving. It doesn't look half bad, my 2.4 GHz looks like a disaster over 10 min but 5 GHz looks much cleaner (so it's likely not the server/internet pathway).
I can't say for sure but you may be alright, 2.4 Ghz is enough bandwidth for VR mostly people worry about interference from other routers/devices if you live in a busy area.

I will just add that I would recommend testing Air Link, Steam Link and also Virtual Desktop (yeah, it costs $15 but *MOST* people find it to have the best results - maybe 50/30/20 in favor of VD/Steam Link/Air Link), before settling in on wired.

For me, wired through Oculus Link (wired) looks worse than Steam Link and Virtual Desktop (VD being the best for me).

It's so much better and simpler to use VD I wish I never bought a USB-C cable to use the device with, it was totally unnecessary.
