Eh, they could have let him take that on, it's not heavy, wouldn't take up much space it could have gone under his seat and feet or in the overhead it would likely have not affected the number of bags that could fit.
Basically, he may as well have thrown the deck because the charge was more than a new one. This way he gets to keep the trucks and wheels at least.
I think people are ridiculous with what they try and take in the cabin, but this wasn't one of those times.
Granted it certainly is a creative and fast way to keep his trucks and wheels.

Basically, he's saying after getting really hard and throbbing over the size of the grand stand at Cheltenham Race Course, he placed some bets on horse number 2. Thinking the same horse ran every race, he proceeded to keeping betting on horse number 2, unaware that this was a different horse every race.
