Phil Spencer: announcement this week

I still don’t think people understand Microsoft’s long term vision here.

They absolutely will foreclose on PlayStation…one day

That day will come whenever everyone moves completely to the cloud through streaming. Could be decades off, but they’ll wait patiently

In the meantime, they need to make their gaming studios relevant and competitive. They can only do that by going third party
You may not be far off here as I don't think this update MS is going to give is quite what people think it is, not entirely

Are you one of those people that were cheering for Microsoft to buy every publisher??

I’m one of those people that are old enough to remember what competition looks like. Just look at what EA did with the NFL.

I own a Switch, PS5, PC and Xbox so of all consumers I fortunately won’t be very affected, but I do know what happens when a company doesn’t have to compete with anyone.

At the moment this seems ridiculous but you’re right in some ways.

They are trying to carve out the future of the industry and be there first so I don’t think they give a shit about the device people play their games on just that they do and open up the gateway to their services.

This was the plan all along when they decided to buy Activision

That’s why they were so willing to make concessions on CoD exclusivity for consoles

Microsoft’s strength is Software services and cloud, so they have strong conviction they’ll have a big moat advantage on cloud streaming when the technology is right.

Remember Sony even announced a partnership with MS on Cloud.

Man I'm completely overwhelmed dude the entire forum and the reactions to this on twitter are giving me brain freeze...:messenger_dizzy: What the hell is this, a lot of people saw this coming but it seemingly went from 0 to 100 in the span of a single day. It doesn't feel real.

We did this in 2001 but instead of online discourse we had alone in our bedroom anger writing letters to official Dreamcast magazine and cvg. By the time 8pm rolled around and it was 10p an hour For 56k we spent the next couple of hours trying to download 200meg porn video only for your mum to pick up the phone at half 9 and it fail at 96% so didn’t have time to post on forums. Or so I’m told that’s what it was like back then.

If it's just something like Xbox games coming to PlayStation via streaming I don't see that helping Xbox much at all. Streaming isn't going to be adopted on masse anytime soon.
Agreed…this is definitely going to be actual games coming to PS, not sub stuff. Although I wouldn’t be surprised to see a PS Gamepass announcement as well

Well they are a software first company, Xbox was always a bit of a side thing for Microsoft so it shouldn’t be any surprise they just think fuck it and make themselves third party and set themselves up with Game Pass and streaming and sticking their stuff on everything going. They only stand to make more than they do now.

But it all
Depends on how strong in their convictions are cos I could imagine they will likely backtrack on a lot of this stuff cos of their rabid mentally deranged man babies that have made Xbox their personality.

I think things are deeper than what most think

If it were just a couple of games now they wouldn't be waiting a week to give us an update

I also do not believe its a we are going full 3rd party type of talk either

I think its somewhere in between, for now

I'm going with the outside shot that Phil brings Jim Ryan onstage and they talk about an unprecedented partnership.

People seem to be expecting it to confirm all the rumors. I don't think it will. I expect it to be a PR presentation that talks about a few games coming to Playstation, but it won't be the avalanche of titles people seem to be expecting.

I think they'll announce a few games that are coming. They will say they plan more for the future but will be vague and non-specific. Talk about "case by case basis." They will make all the proper reassuring sounds for the fanbase, who will be gratified that "whew, it wasn't as bad as people were saying." The actual scope of the releases will only become apparent with time.

Oh, some big changes coming. My guessing...

The "tear" list:

- No more first party (AAA) day one on Gamepass (Small games and or live services, sure)
- Big games like Halo, Gears, Starfield, will only hit gamepass after X months (Old CODs, sure, new entries? F nO!)
- All "Console Exclusives" will land on Playstation and/or Nintendo after X months (pretty much all crucial old games already considered)
- Microsoft will continue to make Xbox console for those who like the platform and ecosystem (lots people prefer xbox console over pc/pc/nintendo..., others doesnt even got all platforms... so)
- The biggest change will be reaching new players, and expanding the content (not the platform) to the Forbidden Islands and Beyond :messenger_smirking:.

Microsoft is already a third party publisher but now they are going full force. IMO, this will change the landscape for the better for them, since the focus is on content and not platform. Even Sony stop with that mentality, kinda of (games on PC, PS4, PS5, Remote play, streaming). The way you will enjoy those contents gonna be irrelevant, and if MS do what these fanboys want, yeah, that's gonna take their gaming division to the grave. Because shit will become less and less sustainable. You need +$5bi/year to make those big games, than the game flops, big loss... since you are not reaching the necessary crowd.

The big impact of those decisions is how big MS gaming division is now. They can't keep all those studios running by putting the content on limited platforms, when PS and Nintendo got a TON of consumers waiting to spend money (and streaming clearly is not working for them).

Google is Apple's biggest competitor in the mobile area. Still, all the apps Google make are available on both Play Store and Apple Store. :messenger_smirking:

Certainly. I agree there. We aren't going to wake up one day next month with the entire Xbox catalog ready for download on PlayStation lol.

lol people will be crying next week that really want Xbox to exist the console market that they’re not and will be mad about why all these rumors didn’t pan out to be true. We could see the reverse outrage on the other side next week I’m here for it 😂.

No one is expecting them exit the hardware market next week. You just made up an argument no one was making. It's about all their games coming to PS. They might exit eventually but next week? That's dumb.

You all are giving too much credit/sophistication to Spencer and Xbox team.

Literally, all Sony has to do is click the easy button with Netflix (AWS servers), get access to the 260 million subscribers, and Gamepass will be sent to the shadow realm. Does anyone think Gamepass could actually compete with such a situation? Microsoft better hope something like that doesn't happen anytime soon. They're kind of at this point...hoping to be friends with Sony.

I think MS will skirt around the issue as they always do and make one of those mind-boggling PR-heavy-type announcements while also saying some stuff will be coming to the PS5. They will claim everything else is ok and everything is fine like they always do.

I believe however the changes will be more subtle and happen over a period of years. But this is the first step. Not a chance MS is coming and saying everything we make, have made and are going to make is coming to PS platforms And they will say this is because PS gamers have been asking and they want to bring their games to everyone. That type of shit.

If things go the way I think they would go though, I don't believe there will be a next Xbox in the capacity that we see an Xbox today come next gen. There could be 5 "Xbox" consoles from 5 different OEMs though.

I'm a pretty big fan of the platform and quick resume needs to be on everything. Wonder what will happen but I'll miss the Xbox brand if it does go away. If it becomes this weird third party mashup that's fine by me just please continue to invest in the Xbox ecosystem. It's backwards compat is fantastic

All these meltdowns. Lol, ms going 3rd party is exactly the right play when you lost so much ground and fumbled a hail mary. Protect the developers making the game. Last week Ms cool as a cucumber cut 2000 jobs. What happens after 2024, you think the execs gonna take a paycut, more layoffs and studio closure is on the horizon. At least now, they have a chance to actually make money from these games.

Lmao why are people pretending they haven’t had games coming to PlayStation? Or this is something new? They literally signed a ten year deal to bring their biggest IP to PlayStation and Nintendo. They’ve also published games on Nintendo over the years as well as PlayStation. So what if PlayStation gets a couple of older games. I’m not sure where the doom and gloom is coming from. As long as those games come to game pass day one I don’t think majority of people are going to care.

I don't get it. Microsoft bought CoD and are giving up before they even tried putting Cod on Gamepass. Phill done fucked up. I think he leaves his position before Easter.
