Phil Spencer: announcement this week

Cool down? You mean burn down?
Someone catching Phil playing Diablo while the house is burning down, and Sarah posting some Persona 3 tweet, says all there is to say. They can pull their standard ”We hear you” PR speech all they want but their actions tell me they can’t handle this, they’re tone deaf on a historical level and the plan has probably gone on too far internally and now they don’t know how to reverse it, and the damage to the brand is done and the house will keep on crumbling down for a week now.

I’m not even properly invested since I’ve been using Gamepass but I’m still pissed because I realize my whole Xbox games library and playtime history will soon go poof unless I keep having a dusty old box plugged in.

And the Xbox timed exclusivity rumours talk about is pissing me off just as much as the timed exclusives on PS before they come to PC. They just want people to invest where they know they wouldn’t invest if all options were there from the start. They’ll probably start doing some late complete edition bs on the delayed releases just to get people who were there day 1 to double dip too.
Yeah well, you've only got yourself to blame.

This has been discussed for years and people were saying it was going to happen. But since some people decided to completely ignore all the signs (and there were more than plenty), reality now catches up.

What's the issue with their hardware? Why are they unable to sell it to the mass market?
Maybe lack of marketing? But the thing is that - both Playstation and Nintendo - are kinda default platforms for games. Like Switch is the default handheld, and Playstation is the default home console. It is hard to beat "defaults". Like see Steam for example - EGS tried hard with free games and so on, but even then it failed to do a dent in Steam's marketshare as people did not even bother to install a new launcher (or buy anything there), which does not even require buying anything. And now you are talking about Xbox - which is entirely different ecosystem with friend lists, purchases, digital libraries and so on.

Especially in Europe, where PlayStation is the common household brand for gaming.
I believe in PS2 era there were people (in southern europe I think) who actually named their children after Playstation or something.

Yet PS3 outsold Xbox 360. Since that generation the reach of the PlayStation brand got bigger.
It also helped that Xbox introduced Kinect, bringing more mass consumer to them (which ironically later became its undoing). Otherwise Xbox 360 would have sold less.

Why is everyone acting like this doesn’t mean Microsoft aren‘t gonna dominate the market? Like they are some small little player. Nadella doesn’t play.
Lol, really?

How in the hell are MS going to dominate anything when they are going to rely on 3rd parties. And if they do 'dominate' guess what, Phils own words, they'll be making PlayStation strong with their 30% cut.

MS start pulling some shit, Sony and Nintendo just pull all their games. No ones going to give a shit, other than Microsoft.

Can we finally agree Gamepass, is the dumbest idea since Xbox Series S. (well I guess more of the day one releases) I fully expect Microsoft to profit more out of selling games on Playstation then on Xbox simply because Playstation gamers will pay full price
Best deal in gaming mate rofl.

I think the biggest pain from next week's meeting will be not everything is going to be on Gamepass, and new release won't release on the service the same time as the retail edition.

But Phil is an idiot, so maybe he won't attempt to monetise his own community and solely rely on Sony and Nintendo.

They’re not going third party Microsoft is not going to give up their own store front to sell stuff on Sonys and let them keep all the money when they can get that directly. This is just fanboy fudder. In fact putting their games on Sony is actually a Trojan horse to push their agenda forward they’re literally working on a mobile store. Xbox is also their only consumer facing brand the rest is enterprise. They get to make money from subs on game pass with their hardware. They aren’t going to share game pass revenue with Sony to get rid of their hardware but keep dreaming.

I still think this is a trap and these fanboys know something...🧐
S SneakersSO has spoken. Goodluck if you think these clowns on twitter are playing 4D chess. The last thing a company wants to do is let a rumor ride this long where it hurts them. The leaks are out, Phil isn’t shutting down the rumor. There is no reversing this. Phil isn’t coming out next week and saying “just kidding”.

Wouldn’t be hillarious if they double down and say COD will no longer be available on PS platforms?
Ngl, I'm half expecting a 4D chess move where the xbox mouthpieces have built this rumour up so that doing shitty moves like that is seen as a justified positive by people.

Holy shit, who are these people? is this what a content creator is. This woolly gamer or whatever he is and Gaz?? They are just screaming at each other. Are these guys the Xbox Shills? This is straight up schoolyard pathetic shit.
Yes, look for GameonDaily or XboxEra for Gaz's craziness.

Sometimes you just have a less appealing product or branding. Especially in Europe, where PlayStation is the common household brand for gaming. It's very difficult to turn a whole culture around that is surrounding PlayStation. During the 360 vs. PS3 era, the Xbox 360 was cheaper, released more then a year earlier than PS3 ánd had more games than PS3 in the early year of the generation. Yet PS3 outsold Xbox 360. Since that generation the reach of the PlayStation brand got bigger.
That's not hardware tho, that's content or content ownership. If Microsoft had deals with EA on FIFA, or used RARE or Lionhead to create more euro centric games, maybe things would've been different. It's still a tough road, but I think Microsoft was focused on the US for the most part.

And anything would have been different if listened to a random forum user? 😂
If the majority listened to what some folks were saying? Absolutely yes.

Make no mistake: the root of this problem lies in consumer behavior and psychology. If the Xbox fandom did not change their collective consumer behavior, Xbox would have been in a much better position financially. Their leadership also pivots in decisions based on Internet chatter. They wouldn't have made lots of these terrible decisions that led to these problems.

On a serious note, if only Xbox fans had listened to us when we kept warning them that this would happen.
Are you reffering to GamePass as the downfall and the thing we were warned about?

Just my opinion but I think GamePass is probably the reason Xbox Series sold as much as it did. If it wasn't for GamePass I think this current change in strategy may have happend a lot earlier. I suppose it was both good and bad for Xbox.

If they had to rely on a sub to sell their console, that was already an admission of failure.
Each xbox gen had at least 1 defining game:

Ogxbox: Halo, ninja gaiden, forza, fable, pgr, all the pc ports like doom 3 that werent on ps2.

360: Gears, halo 3, forza, dead rising, mass effect and on

One: Arguably Ki, Sunset overdrive, Quantum break, forza horizon

After that there was basically nothing new and exciting for 10 years. No exclusives, no new games, everything ported to pc day one.

The only thing that kept em alive were promises of greatness that never came.

I’ve missed a week of gaming news, and looks like I’ve missed something big.

Could someone please fill me in on why the internet is exploding over Microsoft and why Phil has tweeted this?

It’s been leaked that Hifi rush and sea of thieves are coming to PS but also Starfield, Indiana Jones and potentially Halo and Gears.

Instead of saying ‘nah’ Phil has said they will update on the plan next week.

They do have that target of 100M subs by 2027 for Xbox to be continued, iirc.

Which is impossible.

Yeah, really this is to avoid that outcome at all costs. Their graph (obviously) didn't incorporate sales on PS/Switch and right now looks to be about the only way they'll manage to keep the business worthwhile.

Rumor is Xbox is going third party.

That would be a bad move for gaming in general honestly, competition is good and I don't want Sony to be alone (Nintendo is on their own things). We saw how awful Sony can get.

We'll see.

They won't get near 100M, even with both Playstation and Nintendo.

Oh wow, no wonder this forum is filled with Microsoft related titles…

Cheers for the summary!

In my opinion problem with Microsoft is (besides the fact that they are they own enemy ;) ) that they are too big. In the world where you need to earn more money year over year you have too big expectations. They could have played in the same game as Sony and in a way Nintendo (but they are a bit different) and I bet that Xbox would be close to PlayStation or maybe even above it by now. But they weren't happy with this type of revenue, they wanted more, much, much more. This lead them to many bad decision which also were poorly executed. Because of that they are where they are. It's not the fault of competition, it's their own doing.

Now I'm not sure if they go full 3rd party right of the bat and dump Xbox hardware. I think that wouldn't be smart but we are talking about MS here everything it's possible. I do believe that they still are into Game Pass but they can't expand it with the 'tools' that they have. They may aim at streaming from any device you want but it's a song of the future. Today they need consoles and it doesn't have to be their own console. Some are saying that GP should be launched on PlayStation and Switch - if Japanese are smart they won't do that, it's stupid thing to do. It would be like letting your competition to take your user base by free. Sure MS would need to pay for that for some time but that's the thing - in the long run they don't want to share.

What MS can do is to act as a 3rd party publisher and still have GP. They can wait for the future of streaming to come, probably they would try to speed it up, but i think it wouldn't end well. The thing is that they would need to be patient and I doubt that MS can be that (the whole Xbox is an example for that).

What I would do? What they were doing in the first half of X360 era. I would let go off people that are in charge of the division now and hire some fresh faces for the new start for Xbox. They should say that they are committed to the platform, they want the Xbox to be a success. To do that they need to make some hard decisions because mistakes were made. Then they should backtrack on day one GP releases, maybe even PC releases (it's probably less harmful but still it should be considered). They should focus on making great games for Xbox. Because they bought two publishers that made games for many platforms before they should say that they cannot make only exclusives from those publishers. They should say that it'll be decided title by title (for real this time). Games like Starfield, Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Call of Duty - IP that were multiplaform and sold well on Playstation or Nintendo should stay this way (at least for now). But the same time they could make some exclusive new games. GP would be there but mostly for smaller games and mobiles with some older gamers added after some time (like PS+). By doing this I think that they could rebuild Xbox brand in one generation. After that maybe they could think about some changes in favour of GP but it'd be mostly tied into streaming capabilities.

In short - take your time. Don't be hasty, in the end Xbox is in the market for more then twenty years and by now it could have been in much batter shape.

Now I don't think that all of this will end well for the industry. I'm afraid as I was at the beginning of GP that it'll have it's consequences for the industry. I don't want to say that Xbox is doomed for sure but it can go wrong in so many ways. Like I think that devs under MS should be afraid. It'll have an impact on Sony as well. They already have their own problems. In the end consoles are still needed because most of the casuals won't play on PC, they will go elsewhere (Nintendo, Steam Deck, mobiles). Also the developers and publishers still need consoles or else they'll need to completely change. Someone has to buy their games and PC is only a part of that model. In fact PC can also be affected by this.

No, I agree - though it can't hurt to be on every PS4, PS5, Switch and Switch 2 in the wild, in whatever weird way that looks like.

I do think eventually they just call it a day and sell off IP piece by piece. There's very little left of substance in the chamber at this point considering what they own.

Question for those who keep mentioning this "Arrogant Sony" or "Shitty Sony". What exactly do you think Sony is going to do if MS say they aren't going to compete In the console space?

Bro, you have been literally waiting and hoping for Xbox to fail. Let's not pretend otherwise. Even now most of the discussions happening here are based on rumors that have been extrapolated to death.
I was hoping for Gamepass to fail, because I knew it wasn’t sustainable and that it would a long term net negative. There was no way they could deliver $100M+ games Day 1 without gaining a massive influx of subscribers.
