Xbox held an internal town hall on Tuesday where Spencer said they don’t plan to stop making consoles

The company held an internal Tuesday townhall where Spencer told employees that there were no plans to stop making consoles, and that Xboxes would continue to be part of a strategy that involves multiple kinds of devices. Xbox did not immediately return a request for comment.

They obviously won't leave the hardware business, it will just fulfill another purpose in a different strategy in the future.
Once they start releasing their games on multiple devices their hardware will just become an option.
This is the key point of the rumors.

I don't deem it very likely that they will stop producing hardware. There will be perks for the users that choose to use their product and it won't be a direct competitor to Nintendo or Sonys consoles.

Doesn't matter what they plan. If they start releasing their premiere exclusives on the Playstation they will be as relevant in the console market as the Atari Jaguar, or the Panasonic 3DO.
Exactly. Once a few games turn up people will assume they will all turn up eventually.

I still on the side that traditional consoles for Xbox are dead. Streaming sticks, gamepads and some Xbox Branded hardware? Sure.

Custom $500 device with locked OS? I dunno. MS i s clearly winding down hardware as a whole, just look at surface. It will be the Death by a Thousand Cuts.

Yeah......that's been repeated multiple times by some of us. HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 has been preaching that for a while now.

The speculation from some is that Microsoft going multiplat will cause the demise of the console, not that Microsoft plans on killing the console.
We must assume that those who have speculated (or have directly announced "2027") that MS will stop making consoles directly and that it becomes the same as EA and TakeTwo have not existed here??🤔

Coffin is where they went when they went day one with PC.
Putting those games on PlayStation will be the death nail to the division.

Such a out of touch company MS is.

Because they don't operate like a game company. The first two generations of Xbox they did, before the higher ups took notice and start meddling. That all culminated with Matrick bringing his ass on stage talking about multimedia capabilities, always online requirements, how you won't be able to play used games anymore.

Plenty of people have speculated that Microsoft will get out of the hardware business, but I'm talking about those referencing that in response to the rumors of MS going multiplat. Folks who already believed that was going to happen are obviously strengthened in their position by that. But I get your point. I did not mean to suggest those folks don't exist, here or elsewhere.

Not having exclusives is the most out of touch with how to be a successful console you could possibly get.

Fake news. I don't believe anything anymore. I'm not even convinced that what we know as "Phil Spencer" was not murdered by Jim Ryan, and has been replaced with an AI synthesis. All part of the New World Order's plan for a global conglomerate of gaming.
It’s the damn SERN! El Psy Kongroo!

MS said something along these lines.
Take it up with them.
Lol. Rather, it is what you and many here have wanted/desired to interpret while you exhaust the mocking emojis with each one who dares to predict that MS is going to launch new hardware.

In fact, if there is something to take from MS's actions, it is that everything indicates that it will continue launching hardware (another thing is the idea, philosophy or strategy it has in mind for that hardware).

I understood you, I just wanted to point out that there is an important group of people (here too) who defend and assure that there will NOT be a new MS console and therefore I understand the OP's reaction or wink.

That said. It is clear that believing or not that MS is going to launch new hardware is one issue and the viability or success of that hardware if it is launched without exclusives is another.

As I have said some times already. It all depends on what product MS wants. One with the potential to sell 40,50 or 60 million requires exclusives. For one that can reach 25-30 in 7 years of life, perhaps Gamepass will be enough.

It would be great if next week some light was shed on your hardware strategy.

Personally speaking the bigger concern is having no reason to invest in their hardware or ecosystem.

I do like their controllers though so I want those to stick around for years.

Think that's a fair assessment of the situation. I'll be interested to see of MS tries to think outside of the box with their strategy, a la Switch. I'm definitely hoping for an Xbox handheld.

So if they're going to start releasing games for Playstation consoles while continuing to produce Xbox hardware, what is even the point of owning an Xbox?

Like if my options are either buying a console where I can play everything, or buying a console where I can only play third party games and Xbox exclusives, why in the hell would I ever choose to buy Xbox..? ..Game Pass? I don't think that's going to be nearly enough of a perk for the vast majority of consumers.

... and why in the hell does Xbox management believe the best choice was to let all of these rumors fester for a week+ with no actual comments to diffuse the situation? This shit is going to linger around the brand for ages no matter what they say next week at this point.

The ineptitude is ridiculous. What the fuck are they even doing over there.

I think, if anything, this week shows that insiders don't really know shit. And anyone who literally loses sleep over a first party publisher making their games available on other systems should probably not be who you get your objective news from.
