Wow, I am so hyped for both Bioshock Infinite and this, I'm feeling an odd wave of patriotism for an America that was birthed by a silent war between secret societies of Assassins and Templars and ascended toward the heavens as the flying fortress-city of Columbia.

Damn it, this year gaming has picked some strange, but awesome, historical settings.

Sadly there isn't a Best Buy anywhere near me, I've never even seen one in real life. Are the metal cases a BB exclusive?

It's good to be a fan of American history this year. Seriously, so much hype.

What else is coming out with an American history motiff? I'm extremely interested.

Infinite...and what else (if any)? I've been bad about keeping up with future releases.

Sorry, just getting flashbacks of Altair being boring as FUCK for 90% of the game in AC1, because he's so stoic and serious

Yawn

Tits, revenge, and explosions. That is what I think of when I see Ezio. Altair actually feels like a believable character to me.

They are both awesome, and you two should have respect for the dead!

Both characters had great character development, I thought.

Really? What's going to happen with the French Revolution? It's begging to be addressed in one more iteration before this generation ends.

Maybe Ubisoft would have one of Connor's assassin associates/apprentice go on to participate in the French Revolution.

By the end of the game, he'll probably be the same age as Ezio in revelation.

Ezio was like 52/53 in Revelations. From some of the shots in the GI article, we'll see Connor at a really young age (10 maybe?) and since it takes place over three decades, I doubt he'll be older than 40 (Maybe Ezio's age in Brotherhood at the most). There's a shot with a young George Washington (?) and a young Connor.

Yeah, probably could. I don't know why, but there is just something I love about going to a store on launch day and picking something up. I can't say I've ever pre-ordered something online, actually.

I've always physically gone to a store, put my money down, and picked it up.

Sheesh, though. We've got Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, and this all launching withing a few weeks of each other. I know there isn't any way I'm swinging damn near $200 on games at one time that close to the holidays. Seems like I've got some hard thinking to do.

I wonder if either this or Bioshock will include the Multiplayer features of their predecessors.

Good job setting my expectations high, Ubi.

I'm curious how the brotherhood aspect of the story plays out. Is it already wide reaching and established like in AC1 or are we establishing it like Ezio did in AC2 (more specifically Brotherhood).

I have a feeling it will play out much like Ezio's story, where he wants revenge and gets it in form of becoming an Assassin.

Hope they bring up the age of enlightenment and reason into this considering this whole series has had a very in your face religion and philosophy component. Major missed opportunity if they don't.

Goddamn. This sounds so fucking amazing on paper. Let's hope it delivers. I'm very pleased to hear the engine is getting a serious overhaul. I found Revelations so visually dated/mediocre; I didn't even make it past the opening.

So you didn't even make it to the cities before quitting? I will admit it has a terrible introduction being pulled by the horses and all that. But once you get to the cities, this game is beautiful. I am playing the pc version at 1080p60 on a plasma, but I tried the PS3 version too and thought it looked nice.

As far as 3 goes, it sounds like goty to me honestly. Really glad to hear that we will be able to "change the outfits to make it more realistic" (paraphrase) Hopefully that means removing the hood as well.

-Want it to be a jumping on point for new players without losing touch with what longtime fans cherish most.

This seems like it would be pretty obvious. The mainline games always seemed like they were pretty self-contained when it comes to the storylines set in the past. I don't see how this one would be any different. I'm guess that they will end up including a lengthy recap of the events of the last four games at the beginning of this one.

-New hero called Connor/Ratohnhake:ton (pronounced Ra-doon-ha-gay-doo). He has an English father and Native American mother.
-More details about the protagonist/scenarios:
You will experience Conner's childhood on the American frontier as he is raised by the Mohawk. The Mohawk eventually clash with white colonists who burn their village down, causing Connor to dedicate his life to confront tyranny and injustice.

I like the name. Not as fancy as Ezio or Altair, but it sounds nice. I hope we move into Connor from Ratohnhake:ton pretty quickly just because that is kind of hard to pronounce. Of course, I hope we get to experience quite a bit of his childhood as well. I like that he is looking to confront tyranny and injustice. It's nice that he has goals of his own. Hopefully he won't end up as just a middleman who is doing something for someone else all the time.

-A new traversal approach that has players leaping and climbing trees and mountain cliffs.
-There is a new sprinting system also, so you can hold the button to instantly turn around and start fleeing from combat. They also let you kill people while still moving so you can keep chasing a target. They kind of imply you can even leap off of them after you kill them, though I'm not sure if that makes you faster or just doesn't impede your movement.
-They really, really, really want you to constantly move. I mean like they say this every four sentences. Not just in battle, but in every section of the game.
-They also try to keep you more in control of the combat than ever before.

I hope this ends up feeling fun. I mean, I would love taking my acrobatic skills and actually being able to apply them to a natural environment. It sucked in Brotherhood when a master climber couldn't even climb up a small freaking cliffside.

I hope always being on the move doesn't end up making the game feel frantic.

The moving and killing at the same time stuff really makes it seem like you will be involved in a lot of huge battles as well as tons of chases. I really like that. Chases were some of my favorite things about the original AC.

-Uses a new version of the Anvil engine that can "depict thousands of troops engaged in bloody battle" along with highly detailed face close-ups. They later imply that if they used version numbers, they would be like going from Anvil 1.0 -> Anvil 2.0 or something of that nature.
-Judging by the images, the faces really are quite good.

It's kind of hard to get a real feel for the engine based on these first few images, but I definitely think it looks quite nice. Everything has a real nice pop to it. The colors are especially nice, but I think the art direction definitely has more to do with that than the engine itself. I can't wait until we see a huge battle scene. I hope that when you have that many people on screen that everything stays consistent framerate/tearing wise. I also hope that the models retain a fair bit of detail.

-Combat is focused on putting you on the offensive and based on speed/momentum.
-The main character has thousands of new and unique animations (no carry over from other titles) to support the new combat system.
-Game Informer really loves their animation system..

Yes. This sounds really good. I wonder how closely it will mirror the combat in the Arkham games. I'm really excited to see all of the new animations. I hope they changed the main walking animations from Ezio. Tree-climbing, mountain-climbing, and building-climbing should all feel different from one another. Of course, I'm pretty damned sure they took that into consideration.

It also appears as if they have added in a crouch button which I know quite a few people were clamoring for. It will be interesting to see where this all goes.

-Connor does have a hidden blade.
-Connor enters battle with two weapons. The game uses the same controls in and out of battle.
-The tomahawk and knife are a "constant presence" in battle. They also let you do double counters and multiple takedowns, and you can chain kills.
-There's no more target locking, it just automatically detects your target. Counter/defense are the same button to prevent turtling.
-You can use human shields and other context sensitive moves.
-They want you to constantly move in battle.
-There are lots of secondary attacks like the one shot pistol on the Y button.
-There's a new dynamic camera to track the action and make it look as cinematic as possible.

I am glad that they are taking some cues from Rocksteady when it comes to incorporating the environment into combat. Those context-specific animations in City really made fights feel so real/visceral.

I wonder if they simplified the countering. Counter and defense always used the high-profile button before, so I'm wondering what they are talking about here. Perhaps they removed the 'Shift' function of it in battle and just made it so that when you hold the button down, you do a basic defense, but when you actively tap it, it does a counter. This would make it easier to do dual counters as well.

Not really sure what they mean by having the tomahawk and knife being a constant presence in battle. I'm thinking that they will be incorporated into the takedowns used by the other weapons, but I can't really be sure here. I wonder if the multiple takedowns will be done by flicking the stick in multiple directions.

The way it reads makes it seem like Y/Triangle will be somewhat of a random attack button in combat. I kind of hope it is. It would really make fights more dynamic.

I would like to see just how much of a role movement plays in battle. It was always somewhat awkward before just moving about. It was really quite automated.

I like the idea of human shields and the like. I wonder if this will play out like the Revelations CG trailer where Ezio was practically making his enemies fight themselves.

The dynamic camera has always been around somewhat. I wonder what tweaks they've made to it instead of just zooming in when you perform an execution from time to time.

Also, with the inclusion of a bow, two pistols, and a freaking rifle, I have a feeling that the shooting is going to be very fucking different than what it was in the previous games. I'm thinking completely overhaul here. Something like an OTS third person view for this stuff.

-Character details:
-George Washington: Interacting with Washington is one of the core relationships of the game.
-Benjamin Franklin: He's not a convenient inventor a la Da Vinci.
-Charles Lee: His role is a mystery.

Charles Lee was a general on the American side of the war. He hated Washington. I mean, he really fucking hated Washington.

-The game is set between the years
1753-1783
and is centered around the cities of
Boston and New York
.
-"It's not just going to a historical building now; it's going to a historical event."
-Event examples: "
You will see the great fire of New York. You will visit Valley Forge as a location that is currently occupied by Washington's forces.
You will visit these places in the moment that they were important, and hopefully, experience the reason why we know where they are today. That's the goal."
-Connor is in the heart of major battles, and they can now have a couple thousand guys on screen, whereas before it was capped at about 100.

I really like that the focus is on big events. This should make things much more interesting in the long run. It should also provide a nice pacing for the game.

-The overall story is still centered around
the Assassins versus the Templars
and Connor's journey.
-Not all the Colonists will be cast as good people, and not all the British will be cast as evil oppressors. They're trying to focus on how both the
Assassins and Templars
viewpoints exist in a gray morality as
the Templars really believe they're saving the world.
-The French and Native Americans will also feature in the game, as was probably really obvious.

Yes! This conflict of viewpoints is one of the main reasons I loved AC. I was sorry to see that put on the backburner in the ACII trilogy.

-There will be all sorts of wilderness in the game referred to as the Frontier.
-The map of the Frontier is 1.5 times bigger than the entire map of Brotherhood.
-The Frontier is not empty like in Assassin's Creed 1, but features a third of the game's missions and gameplay content.
-The Frontier also includes colonial settlements like
Lexington and Concord and Connor's Mohawk village
.

I really love the environmental shots that i have seen so far. They look like the actual wilderness. I'm glad to hear that it will play an important role in the game. I loved the countryside in the original game, but it was defintitely underutilized. The same thing can be said of Forli and San Gimignano in Assassin's Creed II.

The landscapes are looking really good already. The terrain is especially interesting. It is quite varied. The forests look very densely packed which is super cool. Looks pretty damned realistic.

-You can hunt animals for resources, and how you kill them effects your reward. A one hit kill on a bear gets you a much more valuable pelt than stabbing it eight times.
-The wilderness traversal plays a big part in the gameplay in the Frontier, allowing you to use trees, cliffs, ledges, and more to set up kills and combat.

Loving the sound of this. The hunting seems to be well thought out. Also, it is really nice seeing animals other than birds and horses in an AC game for once. I kind of want to have a dog following me about for some reason now. Mainly because that dog in the city shot looks so damn cool.

Seems like you will be doing your fair share of stalking in this game and planning out appropriate ambushes ahead of time. BADASS!

-The world changes as time passes, so a field where a battle happened in one year may just be a series of empty encampments a few months later.
-The entire world will change with seasons, so the cities and the wilderness will all exist in both Summer and Winter settings.
-In the winter, soldiers will move slowly and stumble about in the snow, and lakes and rivers will freeze over allowing you new terrain to work with. This gives Connor an extra advantage since he can still use the trees and wilderness pretty effectively during this time of year.

Wow! This sounds unbelievably amazing right here. Is this the first big budget game to really take a dynamic world into account?I wonder if there will be an actual seasonal cycle in this game. If so, the timelapse videos are going to be beyond belief. I love how the seasons are really going to affect the AI.

-There are all sorts of clubs and groups who want you to join and give you quests. These are separate from the mission system. These clubs will contact you based on what you do in the game. For example, hunting a lot will get you an invitation to the hunting society.
-There will be a goods based economy, a new property system, and more Desmond stuff.

Nice. I wonder how many groups like this will be in the game. It would be nice if the property stuff and economy were quite expansive. Being separate from the mission system kinda makes it seem like it will be frivolous though. Not liking the sound of that.

-There's going to be some new puzzle thing like the first person Tetris.

Yikes! Better be a new puzzle thing that is not at all reminiscent of the FP stuff in Rev.

-There's a new GUI known as Animus 3.0.
-There's a new Animus database written by Shaun Hastings, who makes snarky comments about the British perspective of the war.

I wonder how similar this will be to the other ones.

-There will be more platforming levels.

Expected. I am definitely curious to see just how these will play out though. With a relatively short history at the time, I wonder just what kind of complexes Connor will be able to move through.

-Full synchronization returns, but with major tweaks. Missions have checkpoints, You also get significant rewards for doing these tasks instead of a 100%. "Imagine a leveling system in an RPG, except there's a finite amount of XP to find. The more in-sync you get, the more you fill your sync bar. Within each mission, each activity you complete has a value". You can replay everything to increase your score.

Fuck yeah! Tying this into the rest of the game should be interesting. I wonder what exactly that you will be leveling up though and how it will affect your character.

-They imply there is something resembling the Brotherhood system of picking up fellow assassins.

I hope there are fewer people to recruit, but each one plays a huge role in the game and has a really unique personality and style of doing things. Each helper being a character like Leonardo or Yusuf would be fantastic.

-Aligned groups are gone, but something new is replacing them in regards to factions. They don't say what.

I'm not exactly sure what they mean here. I hope it isn't just new groups of four for you to hire scattered about the city.

-There's a new notoriety system that is more hidden and doesn't penalize you for exploring risky areas.

Interesting. With how easy a person could become a celebrity in America at those times, this could be rather awesome. I wonder if the story will change/characters will interact with you differently based on how sneaky or open you were with the various assassinations.

-You can upgrade Connor's gear and costume as the game goes on in an attempt to make it feel more authentic.

Man, I've been waiting for an upgrade system like this ever since they introduced tailor shops in the ACII. I hope there are many various outfits to choose from that are all visually striking. I also hope there is an automatic change or weathering that will occur if you stick with a single outfit through the whole game.

-The cities have a lot more subtle detail now in terms of ambient things that happen.

-You can now leap over wagons or slide under obstacles, including navigating over and around moving objects. The free running stuff also has you jumping through windows to trees and then on top of church roofs. Basically, expect the free running stuff, but more fluid and presumably generally closer to the ground.
-The cities have a lot more subtle detail now in terms of ambient things that happen.

Cool. Movement really seems to be the key with this game. I hope it all ends up coming together. Also, the chases are going to be fucking insane this go around. It also seems like the transition to different z-levels and then back again is going to be really smooth.

-There are around 2.5 hours of character scenes in the game that are fully acted and recorded. They mean this in Naughty Dog style where they have the actors being mocaped while performing on a set that resembles the scene in the game.
-They're aiming for accuracy by having historical dialog consultants and actual Native American actors.

Man, the story should be pretty damn interesting. The character interactions should be a hell of a lot better now that they are doing this. Actors just seem to work better when they are talking to other people naturally or recording lines while they are actually performing tasks.

-This game has the longest development cycle since AC1, and has twice the production capacity (in terms of work hours) and budget of Revelations.
-They want the game to feel like AC3.5, and the game will have its first version complete in just a few more weeks, at which point they're going to spend the rest of their time refining it.

Good. Polish is going to be absolutely necessary.

___

Really, the shots we've seen so far are very nice. The characters and environment are really detailed. Both the cities and the Frontier look very visually interesting.

Haters gonna hate.

This game sounds great, I can't wait to explore
Boston
in the late 1700s Hopefully they include some recognizable locations that are still around today.

I doubt the type of patriotism you're probably thinking of will have much to do with this game. Given the time period and the fact that this isn't even an American dev team.

I share your disdain for American patriotism cheerleading (and I'm American), but I really don't think that will be the case here. The protagonist is a Native American, so I can't imagine him having any love or sense of belonging with the colonists. I think there's a good chance the devs could display the conflict as more morally grey on both sides than many other representations of the Revolution have.

Again, do people like you realize this game is made in Montreal and published by a French company? And that US History is actually pretty interesting and involves a lot of other countries too?

NOPE

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I somehow haven't liked an AC game since AC1... I really want to get back on board thought, story seems hella neat.

No man, America both spatially and temporally has always been the same thing , since like FOREVER.

To be fair, there has been legitimate discussion as well. It's just unfortunate that most of the time it's hit-and-run posters who do not elaborate on their disagreements.

The most thing im interested about
New York is I have been there so often and know its more recent history I just can't imagine it not being the coolest city in the world.
they show a drawing in history books or a shot here and there in movies but to actually interact in and around it and seeing it less developed than past cities will be shocking in a good way imo.

Sounds cool but it all comes down to combat improvements.
The 1-guy attacking at a time thing really isn't doing it for me.

Probably won't change until next-gen if at all.

At the very least, two guys will be attacking you at once because there are now double counters...
