IGN’s Top 100 RPGs

you know what? bad as this list is, it reminds me that there were a lot of really amazing compelling games released in the genre and for that we should be thankful.

i for one am looking forward to senility, so I can play them all again for the first time.

It's kinda hard to rank 100 games in order of superiority since much of the likeness of a game can be attributed to personal experiences and preference.

Couple of things: I can't believe jade empire is even on this list at all. Lunar is a fantastic game and totally deserves to be there. Paper Mario TTYD is a much superior game to Mario RPG. I hope ff XII is not on this list. It was my least favorite final fantasy.

Yea

KOTOR
Mass Effect 1
Dragon Age Origins
Fallout 3
Skyrim
FFVI
FFVII
Vesperia
Pokemon Red/Blue
Pokemon Gold/Silver
WOW
Guild Wars 2
Dark Souls
Mass Effect 3
Baldur's Gate 2
Planetscape Torment
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy Tactics

These are all pretty much locks.

Bioware owns your souls.
I would bet on Diablo II instead of two more Pokemon games.

some things are subjective, like quality of storyline. no arguments there.

But there are SEVERAL games on this list that suffered from bad game design, bugs, janky combat, or just plain did not age well. These in many cases are juxtaposed with literally flawless games and innovators in the genre.

It's like ranking a ford pinto and a porche 911 as "roughly equivalent" because hey, it's all opinion, man.

yeah, III showing up at ALL, low as it is guarantees Diablo II will be there.

Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Skyrim, Dragon age, another Mass Effect, Pokemon, WOW, KOTOR, Dark Souls, Diablo II, and Fallout 3 are guaranteed for this list- mostly because of the placement of sequels/prequels already on the list.

I think the only fair way to make a definitive "Top Whatever" list is to make it in alphabetical order, any one game is just as another. if you don't think that's the case (number 100 couldn't be number 1 to somebody), make a smaller list.

Of course that won't get you hits and a 25 page neogaf thread.

Well, hopefully no one's giving them hits and is just reading it here.

That said, it isn't a bad list, but still; no substitute for actual, you know, news content. (RIP Andriasang)

Yeah, pretty much. A few questionable inclusions aside, the IGN list isn't THAT bad if you just pretend that they're not ranking the individual games.

100% locked for the top 20:

- Final Fantasy VI
- Chrono Trigger
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy Tactics
- Baldur's Gate 2
- KOTOR
- Skyrim
- Fallout 3
- WoW
- Diablo 2
- Another Mass Effect

Probably in the Top 20:

- Secret of Mana
- Dragon Age Origins
- Planescape Torment
- Final Fantasy IV
- Final Fantasy XII
- Earthbound

Could be in the Top 20 (Major oversights if they don't make the list at all)

- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- System Shock 2
- Grandia

That would be 19 games.

- I don't think Dark Souls is guaranteed to make it. IGN gave it a 9, but they gave Demons Souls a 9.4, and may just choose to have that represent both games.
- Ditto for Pokemon. Pokemon games are pretty conservative, so I doubt they are going to give 3 of the top 30 spots to games that just recycle the same story and game mechanics every generation.
- Guild Wars 2 is a few weeks old, so I really doubt that will show up on the list. You can't declare an MMO one of the best games ever based on a few weeks of play, and IGN hasn't even assigned it an official review yet.
- I thought that Tales of Vesperia would make the list based on the other Tales titles, but I doubt it would be ranked in the top 20. Not sure why someone would pick Destiny over Vesperia though. I am also surprised that they would include 3 Tales games and not one of the Star Ocean titles.

Top 10 predictions:

10.Fallout 3
9.Oblivion
8.Mass Effect 1
7.Pokemon
6.Planetscape 2
5.KOTOR
4.FFVII
3.Skyrim
2.Chrono Trigger
1.Mass Effect 2

10 - World of Warcraft
9 - Fable 3
8 - Modern Warfare
7 - Dragon age
6 - Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim
5 - Modern warfare 2
4 - Black ops
3 - Dragon age 2
2 - Mass Effect 3
1 - Modern Warfare 3
0 - Black Ops 2 (Will be #1 when it launches)

I think my list is better and more accurate.

Here's how I see any further inclusion of Mass Effect on this list:

Mass Effect 1 in top 20? Okay, cool.

Mass Effect 3 in top 20? RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGEEEEE

- I don't think Dark Souls is guaranteed to make it. IGN gave it a 9, but they gave Demons Souls a 9.4, and may just choose to have that represent both games.

probably correct here. The two are so close in quality and mechanics that ranking them any significant placement apart is just lunacy. but again we did see this with Persona 3 and 4...

- Ditto for Pokemon. Pokemon games are pretty conservative, so I doubt they are going to give 3 of the top 30 spots to games that just recycle the same story and game mechanics every generation.

See above. I'd agree here as well, but pokemon is one of the few series (DQ and FF being the others) that have a legitimate claim to being a phenomenon that expanded the genre. just one entry (and black/white at that) just doesn't seem quite right when there's absolute trash cluttering up the list for no good reason. If someone saw fit to include both Persona 3 and 4, Dragon Quest 1 and 2 and 5, kingdom hearts 1 and 2, two phantasy stars *and* Ogre Battle MOTBQ *and* LUCT...I can see more than one Pokemon.

- Guild Wars 2 is a few weeks old, so I really doubt that will show up on the list. You can't declare an MMO one of the best games ever based on a few weeks of play, and IGN hasn't even assigned it an official review yet.

totally agree.

edit: oh shit. no zelda yet

I haven't played morrowind but I really liked oblivion and skyrim

Morrowind was an alright game. I can't stand how slow everything is and the awful dice roll combat. The real time combat of the newer games, while not perfect, still blows away Morrowind's *stand next to enemy and mash 1 button and hope the coin flips are in my favor combat formula.

Valkyrie Profile should also be on that list somewhere.

Probably cut in favour of including Bioware's entire publishing history. Valkyrie Profile is another game that I would have figured would make the list when they revealed #81-100, but now that we are down to 20 spot I don't see it happening.

Based on the inclusion of Dragon Quest 1 and Final Fantasy 1, I could definitely see them including Red/Blue. However, there's no way that both that and Gold/Silver make the top 20. If Black/White isn't representing the entire series, we will get one of the two Gameboy entries to cover the earlier roots of the franchise.

Few people consider Zelda an rpg series. When I run my rpg lists, I'll get 2-3 people voting for OOT or one of the other titles, but that's about it. I think more people voted for Borderlands in the last thread.

i don't either, but zelda has been showing up on "best of" RPG lists for so long its pointless to contest it at this point.

That, and considering that they've included both kingdom hearts 1 and 2, as well as Odin Sphere (?!) means that all bets are off in terms of what's an RPG and what isn't.

Actually I rarely see Zelda on Top Rpg lists unless it is a fan list on someone's blog. I think they pretty much accepted to be adventure games. If you are going to include Zelda, you might as well throw in Shadow of the Colossus or Super Metroid.

Kingdom Hearts and Odin Sphere at least have stats and levels, multiple PCs, and other things that are usually associated with action rpgs.

I thought they'll rank Deus Ex 1 higher. I even thought it will be number 1. Anyway, I think I will give IGN a chance and wait for their #1 game and play that game this weekend to see for myself.

Also, still no FFXII and Jeanne d'Arc. We're in the top 20 now and maybe I can still hope for FFXII making it but not anymore for Jeanne d'Arc.

Is Wild Arms 1 really that good? (#51, over Skies of Arcadia, Demon Souls, etc.)

No. Wild Arms' claim to fame was being the first (or at least the first I remember) rpg out in the west with 3D polygon based battles back when simply having 3D graphics in your game was a selling point. Unfortunately those 3D models look extremely rough now. Wild Arms had a good soundtrack and a decent plot, but it isn't better than the two games you mentioned. Suikoden 1 was released earlier, and was probably be best rpg on the system before Final Fantasy VII opened the floodgates.

This list is silly -- though it's hard to imagine any such list aligning closely with any particular gamer's tastes. But I at least give them some credit for remembering Ultima IV and putting it in the top 30.

:/ The gap between Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is ridiculously large.

Correction, fuck SMRPG

Super Mario RPG is one of those games that rides high on the Nostalgia wave. I'd rank most of the Mario RPGs (Paper Mario 1 + 2, Mario and Luigi 1 + 3) above Super Mario RPG, but people love that game.

I agree on just doing the 100 alpha, that'd be better. However, hard to argue with the effectiveness of this list for drumming up interest in IGN.

I may not agree with the order but they did include Ultima IV, VII, Underworld, and Online in the list. All four ground-breaking in the genre.

I'd probably swap VII out for VI on the basis that it started the whole "open world with tons to do" push that culminated in VII and it has a much better story.

While it is tempting to swap Ultima IV out for V as V is a much better game there is no denying IV's importance to the series (establishing Britannia as the home of the series for many subsequent installments as well as the Avatar mythos) and to the genre (not being about killing a Foozle).

Ultima Underworld and Online, no question, belong on the basis of pushing the genre forward.

Only other one I'd have liked to see is Ultima III due to its influence on the first JRPGs that followed (Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior). Overland travel with a single icon representing the party, separate battle screen involving multi-character turn-based combat, etc.

But, hey, beggars can't be choosers. This really wasn't the top 100 most important RPGs but they did include many games that would qualify (the aforementioned Ultima titles, Pool of Radiance, Bard's Tale). Wizard's Crown would belong on that list, but I don't think we'll see it show up on this one (and, besides, it wouldn't belong in the top 20). They also managed to squeeze in a Might and Magic and a Wizardry which is nice.

LOL at the idea of Jade Empire even ranking. Who the fuck played Jade Empire. I heard it was easy to exploit the shit out of that game.

Actual dates are hard to come by on some of them these days, but if I remember correctly, in the US, as far as RPGs on the PS1 go, it went...

King's Field
Beyond the Beyond
Suikoden
Persona
Wild Arms
Final Fantasy 7

There wasn't a huge gap between the release dates for WA & FF7 and for as much grief as people give FF7, there's no denying that the 3D models in combat there are drastically better than Wild Arms' models. Excluding FF7 (which everyone's talked about extensively) and Beyond the Beyond (which gets a bad rap for being awful when it's merely mediocre), most of these games are more noteworthy for their sequels rather than these specific games. Of the lot, Suikoden is the best one. Although I have a lot of nostalgia for Wild Arms, it doesn't belong in a top 100 best RPGs of all time list.

Phantasy Star Online? C'mon. I loved that game as a kid, but give me a break.

It was only good because it was the only type of game like that available for consoles, it's pretty mediocre taken objectively.

Not gonna lie, I'd put PSO in the top 5

There is no way any sane person who played Fallout: New Vegas, and actually paid attention what was going on, would put Oblivion not only higher on the list, but that much higher. But I´ll guess that this list is more focused on generating hits on the site then any ambition to make a serious list, so mission accomplished for them. :) It´s by far the worst game related list I´ve seen, but they got my attention.
